Last year, Bad Bunny's "Un Verano Sin Ti" became the first non-English language album to top the Billboard 200. The Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaetonero also became the most streamed artist on Spotify for the third consecutive year. Latin music revenue exceeded $1 billion for the first time last year, allowing reggaetón, música Mexicana, and other Latin music genres to reach global success. By any and all metrics, Latin music has officially taken over. But the origins of these genres remain up for debate, particularly when it comes to urbano music and its connections to American hip-hop.
"De La Calle," a new docuseries on Paramount+, explores that and more. For over a decade, award-winning journalist Nick Barili - who was born in Argentina but grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area - has wanted to create a documentary that tells a broader story of Latin music, its rich diversity, its connection to American rap music,...

Jharrel Jerome isn't hiding behind self-doubt anymore. It might be hard to believe the 26-year-old - the youngest to ever win an Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited series or movie - is anything less than confident, given the praise he's earned for his buzzy onscreen performances, which include the Oscar-winning "Moonlight" and critically acclaimed "When They See Us" miniseries. But the Bronx native has been admittedly hesitant to introduce his other talent: rapping. But now, he tells Popsugar, "I'm ready to move with confidence."
"I think it was definitely me telling myself as loud as I can that I really do enjoy this and that I want this at a young, young age."
Up until 2020, Jerome largely kept his rap ambitions under wraps, though he's been quietly sharing music on SoundCloud since 2016. The "I'm a Virgo" star built his Hollywood reputation with compelling TV and movie roles,...

We can't talk about the greatest rappers to come out of the golden age of hip-hop without mentioning Fat Joe. The Puerto Rican and Cuban rapper from the Bronx, NY, has undoubtedly had a major impact on the culture and its movement, putting out 13 studio albums and numerous hit singles like "Flow Joe," "What's Luv?," "Lean Back," and many more. The Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist also started his own record label Terror Squad Production, where he earned a reputation for cultivating raw talents like legendary Puerto Rican emcee Big Pun, who died on Feb. 7, 2000, at age 28.
While 30 years have gone by since Fat Joe dropped his debut first album, "Represent," in 1993, the Boricua artist still remains relevant as one of hip-hop's GOATs. "I want them to know I'm one of the greats and that I've always been an ambassador for hip-hop and put that first," Fat Joe tells Popsugar of his cultural impact.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and music go together like the Ninja Turtles and pizza; the two are intrinsically linked. From the iconic theme song of the 1987 animated series, to Vanilla Ice’s tie-in “Ninja Rap” for 1991’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, and even their semi-forgotten 1990 stage rock and roll musical Coming Out of Their Shells, no matter the genre, these green teens are always rocking big tunes.
With music playing such a big role in the Turtles’ history, director Jeff Rowe and executive producer Seth Rogen had to be extra thoughtful when selecting the songs for the soundtrack of the Turtles’ latest film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. With its distinctive animation style, the feature film finds our pizza-loving Turtles escaping their sheltered existence in the sewers as they seek to be accepted as normal teenagers through acts of heroism.

"The landscape is beautiful," Justin Irvin Rivera tells Popsugar. The Puerto Rican rapper and native New Yorker better known as J.I. is referencing the Rocky Mountains just outside the window of his Colorado hotel. Rivera, 21, has racked up millions of streams over the past seven years. Yet even as a rising rap star, the contrast between his newfound circumstances and his life growing up in Brooklyn isn't lost on him.

Rather than mountains, Rivera grew up surrounded in a panorama of Crown Heights apartment buildings and city stoops, running around the maze of streets from sunup to sundown and sharpening his lyrical skills at the local ciphers. Even at a young age,...

It’s been a little over two years since A Boogie wit Da Hoodie released his third official album, Artist 2.0. In an interview with Apple Music, he said that caring for his mother, who had cancer, as well as mourning the death of PnB Rock in September contributed to his relative absence prior to Me vs. Myself. (On the deluxe edition, he honors PnB Rock with “Needed That.”) But it feels like mainstream rap has shifted in the interim.

