Chicago – This Easter weekend it’s worth noting that one of the greatest renditions of “the greatest story ever told” celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2023. “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the film adaptation of the 1970 rock opera by then 21-year-old Anthony Lloyd Webber and 24-year-old Tim Rice, was directed by Norman Jewison and starred Ted Neeley. Neeley and other members of the cast remember the movie, in flashback interviews from 2013.
Ted Neeley, Title Character in “Jesus Christ Superstar”
Ted Neeley had the perfect show business start when coming of age in the 1960s. After venturing out of his native Texas to find a music career in Los Angeles, Neeley landed the role of Claude in both the Los Angeles and New York versions of “Hair” in 1969. The director of that show remembered Neeley when he was casting for the Broadway stage version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera,...

Chicago – In 1973, director Norman Jewison fashioned a radical film version of the rock opera/Broadway show “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and the cinematic innovations plus stellar cast equaled a timeless movie musical classic. Josh Mostel portrayed King Herod and Barry Dennen was Pontius Pilate in the iconic film.
Jesus Christ Superstar (Jcs) began it’s life as a rock opera, a concept record released in 1969 with Ian Gillan of the rock group Deep Purple singing the part of Jesus. Two key members of the album’s cast went on to do the film … Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene and Barry Dennen as Pontius Pilate. The Broadway show adaptation opened two years later, and the 1973 film followed with Ted Neeley as Jesus.

Two days ago Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Twitter page asked socially-isolated followers which of the composer’s songs they’d most like to hear Sir Andrew play. The answer was clear – “All I Ask Of You” from The Phantom of the Opera – but another response was more surprising: Lin-Manuel Miranda responded with a performance of his own Alw favorite.

Chicago – To begin with, Yvonne Elliman’s vocal stylings have appeared on albums that have sold 50 million units. The singer was discovered by Andrew Lloyd Webber for his seminal “Jesus Christ Superstar” rock opera (approximately 10 million albums sold), portraying Mary Magdelene, and also had a monster hit – “If I Can’t Have You” – on the legendary “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack (40 million sold).
The effusive Ms. Elliman was 17 years old, and singing in a London club in the late 1960s, when composer Andrew Lloyd Webber heard her ethereal voice, and signed her to portray Mary Magdalene in his new rock opera. The album of “Jesus Christ Superstar” was released in 1969, and took off like a rocket. Later, she joined the original Broadway cast of Superstar in 1971 in the same role, and finally completed the cycle as Mary M. with the 1973 film version, directed by Norman Jewison.

Chicago – What can be said for a man who has portrayed Jesus close to 5,000 times, and starred in the definitive Broadway and film versions of the most famous rock opera about Christ? Ted Neeley is as virtuous as his famous title role in “Jesus Christ Superstar.” During this Easter weekend, HollywoodChicago.com reprints this comprehensive overview of Ted Neeley, Superstar.

The rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar will be resurrected as a live concert on NBC airing Sunday, April 1, 45 years after the movie became a hit — so what better way to celebrate than by learning secrets about the original movie? The new event is just the latest incarnation of the musical, created in 1970 by then-20-somethings Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. "The premise comes from that Bob Dylan line, 'Did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?'" Lloyd Webber says of their story of Jesus' last six days. The 1973 film, starring Ted Neeley as Jesus and Carl Anderson as Judas, earned a devoted following. "It changed my life completely," says Ted, who at 74 still plays Jesus in traveling productions. "It's the most magnificent experience I've ever had — that's why I will do it until [my voice] doesn't work anymore," he says. Here's a look at some of the miracles that brought the movie to life.

Back in 2012, Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich introduced us to the sonically pleasing satanism that is The Devil’s Carnival - a fantastical underworld where damned souls sing away their sorrows. Three years later, the duo have finally returned to further their musical horror franchise by introducing Heaven into the mix, storming God’s gates in Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival.
The original film gives three sinners a shot at redemption, while this new traveling freakshow focuses on Lucifer’s growing disdain with the big man above. It’s about time someone exposed God for the blasphemous bastard he really is, and the Devil seems like the right man for the job – but it’s getting to the actual religious warfare that proves to be Bousman and Zdunich’s biggest challenge.
Picking up where The Devil’s Carnival left off, Lucifer (Zdunich) has grown tired of God’s (Paul Sorvino) almighty buffoonery.

