The inspiration behind Pixar’s first made-for-Imax movie, “Lightyear,” actually originated with 2011’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” The look of “Lightyear,” which imagines the movie that inspired the space-age toy that Andy (and now Bonnie) love so dearly in Pixar’s beloved “Toy Story” franchise, is something of a throwback. Its design aesthetic is intentionally chunky — co-writer and director Angus MacLane told TheWrap that the movie could have been made in the late 1970s or early 1980s and that he was inspired as much by consumer electronics from the time as well as movies like “The Black Hole” or “Alien.” But the film’s presentation, which includes specially designed footage for Imax, drew inspiration from elsewhere: Tom Cruise’s live-action blockbuster 2011 “Mission: Impossible” sequel “Ghost Protocol.” So while most Pixar movies are big, “Lightyear” is going to be really big. Your mission, should you choose to accept it MacLane originated the idea to use Imax,...

The Movie Pool takes a long look at the short films of Pixar from their new Blu-ray!
The Set-up
Short films from Pixar, many featuring characters from the studio's feature fims, are presented.
The Delivery
This second collection of short films from Pixar features 12 cartoons in stunning high definition. Many of the shorts were previously available on Pixar home video releases (including "Hawaiian Vacation" and "Air Mater"), and three are Academy Award nominees.
What we get in Volume 2 of the series is an eclectic mix of styles and approaches, and for the most part, it all works well. While some are mildly amusing, others (like "Day and Night") are exceptional, that entertain and manage to be original.
The shorts included in the collection are:
"Your Friend the Rat" Ratatouille's Remy and Emile provide the disgusting yet funny history of rats. Director Jim Capobianco and production designer Nate Wragg provide an optional audio commentary.

1.) While recent news confirmed the Safety Not Guaranteed creative team of Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly to be working on a remake of Flight of the Navigator for Disney, Connolly has also been working on a project for Pixar for almost a year. While we know nothing of a plot or even a title, we do know the director is Teddy Newton, who directed Day and Night, the short that played before Toy Story 3. Pixar projects take longer to see the light of day than most movies, so we probably won't see this mystery project for another 5 years. Still, it's reassuring to know that despite that whole Brave fiasco, the Pixar higher-ups have told Connolly "not to dumb it down or treat animation like it's for kids." Variety 2.) Nick Hornby, the writer of books like High Fidelity and About a Boy, as well as the screenplay for An Education,...

Pixar, already stacked with a schedule equal parts mysterious and exciting, has added another project from Pixar first-timer Derek Connolly, the screenwriter behind the Mark Duplass/Aubrey Plaza indie Safety Not Guaranteed. "You’re here everyday. You don’t go away for three months and come up with a script," Connolly says of Pixar. "You’re involved with a director and it’s very collaborative." Directing the untitled project will be Pixar's Teddy Newton, who got an Oscar nomination for his 2010 short Day & Night but has yet to tackle a feature.

The Safety Not Guaranteed writing and directing duo of Derek Connolly and Colin Trevorrow have already lined up a remake of Flight of the Navigator at Disney, but the screenwriting half has already been spending some time with one of the Mouse House's most treasured banners. Variety recently did a profile on Connolly and revealed that he's writing some sot of mystery project for Pixar Animation with Teddy Newton, the director of the stellar short Day & Night, attached to direct the film. In fact, Connolly has been working on the film almost this entire year after Safety Not Guaranteed premiered at Sundance in January. As expected, the story is under wraps and we don't even have a title, but Connolly is still hard at work. The writer commented on the Pixar experience, "It's totally different, the way they do things up here. You're here everyday. You don't go away for...

Who would have thought that “Safety Not Guaranteed,” the low budget sci-fi-ish Sundance hit, would produce some of the most sought after creative talent in the business right now? It was a cute movie and there was certainly some artistry at work, but anyone who thought that the film’s director, Colin Trevorrow, would soon be mentioned in the same breath as the upcoming “Star Wars” sequels (and become attached to a highly touted “Flight of the Navigator” remake) is either lying or psychic. Now comes word that Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed” collaborator Derek Connolly (who is also working on ‘Navigator’) has a job almost as vaulted as guiding the future adventures of the Skywalker clan – he’s writing a new movie for Pixar, according to a report in Variety. In a profile of the writer, they let slip that Connolly is working on an untitled, top-secret feature for director Teddy Newton,...

Though Sundance success Safety Not Guaranteed has played well in the Us, we in the UK don’t get to see it until Boxing Day. But the film’s creative team, including director Colin Treverrow and writer Derek Connolly, have been reaping the rewards for months. Treverrow has been courted for several films (and was even rumoured as a possible Star Wars candidate) and Connolly has been working with a little company called Pixar on one of their still-bubbling projects. Though the film he’s writing for Teddy Newton (who directed the short Day And Night) is being kept under wraps by the secrecy-loving Emeryville gang, he’s enthusiastic about the experience so far. "It's totally different, the way they do things up here,” he tells Variety. “You're here everyday. You don't go away for three months and come up with a script. Just one day after it was revealed that he'll be drafting a remake of Flight of the Navigator for Walt Disney Pictures, Variety reveals that Safety Not Guaranteed screenwriter Derek Connolly is working on a film for Disney.Pixar that will be directed by Teddy Newton, the man behind the short film "Day and Night." Details are, at this stage, very few, but Connolly tells the trade that he's been instructed to write as though he's telling a story for adults rather than kids, specifically. Following the June 21, 2013 release of Dan Scanlon's Monsters University , Disney.Pixar's upcoming slate includes Bob Peterson and Peter Sohn's The Good Dinosaur on May 30, 2014, Pete Docter's Untitled Disney.Pixar Inside The Mind Film on June 19, 2015 and the still-undated...