Eminem’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction is a complicated honor given the institution’s history of overlooking hip-hop’s most influential and pioneering Black artists, but Saturday night’s induction ceremony was a celebration of his contributions to the genre nonetheless.
The rapper himself acknowledged that fact in his induction speech, quipping that there were probably a few reasons why he wasn’t supposed to be there Saturday night. “I know that I’m a rapper, and this is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and there...

, “In the Heights” is the kind of electrifying theatrical experience that people have been waxing nostalgic about ever since the pandemic began — the kind that it almost seemed like we might never get to enjoy again. In that sense, Jon M. Chu’s super-glossy Broadway adaptation hits with equal parts rapture and relief. Seeing this massive, guileless, heartfelt piece of Hollywood entertainment on the big screen is like coming home after a long year in exile only to find that it’s still there, and maybe even better than you remembered.
This is the story of a New York City block that’s on the brink of disappearing, and it naturally carries an extra charge now that its medium is as delicate as its message. Then again, the threat of commercialized self-erasure has been cooked into Miranda’s anti-gentrification lament since he wrote the first drafts of it as an undergrad at Wesleyan.

Khalid Robinson’s 2017 debut LP, American Teen, was a coming-of-age record that made young-dumb brokeness feel like the only way to go. At 19, Khalid had appeared on tracks by Kendrick Lamar and Future, and he was tight with Kylie Jenner. Yet he perfectly inhabited the world of an average high school kid as he tried to make sense of his messy emotions over Eighties-loving R&B tracks. The results reduced Drake-size ambition to the relatable scale of a dude who sang about living with his folks.

Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next album is all but guaranteed to debut at Number One. When it does, it will be another in a long string of commercial slam-dunks for Grande.
More surprising, the album’s success also represents a return to the charts for ‘NSync and Wendy Rene. That’s because “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” interpolates a verse from ‘NSync’s jittery “It Makes Me Ill,” while “Fake Smile” borrows from Rene’s “After Laughter (Comes Tears),” a Sixties soul record that has been...

For hip-hop fans, the significance of 1998 needs little explanation thanks to landmark works by Lauryn Hill, Outkast, Jay-z, Dmx, Big Pun, the Neptunes, the Cash Money and No Limit collectives, and more. But despite a geyser of creativity and a new era of gold-plated entrepreneurship, the year still had more to offer.
Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey) and Talib Kweli’s album as Black Star — released 20 years ago as of September 29th — was a loquacious signpost for an emerging underground that prized skills and respected independent distribution channels.

When Nicki Minaj released Queen on Friday, the album included a predictable cast of A-list guest vocalists — acts like Future, the Weeknd, Ariana Grande and Lil Wayne. But one singer on Queen is less well-known to American listeners: Labrinth, who co-wrote, co-produced and sang on “Majesty,” a schizophrenic, hard-hitting record with an astoundingly fast verse from Eminem.
Labrinth is a singer-songwriter-producer with a long resume that includes previous placements with Rihanna (“Lost in Paradise” from Unapologetic), the Weeknd (“Stargirl Interlude” from Starboy) and Ed Sheeran (“Save Myself” from ÷). In the U.

Nineteen years later, fans of ’90s hip-hop will recognize an homage to those Pun bars in writer-director Geremy Jasper’s coming-of-age hip-hop comedy “Patti Cake$,” starring Danielle Macdonald as an aspiring rapper name Killa P/Patti. Marvel is doing a pretty good job at showing us just how brazen Jon Bernthal's Punisher is going to be in the second season for Daredevil. In 2007, Jeremy McCarter, at the time a theater critic for New York, wrote a glowing review of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Off Broadway production In the Heights, praising it as “a musical that owes more to Big Pun than to Bernstein." The following year, having moved on to Broadway, the show was nominated for 13 Tony awards, winning four, including Best Musical. Despite that dizzying success, Miranda remembered McCarter’s early review, and the two eventually met to talk about their shared interest in theater and hip-hop. But Miranda also had an idea: “He mentioned to me in our very first conversation that he was interested in doing something about Alexander Hamilton, which at first I thought was a really funny joke,” says McCarter. “Turns out it wasn’t a joke.” McCarter later left the magazine business to run Public Forum, a performance and conversation series at the Public Theater centered on politics,...

