Michael Moore has long been the biggest advocate for his home city of Flint, Michigan. When General Motors CEO Roger Smith closed numerous auto plants in the 1980s and sent the community into a economic depression, Moore picked up his camera to document the consequences and make his debut film, "Roger and Me." Recently, the Flint, Michigan water crisis has sent the city into national headlines, and just last month Moore wrote a powerful op-ed for Time lashing out at the government negligence to poisoning Flint's people. With 'Where to Invade Next,' He Changes His Tune In the midst of the water crisis, Moore is giving back to the community once more by screening his latest film, "Where to Invade Next," for free. At Moore's behest, the film's new, still-unnamed distributor, founded by exiting TWC-Radius partners Tom Quinn and Jason Janego and thriving Alamo Drafthouse exhibitor and arthouse distributor Tim League, pushed the film's wider release to the heart of the presidential primary season. (Though shortlisted, the film did not make the final Oscar five after qualifying engagements in New York and L.A. in December.) Now, the filmmaker's hugely entertaining agitprop doc "Where to Invade Next," his first in five years, will be preceded by a 50-state bus tour, with Moore in the role of campaigning politician—in this case, by echoing the film's cheeky, provocative case for the U.S. to adopt various European social programs. Read More: "Oscar Documentary Shortlist of 15 Revealed" "We hope to remind Americans they have the inalienable right to laugh, especially in an election year," the distributors said upon picking up the film, shortly before it.

Twenty-six years ago -- (Michael Moore reminded me how long ago it was) -- I was an acquisitions consultant for Warner Bros. and discovered a new documentary at the Independent Feature Film Market. I ran to the payphone (yes, pre-cell phone days) downstairs at the Anjelica Film Center and called my boss to tell her she must see it. The film was "Roger & Me." Warner Bros. picked up the film.
Since then, Moore continued making provocative and impassioned films, including the Academy Award-winning "Bowling for Columbine," "Sicko," "Fahrenheit 9/11," and "Capitalism: A Love Story." Moore’s latest film, "Where to Invade Next" explores the current state of the nation.
Moore: “My film is about us. I just decided to tell a story about America without shooting a single frame of the movie in the United States.”
Former Radius Founders and Co-Presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego are teaming with Alamo Drafthouse Founder and CEO Tim League to form the yet-to-be-named distribution label and will distribute "Where to Invade Next."
Here are highlights from the New York Film Festival press screening.
The idea for the film
“I was 19 and I just dropped out of college. I got the Eurail pass and youth hostel card and spent a couple of months going around Europe. I was in Sweden and broke a toe, and I was sent to a clinic. I went to pay the bill and there was no bill. I never heard of such a thing. And all through Europe I kept running into things like that. And I thought why can’t we do that? The idea grew organically as most of the things do in my films.”
Planning ahead
“Don’t give me too much credit for thinking this out a whole lot in advance. We don’t think it would be really cool to sit down at the lunch table with a can of Coke and see what the kids do.
The best stuff is what I don’t plan out. What my field producers do in terms of research -- I have them tell me only the basics, I don’t want to know any of the research. When the Italian couple (in the film) tells me about the 15 days paid vacation, this is the first time I’ve heard it, even if the field producers know it. I don’t want to act. We don’t do a second take. If the sound guy says we didn’t get it, you can’t ask them (the subjects) to do it again. We’ve seen too many documentaries like that. It has to happen with them and me in the moment.”
No, Michael Moore is not running for office
“…to say that you have the right to regulate a woman’s uterus but not guns? It’s like, I think the only safe place for guns is in a woman’s uterus. Then they would be regulated by our Republican congress!
I talk politically a lot, but if I really just wanted to make political speeches, I would run for office or give sermons.”
“I went to pick the flowers and not the weeds.”
A line from Moore’s film, which he further details: “Every country has a lot of problems. I didn’t go there to make a film about your countries. There are a lot of things you’re dealing with, but that’s not my film. My film is about us, not about you. I just decided to tell a story about America without shooting a single frame in the United States.”
About Michael Moore’s Happiness
“The difference about this film (compared to his others), some people say it’s not so angry, (that) I’m happier. I’m angrier than ever. Maybe I came up with a more subversive way to deal with that anger with the condition of this country.”
In closing

Exclusive: Radius-twc, the upstart distribution company that The Weinstein Company started with Tom Quinn and Jason Janego at the helm, is in negotiations to acquire U.S. distribution rights to Only God Forgives, the re-team of Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling that is getting underway in Thailand. I’m hearing that the negotiation is in the range of a $2.5 million minimum guarantee. It is the second recent deal that Quinn and Janego made that involved Refn, after Radius acquired a remake of Pusher, the first film that Refn directed. Only God Forgives was a surprise entry in the marketplace. It was all but acquired last summer by Drive distributor FilmDistrict, but the deal never closed. The distributor didn’t see eye to eye with the filmmakers, and it once again became available. CBS Films, which just turned the acquisition The Woman In Black into a hit, was among the other suitors,...

Here they will release the remake of Pusher, the 1996 debut film by Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn. The film’s about a London drug pusher grows increasingly desperate over the course of a week after a botched deal leaves him with a large debt to a ruthless drug lord. New York, NY, February 9, 2012 – The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that its new label, Radius-twc, has acquired from Gaumont the U.S. and Caribbean basin distribution rights to Pusher, an English-language remake of the 1996 cult hit directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) and written by Refn and Jens Dahl. Refn was closely involved in the production of the remake, which is directed by award-winning young filmmaker Luis Prieto (Bamboleho) and written by Matthew Read.

