The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

Pixar has won Best Animated Feature at the Oscars seven times out of nine tries. One of its only two losses was in the category's inaugural year when "Monsters Inc." was beaten by "Shrek" in 2001. This year its prequel, "Monsters University," could redeem the franchise, but director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae look at the Oscar buzz as reward for a group effort. "Mostly it's recognition of the entire crew and the work that the team did," says Rae of potential Oscar recognition. "We had a really amazing, exceptional crew … they went above and beyond." They single out a number of their creative collaborators for praise, including production designer Ricky Nierva. I wrote last year about whether production designers for animation are unfairly shortchanged when it comes to awards recognition, and they agree. Rae explains of the design process, "We have to build it from absolute ...

Cinelinx is at P. Sherman's at 42 Wallaby Way in Sydney watching the outstanding new Finding Nemo Collector's Edition Blu-ray!
The Set-up
A clownfish named Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) goes on a desperate search for his son Nemo (voice of Alexander Gould) when he is taken from the ocean by a human to become a pet. A fish named Dory (voice of Ellen Degeneres) aids him on his quest.
Directed by: Andrew Stanton
The Delivery
An absolute instant classic upon its release in 2003, Finding Nemo charmed audiences with the perfect balance of heart and laughs. The film manages to move from one visual gag to the next with ease, with a number of dramatic points mixed in. The tone is just right, and even when it gets silly or sad, the underlying theme of a love between father and son keeps the film emotionally grounded and moving in the right direction.

[1] Walt Disney Studios has announced the title for Pixar's Holiday 2013 movie -- Frozen. I'm kind of surprised that the MPAA approved the title considering there was a popular indie movie released under the same title only two years ago, Adam Green's horror thriller Frozen. When the project was first announced at the D23 Expo, they revealed a joke working title (complete with logo seen above): "The Untitled Pixar Movie About Dinosaurs". More details after the jump. Previously: Here is the official plot synopsis from Disney: What if that life-changing asteroid missed Earth? Director Bob Peterson’s hilarious tale depicts a world where dinosaurs never went extinct. And here is a bit of information on the filmmakers behind the movie: Bob Peterson started at Pixar as an additional animator and layout artist on Toy Story, and worked on the story team for A Bug's Life and Toy Story 2.

At Disney's D23 expo, director Dan Scanlon and animator Ricky Nierva revealed shots from the upcoming "Monsters, Inc" prequel, called "Monsters University," which will focus on Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James Sullivan (John Goodman) during their college days. Scanlon said that fans will get to see more of the monsters' world seen in the first film. "They're going to be outside and they're going to be on campus," he explained. "[They're] going to meet monsters like they've never seen before." It's likely that the monsters will range from professors to geeks to athletes. Scanlon confirmed that Randall Boggs, voiced by Steve Buscemi in the original film, will return as well. There will also be lots of references to college movies from the 80s. "Monsters University" is set to hit theaters on June 13th, 2013, and Pixar is currently focusing on designing younger versions of Mike and Sulley. Check out some shots...

Meet the new and improved Mike and Sulley! Or rather, the younger Mike and Sulley, college-aged buddies attending Monsters University in the prequel to Pixar's Monsters Inc from 2001. Yesterday at Disney's D23 Expo down in Anaheim, Pixar held a panel on the character designs for Monsters University, hosted by director Dan Scanlon and animator Ricky Nierva, that an included an early intro and discussion about designing younger versions of these two characters for the prequel in development now (but it's not due out until June 2013). We snapped some quick photos of the new designs during the panel, take a look below! As confirmed during Disney's big movie presentation yesterday, Monsters University is in development at Pixar, with Billy Crystal and John Goodman returning as Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, plus even Steve Buscemi as Randall. They explained that in designing the college world, where the story will explore ...

Pixar is currently in development on a prequel to Monsters Inc. called Monsters University, which takes Sully and Mike back into their college days. The movie will give us a backstory on these two characters, how they met, and how their relationship formed. The two characters weren't friends right off the bat, in fact they were rivals. There was some very cool stuff revealed this weekend at the 2011 D23 Expo, and thanks to Gt writer Kristal Bailey you can read more about that here.
There was no footage from the film shown, but the designs look great, and the way that director Dan Scanlon and production designer Ricky Nierva talked about the film, it sounds like it will be just as good and fun as the first film.

We knew our old pals Mike and Sulley would look a little skinnier after Pixar confirmed last April that the follow-up to Monsters, Inc. would be a prequel set during the scary pair’s college days.
But not this skinny, of course.
This is merely a concept sketch (with production designer Ricky Nierva and director Dan Scanlon) illustrating the physical contrast between the two — one’s a little circle, one’s a big rectangle.
But Disney’s D23 Expo did bring first looks at how the teenage big, blue monster and his eyeball-with-legs buddy will look in the Monsters University,...

In recent years, Comic-Con has been criticized for becoming too Hollywood as all the major studios would come down to San Diego and woo fans with their upcoming projects. This year, Disney -- which owns both Marvel and Pixar -- didn't have a big presence [1] there. Most surmised that was because Disney has its own version of Comic-Con, The D23 Expo, a few weeks later. That was confirmed a few weeks ago [2] and now we have details on specifically which movies Disney will have on hand at D23, which takes place in Anaheim, CA from August 19-21. And if you thought Comic-Con was being invaded by movies, you ain't seen nothing yet. Confirmed films to have a presence at D23 are as follows: The Muppets, John Carter, Brave, The Avengers, Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Wreck-It Ralph, and Monsters University. With Disney's big D23 event coming up later this month, they've now released a bunch of information on the event (who will be there, what's going to be talked about, and what to expect from the Expo).
All in all, it's about what you expected. There's going to be tons of stuff from Pixar (which is always great) and of course there is mention of The Avengers. I'm actually really hoping that we'll get more of a full teaser from The Avengers at this event. Remember, Avengers didn't have a big showing at Sdcc because Disney was saving it for D23, so hopefully there will be plenty of "Wow" moments from that film here. Anyway, here's the full release with all the info on what's going on this year:

Pixar's Up opened Cannes last week and is due in theaters next Friday. The New York Times sat down with director Pete Docter and production designer Ricky Nierva to talk about the movie's four central characters. These include the 78-year-old curmudgeon Carl Frederickson and Russell, the intrepid explorer 70 years Carl's junior who leads him on an adventure. Docter said:
Russell is like a whirling dervish. He's spinning and moving, so we designed him more like a top or a balloon. He's got multiple levels of clothing on top of each other. All of this is researched down to the detail about what weave of the cloth it is. Nierva spoke about how his team used simple shapes to reflect character. Since Carl is so stubborn, for example, he was represented with very square features:
The shape symbolism is present in the photo frames within this shot to tell a snapshot story of Carl's life.
