[Warning: This post contains Major spoilers for the latest episode of Will Trent, “We Are Family.”] The latest episode of Will Trent not only reunited the titular character (Ramón Rodríguez) with a long-lost member of his family — Uncle Antonio (John Ortiz) — but the case of the day also hit home for a lot of folks in the LGBTQ+ community. In the episode, titled “We Are Family,” Will Trent and his team investigate a homicide that has taken place just outside of a dance club for drag performers. The victim turns out to be a conservative judge who just so happens to be the mother of one of the performers, Gabe Ringgold aka “Defcon Vibe” (Garrett Richmond). While video surveillance shows she had a scuffle with an extremist protestor who’d been lurking outside the building for some time, and her son confesses to the crime, it turns out that her killer is someone unexpected. The judge’s daughter ...

After the heaviness of the previous episode, Will Trent will return to heartwarming drama, levity, and humor in this upcoming installment.
The series excels at balancing both kinds of cases and character arcs, and spoilers for Will Trent Season 2 Episode 6 tease that Will will finally meet and connect with his long-lost uncle, Antonio Miranda.
Elsewhere in the episode, the Gbi and the Apd team up to solve a judge's murder, so they work together for two episodes in a row. From the spoiler photos, this case looks entertaining.
At the end of Will Trent Season 2 Episode 5, Will's Uncle Antonio reached out to him. Antonio Miranda is as curious about his nephew as Will is about him.
John Ortiz guest-stars as Antonio Miranda, who seems kind and charismatic and is eager to bond with Will.
While I'm anxious for Will to have a positive male role model, it feels like Lucy's brother got a total rewrite.

"You waded out into the deep end, and now you're drowning right before our eyes." Vertical has debuted the full official trailer for the wacky stoner comedy titled Poolman, marking the directorial debut of actor Chris Pine. He shot this film in 2022 when the pandemic was still on, and now it's set for release starting in May in theaters. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last fall, but got terrible reviews (and even a few walk outs) from most critics at the festival. Poolman is described as a stoner riff on the noir classic Chinatown. It's about a hapless dreamer and would-be philosopher who spends his days looking after the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block in sunny LA. When he uncovers the greatest water heist, he does what he can to protect his precious city. Chris Pine also stars in this as Darren Barrenman, the titular "poolman", with Annette Bening,...

“Ted Lasso,” “Yellowjackets,” “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and Renee Rapp were just a few of the winners from the 35th annual GLAAD Media Awards, held Thursday night at the Beverly Hilton.
It’s the first of two dual ceremonies — the second happens May 11 in New York City — but we’ll go out on a limb and say it’s the best one because it’s first, and in Los Angeles (just kidding). And prior to the awards actually being handed out, the stars were out in force with some absolutely iconic looks for the Red Carpet.
Among them were Sydney Sweeney, Wayne Brady, Chlöe, Jason Sudeikis, Niecy Nash, and that’s barely a sample. Read on and see some of the best outfits and fiercest attitudes from the GLAAD Media Awards 2024.

Jeffrey Wright is finally an Oscar nominee. The actor’s storied career had already brought him under the direction of masters such as Sidney Lumet, Ang Lee, and most recently, newcomer Cord Jefferson in the satirical dramedy “American Fiction.” But with his Oscar nom, Wright says he feels more supported than ever by the Hollywood community and studios.
“I’ve never had this level of support behind a project that I was central to from the powers that be, the business side of our industry,” he tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I’ve never had it until now. I’m really grateful for that. We’re here now, and I’m so pleased the film has been recognized across the board. With a small movie and 26 days of filming, our budget was probably the catering budget for the last Bond movie I did.”