Sundance 2012 buying continued apace today, with four films announcing that they'd found North American homes. Radius-twc, the Weinstein Company's new VOD-plus label, bought "Bachelorette," which screened in competition. Written and directed by Leslye Headland, which she adapted from her own stage play,"Bachelorette" stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson as four frenemies who must come to terms with the first marriage within their quartet -- and the lucky girl is, according to the other three, the least deserving. The deal was negotiated for Radius-twc by Tom Quinn and Jason Janego and by CAA on behalf of the filmmakers. Anchor Bay bought "Excision," which premiered as part of Park City at Midnight. It's the first feature by writer-director Richard Bates Jr. and stars AnnaLynne McCord, Traci Lords, Roger Bart and John Waters. The filmmakers were repped by Preferred Content, Cassian Elwes and...

Update: Well that was fast. I’ve confirmed the Bachelorette deal and the fact Tom Quinn and Jason Janego’s company will be called Radius. Release is below the original scoop. Exclusive: The Sundance distribution deals continue to flow. The Weinstein Company is closing a deal for North American distribution rights to Bachelorette, an edgy comedy written and directed by Leslye Headland. I’m hearing that the deal is in the vicinity of $2 million, and that the plan is for a multi-platform day and date release with a theatrical component. It’s the first significant festival acquisition made by Tom Quinn and Jason Janego since they joined The Weinstein Company to start a new company that takes advantage of the multi-platform release strategy. They’ve named the new company Radius. The film premiered Monday January 23 at the Eccles Theater, and stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, James Marsden, Adam Scott and Kyle Bornheimer.

Distribution panels have it tough: There's always an audience for the information, but the panelists are always loath to give up real numbers. So this year Sundance tried to have it both ways with "Distribution X," a January 21 panel that asked top distributors to spill the numbers on imaginary projects. The panelists were very real: independent producer Karin Chien acted as moderator for veteran sales agent Josh Braun of Submarine; New Video co-president Susan Margolin; Tom Quinn, co-president of TWC's new label RADiUS; distribution strategist Peter Broderick and filmmaker Tiffany Shlain ("Connected"). Pitching the mock movies were producer Alicia Van Couvering ("Tiny Furniture") and filmmaker Senain Kheshgi ("Project Kashmir"). Jay Van Hoy, executive producer of Sundance 2012 selection "Keep the Lights On," also presided, weighing in and doing the math. Chien asked for "real numbers" and that...

Breaking: One day after the close of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, The Weinstein Company has finally closed a film acquisition deal. TWC completed a U.S. rights deal on the Stephen Frears-directed Lay the Favorite, the D.V. DeVincentis-scripted adaptation of the Beth Raymer memoir about a young woman who gets in with some older gamblers who figure out how to manipulate the Vegas sports book system. Bruce Willis, Rebecca Hall, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vince Vaughn, Laura Prepon and Joshua Jackson star. The deal was in the $2.2 million range. Distribution is being worked out for the fall, and the plan is a combination of day and date theatrical release in 50 markets and release on VOD. That gives Tom Quinn and Jason Janego–who were hired last fall to start a multi-platform releasing company for TWC–a solid star-studded project to work with. The deal was brokered by the film’s financier,...

An insider told The Mirror: "It's incredibly exciting to have Matthew back again, even if he's only (more)...

The Wagner/Cuban Co. distributor has acquired North American rights to the martial arts actioner from director Prachya Pinkaew and leading Thai producer Sahamongkolfilm International, the team behind the hit "Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior."
"Chocolate" tells the story of an autistic girl (Jeeja Vismistananda) who learns martial arts to track down thugs that owe her ailing mother money. After its world premiere this month in the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness section, the film played to enthusiastic crowds at Austin's Fantastic Fest last weekend.
The Weinstein Co. originally picked up North American rights to the film, but handed them back to Sahamongkolfilm along with its rights to the "Ong Bak 2" sequel last year. The original film was the third highest grosser in Magnolia's history.

From the looks of it, Tom Quinn is having a pretty remarkable year. He started off by winning the Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance with his positively Cassavetian take on a disintegrating South Philly Irish clan, The New Year’s Parade. This week, he became one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces in Independent Film. Although the director, writer, producer, DP, gaffer, editor, financier of this micro budget film doesn’t feel like an indiewood cop-out waiting to happen, we will certainly be seeing more from him soon. While we wait for Tom’s indie darling status to cement, I chatted with him for our Media Diet intervi ...

Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has prebought North American rights to Toby Wilkins' horror-thriller Splinter, which is nearing completion.
Splinter revolves around a young couple held hostage by an ex-convict, all of whom are menaced by a parasitic monster.
The film, which Magnet plans to release next year, marks the feature directorial debut of Wilkins, a longtime VFX artist who has worked on films by Brett Ratner, James Cameron, Bryan Singer and Jonathan Demme. He also was recently tapped to direct the third installment of the The Grudge franchise for Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures. He worked for Raimi as director of the short film series Tales of the Grudge, which preceded the release of The Grudge 2.
The deal was negotiated by Magnolia's Tom Quinn and Jason Janego, along with Micah Green and Brian Kavanaugh Jones of CAA and Jamie Carmichael of ContentFilm.

In Kiltro, Zaror plays a violent gangster out to avenge the killing of his mother. The film was a hit in writer/director Espinoza's native Chile. Mirageman showcases the acrobatic actor as a masked vigilante.
Kiltro has its stateside premiere this week at Austin's Fantastic Film Festival. Both features are slated for release in 2008.
Better known abroad than in the U.S., Zaror won the 2004 Stuntman of the Year award for his work as The Rock's stunt double in The Rundown. "At 6'2'', 210 pounds, it's magic to watch him move with such speed, power and style," said producer Derek Rundell.
