The Ott space is filled with police procedural dramas. We have seen serial killer and murder investigation dramas that showcase cops as regular people who have a life outside of their jobs. Then there are commercial releases that demonize the police force. Adding to this list is Mathagam, which loosely translates to the head of a person, animal, or object. Directed by Prasad Murugesan, the show is a Tamil-language Disney+ Hotstar special that was released on August 18th, 2023.
Mathagam Part 1, which includes five episodes, takes us through a long operation carried out by Ashwath and his boss, the city commissioner, to go after the dreaded criminal Padalam Sekar. He allegedly died in a car crash, but the police received information from the unlikeliest of sources about the man being alive.
They learn that Padalam Sekar is slyly gathering the entire Chennai underworld under one roof without disclosing his agenda. Ashwath is hell-bent on capturing Sekar,...

Vanity Fair’s annual Oscar party took place Sunday at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. I have all the details from inside the event, which as usual attracted the most elite of the Hollywood set who poured in after watching Everything Everywhere All at Once score seven Oscar trophies including Best Picture.
We managed to get our hands on the guest list for the event, held in a 3,000-square-foot indoor reception area, with additional courtyards and other outdoor lounge spaces. The main bar, a prime gathering spot, was 40 feet long. The guests danced into the early-morning hours.

The 95th annual Academy Awards aired live Sunday night from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Jimmy Kimmel returned as host for the third time. He first took the helm in 2017 – the infamous year of “envelopegate” where La La Land was announced as the winner instead of Moonlight. However, this awards show went much smoother and without any major incidents.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was the big winner of the night, earning a total of seven Oscars, including Best Picture. The film’s seven wins make it the most won by a Best Picture winner since Slumdog Millionaire, which took home eight awards in 2008.
Among Everything Everywhere‘s wins include Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress. She made history as the first Asian woman to win Best Actress.

The films up for the 2023 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Elvis,” and “The Whale.” Our current odds show that “Elvis” (69/20) is favored to win, followed in order by “The Whale” (18/5), “The Batman” (9/2), “All Quiet on the Western Front” (9/2), and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (9/2).
Each of this category’s last five consecutive lineups has included a 70% first-time nominee majority, but this year’s rookie group is 16% smaller. The present subset is comprised of both “All Quiet on the Western Front” artists (Linda Eisenhamerova and Heike Merker) as well as two craftspeople from “The Whale” (Annemarie Bradley-Sherron and Judy Chin) and one each from “The Batman” (Michael Fontaine), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (Camille Friend), and “Elvis” (Jason Baird).

We have just one question for you regarding the Oscars: How do you feel about hot-dog fingers?
When the nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Jan. 24, the lineup was a traditional combination of the usual suspects and welcome outliers. The expected standouts from the fall festival circuit — your Tár, your Fabelmans, your Banshees of Inisherin — were nestled up next to some popular box-office favorites (Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis). Veteran performers and previous Oscar winners shared the acting categories with newbies and first-time...

Chris: It's been a while since Best Actor was the most exciting and unpredictable race of the evening. Heading into last weekend, it was truly a three man race between Austin Butler (Elvis), Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin). Now that both BAFTA and SAG have made like Brendan Gleeson and passed over Farrell, I sadly feel like he has dropped out of contention for the win. Of the nominated five, he was my personal vote. He knows how to dramatize Pádraic's hurt, while also finding the comedy in his tragedy. With just the crinkle of an eyebrow, he communicates such emotional vulnerability, a level to which we don't often see men rewarded for showing.

Brendan Fraser has done some daring things throughout his career. He donned a loin cloth and ran into trees for George of the Jungle. He put in a vulnerable performance under layers of fake flesh for the controversial The Whale. He starred in a movie with Pauly Shore.
But it’s that very affability that made Fraser such a beloved star. Whether running around with Bugs Bunny or listening longingly to legendary director James Whale, Fraser brought an openness that immediately brought the audience over to his side. The empathy he generates has been central to his recent resurgence, as fans across the internet cheered his appearances in the DC series Doom Patrol and the Steven Soderbergh release No Sudden Move. Heck, even those disgusted by the themes and visuals of The Whale still praise Fraser’s performance.

