Andrew Haigh’s touching new drama All Of Us Strangers was the big winner at the 2023 British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
As the calendar year draws to a close, we’re also inching close toward the season that will see multiple prestigious awards bodies, in theory, hand the best films of the year a golden statuette. The season kicked off with the British Independent Film Awards, also known as BIFA 2023, which were held in London on the 3rd of December.
Lolly Adefope and Kiell Smith-Bynoe hosted the event which celebrated British cinema, especially the slightly lesser-seen films with budgets far smaller than that of Oppenheimer. There were some terrific films nominated this year, and the roster of winners was as surprising as it was satisfying.
Andrew Haigh’s All Of Us Strangers was the biggest winner of the night, taking home a total of four awards plus three previously announced ones.

Steve McQueen seeps into an old world for a new feature.
McQueen’s whopping four-hour long documentary “Occupied City” charts a five-year period from 1940 to 1945 during World War II in Amsterdam. Based on historian and filmmaker Bianca Stigter’s “Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945),” the documentary uses archival footage that McQueen spent three years collecting.
The official synopsis reads: The past collides with our precarious present in Steve McQueen’s bravura documentary Occupied City, informed by the book “Atlas of an Occupied City (Amsterdam 1940-1945),” written by Bianca Stigter. McQueen creates two interlocking portraits: a door-to-door excavation of the Nazi occupation that still haunts his adopted city, and a vivid journey through the last years of pandemic and protest. What emerges is both devastating and life-affirming, an expansive meditation on memory, time, and where we’re headed.
Melanie Hyams narrates the A24 and New Regency film, which debuted at Cannes.

Super Ltd has acquired North American rights to Bianca Stigter’s Three Minutes — A Lengthening, a Holocaust documentary co-produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and narrated by Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown). The doc will be released in theaters next year.
Stigter’s first feature-length doc centers on a three-minute home movie shot by David Kurtz on a European holiday in 1938, in a Jewish town in Poland. The amateur footage— discovered by Kurtz’s grandson, writer Glenn Kurtz, in his parents’ Florida home—captures the Jewish inhabitants of Nasielsk just one year before the Nazis invaded. Most were eventually killed in the Treblinka extermination camp.
Family Affairs Films’ Floor Onrust produced Stigter’s meditation on history and memory with Lammas Park, with the support of The Netherlands Film Fund and Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
The film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival...

Austrian documentary sales specialist Autlook has acquired world rights to Three Minutes - A Lengthening, a new feature documentary by leading Dutch director, producer, director and cultural critic, Bianca Stigter.
Three Minutes – A Lengthening is based around a home movie shot by David Kurtz with a 16mm camera in a Jewish town in Poland in 1938 and poses the questions: can a film of three minutes last for over an hour? Stigter examines these three minutes of film, to unravel the stories hidden in the celluloid, narrated by actress Helena Bonham Carter.

The sixth edition of Producers Lab Toronto is set to launch during the Toronto International Film Festival from September 9 to 12, 2015. Twenty four producers from Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have been chosen to exchange project ideas, funding information, and co-production deals. This successful networking platform has facilitated the development of several trans-Atlantic co-productions, with 17 former participants now working on 17 projects at various stages of production.
Producers Lab Toronto 2015 will see the 24 participants taking part in various networking and pitching events, case studies, and round tables with key industry members. The event will enable the participants to broaden their scope of projects regarding financing, creativity, and distribution in order to create trans-Atlantic co-productions.

Selected by the event's five partners, the participating producers have significant experience of co-production and will be presenting new projects with international market potential. Adis Dapo, known for Aida Begic’s "Children of Sarajevo" (Bosnia and Herzegovina/Germany/ France/ Turkey 2012), is from Efp’s youngest member country Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is one of the ten European internationally-experienced producers coming to take part in the event.
Canadian producer participants include Simone Urdl, known for her long association with Atom Egoyan ("The Captive," Cannes 2014), and Chantelle Kadyschuk of No Trace Camping, Canadian producer of "Room," a Canada-Ireland co-production premiering at Tiff 2015.

Exclusive: Mongrel International has added a late addition to its Toronto slate in the form of History’s Future from installations artist Fiona Tan.
The Family Affair Films and Rohfilm project is a part-fiction, part-documentary essay about the world and stars Mark O’Halloran, Denis Lavant and Anne Consigny
History’s Future focuses on a man as he embarks on a trans-European voyage after losing his memory in a violent assault and ultimately learns how to survive contemporary life.
The project is currently shooting in various European locations and the producers have earmarked a September 15 end of principal photography.
“We are thrilled that the producers have entrusted us the sales of History’s Future,” said Mongrel International president Charlotte Mickie. “Fiona Tan is a very impressive artist and promises to be an equally impressive feature filmmaker. Her themes of identity, dislocation and connectedness are both urgent and affecting.”
