I've never heard of Mouse Guard until today, but it's an Eisner-award winning graphic novel series from writer/illustrator David Petersen that's been around for a decade at this point, so I'm sure some of you are fans of it. Now Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, will produce a Mouse Guard film adaptation that's going to be written by Gary Whitta, one of the writers of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Before we go any further, check out the synopsis of Mouse Guard from Amazon:
In Mouse Guard, mice struggle to live safely and prosper among all of the world's harsh conditions and predators. Thus the Mouse Guard was formed. They are not simply soldiers that fight off intruders; rather, they are guides for common mice looking to journey without confrontation from one hidden mouse village to another. The Guard patrol borders,...

Beloved, best-selling comic book series "Mouse Guard" is about to get the big screen treatment, and the project has already locked in some major talent. Matt Reeves, the man responsible for Cloverfield and the latter two modern Planet Of The Apes movies, will sit in the director's chair, while Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Book Of Eli) will be writing it.
The Hollywood Reporter has brought to light that the production will utilize groundbreaking technology from the Apes franchise, as well as the tools Jon Favreau used to make The Jungle Book, to bring Mouse Guard vividly to life.

Following the success of Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book earlier this year, CG live-action is becoming an increasingly appealing prospect for Hollywood studios. Fox is jumping aboard that trend by optioning the very popular, bi-monthly, independent comic book series Mouse Guard for adaptation – with Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) writing the screenplay.
Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) will produce the project, which will see the characters of these graphic novels brought to life. The source material first launched in 2006, and was created by David Petersen. It tells the story of medieval, anthropomorphic mice, and the way in which they protect their community from predators and foe. With ten years of storytelling to play with, in addition to a number of spin-off series, Fox will be hoping that Mouse Guard will be the beginning of a brand new franchise opportunity for the studio.

David Petersen's fantastic graphic novel series Mouse Guard is finally getting adapted for the big screen and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Gary Whitta is writing the script for Twentieth Century Fox. Set in a medieval landscape, the first issue of Mouse Guard was released back in 2006 from indie publisher Archaia (now an imprint of Boom! Studios). Focusing on walking, talking mice Saxon, Kenzie, and Lieam, the series exists in a world where humans don't exist. And it's come a long way since it began, spawning anthology series The Legends of the Guard as well as a roleplaying game. The movie itself has been a long time coming. As early as 2008 I spoke with Petersen, who at the time had producer David Kirschner attached to help adapt Fall into a film. The latest news has Matt Reeves and Gary Whitta attached. The Hollywood Reporter writes: Twentieth Century Fox...

Moving right along to the Face Off Season 10 episode 3 recap. In this episode we’re dealing with lost languages and what the speakers of those languages might have looked like. We’re introduced to David Peterson, a professional language creator. How cool is that job title? David has created languages for the Face Off artists. Again, they will be working in pairs (which they get to choose themselves this time). Each team has to go into a ‘shrine’ to pick an artifact which represents an ancient tribe. That artifact corresponds with a language sketch. This week’s pairs: Njoroge & Ant … Continue reading →

Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard #1
Written/drawn by David Petersen, Mark Buckingham, Skottie Young, Hannah Christenson
Published by Boom!/Archaia
At the June Alley Inn, should you lack the funds to pay for your food, drink, or lodging you can open a tab. Should that tab remain unpaid, the Proprietor will propose a trade. A tale in exchange for a clean bill. But not just any tale will do. It must be an original story, and best tale you’ve ever told.
This is the premise for the four volume Mouse Guard: Legend of the Guard, and volume three does not disappoint.
Everyone has a story to tell. Stories are part of our past, present, and future. At one time, storytelling was the only form of entertainment. With the rise of technology, the tradition of storytelling has faded into legend. So it’s nice to see the idea of...

The panelists were Boom! founder/CEO Ross Richie, publisher Filip Sablik, editor-in-chief Matt Gagnon, and writers Mark Waid (Irredeemable), Marguerite Bennett (Sleepy Hollow), and James Tynion IV (The Woods). Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows) made a surprise appearance, and other creators showed up via pre-recorded video.

With "Dominion" premiering June 19th, Syfy recently hosted a conference call with star Chris Egan and exec producer/creator Vaun Wilmott, and we have the highlights for you here.
Settle in a bit because it's a long, wide-ranging discussion that touches upon the mythology of the TV show vs. the movie (2010's Legion) and how things have changed - Wilmott promises for the better - in this adaptation. He also describes the caste system in place in Vega society, what other worlds and supernatural beings we might see, and what the plan is for future seasons.
Egan elaborates on his character (soldier Alex Lannon) and his relationships with both the Archangel Michael and the upper class Claire Riesen. Of course the great Anthony Head's name comes up as well as how much like the angels we know from religion these guys really are.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

The third episode of the current season of Game of Thrones, which is featured on the cover of Rolling Stone, contains an Easter egg of Arthurian proportions: Monty Python references. The show's linguist, David Peterson, has revealed that the references appear in the scene where Daario Naharis faces off with the champion of Meereen and the latter shouts at Daenerys Targaryen in some foreign tongue. Although she asks what the invective means, she does not get an accurate translation. "He's actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy's...

