David Fincher has checked the pulse of “Mindhunter” and confirms its dead, gone, and buried.
Fincher, who executive produced the series and helmed seven episodes, confirmed that the serial killer-centric show was ultimately too costly for Netflix.
“I’m very proud of the first two seasons, but it’s a particularly expensive series and, in the eyes of Netflix, we haven’t attracted a large enough audience to justify such an investment,” Fincher told Le Journal du Dimanche. “I don’t blame them, they took risks to launch the series.”
“Mindhunter” premiered in 2017 with Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany playing two FBI agents who set up a unit to begin the practice of criminal profiling in the 1970s. The series was based on the 1995 book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit,” written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.

Gather round, Mindhunter fans, because author John Douglas is releasing a brand-new book with writer and filmmaker Mark Olshaker based on Douglas's career spent interviewing violent offenders for the FBI. One of the first criminal profilers and a true pioneer in the behavioral-science method of law enforcement, Douglas has interviewed murderers like Charles Manson, Ed Kemper, and David Berkowitz. His latest book, A Killer's Shadow, details the complicated case of serial killer and bank robber Joseph Paul Franklin, a white supremacist who is suspected of murdering more than 20 people in the 1970s and '80s.
A high-priority case for the FBI, Franklin targeted Black and Jewish citizens as well as interracial couples during his violent spree. He roamed around the country and often shot his victims with a long-range rifle, and confessed to wounding civil rights leader Vernon Jordan and shooting well-known magazine publisher Larry Flynt. His transient tendencies made...

All signs pointed to true crime drama Mindhunter being donezo at Netflix. The second season came and went last August with nary a world about a third season. Then Netflix went ahead and confirmed that the show was in a holding (not Holden) pattern with all the actors released from their contracts.
Now, the most authoritative source of them all, director David Fincer, has confirmed what we pretty much already knew. There will be no more seasons of Mindhunter, at least not for the foreseeable future.
In an interview with Vulture to promote Fincher’s upcoming film Mank, the director broke the news of Mindhunter’s de facto cancellation.
“Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show,” Fincher told Vulture. “We talked about ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it...

Don’t be looking for a third season of Mindhunter anytime soon. There has been speculation about a possible renewal for Netflix’s crime thriller drama since January when options on the show’s leads, Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv, had expired and the show was put on “indefinite hold.” Now, executive producer David Fincher confirms that a third season of the show is off the radar at Netflix – at least for now.
In an interview with Vulture, Fincher said at the beginning of season 2 he “ended up looking at what was written and deciding I didn’t like any of it, so we tossed it and started over.” He then promoted Ad Courtenay Miles to co-showrun, but “It’s a 90-hour workweek,” Fincher said. “It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I...

“Mindhunter” is going on ice at Netflix.
Variety has confirmed that the show’s cast members have been released from their contracts. The streamer is not ruling out a third season of the series, however, depending on executive producer David Fincher’s schedule.
Fincher is currently working on directing the Netflix film “Mank” as well as executive producing the second season of “Love, Death, and Robots.” It was also recently announced that Fincher is working on a “Chinatown” prequel series with Robert Towne, who wrote the original film.
“Mank” is biopic of screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, perhaps best known for his work on the Oscar-winning screenplay of “Citizen Kane.” Gary Oldman is attached to star along with Lily Collins, Amanda Seyfried, and Tuppence Middleton.

Mindhunter season 3 has been put on indefinite hold while David Fincher works on his passion projects.
Mindhunter season 3 is now looking more unlikely, as Netflix has confirmed this week that the main cast have been released from their contracts and allowed to pursue other roles.
“David [Fincher] is focused on directing his first Netflix film Mank and on producing the second season of Love, Death and Robots,” a Netflix spokesperson said in a statement about the decision. “He may revisit Mindhunter again in the future, but in the meantime felt it wasn’t fair to the actors to hold them from seeking other work while he was exploring new work of his own.”
Stars Holt McCallany, Jonathan Groff, and Anna Torv are now free to work on whatever they please, and will not be tied into a third season of the serial killer thriller series.

It’s been five months since Season 2 of Mindhunter launched on Netflix. Over that time, there has been no movement on part of the streamer regarding a potential third season of the David Fincher crime thriller drama. Last month, Netflix let the options of the cast, led by stars Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff, lapse, further raising the possibility that we may have seen the last of Mindhunter.
That is not entirely the case, the network told Deadline while confirming that the options on the cast, which includes co-star Anna Torv, have expired.

