Tammy Faye, the Elton John-Jake Shears-James Graham musical about televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, will open at Broadway’s newly refurbished Palace Theater this fall with Katie Brayben and Andrew Rannells reprising their acclaimed London performances, producers announced today.
The musical will begin previews at the Palace on October 19, with an official opening on November 14.
Producers Rocket Stage, Greene Light Stage, and James L. Nederlander announced the move to Broadway last November, but specific dates and initial casting were revealed today. Additional casting will be announced in the coming months.
Brayben will recreate her Olivier Award-winning performance as Tammy Faye Bakker, and Rannells will reprise his Olivier-nominated performance as Jim Bakker. Both starred in the world premiere West End Olivier-nominated production that opened at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2022.
Tammy Faye features music by John, lyrics by Scissor Sisters’ Shears, and book by Ink playwright James Graham.

Exclusive: BBC commissioning executives are booked to see the award-winning musical Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which opens Wednesday night at the Gillian Lynne Theatre following its transfer from a sold-out season at the National Theatre. This column told you a year ago that StudioCanal’s Red Production company is developing the musical into a TV drama series.
The TV production will be based on the stage show by playwright Chris Bush and glorious songs from the catalog of singer-songwriter Richard Hawley. Sources tell me that a deal is strongly favored between Red and the BBC.
Bush is writing the screenplay for the series, expanding the storylines for characters they created for the show that originated at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in south Yorkshire in 2019, having been commissioned by Sheffield Theatres and producer Rupert Lord’s Various Productions.
Red pounced quickly and took out an option on the show...

Exclusive: Standing at the Sky’s Edge, which won best musical at the Olivier Awards Sunday night, will transfer to the West End’s Gillian Lynne Theatre early in 2024, Deadline can reveal.
The show written by playwright Chris Bush, featuring rock songs from the catalog of Richard Hawley, moves into the Gillian Lynne from February for an initial six-month season.
It won two prizes at Sunday’s ceremony: the all-important best musical honor and original score or new orchestrations for Hawley’s music and lyrics and Tom Deering’s orchestrations.
The story is set in Park Hill, a brutalist apartment block built in the early 1960s, and follows three families who occupy one particular flat at different periods over six decades. Hawley describes it as a “love letter” to his hometown of Sheffield in South Yorkshire.

Here’s the easiest prediction to make about this year’s Tony Awards, which will be presented June 13 at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall: Host Sean Hayes will almost certainly make some reference to the hullabaloo about being too gay to play a straight man in the musical Promises, Promises. The CBS broadcast will also have an excuse to present a production number from his show even though it didn’t snag a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. (There’s talk that the show will open with a medley of “pop songs you might not know are on Broadway.

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

Theatre’s highest honor – Broadway’s Oscar equivalent – unveiled its nominations for the 64th Annual Tony Awards.; and it’s quite “colorful,” if you catch my drift, thanks to strong runs by 3 productions, namely, David Mamet’s Race, Fela!, the musical, and the revival of August Wilson’s Fences. I’m privileged to say that I saw all 3 productions and enjoyed them!
Notable nods include Fela! for Best Musical, Fences for Best Revival Of A Play, Denzel Washington and Viola Davis for Best Performance by a Leading Actor & Actress in a Play (both for Fences), Sahr Ngaujah (Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical, for Fela!), Montego Glover (Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Memphis), David Alan Grier (Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, for Race), Lillias White (Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, for Fela!), Kenny Leon (Best Direction of a Play,...

Last night, a new revival of Jerry Herman and Harvey Fierstein’s 1983 musical “La Cage aux Folles” debuted at the Longacre theater, starring Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge, in his Broadway debut. Hodge began his run as Albin, a maternal drag queen and long-time partner to Grammer’s Georges, in London at the Menier Chocolate Factory, where he won an Olivier Award for his performance. Here’s a sampling of the mostly rapturous reviews:

Especially when mother is a quixotic, neurotic but undeniably goodhearted drag queen played by Douglas Hodge, who, by the way, is giving the most exuberant musical-comedy performance of the season.” [Michael Kuchwara, AP]
“Hodge and Grammer provide a solid grounding for the show, but the rest of the cast offers all the flourishes you’d expect from a show rooted in drag performance. The...