When you have the SAG Award nominated ensemble of “American Fiction” – John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Tracee Ellis Ross and Jeffrey Wright (also individually nominated in male lead and Oscar nominated for the film) you have to ask them where it all began. In discussing their first jobs for the union, Ross revealed that, like many actors, she started with a commercial – this one for Infiniti cars.
But her co-stars soon revealed surprisingly momentous stories for their first SAG-AFTRA jobs. Wright noted his onscreen debut was opposite Burt Lancaster and Sidney Poitier in the 1991 miniseries “Separate but Equal” about the Brown v. Board of Education court case. “My first single was opposite Sidney Poitier,” Wright revealed. Cillian Murphy saluted the “unsung heroes” — the artists, engineers and craftspeople — who make Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Friday at the Advanced Imaging Society’s 14th Lumiere Awards. Murphy, who stars in the titular role of the Universal film, accepted the Lumiere for best live-action feature for the movie, on behalf of Nolan, Emma Thomas and the “family.”
The Advanced Imaging Society recognizes the intersection of art and technology, and the celebration of all who work on movies was shared throughout the luncheon ceremony, which was held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Forget about subtle silk ribbons adorning one’s lapel — at the 2024 Grammys, Montana Tucker wanted to make sure her yellow ribbon captured everyone’s attention.
The singer/songwriter and social-media star — with 9 million followers on TikTok and 3.1 million followers on Instagram — arrived at the Grammy Awards at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena wearing a nude corset gown that featured an oversized yellow ribbon on the gown’s front, emblazoned with the message, “Bring Them Home.”
This awards season, yellow ribbons were first seen at the 2024 Golden Globes on Jan. 7 as a sign of support for the hostages still being held in captivity by Hamas since the terrorist organization attacked Israel on Oct. 7. Stars who wore the yellow ribbons at the Globes included Succession‘s J. Smith-Cameron and American Fiction‘s John Ortiz.

Having worked on TV shows like Watchmen and The Good Place, Cord Jefferson makes his directorial debut with this feature adaption of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel, Erasure. American Fiction follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), a writer who is irritated at how the publishing world rejected his latest work for not being “black enough.” Monk pours those frustrations into a novel satirising the tropes that black writers are expected to adhere to, although he is surprised at how well-received the book becomes.
What Jefferson has crafted is a witty piece of social commentary that approaches the treatment of black stories in ways that are thoughtful and entertaining. The frustration is felt at how the stories most valued are the ones pandering to tired stereotypes,...

The Mothership, a Halle Berry sci-fi film, was scrapped due to “lots of production issues” according to Netflix boss Bela Bajaria.
Update: Just a little more detail on the scrapping of the Netflix sci-fi flick, The Mothership. Yesterday, The Wrap published a report with some quotes from Netflix content boss Bela Bajaria about the matter, but that report was suddenly taken down.
Since then, The Hollywood Reporter has put up its own report, which offers a bit more context. Bajaria made the comments at the streaming giant’s press event, Next on Netflix, in which it also unveiled its slate of upcoming films and shows. Squid Game season two, Beverly Hills Cop, that sort of thing.
In a brief snippet dedicated to The Mothership, THR quotes Bajaria as saying the film was scrapped due to “lots of production issues and story issues.”

Netflix just unveiled the line-up of films they’ll be releasing in 2024, and missing from that list is the Halle Berry sci-fi movie The Mothership – which, as we reported last week, Netflix has decided not to release at all. At the time, their decision to scrap the movie was reminiscent of Warner Bros. scrapping the films Coyote vs. Acme, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt (as well as a couple other Scooby-Doo projects). But, while at a media event yesterday, Bela Bajaria, who is currently serving as chief of Netflix’s film division, said the producers of The Mothership agreed with Netflix that the movie shouldn’t be released. This is different from what goes on at Warner Bros., where filmmakers are shocked and upset to hear their work is being tossed in the trash.

Back in 2021, a Netflix production called The Mothership was filmed with Halle Berry in the lead role and Bridge of Spies writer Matthew Charman at the helm, making his feature directorial debut. Unfortunately, there have been “multiple delays in post-production” for unspecified reasons… and now Variety has confirmed that Netflix has made the decision to scrap the film instead of completing post-production.
Most people thought it was a questionable move when Warner Bros. decided to scrap the films Coyote vs. Acme, Batgirl, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt for the purpose of tax write-offs, but apparently Netflix thought it was a good idea, since they’ve decided to do the same thing with this project.
If we had the chance to watch The Mothership, we would have found that the story of the sci-fi movie took place one year after the husband of Berry’s character mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm.

