Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired North American rights to Ethan Hawke’s portrait of Flannery O’Connor, Wildcat, starring and executive produced by Maya Hawke. The film had its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival. Oscilloscope will release the film in theaters in the Spring.
Directed and co-written by 4-time Academy Award nominee Ethan Hawke, Wildcat tells the story of Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor’s as she ponders the great questions of her writing: Can scandalous art still serve God? Does suffering precede all greatness? Can illness be a blessing?
In 1950, Flannery (Maya Hawke) visits her mother Regina (Laura Linney) in Georgia when she is diagnosed with lupus at 24 years old. Struggling with the same disease that took her father’s life when she was a child and desperate to make her mark as a great writer, this crisis pitches her imagination into a feverish exploration of belief. As...

Ethan Hawke has directed, written and/or acted in quite a few notably esoteric projects throughout his multi-faceted career, and he’s now come up with another in Wildcat. This one makes use of four Flannery O’Connor stories that tie in to aspects of the writer’s difficult life and truly do illuminate aspects of it in clever and plausible ways. The general public would have no clue as to what’s going on in this often perceptively made film that connects with her work, but the episodes are frequently weird, abruptly amusing and almost always cleverly pertinent in some way.
There’s no question but that Wildcat is a small, narrowly focused work that will be of interest mainly to college literature students, southern academics and particular female writers. But kudos to Hawke for putting even a small spotlight on this singular American writer who, while working through dreadful medical ailments,...

Ace Eddies: ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ ‘Everything Everywhere’ win over Oscar rivals for Best Film Editing
“Top Gun: Maverick” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 5. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Elvis” and “Tár ” — as well as “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Woman King.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “Everything Everywhere All at Once ” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “The Banshees of Inisherin,” plus “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”, “The Menu” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in 10 of the 14 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture.

American Cinema Editors announced winners in 14 categories March 5 during the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards. And all five Oscar nominees were included among the nominations — though spread out between two categories.
Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has also won the Academy Award 13 of 22 times‚ but not in the last three years. Whether or not that streak will hold remains murky since Oscar nominees “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” both took home trophies.
“The Woman King” director Gina Prince-Bythewood received the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award, while film editors Lynne Willingham and Don Zimmerman received Career Achievement Awards.
Other winners included awards season faves “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” “Fire of Love,” and “The Bear.” See the complete list of winners, marked in bold, below.

Deep into “The Last Movie Stars” — a six-episode HBO Max documentary series directed by Ethan Hawke — Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward appear on the cover of a 1980 issue of McCall’s magazine. In the headline, his name comes first, then hers, then a reference to “their very private marriage.”
This may come as a surprise, even as the order of names, and Newman’s face forcing Woodward’s to the cover’s bottom half, make perfect sense. With movies like “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Hustler” in the canon, and Newman’s face smiling benevolently across every American salad-dressing aisle, the scope of his fame made the world see the accomplished Woodward as his wife before she was an artist. But “private”? Really? The pair’s marriage was widely discussed and covered by the press; they worked together frequently and appeared as a proto-Tom and Rita, the vision of successful marriage,...

Here’s something to chew on. IFC Midnight has acquired all North American and UK rights to Chris James Thompson's documentary “The Jeffrey Dahmer Files,” which had its world premiere in competition at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival (where it screened with the title "Jeff"). The specialty distributor plans an early 2013 release for the project, which investigates the life and madness of the infamous serial killer through interviews with the people of Milwaukee who knew or came into contact with Dahmer before and after his 1991 arrest. Andrew Swant and Joe Riepenhoff wrote the screenplay with Thompson, who also produced along with Jack Turner. Chris Smith and Barry Poltermann are executive producers. “Chris James Thompson has made one of the creepiest documentaries of the year that lingers in the mind long after the film has ended,” said Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring. “He's approached the...

Encino, CA - While Charles Nelson Reilly is beloved for his time on Match Game, there’s more to this actor than Dumb Dora answers. He was the toast of Broadway with roles in Hello Dolly and Bye, Bye, Birdie and won the Tony for How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying. Later in life he directed several plays on the Great White Way. While many actors sum up their lives in thick tomes, Charles created a one-man show. He was a stage performer so this was the best way to distill his experiences for an audience. The Life of Reilly captures his final performance before his passing in 2007.
After playing the festival circuit and a limited theatrical release, Life of Reilly is finally out on DVD, Blu-ray and iTunes. You can take Charles every where. In edition to the feature film, there’s tons of bonus features including...

