James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” swept the 21st annual Ves Awards Wednesday night in an unprecedented wave of dominance in every category, winning nine of its record-breaking 14 nominations, including the top photoreal feature, and the newest category, The Emerging Technology Award, for its innovative water toolset.
Although the prestigious visual effects honorary society has not been a reliable Oscar bellwether in recent years — picking the VFX winner only twice in the last six years — this now looks like a lock for the “Avatar” sequel.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (from Netflix) — the favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar — won the top animation trophy and took home three awards; Amazon’s “Thirteen Lives” snagged the supporting prize, and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” grabbed the episodic prize and also took home three awards.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards. The previous record for wins by a film was set by “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at the first Ves Awards in 2003, when it won eight awards. (The show had fewer awards then than it does now.)

Joining “The Way of Water” on the Ves leaderboard are “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” which respectively top the animation and TV fields with six and seven nominations. Warner Bros’ Dune and Disney’s Encanto scored a leading four wins each at the 20th annual Ves Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton.
Denis Villeneuve’s epic starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya won the marquee Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature prize — presented by Villeneuve himself. Dune also took trophies for Model, Effects Simulations and Compositing & Lighting. Even though the film opened day-and-date on HBO Max, it still was able to thrive in theaters with a $41 million opening weekend that exceeded expectations and led to a quick greenlight for a sequel weeks later.
Encanto, from directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard, danced away with the top toon honor — Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature — and also won for Animated Character, Created Environment and Virtual Cinematography.

"When people see me, they..." "Die?" Gravitas Ventures has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie dark comedy called Looks That Kill, which is landing on VOD soon. The film stars Brandon Flynn as a teenage boy dealing with the ups and downs of being lethally attractive. His face kills - literally! Of course, since this is a teenage story, he meets a girl with her own bizarre ailment, who aids him on his self-discovery quest. Julia Goldani Telles co-stars, with Ki Hong Lee, Annie Mumolo, and Tom Proctor. This doesn't look that cheesy, I have to say, there's an earnestness to it that gives it an edge. Though it's still yet another film about beautiful teens. For an apocalyptic survival tale, this older bearded dude raps pretty poetic about pain, of all things. The cast includes Jason Sutton, Joseph Gatt, Tom Proctor and Michael Campion; Cody Fultz, Alex Frasier, and Kraig Swisher produced. Awash in foreboding imagery, the trailer definitely piqued my interest. Here's the official synopsis: "Finding Eden tells the story of an Earth that begins dying when it shifts off its axis - and what happens when survivors must fight to survive in the dire wastelands within the wake of unrivaled disasters....

The film features an ensemble cast including Jason Sutton, Joseph Gatt, Tom Proctor, Kelly Rose, Yindra Zayas, Raul Colon, Kris Kozlowski, and Michael Campion. This is one of those films where the concept is out of the league of the filmmaking. I really wish this was better than it looks,...

Generally when I see the name Bruce Dern, I have a lot of faith in a movie. He is a great actor who I enjoy seeing onscreen. But not even he could save this one. Nation’s Fire looks like a cross between a student film and a Lifetime movie, but made by a man. That man is Thomas J. Churchill, who wrote and directed the film. Nation’s Fire also stars Krista Grotte, Gil Bellows, Paul Sloan, Chuck Liddell, Lou Ferrigno Jr., Kristen Renton, Laurene Landon, Tom Proctor, Kyle Lowder, and Wyatt Walter. Here’s the synopsis:
The leader of an all-female motorcycle club abandons her gang to raise her son. Meanwhile, certain members of their all-male counterpart gang establish an underground drug ring led by a ruthless criminal. When her son is killed in a school shooting caused by the drugs and he is named as the shooter,...

"It takes courage to get back on the bike." Vision Films has released the official trailer for an indie action-thriller titled Nation's Fire, the latest from producer / director Thomas J. Churchill. This looks like one of these "how did this even get made?!" kind of terrible films that no one will even see. The former leader of an all-female motorcycle club loses her son in a drug-fueled school shooting caused by a Russian gangster and his daughter. Now she will rally her old gang and their male counterpart's motorcycle club to seek vengeance for her son's death and to prove her son was not the shooter. Sounds... very American. Starring Krista Grotte, Gil Bellows, Bruce Dern, Paul Sloan, Chuck Liddell, Lou Ferrigno Jr., Kristen Renton, Laurene Landon, Tom Proctor, Kyle Lowder, and Wyatt Walter. I don't know whether to condemn this film, or just laugh at it. Looks so stupid,...

Chicago – The story of Sean Flynn – son of the legendary Errol Flynn, perpetrator of B-movies in the early 1960s, game warden in Kenya and finally war correspondent during the Vietnam conflict – would rate enough material for a 10-hour mini-series. Only his disappearance is covered in “The Road to Freedom.”
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Flynn, who famously first came to light during a vicious custody battle between his mother Lili Damita and father Errol Flynn, probably deserves a better narrative treatment than the soft soap that is “The Road to Freedom.” He is written and portrayed rather blandly, and the road he does travel as a reporter in war-torn Cambodia is paved with what looks like the same five soldiers of the Khmer Rouge regime.
Joshua Fredric Smith portrays Flynn, who is characterized by his roguish looks and reporter’s instinct. It is learned that he will go the extra mile to get the story,...

Kevin Kangas, writer and director of the Fear Of Clowns movies, got in touch with news and a couple of exclusive photos (see them below) from his latest feature, Bounty. The basic premise is simple, Kangas tells us: “What if Dog the Bounty Hunter was in a horror film?
“It’s about a team of seasoned bounty hunters on the trail of a man who appears to be a serial killer, but the truth is much worse,” he continues. “It’s a strange movie, and I’ve been pretty vague about it because I don’t want people going in knowing very much. But fans of horror who are also into Cops and Dog The Bounty Hunter—I’m one of them—will probably enjoy it. Like my other films, Bounty was shot entirely in Maryland, primarily in Glen Burnie and Baltimore, and it stars cage-fighter-turned-actor Tom Proctor, Neil Conway,...