Halle Berry‘s movie The Mothership is sadly not going to see the light of day!
It was just revealed that the sci-fi adventure movie has been scrapped by Netflix, over a year after it finished filming.
Halle was set to star as Sara Morse in the film, and she was serving as an executive producer.

Filming on the movie started in July 2021 and wrapped later that year. Now, Variety reports that post-production delays have contributed to the cancelation of the movie.

In a surprising development, Netflix will no longer be releasing Halle Berry’s sci-fi movie The Mothership, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Berry and the Mothership team already completed much of the filming on the project, but it was in need of extensive reshoots to get it over the finish line. Netflix opted not to move forward with those reshoots and shelved the film instead. The InSneider newsletter first reported the news.
The sci-fi film starred Berry as a woman who discovers an extraterrestrial object under her home one year after the disappearance of her husband. Matthew Charman (Bridge of Spies) wrote and directed The Mothership as his feature directorial debut. The ensemble cast included Molly Parker, John Ortiz and Omari Hardwick.

Netflix is being accused of “Batgirling” Halle Berry’s sci-fi The Mothership after reports that the streamer has scrapped the film.
Halle Berry was due to star in The Mothership, a sci-fi thriller backed by Netflix. The film, directed by Matt Charman, was due to be released in 2023 but didn’t see the light of day – and now it looks as though it never will.
According to Jeff Sneider’s newsletter, Netflix has scrapped the release altogether in favour of a tax write-off.
Does that sound familiar? Warner Bros. Discovery recently came under fire for shelving the already completed Batgirl, while Coyote Vs. Acme is currently trying to find a studio to release the film.
Sneider cited trouble with a lengthy post-production schedule and “significant reshoots” as part of the reason Netflix have decided to abandon ship.
Molly Parker, Omari Hardwick, Sydney Lemmon, John Ortiz, and Paul Guilfoyle were also due to star alongside Berry.

Michael Rapaport excoriated Hollywood for what he perceived to be total silence on the hostages being held by Hamas at the Golden Globes on Sunday.
The actor, who has been vocal in raising awareness about the hostages who were taken during the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel, took to social media Tuesday, posting a video slamming the Globes attendees for not talking about the issue. “I’m embarrassed that not one person said one thing, unless I’m mistaken, at the Golden Globes the other night, about the 133 hostages that were kidnapped in broad daylight from Israel on October 7th,” said Rapaport.

Red carpets may be a chance to talk up current projects while wearing high-wattage fashion, but they’re also an opportunity for stars to express their support for vital issues — that’s why viewers of Sunday’s 2024 Golden Globe Awards are seeing some attendees wearing yellow ribbons at tonight’s ceremony.
J. Smith-Cameron of Succession and John Ortiz of American Fiction are among the stars who have arrived sporting a yellow ribbon to show support for the roughly 130 hostages who are still being held in captivity by Hamas since the terrorist organization attacked Israel on Oct. 7. The symbolic effort was organized by Bring Them Home, an Israeli hostage advocacy organization that has been working behind the scenes to supply the ribbons, and is being coordinated by Ashlee Margolis, founder of Beverly Hills-based branding agency The A List. While the Israeli hostages are the main focus of the effort, the hostages reportedly represent 30 nationalities.

