As we await the long-gestating “Community” movie, co-stars Joel McHale and Ken Jeong are back together again on Wednesday’s new episode of McHale’s Fox comedy “Animal Control.” It also marks the return of “Kensday,” as “Animal Control” airs right after “The Masked Singer,” in which Jeong is a panelist (and McHale has been a frequent guest over the seasons).
Variety has a first look at the duo in action from tonight’s episode, as Ken Jeong guest stars as Roman Park, “a reputable (and unhinged) dog trainer.” In the story, Emily (played by Vella Lovell) hires Park to help with the kennel dogs at the precinct, but he disrupts the office dynamics and competes with McHale’s character, Frank, for the role of “Alpha.”

Exclusive: Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!), Chelsea Frei (The Moodys), and Larry Joe Campbell (The Orville) have been set for guest star roles in the forthcoming second season of Fox’s popular workplace comedy Animal Control, starring Joel McHale.
Others set to appear in S2 guest roles, as previously announced, include Ken Jeong, Sarah Chalke, and Krystal Smith.
Premiering last February, the show created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not. McHale plays Frank, an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals.

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment has given an early Season 3 pickup to its workplace comedy Animal Control a month before the single-camera series starring Joel McHale is set to premiere its second season on March 6, paired with Family Guy.
Animal Control is Fox’s first fully owned live-action comedy — and only current live-action series — which is giving the company flexibility on renewal decisions. The comedy, which scored a record streaming debut for Fox, has lined up international sales in key English-language territories, including UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, bringing revenue for the company. (The network’s roster of fully owned scripted series also includes animated comedy Krapopolis.)
After seeing Season 2’s creative direction, including finished episodes, the Fox brass felt confident about ordering another season, which will be shot after a break following Season 2 wrap to accommodate talent schedules.

In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. Exclusive: Joel McHale got up close and personal with a baby cougar for Fox‘s Super Bowl ad promoting the network’s new comedy series Animal Control.
The spot, which will air during Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs, pokes fun at the cost of an ad for the big game as McHale quips: “Wanna hear something crazy? This ad cost 3 million, and only half of that went toward my hair.”
He adds: “And everything you’ve heard is true. Attractive cougars in your area want to meet you.”
His co-star (the baby cougar) sits peacefully in his arms as he tells viewers to tune in Thursdays at 9 p.m. for the show. In an outtake, McHale jokes that Fox only gave the show 15 seconds for their ad, which, coincidentally, is “the maximum amount of time you can hold a cougar before it decides to maul you.

He adds: “And everything you’ve heard is true. Attractive cougars in your area want to meet you.”
His co-star (the baby cougar) sits peacefully in his arms as he tells viewers to tune in Thursdays at 9 p.m. for the show. Fox has rounded out the cast for Animal Control. Michael Rowland, Grace Palmer, Gerry Dee, Kelli Ogmundson and Alvina August join Joel McHale, Vella Lovell and Ravi Patel in the upcoming straight-to-series workplace comedy.
Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Dan Sterling, the comedy series follows a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not.

“The Moodys” has been canceled at Fox after two seasons, Variety has learned.
The series originally debuted in December 2019. The second season debuted on April 1, but Fox pulled it from the schedule with three episodes left around two weeks later. The final episode of the season is currently slated to air this Sunday, June 20. It will now serve as the series finale. The first season consisted of six episodes, while the second season bumped it up to eight.
“The Moodys” got off to a decent start at Fox in its first season, which was centered on Christmas and played up as a holiday event series at the network. Its rating fell off hard going into the second season, essentially halving what the show averaged in the first.

Fox is saying goodbye to The Moodys.
The network will not be bringing the family comedy series, which stars Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, back for a third season.
It’s not a huge surprise after the network quietly pulled it from the schedule after its fifth episode of the second season. The last episode is expected to air on June 20.
The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season in 2019. Fox brought it back for a second season as an ongoing family comedy, but the half-hour starring Denis Leary has struggled to get traction, ranking among the lowest rated Fox series.
Written by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill, The Moodys follows the tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, Moody family through their misadventures.

Fox’s Denis Leary comedy “The Moodys” was initially designed as a holiday series, but when the show returns for Season 2 next month, don’t expect a Christmas tree.
“We wanted to be able to do episodes throughout the year, and we didn’t want to have to be creatively tied to Christmas every time,” co-showrunner Bob Fisher said at a Television Critics Association panel for Season 2 on Wednesday. “We’re not saying we’ll never do the holidays, but we wanted to be able to just do different kinds of stories throughout the year.”
The family comedy premiered in 2019 as a six-episode “event series” as part of Fox’s holiday slate. The series was an adaptation of the Australian series of the same name, which followed the Moody family across a series of Christmases before expanding to other holidays and important family events.

