I’m taken aback by the casting direction that Kenneth Branagh has taken with his film version of Marvel Comics’ Thor — it might just be my unfamiliarity with the subject material, but really? The 40-Year-Old Virgin’s Kat Dennings in a tale of Asgard’s invasion of Earth?
That’s not to say I’m disappointed or unexcited. In fact, Branagh has fleshed out an incredibly interesting cast featuring Star Trek’s Chris Hemsworth as Thor, alongside Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgard and Ray Stevenson.
The latest addition to the cast of Thor is Rene Russo, who will be playing Frigga, the mother of Thor. Russo has been sort of non-existent for the past few years, so it’s good to see her stepping behind one of Marvel’s upcoming centerpiece films.

Veteran actress Rene Russo has signed on to appear in Kenneth Branagh’s greatly anticipated adaptation of “Thor.”
According to Variety, Russo has been cast as Frigga, the wife of Odin — portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the film — and the mother of Thor and Loki, who are played by Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston respectively.
Frigga’s role in the film may differ from her few appearances in the “Thor” comic. In Marvel’s continuity, Frigga is the step-mother of both Thor and Loki — not their actual mother. Thor is the son of Odin and the Earth goddess Gaea while Loki is adopted by Odin after his Frost Giant parents are slain in battle.
It’s worth noting that Variety’s description of the film’s story has changed slightly. In the article, Thor is described a “powerful but arrogant warrior Thor reigniting an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is »

Rene Russo has joined the ever-growing and impressive cast of the upcoming "Thor." As the wife of Norse god Odin, to be played by Anthony Hopkins in the film, Frigga is the queen of Asgard. She's also the mother of Thor and Loki, the pic's primary villain, portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. And, as a reminder: Mark Protosevich and Zack Stentz penned the script, which has the powerful but arrogant warrior Thor reigniting an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth. As I said at the start, this cast is turning out to be quite impressive. I still have a hard time seeing them tying this one in to the other movies, but it »

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) has hinted he may be playing the comic-book character, archer hero Clint Barton, a.k.a. Hawkeye, in Kenneth Branagh’s “Thor“
“Hawkeye could be interesting,” Renner said. “I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun… I’m just happy to get considered for big franchise roles like that.”
He added:
“I’m not exactly sure why he’s shutting down the idea of playing the Cap’n in favor of the much less prestigious Hawkeye, but I’m intrigued. Let’s hear more.
“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers,” he said. “But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

We can all thank Natalie Portman for letting slip this bit of casting news for the upcoming Thor movie. While plugging the American remake of Brothers (hitting theaters Dec. 4), Portman told MTV News she is "really excited" to work with her friend Kat Dennings on Thor. It just feels like cast announcements have been pouring in for the upcoming Marvel adaptation -- Dennings will join Portman (love interest Jane Foster), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Stellan Skarsgård, Colm Feore, Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and just about everyone else under the sun for what is shaping up to be a very interesting stab at the Norse superhero. Kenneth Branagh will be directing from the script by Mark Protosevich (with Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller).
Of course the burning question here is who will Dennings be playing? MTV's Splash Page and /film both mention the possibility of Enchantress, which »

Given his history of cameos, (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Daredevil, etc.) it’s not exactly shocking that Lee will be getting one in Thor. Here’s what the George Washington of Marvel Comics said to MTV about meeting with the film’s director, four-time Academy Award nominee, Kenneth Branagh:
“I had lunch with Branagh, [who's] the nicest guy in the world as well as the most talented… months ago, when he was first starting on the movie, he said he would get a cameo for me.”
There ya have it. In case you’re insane and want to know exactly when Stan Lee will appear in the background of the film selling hot dogs or whatever, he had this to say to those dogged MTV folks when pressed for details:
“I think he has more important things to think of at the moment with the movie — like who he »

The Warrior's Three Are Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano
Directed by Kenneth Branagh off a script by Mark Protosevich and Zack Stentz, Thor already supports a cast that includes Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth, whose Star Trek cameo landed him the title role.
Townsend has been cast to play Fandral, a character which was drawn in the comic book series based on Errol Flynn and his movies. According to Variety, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano will play the Warrior’s Three, a trio of Asgardian adventurers who fight alongside “Thor.”
Fandral the Dashing (Stuart Townsend): is a warrior of Asgard and an adventurer. He is an irrepressible swashbuckler and romantic. His bravery and optimism often puts the group in highly disadvantageous positions; as perennially pointed out by the gloomy Hogun. Fandral considers himself the consummate ladies’ man and is often depicted with a bevy of young ladies. His actual success with these ladies is intermittent at best, but as such provides numerous opportunities for humorous results. Despite these flaws, he possesses an excessively noble spirit and will do the right thing without thought to his personal safety or prosperity.
Hogun the Grim (Tadanobu Asano): The only thing known about his past is that he’s not an Aesir like most of the Asgardians. »