In the smart, hilarious comedy/drama American Fiction, college professor/author Thelonious Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), called “Monk” by family and friends, is frustrated when a publisher turns down his latest novel for not being a “Black novel.” “I’m Black, and I wrote it, it’s a Black novel,” the author complains to his agent Arthur (John Ortiz). “Your books are good,” the agent tells him, “they’re just not popular.” It seems his books just don’t fit audiences’ preconceived notions of what a Black novel should be – gritty, urban, struggling, violent perhaps. At a literary conference, Ellison hears author Sintara Golden (Issa Rae), a Black academic like himself,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with writer-director Cord Jefferson’s feature film debut American Fiction.
Adapted from Percival Everett’s 2021 novel Erasure, American Fiction emerges as a hard-hitting commentary on identity, storytelling and the microaggressive terrains of the publishing industry. With a powerhouse ensemble led by Jeffrey Wright and supported by Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, John Ortiz, Leslie Uggams and Adam Brody along with Sterling K. Brown and Issa Rae, the film aims to deconstruct that world as it relates to myriad facets of Black lives.
It centers on Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart...

Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
Today, for the final episode of 2023 (!), we’re talking to director-writer Cord Jefferson and producer Jermaine Johnson about their latest project American Fiction, which won the TIFF Audience Award. The film stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander and John Ortiz.
American Fiction follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), a respected author and professor of English literature. But his impatience with his students’ cultural sensitivities is threatening his academic standing, while his latest novel is failing to attract publishers; they claim Monk’s writing “isn’t Black enough.” One night, in a fit of spite, Monk concocts a pseudonymous novel embodying every Black cliché he can imagine. His agent submits it to a major publisher who immediately offers the biggest advance Monk’s ever seen.

The comedy drama American Fiction won the People’s Choice Award when it was screened at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the film an 8/10 review (you can read it Here), calling it “one of the year’s most sophisticated satires, albeit one with a big heart and an empathetic core.” Now American Fiction has received a recommendation from one of the most popular authors of all time, Stephen King.
King took to his X account to say, “American Fiction is just terrific. So warmhearted and giving that you hardly notice the sharp teeth of its satire. Leslie Uggams stole my heart. Any movie that starts with the title of a Flannery O’Connor story that can no longer be uttered has me in its corner right away.“

American Fiction Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown
Director: Cord Jefferson
American Fiction Movie Review Out ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: The premise of a black writer pretending to be a “blacker” author is knowingly amusing for societal satire. Jeffrey Wright is also a lot of fun to watch in a film where he’s as amusing for his stuffy nature of writing as he is for his more sincere moments of charm with family and friends. The dialogue is also wickedly smart and packs in some great laughs for the absurdity of the scenario.
What’s Bad: The film settles too easily on trying to find a resolution for the premise, turning the concept around on the audience with a meta-resolution of ambiguity. The white liberal characters who consume Monk’s...

Whip-smart and blisteringly funny, American Fiction is a late-in-the-year treat. Not only does it give Jeffrey Wright one of the best roles of his storied career, but it also announces a new cinematic voice in writer/director Cord Jefferson.
Wright stars as Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, an English professor and a writer of critically acclaimed but low-selling book. Monk’s in a bad place at the beginning of the film; he’s on leave from his job after berating a student, and his latest book is being rejected by publishers as not being “Black enough.” This rightfully bothers Ellison, because he’s writing books based on his own experiences, and yet he has to watch as white publishers flock to stories of the “authentic Black experience,” which only exploit misery and further stereotypes. When Monk suffers one too many setbacks, he lashes out in the way only a writer can – by writing his own exploitative,...

Erika Alexander got her start as a teen on “The Cosby Show” before assuming the breakout role of attorney Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.” But it’s her latest performance in “American Fiction,” a satire that critiques our culture’s obsession with stereotypes, that’s put her in a conversation she’s never been in before — that of awards season contender.
Alexander plays Coraline, the love interest of Jeffrey Wright’s Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a cantankerous author who challenges the industry’s perceptions of “Black entertainment.” On Dec. 5, just hours before sitting down with Variety, Alexander learned she’d been nominated in the supporting category at the Independent Spirit Awards; she attended last year’s ceremony as a guest.
“I got dropped off on the highway and walked, scooting around the Porta-Potties,” she says, laughing brightly to keep her emotions about the moment at bay. They seep in anyway.
