“True Detective” season four, officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” has returned the HBO crime series to its former glories after seasons two and three disappointed. This entry follows Jodie Foster as a police chief investigating the vanishing of eight men in the spooky, fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
One of many things, along with the eerie town and Lovecraftian seasoning, that makes this series so excellent is its cast. Two-time Oscar-winner Foster is joined by a trio of other veterans — Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, and John Hawkes — plus a pair of newcomers: former boxer Kali Reis and rising star Finn Bennett. Bennett plays police Officer Peter Prior, the son of Hawkes’ Captain Prior, and he turns in a nuanced, memorable performance. Critics have agreed, too, he makes the strongest impression amongst the series’ supporting cast.

This article contains spoilers for the "True Detective: Night Country" finale.
When "True Detective" aired back in 2014, one of the things that made it so darkly alluring was the folk and cosmic horror element. One of the most salient examples of this was the spiral symbol, which was first seen tattooed on the back of murder victim Dora Lange in the pilot episode. Alas, as the season went on, all we learned about this mysterious motif was that it was somehow tied to the cult responsible for Lange's murder and an ongoing child trafficking operation in Southern Louisiana. That and it seemed to symbolize Rust Cohle's (Matthew McConaughey) famous "Time is a flat circle" line.
After this, show creator Nic Pizzolatto largely ignored the spiral, aside from a brief mention in season 3 of the show. But then, Mexican filmmaker Issa López took over as showrunner, and in 2023, the trailer...

Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) are the focal points of "True Detective: Night Country" for good reason. To witness a clash between two equally strong personalities is nothing short of riveting, especially when Liz and Naravarro make a solid team, despite their innate differences. The two women have been dealing with their inner demons in markedly different ways so far — while Danvers suppresses her trauma with impulsive, headstrong actions, Navarro suffers in silence and channels her rage into solving the Tsalal/Annie K. case. However, there is a third individual in Ennis who is integral to the investigation and has seldom gotten the credit: Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), and his single-minded dedication to the case needs to be talked about if we are to discuss the complicated web of conspiracies gripping the town.

The complaints about True Detective: Night Country have mostly had to do with the pacing and the show’s focus on interpersonal drama, which may have come at the expense of the storylines that one typically expects of a series centering on a murder investigation.
But even the harshest critics would have to agree that showrunner Issa Lopez has made some bold and impactful visual choices, and the opening scenes of True Detective Season 4 Episode 5 featured some of her most memorable flourishes yet.
From the beginning of its pilot episode, this show has leaned heavily on its primary aesthetic motifs -- namely, coldness and darkness.
Yet we begin this episode with flames and fluorescent light, ironically in service of one of this season's bleakest storylines (not that any of the subplots here are rays of sunshine).

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "True Detective: Night Country."
Is "True Detective" messing with us, or are all those major fan theories out there officially off the mark? In fairness, there have been a few loose threads intentionally left dangling over our heads throughout the season, driving speculation among viewers into a fever pitch over all the potential explanations (supernatural or otherwise) that could be offered by what's sure to be a gripping finale. But perhaps that's the one downside of a series drawing comparisons to a mystery-box show like "Lost." When certain developments hint at something much more mundane, fans can't help but feel like the wind has just been sucked right out of their sails. That seems to be the case with episode 5, which offered up one possible hint at what that creepy-looking spiral symbol really means.

A lot is going down in "True Detective: Night Country" at the moment, as the mysterious Tsalal fiasco and the unsolved Annie K murder have been proven to have closer ties than ever before. With a ton of leads pointing towards dead ends, detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) finally made a breakthrough after cornering Otis Heiss (Klaus Tange), a drifter who drew the map for the ice caves before 1998. Thanks to the efforts of Officer Peter Prior (Finn Bennett), Danvers links the fate of Anders Lund with that of Heiss, whose corneas burned and ears ruptured after a terrible mining accident years ago. When Danvers finds Heiss, he utters the phrase "Night Country," and hints at how it might be an actual space linked to the horrifying events in Ennis.