The multiverse film Everything Everywhere All At Once won best cast, best actress, best-supporting actor and best supporting actress at the 29th Annual SAG Awards on Sunday.
The film’s record-breaking four actors included victories for Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan, who became the first Asian actor to win in the Supporting Actor category.

“Elvis” took the crown at the 10th annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, leading all films. Presented Saturday evening at the Beverly Hilton, the Baz Luhrmann spectacle in which hair and makeup helped transform Austin Butler into Elvis Presley at every stage of his illustrious career, won two awards in the five feature-film categories, for period and/or character make-up and period and/or character hair styling.
Other film winners included “Everything Everywhere All at Once” for contemporary make-up, “The Whale” for special make-up effects and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” for contemporary hair styling.
“Elvis,” “The Whale,” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are all nominated for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, along with “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Batman.”
Since the Muahs Awards started up again after a hiatus in 2013, all but one Oscar winner for makeup and hair had previously won an award from the guild.

Age is just a number and it’s a sign that we’re all getting very, very old because we might actually get our first male acting Oscar winner who was born in the 1990s this year.
No man who entered this world in the ’90s has won an Oscar in either acting category yet. There are three currently in the running, two in Best Actor — Austin Butler (“Elvis”), who was born in 1991, and Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), who was born in 1996 — and one in Best Supporting Actor, Barry Keoghan (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), who was born in 1992. Ke Huy Quan, who played Harrison Ford’s 11-year-old sidekick Short Round in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” is all grown up now and ready to be an Oscar contender.
Quan, 51, has received rousing reviews for his turn as Waymond Wang, the delightfully goofy husband in the Daniels’ whimsical multiverse comedy “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Along the lines of past hardworking actors who received their big Oscar breaks later in their careers — such as Paul Raci for “Sound of Metal” (2020) and Troy Kotsur for “Coda” (2021) — Quan’s comeback story is one of the season’s bright spots.
Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast recently sat down with Quan to talk about “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” as well as where his career is going next and more. We began by discussing what he’s been up to in recent years. Listen below:

Brendan Fraser’s return to the movies was greeted with an adoring reception on Sunday night in Venice, one which seemed to even catch the star himself by surprise.
The Whale — Darren Aronofsky’s A24 drama touted as a career comeback for Fraser, the former Hollywood leading man who effectively disappeared from the big screen — had already been hyped as one of the must-watch films of the festival, and it garnered hugely positive responses following its first press screening on Saturday. The crowd at the world premiere on the Lido was just as enthusiastic, giving the film a boisterous seven-minute standing ovation.
Fraser gave several bows and was holding back tears as he appeared to be shaken and shocked by the reaction. The actor stopped to sign autographs and pose for photos on the stairs, and he also shared a hug and a chat with Steve Buscemi,...

A man pushing his body to physical extremes knows he's on his last leg. Plagued by regret, he reaches out to his long-estranged daughter who wants little to do with the man who abandoned her in pursuit of his own adulation. All the while, the man receives emotional support from a patient female service worker who supplies encouragement and exasperation in equal measure as she watches this decision's toll on both his body and soul.
Such is the plot of Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale." But if that description sounds familiar, it's also the rough contours of his previous film "The Wrestler." Like a moth drawn to a fast-burning flame in its final flickering moments, the filmmaker returns to further explore his obsession. Brendan Fraser's dangerously obese Charlie is yet another Aronfosky protagonist pushing the limits of the human body and learning the pursuant psychological strain on the soil.

The Best Actor Oscar has been the pinnacle for leading men since the first Academy Awards in 1929 when the film industry started honoring its best and brightest.
Candidates for 2023 are many, including Hugh Jackman (The Son), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Austin Butler (Elvis) and Christian Bale (Amsterdam), to mention but a few. Only time will tell who gets the next Best Actor Oscar, but time has told who the winners have been throughout history, and we have them all here for you.
The first winner was Emil Jannings, who was recognized for two films The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh. The latter film, directed by Victor Fleming, is considered a lost film. Only two fragments survive, both from the end, making Jannings’ Academy Award-winning performance the only one of which there is no complete copy. That first year is also the only time that Oscars were awarded for multiple performances.