After the first season of Mindhunter dropped on Netflix in October 2017, we had to wait nearly two years until we got a second season in August 2019. Unfortunately, it seems like this '70s-set serial killer drama is going to leave us hanging once again before debuting a third season. Actor Jonathan Groff, who stars as brooding FBI agent Holden Ford, revealed in a November 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the third season is "on hold" as Mindhunter producer David Fincher concentrates on a biopic about Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz. The movie, which will be called Mank, is Fincher's latest project for Netflix and his first movie since 2014's Gone Girl.
To be fair, Mindhunter hasn't even technically been renewed for a third season yet, though the series was originally made with a five-season plan in mind. Plans change, of course - Groff's costar Holt McCallany, who plays Bill Tench,...

Netflix This season sees Agents Ford and Tench in Georgia to consult on the investigation into the Atlanta child murders, and to implement their research findings on ground. The new season of Netflix’s hit series “Mindhunter” dropped Aug. 16, and this year the series finds FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) taking on the Atlanta child murders, which unfolded between 1979 and 1981, with 28 African Americans slaughtered in Georgia. No one has ever been charged for the murders.
According to a new feature in the Los Angeles Times, Netflix has confirmed that the “Mindhunter” team did not consult the families of the victims in the killings, two of whom feature prominently in the season — Camille Bell, the mother of nine-year-old Yusuf Bell, who was found dead in 1979, and Venus Taylor, the mother of 12-year-old Angel Lenair, who was found dead in 1980. The investigation is currently being reopened, and with the new attention the issues of racial injustice inherent to the case are coming to the forefront.

Mindhunter is based on the true crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker, and it chronicles the beginning of serial killer profiling in the FBI.
The story is set in the year 1977, “in the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at the...

Leave it to TV writers to come up with the best plot twists at the Emmys. The writers branch of the TV academy has given surprise nominations to underdog shows over the years that otherwise struggled to get on the radar, including “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “The Wire” and “Community,” among others.
Will the writing categories take us by surprise again once nominations are announced on July 12? Here are two dark horse contenders for Best Drama Writing I think we should watch out for this year:
“Mindhunter” for “Episode 10,” written by Joe Penhall and Jennifer Haley
This episode, in which the show’s team of criminal profilers start to crack under pressure from an in-house FBI review, might be more likely to receive a directing nomination for David Fincher given his notoriety. He’s an Oscar nominee (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Social Network”) and...

Taking on the role of Edmund Kemper, a real-life serial killer who murdered 10 people from the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, pushed Cameron Britton’s career from occasional guest star status to captivating supporting player. In the Netflix drama that Joe Penhall adapted from John Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s book, Britton’s scenes were mostly confined to small interrogation rooms as detectives interviewed him about his crimes in order to learn the inner workings of a killer’s mind. Britton calls the experience, which also included working with prolific director David Fincher, an “almost spiritual” one. “Episode 2” was the first time the audience got a glimpse at Britton’s take on Kemper, becoming both captivated by his affectations and perhaps concerned by how closely they were connecting with a killer.

David Fincher and Joe Penhall's Mindhunter is one of my favorite series of the year so far and I'm excited to report that it has been renewed for a second season!
Netflix made the announcement on the show's official Twitter account with a video that you can watch below. Mindhunter was such an intense series and the ending really left me hanging, so I'm so happy that the story of these characters will continue with Season 2.
The series has an amazingly talented cast that includes Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, Anna Torv, Hannah Gross, and newcomer Cameron Britton, who amazingly portrays serial killer Ed Kemper.
The series is an adaptation of the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." It's set in the 1970s and explores the early days of criminal psychology and profiling as two FBI agents...

I'm currently in the middle of watching David Fincher's Netflix series Mindhunter and it's one hell of a great show and absolutely fascinating. The story follows a couple of FBI agents in 1977 who are studying the minds of serial killers so that they help catch them faster because, “How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks?”
The series is based on the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas‘ called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." Even though it's a mostly fictionalized series, it is inspired by real-life events.
Thanks to series composer Jason Hill, we've learned what Season 2 is going to focus on. While talking to Billboard, he revealed that the second season will examine the Atlanta child murders. If you're not familiar with this tragic event it was a string of 28 murders, mostly children and adolescents,...

