Bryan Singer has started work on a 2012-based miniseries for the Syfy network, it has been reported. The X-Men director is to team with producer Andrew Dean to produce the as-yet-untitled six-hour project based on the 2012 apocalyptic prophecies, which emanate from the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21 of that year, Sci-Fi Wire reports. The plot has been described as a "thrilling action adventure story blending scientific fact and myth", and is said to be similar in tone to The Da Vinci Code. Bryan Singer Doing 2012 Miniseries

7 August 2009 12:58 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Bryan Singer has an infatuation, and it's not Superman. It turns out that he's got a thing for the Mayan 2012 prophecy and, since Roland Emmerich beat him to the punch in terms of feature film, the producer/director will team with Syfy to create a six-hour miniseries.

Singer to Approach 2012 Prophecy

The untitled miniseries will be written by Michael Petroni and Michael Bond. According to Sci Fi Wire, the project is a "thrilling action-adventure story blending scientific fact and myth with popular conspiracy theories centering on the Mayan calendar and what it predicts for mankind at its end date. With a feel of Da Vinci Code and National Treasure, it tells the story of a down-on-his-luck author/professor who goes on a worldwide adventure to uncover the mysteries surrounding the Mayan calendar and the potential apocalypse it seems to have predicted centuries ago. With an unlikely team, he races against time to prevent global catastrophe, »

Bryan Singer to profit from Mayan 2012 mystery

6 August 2009 12:36 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

X-Men and Superman Returns filmmaker Bryan Singer will be developing his second mini-series for SyFy. The as-yet untitled six-hour show will center on the various doomsday prophecies surrounding the end of the Mayan calendar in 2012.

"I have always been fascinated by the various myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the Mayan calendar," Singer said in a statement. "It's the most accurate calendar created by man, so accurate that many believe its origins may lie elsewhere. Regardless of what you believe, what is truly mysterious about this is that a number of cultures and religions, including Hinduism, all point toward a period of great upheaval which happens to coincide with the final month and year marked by the calendar. Our story will explore whether we are truly alone in the universe, and other related mysteries, all of which are set against the backdrop of an incredibly exciting and fast-paced adventure."

The end of the world doesn't seem to be a popular subject for movies only but also TV series. SyFy, formerly known as Sci Fi Channel, is crafting a miniseries with "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer sitting as the producer. The six-hour series will focus on the Mayan calendar prediction that the world will come to a stop in 2012.

"I have always been fascinated by the various myths and conspiracy theories surrounding the Mayan calendar," Singer was quoted as saying in a statement. Bryan Singer and Syfy Get on the 2012 Bandwagon

6 August 2009 12:38 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

For those of you that haven't heard, the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. We know this because the Mayan calendar ends on that date, and who are we to dispute the timetable skills of a long extinct culture. For those of you who are unsure of what to expect three years from now, Roland Emmerich has a movie opening this November depicting the apocalypse to come. Or you can wait another year for the Syfy Channel version Bryan Singer has in the works.

The X-Men 1 & 2 and Superman Returns director previously co-produced a "Bermuda Triangle" miniseries for the then Sci-Fi Channel, according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter. Now he's producing a currently untitled bit of "doomsday porn" (as I call it) built around the whole Mayan calendar/2012 Armageddon scenario. Michael Petroni, who was part of the creative team behind ABC's short-lived supernatural series "Miracles", has signed on »

Mikael Håfström is set to direct New Line Cinema's "The Rite," an upcoming fact-based thriller based on a nonfiction book by Matt Baglio.

According to Variety, the film follows a young man who joins the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism School, where he soon finds himself facing the devil.

Michael Petroni, whose credits include "Queen of the Damned" and the upcoming "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader," wrote the script.

Håfström also directed "Derailed" (a film I absolutely hated) and "1408" (one I mildly enjoyed). He's currently wrapping up "Shanghai," starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, John Cusack, David Morse and Franka Potente. »

1408 's Hafstrom to Direct Rite

The box office success of The Haunting in Connecticut , a supernatural tale rooted in reportedly real events, may have some studios dusting off similarly-themed scripts they have sitting on the shelf. One that we never thought we'd hear about again, Last Rite , is on the move at Contrafilm. Producers Beau Flynn, Tripp Vinson and Christy Fletcher have secured Mikael Hafstrom to direct this fact-based flick scripted by Michael Petroni. Hafstrom last directed the Stephen King adaptation 1408 . Mikael Hafstrom To Direct Last Rite

1 April 2009 1:58 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Mikael Hafstrom sure does love those scary fillums, doesn’t he? The Swedish director of 1408 has turned his attention to all things demonic by signing on to direct Last Rite, a thriller about the Vatican’s Exorcism School.Yes, it may be April Fool’s Day, but according to Matt Baglio’s non-fiction book of the same name, the Exorcism School does exist – and that’s pretty damn… sorry, darn awesome.Sadly, Hafstrom’s new movie won’t be a knockabout comedy, a la Police Academy, as bumbling new recruits get bashed into shape under the watchful eye of Max Von Sydow’s stern commandant. Instead, it will be a horror thriller about a new recruit’s struggle to come to terms with his faith – which he does by, ultimately, facing the Devil. After that, you’d have to say, it’s gotta be all downhill from there.Michael Petroni »

1408's Hafstrom to Administer Last Rite

1 April 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Last Rite has been one of those on-again, off-again projects so it struck me as interesting that it looks like the film is officially "on" now and even has a director attached.

Variety reported that Mikael Hafstrom will be helming Last Rite, which is a supernatural thriller penned by Michael Petroni (Queen of the Damned, The Dangerous Lives of Alter Boys).

Official synopsis:

"Last Rite tells the story of a young man who joins a seminary and is soon recruited into the Vatican's newly formed Exorcism School. There, he confronts the demonic and discovers his true faith by facing the devil."

While I generally dislike PG-13 horror flicks, I rather enjoyed director Hafstrom’s last genre movie, the John Cusack vehicle 1408. I guess that’s why I am actually kind of interested to see what he has to offer with this flick.

It’s still pretty early in the process »

The Possession of Sarah Michelle Gellar

6 March 2009 1:25 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Remember when Sarah Michelle Gellar was the kind of star who seemed fun to be around? She had charisma by the boatload on "Buffy", but as soon as she moved on to the big screen, she inexplicably left it all behind. Now all we have is the pensive looking Gellar who needs to wear a white turtleneck and scarf in every film. The downward spiral continues as her latest movie Possession has been exorcised to home video.

Fox Home Entertainment announced today that the flick would be hitting DVD and Blu-ray on May 12th, 2009. Look for specs and official artwork soon.

Directed by Michael Petroni, Possession tells the tale of a woman (Gellar) whose life is thrown into chaos after a freak car accident sends her husband and brother-in-law into comas. Frights ensue after the brother-in-law wakes up, thinking he's his brother.