Sometimes it's nice when the nerds behind the nerdy thing you're nerdy about are nerdy about other things you're nerdy about. Cue Game of Thrones' linguist David Peterson. He revealed an Easter egg from the third episode of this season, from the scene in which Daario Naharis goes up against the champion of Meereen. The champion shouts something at Daenerys, but Missandei is not translating what he's saying. "He's actually saying a Low Valyrian translation of the French guy's insults in Monty Python and the Holy Grail," Peterson explained. It was apparently the idea of series co-creator D. B. Weiss. Because pissing in the sand in front of Daenerys is not enough, a real bad guy also farts in her general direction.

As defenders of the cosmos go, Rocket Raccoon has faced his fair share of galactic battles. He’s been a hero to the weak, a champion of the good, a protector to the innocent, and a heartthrob to many intergalactic species across the cosmos. But is he ready to be a raccoon on the run?!
Rocket’s high-flying life of adventure and heroism may soon be a thing of the past when he becomes framed for something he didn’t do! And the authorities aren’t the only ones hot on his Tail! (Yeah, we went there.)
With his pal Groot at his side, Rocket will have to blast his way out of trouble (and blast his way into some) if he wants to clear his name.

This is the time of year when the ComicMix crew starts to firm up our attendance at various comic conventions in the year ahead. It’s a frustrating process because there are a lot of shows and we can’t go to all the ones we’d like to attend.
It also makes me really angry.
Last year was the first in a long time that I went to a bunch of cons. It was fascinating and fun most of the time, but annoying at others. Twenty years after we started Friends of Lulu, there are still remarkably few women invited to be guests at the shows.
This is odd, because there are a lot of women working in the industry, and (capitalists take note) even more buying comics and tickets to cons. Wouldn’t show organizers like to demonstrate to this market segment that they are welcome and valued?...

War is never pretty, especially if it involves an alien invasion.
After a far-off solar system is destroyed, several remaining extraterrestrial races, collectively known as Votans, venture to Earth seeking a fresh start. Unsympathetic to their plight, the planet's nations turn them away, sparking a devastating battle that leaves the globe and environment drastically changed forever. Thirty-four years later, the two sides have called a ceasefire and are trying to coexist in this hostile new frontier. That's the premise behind the ambitious sci-fi drama "Defiance" (premiering April 15 on Showcase and SyFy).
The series finds anti-hero Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler, "Ugly Betty"), a reluctant lawkeeper, attempting to keep the peace in the small town of Defiance, where cultures clash and internal, as well as external, conflicts jeopardize their existence. To make matters worse, a tremendous amount of technology has been lost. There's still functioning electricity, but no satellites, internet or air travel.

To celebrate the game's launch and to help whet your appetites for the debut of "Defiance" on Syfy in just a few more days, we have the highlights of a conference call with the executive producer/showrunner for the series, Kevin Murphy, and Trion's vice president of development, Nathan Richardson.
Q: Could one or both of you fill us in on how this all started?
Kevin Murphy: I'll jump in on that. It's been five years in the making. About five years ago Dave Howe from Syfy and Lars Butler from Trion got together because Syfy had made a large investment in Trion, and they were looking for a project to do together. So they looked through the...

"Game of Thrones" had it's Season 2 premiere on April 1, and we finally got to listen to Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) speak Dothraki again. It's not just nonsense. It's actually a language created by is Language Creation Society president David Peterson, according to the New York Post. He took the phrases that author George R.R. Martin wrote in his books and created a full language.
The language currently has 3,500 words. Peterson hopes to get it to 8,000. Impress your friends with the translation below.

The London Super Comic Convention happened this weekend at the Excel Centre in East London. Stan Lee was there. As was one ‘Jack Kirby’ (that’s me!) and my companion for the day, Mat Barnett. Neither of us had been to a comic convention before, but there was much of what you might have expected to see on display: lots of stalls selling vintage comics, a Forbidden Planet merchandise stand, signing sessions and discussion panels. Oh and cosplay people. Quite a lot of those.
So far, so much what you might reasonably expect from film and television. But where’s the story there? In the name of investigative journalism, Barnett and I took it upon ourselves to find out what really makes a comic convention tick, to see behind the metaphorical curtain, to peek through the Perspex window on the security door of reality; in short to seek the truth,...

Hey girl, we know that you love Ryan Gosling. But we also know that you appreciate Ted Danson's work on "Bored To Death," and have fond memories of Bill Cosby's endorsement of Pudding Pops, which is why we are presenting you with a few more images from your favorite street artist, Hanksy.
For those not in the know, Hanksy is a prankster who has been stenciling Banksy-like works featuring Tom Hanks around New York. A few weeks ago, we featured Hanksy's work on the Arts page and it seems like a lot of people have a soft spot for weird images of Tom Hanks. In an interview with The Awl, Hanksy said about his work: "It's lighthearted and doesn't try too hard to be profound or serious."
You can see a couple of Hanksy's pieces up at Krause Gallery now, as well as work by the knitting maven Olek,...

Martin Luther King, Jr Day is Monday, so Indiewire's curation of Hulu's Documentaries page offers the story of his assassination, a number of profiles of African-American activists, personalities, and communities, and a portrait of South Africa's symbol of resistance against institutionalized racism. Stephen Ives' "Roads to Memphis," which screened as part of PBS' "American Experience," recounts how both Mlk Jr and his assassin, James Earl Ray, came to Memphis on the fateful day of April 4, 1968 that claimed the influential African-American activist's life. Individuals who were part of King's inner circle reflect on their friend and ally and on his work to bring true equality to all Americans. David Petersen's moving "Let the Church Say Amen," which premiered at Sundance, puts the spotlight on World Missions for Christ Church, a Washington, DC house of worship whose parishioners are largely poor...