The first season of Mindhunter is peppered with tiny peeks at the life of a burgeoning serial killer, but who is it?
This article contains spoilers for the first season of Mindhunter, and Zodiac.
See related The Snowman review
It’s as though director and executive producer David Fincher posed us a very simple question: “what do you want?” And we replied “10 hours of Zodiac, please.” To which, in his wisdom, he cheerfully responded “say no more fam.”
Yes, 70s-set binge-fodder Mindhunter arrived on Netflix this past Friday and ended up monopolising our entire weekend – bums were not leaving sofas until we’d chained all 10 episodes of the relentlessly creepy (and unexpectedly funny) FBI drama, based on the legendary book Mind Hunter: Inside The FBI's Elite Serial Crime Unit, by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.
After the final credits rolled, we were left with a few tantalising threads still dangling.

David Fincher is returning to Netflix with his new serial killer drama “Mindhunter,” in which he executive produces and directs, but he has stayed completely quiet in the weeks leading up to the show’s debut. Fincher won’t be making the press rounds so heavily, so consider his new interview with Charlie Rose a rare gift. The director joined lead actors Holt McCallany and Jonathan Groff on the CBS News program to discuss “Mindhunter,” which he says is sort of the anti-“Zodiac.”
“Mindhunter” is based on Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas’ true crime book “Mind Hunter: Inside The FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit.” The series is set in 1979 at the onset of the FBI’s interest in criminal psychology and criminal profiling and follows two detectives who interview convicted serial killers in order to apply their rationale to ongoing murder cases. Think “Criminal Minds” with a David Fincher twist.

“What’s the worst he can do?”
That’s the question posed in today’s all-new teaser for Mindhunter, Netflix and David Fincher’s serial killer drama due to premiere on October 13th. Adapted from the pages of John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s Mind Hunter: Inside FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, this promo finds one of the show’s two FBI agents walking into a holding cell to interview a convicted murderer – a convicted murderer who just so happens to be 6’9″ and a mighty 300 pounds. Suddenly that firearm looks like a child’s toy.
Set in 1979, Mindhunter stars Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallanay (Sully), Anna Torv, and Hannah Gross, and above you’ll be able to get a taste of the interplay between Groff and McCallany’s respective detectives. Their mission involves going face-to-face with imprisoned serial killers to identify their thought process and, essentially, what makes them tick.

Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for David Fincher's upcoming series Mindhunter. The series is set in 1979 and it follows two FBI agents, Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), who are trying to understand the mindset of serial killers.
In this teaser, right before Holden goes to meet with a serial killer, Bill scares the shit out of him when telling him what will happen if he brings a gun into the room with him when meeting with the killer. He tells him that the killer will take the gun, kill him, and then have sex with his face. It's a very dark kind of humor, which is something that Fincher is great at.
The series is an adaptation of the 1996 nonfiction novel by Mark Olshaker and John Douglas‘ called "Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit." I've provided a description of that book below the teaser.

“Mindhunter” is nothing like “House of Cards.”
“Mindhunter,” adapted from a novel by Mark Olshaker and John E. Douglas, is set in 1979 and follows two FBI agents, played by Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, who are tasked with understanding the fractured psyches of serial killers in order to crack existing investigations and prevent future murders.
“House of Cards,” adapted from a British TV series by Andrew Davies, is set in the modern day and follows two married politicians, played by Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, whose quest for power in Washington D.C. takes them to unexpected extremes.
Save for David Fincher’s involvement and their distribution platform, the trailer for “Mindhunter” doesn’t look anything like “House of Cards.”
Except, of course, it does: It looks exactly like “House of Cards” — literally. The sharp, clean contrast; the blue and gray color palette; the shadows and silhouettes. “Mindhunter” looks like “House of Cards...

Late last year, we learned that David Fincher and Charlize Theron were teaming up for a Netflix series called Mindhunter. Fincher has cast Holt McCallany (Lights Out) in the lead role; the actor previously worked with Fincher on films such as Alien 3 and Fight Club.
Mindhunter is based on the 1996 book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by former special agent John Douglas and Mark Olshaker. It offers the behind the scenes story of some of Douglas’ highest-profile cases, which includes the man who hunted prostitutes in Alaska, a child murderer in Atlanta, and Seattle’s Green River killer.
According to Deadline, the series will be set in 1979, and that “centers on the inquisitive and skilled FBI Agent Bill Tench (McCallany). Along with fellow serial killer investigator in the behavioral science unit, FBI agent Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff), Tench interviews serial killers to help them solve current murders.