Lords of Dogtown is headed to television. IMDb TV, Amazon’s free, ad-supported streaming service, is developing a TV series adaptation of the 2005 Sony movie. The project hails from Shawn Ryan’s MiddKid Productions and Sony Pictures TV where the company is based, with the movie’s director Catherine Hardwick executive producing.
Written by Kat Candler (Queen Sugar), Lords of Dogtown is a one-hour ensemble-drama about the 1970s skateboarding scene in Southern California, centered around a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team.
Candler is executive producing alongside Hardwick and MiddKid’s Ryan and Marney Hochman.
Directed by Hardwicke and written by Stacy Peralta, the Lords of Dogtown movie follows the surf and skateboarding trends that originated in Venice, California during the 1970s. The film starred Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk, John Robinson,...

I hear Ryan wrote the pilot script on spec at Sony Pictures TV where he is under an exclusive overall deal. The project is believed to be still in internal development and will be taken out in the new year. Ryan is executive producing via his MiddKid Productions, with the company’s Marney Hochman also expected to exec produce.

Fox has renewed the critically acclaimed comedy series The Moodys for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, Fox Entertainment. Starring and executive-produced by Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominees Denis Leary (“Rescue Me”) and Elizabeth Perkins (“Sharp Objects”), The Moodys follows a tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, family through their misadventures. “With The Moodys, we set out to brand the holidays in the only way Fox can – bold and unconventional. What we ended up with was a special show – and a family – everyone at the network fell in love with,” said Thorn. “Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, and Tad Quill perfectly captured the hysterics of Christmas, with sharp banter and real moments of family togetherness brought to life by Denis Leary, Elizabeth Perkins and the rest of the incredible cast. Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and CBS Television Studios have been great partners on this series; and,...

As networks continue making changes to their upcoming lineups, they're dropping good and bad news.
This afternoon, premium network HBO was hard at work, as was broadcast network Fox.
On HBO's plate was a decision about the critically acclaimed comedy, Run. And on Fox's plate was the consideration about the holiday-themed limited series, The Moodys.
Only one of them scored a renewal.
If we look at it from the persepctive of the audience and the critics using Rotten Tomatoes as our guide, there is an interesting tale to tell.
Run garnered an 80% approval rating from critics, but they got a paltry 47% audience appreciation score. Ouch.
On the other hand, The Moodys didn't do so well with critics with a 62% consensus. Viewers were much more taken with the Fox series, though, earning an 83% approval score.
So what does it mean? Probably nothing to the networks involved. But it might have translated into viewers.

The Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins comedy “The Moodys” is getting a second season at Fox.
The series, which follows a tight-knit but dysfunctional family, is an adaptation of Australian series “A Moody Christmas” from The Jungleboys Entertainment and Australian Broadcasting Corporation. CBS Television Studios is the studio behind the show.
“The Moodys” debuted as a six-episode holiday event series. Fox’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn had indicated last summer that if the series proved successful, the network might bring it back for another Christmas run.
“With ‘The Moodys,’ we set out to brand the holidays in the only way Fox can – bold and unconventional. What we ended up with was a special show – and a family – everyone at the network fell in love with,” said Thorn. “Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg and Tad Quill perfectly captured the hysterics of Christmas, with sharp banter and real moments of family togetherness...

“The Moodys,” starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins, has been renewed for a second season by Fox, the broadcast network announced Friday.
The six-episode debut season of the comedy series, which follows “a tight-knit, but slightly dysfunctional, family through their misadventures,” aired last December and focused on the Moodys at Christmastime.
The second season is slated to premiere during the upcoming 2020-2021 season and will continue to focus on the family, but take their story beyond the holiday season, a Fox spokesperson tells TheWrap.

The Moody family will be back. Fox has picked up a second season of comedy The Moodys, starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Perkins.
The show, based on Australian series A Moody Christmas, started as a holiday event comedy series with the first installment airing during the holiday season last year.
The second season, targeted for the 2020-21 season will not be holiday-themed, with a bigger order size than the six-episode original limited run. I hear it will be between 6 and 13 half-hours. It may be paired with Fox’s only returning live-action comedy series, Last Man Standing, which shares a similar blue-collar sensibility.