Spoilers follow.
Well, we're five episodes into "True Detective: Night Country" and the mystery just keeps getting more... mysterious. What caused a group of research scientists to perish in apparent anguish on the Alaskan tundra? How is that linked to the murder of Annie Kowtok, an Indigenous woman whose body was found dumped in the small town of Ennis some years before the discovery of the scientist's bodies? And how does the spiral from season 1 fit into all of this?
At this point, there's all sorts of speculation among fans, including talk of pollution causing the inhabitants of Ennis, Alaska to lose their minds, and even a potential Lovecraftian creature that would finally fulfill the cosmic horror promises of season 1. Considering new showrunner Issa López's penchant for weaving the paranormal with gritty realism, as evidenced in her 2017 feature "Tigers Are Not Afraid," it wouldn't be completely out of the...

[This story contains major spoilers from episode five of True Detective: Night Country, which released Friday over Super Bowl weekend.]
While Jodie Foster and Kali Reis’ Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro are the two detectives at the heart of creator Issa López‘s True Detective: Night Country, there is another vital twosome at the center of the series: Hank and Pete Prior, the father and son duo who both serve as police officers in Ennis, Alaska.
Well, not both of them, not anymore.
The penultimate episode of the HBO crime drama’s fourth iteration sees an explosive climax in the relationship between the Priors, fraught and tense as it was all season long. Hank, played by HBO veteran John Hawkes of Deadwood fame, has long been a crooked cop, doing favors for money. But his final assignment to kill a witness sees him pass a point of no return. Despite his initial reservations, Hank accepts the task, kills a...

With just a few episodes left in True Detective: Night Country, we seem to be no closer to finding out what happened to the researchers at the Tsalal Research Facility. One thing is for certain: Night Country is unlike any of the previous three seasons of the Emmy Award-winning series.
Episode three ended with two jaw-dropping scenes. In one, Dr. Anders Lund sat up in his hospital bed and, in a demonic voice, said, “Hello, Evangeline. Your mother says hello. She’s waiting for you.” In the other, a cell phone video shows Annie saying, “My name is Annie Kowtok. If anything happens to me…” before the phone is ripped away and she screams.
As episode four opens, Chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) can’t sleep, so she watches the video of Annie Kowtok again.

Having exhausted their investigation for the day, our titular true detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) receive a phone call from junior cop Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) to provide them with a fresh lead.
Whether it’s with two minutes left to go in the hour or eight minutes, the Prior dispatch arrives each time like clockwork. At the end of episode 2, Pete calls to report that one of the scientists is missing from the thawing block of said ice. We’re halfway through the critically acclaimed True Detective: Night Country six-episode season, and even the arrival of episode three hasn’t made the killer’s identity any clearer. Episode three opens with a trip seven years in the past and a visit with the murder victim at the heart of the investigation.
Ennis Police Officer Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) shows up to arrest Annie Kowtok for trespassing and destruction of the mines and is met with screaming from inside the building. The building turns out to be a birthing center, and Navarro discovers that Annie is currently busy performing midwife duties. Instead of immediately arresting Annie, Navarro finds herself helping with the delivery. The new mom-to-be realizes the baby isn’t crying and becomes hysterical. Annie works to revive the baby, and suddenly,...

As we’ve previously discussed, True Detective Season 4 has taken on an awful lot in terms of plot, theme, character development, and just about every other aspect of storytelling.
In fact, if someone asked what this series is about, you could play it safe and say, “A murder investigation in Alaska,” or you could go the pretentious route and say, “Everything.”
The latter response might be a little smug, but it’s just as accurate. Folks, this show is the anti-Seinfeld!
Race, class, religion, the never-ending war between the sexes, and the very origins of human life were all topics that came up for discussion in the first two episodes of Issa Lopez’s wildly ambitious crime drama.
And True Detective Season 4 Episode 3 maintains that focus on the big picture approach with an opening scene in which Annie K. is acting as midwife while a native woman gives birth.

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot points from Episode 3 of HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” titled “Part 3,” now streaming on Max.
In the second episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Rose (Fiona Shaw), the Ennis resident who led the police to the corpsicle of scientists, warns Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) about getting involved with the investigation. She says, “Maybe leave this one for someone else, Missy.” Unfortunately, Navarro did not heed Rose’s advice. Drawn to the case and determined to connect it with a six-year-old cold case, the death of Indigenous midwife and activist Annie Kowtok, Navarro has thrust herself headfirst into the inquest, even teaming back up with her arch nemesis, Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster), Ennis’ chief of police.