NEW YORK -- Those who recall Charles Nelson Reilly merely as a kitschy comic television personality who frequented game shows, sitcoms and Johnny Carson's Tonight Show will be surprised by the emotional depths and warm humor of The Life of Reilly.
This filmed version of the one-person stage show performed by Reilly for several years before his death this year has an inevitably static quality, but it also offers a revelatory portrait of a multitalented entertainment figure.
Looking and sounding frail -- the film was shot during his final stage performances, when he already was quite ill -- Reilly offers a wonderfully entertaining account of his life and career. He concentrates less on his well-known stints on such television shows as Match Game and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir -- in which he exploited his quivering voice and fussy mannerisms to great comic effect -- than on his childhood years and early success on Broadway.
He relates stories about his upbringing by his supportive if bigoted mother -- "Save it for the stage" was her mantra that propelled him toward a life in show business -- and embittered father, not to mention an aunt who ultimately was lobotomized. He proudly describes his first experience performing in a grade-school production of Columbus the Man, of which faded home movies are included here.
He goes on to amusingly describe his experiences studying under Uta Hagen in a class that seemingly included every acting luminary of the next few decades.
He touches little on his personal life and gayness, saved for a pointed anecdote about being told early in his career by a television executive that there was no place for homosexuals on television.
Despite his obvious infirmities, Reilly infuses his performance with a great deal of energy -- frequently shouting his lines for emphasis -- and, of course, perfect comic timing. It's fortunate that we have this filmed record -- directed by Barry Poltermann and Frank Anderson -- of a memorable solo performance by a true show business original.

The South by Southwest Film Festival, which runs March 10-18 in Austin, will kick off with the North American premiere of Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, an adaptation of Garrison Keiller's radio show, and will conclude with the closing-night feature American Dreamz, a satirical look at politics and pop culture directed by Paul Weitz and starring Hugh Grant, Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore. The festival's Spotlight Premieres section will include several features about real-life figures. The lineup includes Mary Harron's The Notorious Bettie Page, about the '50s pinup model; Nick Doob and Chris Hegedus' Al Franken in God Spoke, about political commentator Al Franken; Tom Caltabiano's 95 Miles to Go, which follows comedian Ray Romano on a stand-up tour; Barry Poltermann and Frank Anderson's The Life of Reilly, in which Charles Nelson Reilly performs his one-man show; Ron Mann's Tales of the Rat Fink, a look at hot-rod designer Ed "Big Daddy" Roth; and Harry Moses' Who the $#%& is Jackson Pollock, about painter Jackson Pollock.
PARK CITY, Utah -- Uncle Bill lives in a trailer with 240 grand stashed somewhere or other, but the guy has trouble remembering to cut his toenails. And, he's executive producing a low-budget horror movie, thanks to the unrelenting sales job of his nephew Mark to wheedle $3,000 from him. An uproarious but kindly document of an obsessed young man's struggle to make his film in the decidedly un-Mecca-like environs of Menomonee Falls, Wis., "American Movie" is one of the real finds of the Sundance Film Festival. The Sony Pictures Classics release will win appreciative festival play as well as select-site audience kudos with this invigorating tale of one man's dream to make a film.
Even by cheesehead standards, 30-year-old "filmmaker" Mark Borchardt has some leaks in his dreamboat. Although he's obsessed with making a movie, Mark Been's floundering for the last half-dozen years. He's subsisted by living at home, slogging through odd jobs and arm-twisting anyone with a six-pack attention span to sign on for his movie. As you'd expect, there's not much enthusiasm among his practical-minded peers and Milwaukee-area family for making a movie.
With deadpan detachment, but also bracing warmth, filmmaker Chris Smith has charted a modern-day, Midwestern "Rocky", as blue-collar Mark sets out against all odds and good advice to make his film. Admittedly, it's an obsession and a bit of a screwy one, but that's what makes it so great -- it's no safe, well-charted road to a cushy, 9-to-5 ending. Armed with only an appreciation for movie classics -- "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Night of the Living Dead", etc. -- Mark is clearly not only an underdog, but a guy who is a bit self-destructive.
While Smith's focus is Mark's dream to make a movie, "American Movie" is, in a larger sense, a depiction of the fractured but vital fringe of the American Dream. As ever, dreamers get no encouragement from the mainstream, and anything that is worth doing has always been ridiculed by the practical folk. Truly, no one accused Mark of being practical -- that's his most winning characteristic.
Even-handed in its framing of Mark and his filmmaking, Wisconsin-based Smith's documentation is encompassing, showing Mark's laggardly lifestyle, his boozing binges with buddies, as well as his remarkable resilience in dealing with the boggling obstacles that would make a nondreamer give up.
At once illuminating and hilarious, "American Movie" is bright, accomplished filmmaking. Smith's smart and entertaining depiction of this quixotic quest is carried out with all the technical skills and savvy of a veteran filmmaker. His cinematography is sharply drawn, framing succinctly and fairly Mark's life and dream quest. Other technical contributions are similarly articulate, especially Mike Schank's aptly rambunctious and raw music, clueing us to the energy and unstoppable tenacity of one man's triumph over himself and his worldly obstacles.