Much like a grown-up Cady Heron from Mean Girls, Amy Adams is thirsty to be a part of the "in crowd." And in a world where people think Taylor Swift invented the word squad over a decade after Fat Joe and Big Pun were in Terror Squad (and even they didn't invent it), Adams shared with THR that the "in crowd," to her, means Amy Schumer and Jennifer Lawrence. You know, if a celebrity were to publicly announce that they wanted to be friends with another celebrity, you'd think they would pick someone more famous than them. Like Rihanna. Or Beyoncé. Or even Taylor Swift! Not an actress whom they were actually already in American Hustle with, because it's kind of weird that they don't already have her number and can't just text J.Law and ask her what's good. Amy goes on to say:“I’m waiting for Jennifer Lawrence...

Dwayne Johnson has had a very musical weekend. Saturday he shared his “The Rock's Ultimate Ball-Out Playlist” via Apple Music. Playlist foul. Later in the day, after pumping iron in the gym, Johnson had some #PostWorkoutBliss (hashtag his) surging in his extremely buff body, so he put on Trendsetter Sense's “What You Know” (which is not on his Ball-Out Playlist) and broke into dance. We already knew Johnson could dance pretty well: He showed off his moves for Ellen in 2010, then did a pec dance for Ellen a year later, and shook it off on Lip Sync Battle this April. Rashida Jones wanted to tell a certain story, play a specific character, and truly challenge herself. So she did what most actors can't: She wrote her own movie.
Along with close friend/ fellow actor Will McCormack, Jones penned a story based on their own relationship: The two dated briefly before deciding they were better off as friends, and then became as close as could be. The result is "Celeste and Jesse Forever," a funny, heartfelt film about a divorced couple intent on remaining BFFs, with Jones co-starring alongside Andy Samberg in the title roles.

Ask Rick Ross about Heavy D's contribution to hip-hop, and he's likely to break out into song.
"Heav's at the door, so there'll be no bum-rushing," Rozay sang when MTV News asked about his thoughts on the passing of the Overweight Lover. Heavy's verse from the 1989 anti-violence jam "Self Destruction" was clearly memorable for the Maybach Music boss, but it goes deeper than just his rhymes, according to Ross.
"Man, you know, that was the Overweight Lover, and it was just cool to see a big dude that could still dance, get fly, put on the slick joints, rock the dope shades, the females screaming for him," Rozay said on Wednesday's "RapFix Live.

Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam breaks down the tracks on Watch the Throne with MTV News

Since Kanye West first announced Watch the Throne on Twitter in August 2010, the tag-team LP with Jay-z had been shrouded in mystery. In the months leading up to the album's August 8, 2011 release, details remained sketchy. There was no loaded press run, super radio push, music video or album leaks leading up to the drop. In fact, "H.A.M" and "Otis" were the only songs released to the general public; beyond that there was nothing.
A few were in the know, like Def Jam VP of A&R Bu Thiam who, was there throughout the recording process and helped Hov and Yeezy achieve their sonic goal. "As an A&R it's a process of trying to bring out the artist's creative ideas and their visions,...

Nas proclaimed hip-hop was dead with the title of his 2006 album, but celebrity photographer Danny Hastings recalls that it was God's Son who almost met his demise in 1999 during their photo shoot for Nas' third LP, I Am.
The concept of the album art was to take the cover theme from Nas' debut, Illmatic, and build on it. The 1994 LP featured a picture of a young Nasir Jones, with the Queensbridge projects as the backdrop. On the Mc's 1996 follow-up, It Was Written, Nas appeared in front of the same backdrop, just a bit older. For his third album, Hastings wanted to continue to document the rapper's growth.