The main reason I was excited to go to Alamo Drafthouse's recent screening of The Incredibles, aside for my love for the movie, was the chance to meet and participate in the Q&A with composer Michael Giacchino (jee-a-kee-no). It was a great experience to listen to Giacchino talk. The Q&A, moderated by Austin composer Brian Satterwhite, happened before the movie, which I really enjoyed. In my opinion, having to wait until the end of the film to talk to the guest is not necessary when the movie is as popular and memorable as The Incredibles.
This was Giacchino's first feature film, before he started composing for video games (the Call Of Duty and Medal of Honor series) and television (Alias and Lost). I would say he hit a home run on his first feature score.
Giacchino told the audience how he came to work on...

The Muppets is in Us cinemas today and we have to wait flippin ages until February 2012 to see it. No, we are Not happy! Another reason that we are not happy is that the short film which will sit in front of The Muppets is a new one from Pixar using Toy Story and has the name Small Fry. We’ve seen a couple of images and a clip already but I think this one might be my favourite as it shows Mini Buzz getting to meet Mini Zurg. I guess if he met normal-sized Zurg it would be an unfair fight!

The Muppets promises to be one of the most fun movie experiences of 2011, and if all the parody teasers, trailers and other related marketing didn’t give us enough reason to rush out and see the film, this bit of news will. Disney film will be screening a brand-new short from Pixar, with the Toy Story franchise’s Buzz Lightyear in the spotlight.
Titled Small Fry, the seven-minute film is written and directed by Angus MacLane, the Pixar animator who previously wrote and directed the Wall-e-related short Burn-e. Apart from Buzz, several other Toy Story charcters will appear in the short, including Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and of course Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks). The other new star of note is Glee’s Jane Lynch, playing the vain support-group leader called Neptuna. The voices of the new mini characters are provided by MacLane himself, but Mini Buzz...

[1] In case you didn't already have enough reasons to go see The Muppets, we present to you one more: Theatrical screenings of the Disney film will be preceded by a brand-new short from Pixar, with the Toy Story franchise's Buzz Lightyear front and center. Titled "Small Fry," the seven-minute film introduces us to a tiny, fast food meal version of Buzz Lightyear (Teddy Newton) yearning for a better life than his current restaurant display case existence. To that end, he decides to kidnap the bigger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) so that they can trade places. In the clip, the Buzz we know and love attempts a daring, space ranger-worthy escape from the fast food play pen -- only to land squarely in the middle of a group therapy session for discarded Fun Meal toys. Jane Lynch lends her vocal talents to Neptuna, a narcissistic plastic mermaid who serves as the leader of the group.

While I am not entirely sure that fans of animation and puppets and joy and wonder and childhood dreams need yet another reason to check out The Muppets when it opens over Thanksgiving weekend, Disney and Pixar are not taking any chances, loading up the fleecy feel-good film of the holidays with an extra gift – a new Pixar short. But it’s not just any new Pixar short, it’s a Toy Story short. Small Fry returns us to a post-Toy Story 3 world, with (spoiler alert if for some horrific reason you’ve yet to see the third film, you cold-hearted bastard) all the toys happily living out a play-filled existence with wee lass Bonnie. Ever equal when it comes to said play time, Small Fry opens with Bonnie and her mom going on a fast food-outing, accompanied by both Buzz and Rex. The new Toy Story short, Small Fry, is set to premiere in a couple weeks in front of The Muppets, and that's the first still from the new Pixar short, above. In Small Fry, Pixar director Teddy Newton voices a miniature version of Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who replaces the full-size one. Some story info is after the break. USA Today [1] offers up the still image and this plot description: A Happy Meal-type toy at a fast-food restaurant yearns to break out of his display case to play like a real toy. He kidnaps Buzz Lightyear in an attempt to take over his play-filled existence. The life-reversal forces the real Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, to deal with a support group for discarded, unloved fast-food toys. Though Buzz doesn't fit into the group, he has trouble exiting. Writer/director Angus MacLane says, It's like the Prince and the Pauper tale for toys.

In recent years, Comic-Con has been criticized for becoming too Hollywood as all the major studios would come down to San Diego and woo fans with their upcoming projects. This year, Disney -- which owns both Marvel and Pixar -- didn't have a big presence [1] there. Most surmised that was because Disney has its own version of Comic-Con, The D23 Expo, a few weeks later. That was confirmed a few weeks ago [2] and now we have details on specifically which movies Disney will have on hand at D23, which takes place in Anaheim, CA from August 19-21. And if you thought Comic-Con was being invaded by movies, you ain't seen nothing yet. Confirmed films to have a presence at D23 are as follows: The Muppets, John Carter, Brave, The Avengers, Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Wreck-It Ralph, and Monsters University. Attendees will also get to see the new,...

