Tomo Hyakutake is a master of the horrific. For more than two decades, he has been working as special makeup effects artist, moldmaker, model designer, model marker, mask creator, for movies, music videos and commercials, having dozens of credits to his names, while also retaining a gallery with his own work.
We speak with him about his art and his creative procedure, working in movies, his cooperation with the likes of Takashi Miike, Takashi Shimizu, Hideaki Anno and many more, the art and movie scene in Japan and many other topics.
How did your interest in art, and particularly the art of the horrific, begin?
When I was a student, Screaming Mad George and Kazu Hiro were my professors at the university. I also learned a lot from my respected seniors, Yasushi Nirasawa, Takayuki Takeya, and Steve Wang. After graduating from school, they introduced me to the industry. In terms of Art-horror,...

Japan's Madhouse animation studios assembled a crack team of contributors for their new project Hell's Angels and just by looking at the new trailer that dropped you can see that it's truly a match made in creativity heaven. Check this out: Yoshiki Yamakawa who previously drew a manga version of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi directed it, Yasushi Nirazawa who's designed creatures for Hellboy did the creatures, while Kazita Nakagawa, who's worked with Shinichiro Watanabe on Smaurai Champloo designed the characters. Cool team up no?
So what's it all about? Well at this point I'm only aware that it's a "dark comedy horror" but if you can read Japanese please go to the offical site and fill us in! Trailer after the break.

Now this, boys and girls, is how you assemble a cast of talent.
Over the past few years Japan’s Madhouse animation studio has gone from being a fairly run of the mill work farm, turning out solid but unspectacular work, into being arguably the nation’s top production house, a home to auteurs, populist masters an technical geniuses alike. How have they done it? Simply put by having a sterling eye for young talent and the wisdom to allow more established hands like Paprika‘s Satoshi Kon and Kemonozume‘s Masaki Yuasa a free hand to do what they want. Madhouse may not have an exclusive hold at the top of the heap but, particularly when it comes to television animation, they absolutely must be a starting point for any serious conversation of what’s important and interesting in the anime world right now.
And Hell’s Angels is their latest.