When bad meets evil, there's sure to be a catastrophe, at least that's what photographer/filmmaker Danny Hastings envisioned when he was tapped to shoot the album cover for Eminem and Royce Da 5'9"'s new collabo Ep, Hell: The Sequel.
"I interpreted hell not being a satanic place, I interpreted hell as, 'Ok, this is what I've been through — you're coming in next.' In the sense like, 'Prepare for the sequel,' " said Hastings, who famously shot the cover for Wu-Tang Clan's debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), as well as albums for Big Pun, Gang Starr and Nas.
Hastings also lent his lens to the inside art for Em's 1998 debut, The Slim Shady LP.

"Def Jam Rapstar" is a big release for hip-hop fans, a long-ignored group when it comes to video games. Anyone who purchases "Def Jam Rapstar" at a Best Buy between October 12 and October 19 will also receive a free copy of Lil Wayne's ninth album, entitled "I Am Not A Human Being."
Despite Lil Wayne's current incarceration, "I Am Not A Human Being" will be his second album released in less than a year, and fans of hip-hop will undoubtedly appreciate the two-for-one deal they're getting with the game and the album.
In addition to the album, followers of Lil Wayne can attempt his lyrical style in one of his songs, "A Milli," which is included in the game.

Fat Joe's "RapFix Live" interview on Friday (August 6) was heavy on highlights. However, one of the more surprising moments arose when rocker Travis Barker joined the Terror Squad rapper's sit-down.
Barker — at the MTV News offices for a separate interview — warmly greeted Joe, who recalled fond times with Barker's late pals DJ Am and Lil Chris. While Travis may be best known as the drummer for rock outfits Blink-182 and +44, he's since branched out, becoming a familiar figure in the hip-hop scene. Barker has remixed songs by stars like Soulja Boy and hit the stage with the likes of Jamie Foxx and T-Pain.

In the independent filmmaking world, Albert Pyun is a little more independent than most. Having made his directorial debut with "The Sword and the Sorcerer" in 1982 after serving an apprenticeship under Akira Kurosawa, Pyun carved out a unique niche as a director of low-budget, high-concept genre films starring casts slightly past their prime.
Some will think that's a charitable description for Pyun, who has been derided as "the new Ed Wood," but consider that his pairings of rap stars and action stars (beginning with the 1997 Ice-t/Christopher Lambert team-up "Mean Guns") begat the trend Joel Silver popularized in the early naughts, and he was once just two weeks shy of directing "Spider-Man" (which he'll explain below).
These days, Pyun's movies rarely see the inside of a theater, but that's made him a pioneer in another arena: streaming video-on-demand. With his latest film, "Tales of an Ancient Empire," a spiritual "not...

In a recent interview with GQ, Jack White let it be known that he had just recorded a song with none other than Jay-z and that said song is "unbelievable-sounding."
And while we have no reason to doubt the man's word, we're still a bit wary. After all, the last time White ventured outside his comfort zone was in 2008, when he recorded "Another Way To Die" — the theme song to that year's James Bond vehicle "Quantum of Solace"
— which was one part total brilliance and three parts train wreck (though it's possible that the movie itself was the real culprit).
Also, it's not like the history of rock-n-rap collaborations is all that great anyway. Aside from a few watershed moments — like the Beastie Boys' entire career, Run-d.M.C. teaming up with Aerosmith for "Walk This Way," the soundtrack to 1993's "Judgment Night" (Biohazard and Onyx! Sonic Youth and Cypress Hill!

Tuesday (March 9) is a day not to mourn, but to celebrate the life and legacy of one of music's most gifted artists: the Notorious B.I.G.
His voice, his flow, his rhymes, his swag — whatever you wanted, B.I.G. had it to offer. He could tell stories, battle it out, ignite the party or kick game to the ladies. Christopher Wallace was made for rap.
We didn't get much time with Biggie. He put out his first album in 1994, and he died in early 1997 before the release of his second LP (Life After Death). Due to his work ethic, however, we have a catalog of timeless music that is often imitated, never duplicated. As mesmerizing as a Biggie song was, part of his allure as an artist was his charming personality.