With Disney's big D23 event coming up later this month, they've now released a bunch of information on the event (who will be there, what's going to be talked about, and what to expect from the Expo).
All in all, it's about what you expected. There's going to be tons of stuff from Pixar (which is always great) and of course there is mention of The Avengers. I'm actually really hoping that we'll get more of a full teaser from The Avengers at this event. Remember, Avengers didn't have a big showing at Sdcc because Disney was saving it for D23, so hopefully there will be plenty of "Wow" moments from that film here. Anyway, here's the full release with all the info on what's going on this year:

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its annual list of invited new members, and it’s clear they’re continuing to try to make their membership younger. On the list alongside veterans like John Hawkes and David Duchovny are a slew of twentysomethings, including Mia Wasikowska, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Lawrence, and Rooney Mara. The Board of Governors also decided to extend an invitation to Restrepo codirector Tim Hetherington, the first time Academy membership has been bestowed posthumously. As a side note, it’s also a hoot to now say the phrase Oscar voter Russell Brand.

Beverly Hills, CA . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 178 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2011 to the Academy.s roster of members.
.These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,. said Academy President Tom Sherak. .Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks..
The Academy.s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 211 new members in 2011, but as in other recent years, several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
In an unprecedented gesture, the list of new members includes documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington, who was killed in action in Libya in April.

I'm skeptical abour Cars 2. I'm not saying that I think it will be a bad film. I'm just not convinced that the direction Disney and Pixar have taken the franchise is the right one to make this movie the mega hit that Cars wasn't. Cheesy James Bond films aside, the spy movie genre hasn't typically had broad family appeal. Then again, the Disney-Pixar partnership has visited more mature territory in its output before with great success. The Incredibles, which has just been released for the first time on Blu-ray, is definitely not your ordinary family movie. Yet it is one of the collaboration's most revered and popular productions. And rightly so.
The Incredibles was released in theaters in 2004 and proved to be a hit in that realm and on DVD. The story focuses on a group of superheroes who come out of forced retirement to save the world from a wanna-be super villain.

Given how much fun is present in animating super-heroics, it’s interesting to note that feature film makers eschewed delving into the genre. Maybe they were scared off by the iconic Fleischer Studio Superman shorts from the 1940s or were disdainful of the subject matter. We got the first taste of what could be with the wonderful and underrated Iron Giant. It’s little surprise, then, that its director, Brad Bird would produce the first feature animated film to focus on super-heroics with the marvelous Pixar production The Incredibles.
In 115 glorious minutes, Bird and company wonderfully honored the tropes of herodom while telling a strong story about good versus evil and more importantly, about family. Much has been written about the Parr family resembling the Fantastic Four, but the number is about all they have in common. Instead, we’re looking a far better version of No Ordinary Family that...

The Incredibles Quick Thoughts:
When I first saw The Incredibles I liked it, but didn't love it. When I last ranked Pixar's films I placed it at #7, but to say a film is in the bottom five when it comes to Pixar's eleven feature films it's such a fine line from one film to the next it's still not an insult. My biggest issue with the film is a rather slow start compared to the excellent last half. Nevertheless, it's always an enjoyable watch.
Being a superhero film, The Incredibles is the one film in the Pixar stable you would most think would be getting a sequel, but perhaps the fact that it's so obvious is the reason one has never been made. After all, with so many superhero films hitting theaters nowadays would Pixar look like a front-runner or a follower if they added yet another superhero flick to the schedule?...

Since the year 2004 when it was released The Incredibles has been my favorite Pixar film. Now that it is finally hitting blu-ray on April 12th in a high definition 1080p/Avc-encoded presentation and a DTS-hd Master Audio 5.1 Es surround track, the film is even more, well… incredible!
Review:
I just love everything about this film, and like Pixar itself, their blu-ray releases are bar-none the best & chock full of awesomeness. One of the things that stands out to me in this film is the family dynamic, even though they have superpowers they still deal with the same problems all families deal with. The film uses the superhero genre to explore not only the tensions of family life but the male mid-life crisis as well. Each character has their own very well done story arc with powers attributed to how they are personality wise. Intermixed into all this great storytelling are...

Did the Oscars surprise anyone? Sci-Fi fans, we are of course still sore over Christopher Nolan’s snub for Best Director, but Inception still was recognized with four Oscars. Genre highlights from the 83rd Academy Awards also include Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland sweeping away the two coveted design awards in Art Direction and Costume Design and The Wolfman won for Best Makeup. Pixar‘s Toy Story 3 took home Best Animated Film and Best Song.
This Sunday’s broadcast of the 83rd Academy Awards on ABC attempted to reach out to a “younger crowd” with its choice of hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco, but the live broadcast dropped 9% in overall ratings compared to last year’s broadcast and down 12% in the 18-49 adult demographic. Still, the show entertained 37.6 million viewers with a show full of exposition to educate new viewers about the history of past Oscar winners.