The new season of the much anticipated HBO series True Detective is finally here with a whole new cast and a new showrunner. HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, season four of the award-winning anthology, began with the mind-blowing discovery that an entire research team just up and vanished, leaving food on counters and a DVD playing back at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska. Episode one introduced Academy Award-winner Jodie Foster as Ennis Police Chief Liz Danvers and Kali Reis as Alaska Trooper Evangeline Navarro, who will be – reluctantly – teaming up to figure out what happened to the researchers, a disappearance that Navarro believes is connected to the cold case of a local activist and midwife who was brutally murdered six years ago.
Episode two kicks off with Liz and Officer Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) examining the researchers’ frozen bodies, which were discovered outside of town at the end of the season premiere.

If the “Night Country” subtitle didn’t already give it away, True Detective season 4 is a bit of a departure from the previous three installments of HBO‘s beloved crime anthology.
Original True Detective creator and writer of the first three seasons Nic Pizzolatto is no longer involved with the series. That’s something that he’s elected to make very clear from his Instagram.
In Pizzolatto’s place has stepped indie auteur Issa López to craft a story about two mismatched detectives investigating a spooky crime in the perpetual night of Northern Alaska. Still, despite López’s lack of connection to the first three seasons of True Detective (or maybe even because of it), Night Country features more Easter eggs and callbacks to True Detective‘s first season than any other season has attempted by far. Not only was the crime anthology series returning after an extended break, the trailer for "Night Country" contained several spiral symbols, suggesting fans of the first season were in for a treat.
Back in 2014, season 1 of Nic Pizzolatto's series introduced us to detectives Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), whose investigation into the disappearance and murder of several girls in and around Lafayette, Louisiana, led them to uncover a child abuse ring with members in the upper echelons of society. Season one starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and season two focused on characters played by Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdams. Season three, which debuted in January 2019, starred Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, and Stephen Dorff. Season four marks the first time the central characters are two powerful, uncompromising women detectives, Ennis Police...

With panoramic shots of a wind-swept tundra and a skyline studded with jagged mountaintops, the opening scene of True Detective Season 4 Episode 1 strikes a grandiose tone.
It feels closer to Game of Thrones’ Wildling storylines than to the claustrophobic, gritty interiors that we’ve come to expect from HBO’s divisive cop drama.
Even after the requisite large firearm makes its first appearance -- via a frightened hunter aiming his rifle at a herd of stampeding reindeer -- there's little to give the viewer the sense that we're in 21st-century America, rather than someplace much more exotic and archaic.
It's only when the action shifts inside that the show's fourth season -- helmed by Issa Lopez, who replaces series creator Nic Pizzolatto as showrunner -- begins to bear any resemblance to its first three.

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.
True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Foster is joined by a number of other talented actors, including Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, and Christopher Eccleston.
Here’s everyone you need to know in True Detective: Night Country, and where you’ve seen them before.

"True Detective" has been a rough beast. The first season felt like it came out of nowhere, and proceeded to blow our minds in the process. Arriving at the height of The McConaissance, when Matthew McConaughey stopped making awful rom-coms and reminded us all he was a great actor, the first season, created by Nic Pizzolatto and helmed entirely by Cary Joji Fukunaga, was the very definition of must-see TV. A strange, funny, existential bit of pulp, the series featured McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as mismatched cops looking into ritualistic murders. That first season occasionally hinted at the supernatural while never fully embracing it, and despite its bleaker-than-bleak nature, ended on a surprisingly hopeful note. After all, that season concluded with McConaughey's miserable Rust Cohle commenting: "Well, once there was only dark. You ask me, the light's winning."

Plot: When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.
Review: Few shows have made an impression the way the first season of True Detective did. While I enjoyed the second and third seasons of Nic Pizzolatto’s anthology thriller, neither could hold a candle to the Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey-led debut. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, True Detective was a philosophical and existential masterpiece full of quotable lines that had audiences brainstorming multiple timelines for ten weeks straight. A decade after the series premiered, the fourth season of True Detective arrives with the first subtitle in the series, Night Country,...