In celebration of the new film, I spoke with two of the films stars – Chantal Claret and Jimmy Urine. One of the best things about the horror genre is its ability to divide audiences and create strong, passionate reactions. We may split on a comedy, sure, because we find different things funny, but chances are we won’t carry that experience with us much past when the end credits roll. Horror is different. Love it or hate it, it sticks with us, and when we see a movie that really speaks to us we connect with it in such way so as to believe the filmmaker has made something that’s just for us.
Few filmmakers embody this ideal more than Darren Lynn Bousman: while his recent output of films might not be for everyone, for the people they are for they are really for. The directorial life of Darren Lynn Bousman exploded back in 2005 when he took over the Saw franchise for three entries, but since his days of torturing the not-so-innocent, Bousman has found himself making the movies He wants to make. Independent cinema seems to be the filmmaker’s calling these days, and with a catalog boasting 2010’s Mother’s Day remake, Repo! The Genetic Opera and a few more notables, can you blame him? It’s a long and arduous road, but one that seems to be more fulfilling, given the determination that’s required to gamble on passion.
One of his more unique efforts is 2012’s The Devil’s Carnival, which sends a cast full of famous musicians into the bowls of Hell for a sinister carnival experience. You’ll dance with the devil and have a blast doing so in one of my favorite Bousman films, but it appears...

Chicago – One of the specialities of HollywoodChicago.com is the film and personality interview. The majority of these chats came through me, Patrick McDonald, and I couldn’t narrow it down to a top 10 or even a top 20. For 2014, there were 25 top interviews, and it is a diverse range of voices.

In 2012, director Darren Lynn Bousman and his team hit the road and took Lucifer with them, bringing The Devil’s Carnival film and accompanying live entertainment to cities across America. Now Bousman and company are back to raise a little hell in The Devil’s Carnival: Alleluia, in which Lucifer ignites a new scheme to rattle his opposition upstairs, as shown in the first official trailer for the horror musical sequel.

The Genetic Opera and 2012’s The Devil’S Carnival: Episode One, cult filmmakers Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich are back with the second installment to their fantasy-musical film franchise. If you were as big a fan of Darren Lynn Bousman and Terrance Zdunich’s musical horror spectacle The Devil’s Carnival as I, you can officially start rejoicing now that production has begun on The Devil’s Carnival 2. If you can remember, a teaser trailer was released way back in 2012 that suggested the hellish carnival inhabitants would be traded for – or joined by – an equally colorful cast of heavenly bodies, and this was confirmed by TechN9ne’s angelic Librarian. Since then, there hasn’t been much movement, but if you’ve been checking up on the project’s social media channels, you’d know that Bousman’s production has officially been given the green light! Alleluia!

Chicago – What can be said for a man who has portrayed Jesus close to 5,000 times, and starred in the definitive Broadway and film versions of the most famous rock opera about Christ? Ted Neeley is as virtuous as his famous title role in “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Ted Neeley had the perfect show business start when coming of age in the 1960s. After venturing out of his native Texas to find a music career in Los Angeles, Neeley landed the role of Claude in both the Los Angeles and New York versions of “Hair” in 1969. The director of that show remembered Neeley when he was casting for the Broadway stage version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera, “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He understudied in New York, and played the role on Broadway and in Los Angeles. That garnered interest from the producers of the 1973 film version, and he...

Part 2 of this list gets a bit more foreign. In fact, this may be the first full list that has more foreign-language films than English-language ones. Maybe English-speaking audiences aren’t as willing to watch religious films. Maybe films associated with religion come off as preachy or accusatory. Or maybe (most of) the films on this list have done it so well already that it doesn’t need to be done again.

Every once in a while, an actor will come on the scene with impact, impressing everyone with a powerhouse debut performance. But sometimes a great freshmen performance fails to lead to a good follow up, and the person who made the impressive debut starts to fade from the scene. It’s always sad when such potential is unmet. Here are 10 actors who started with a bang but faded with a whimper.
Heather Donahue (The Blair Witch Project-1999) She came on the scene in a big way, starring in the low-budget hit film that became such a sensation and started the ‘hand-held-camera’ style of film making (Used in Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield and others). She seemed poised to be the new Jamie Lee Curtis, the horror film “it girl”. She got a lot of offers to do other horror films but turned them down, in order to prevent type casting. Since then,...

Chicago – The TV show “Get Smart,” which had its original run on the NBC network from 1965-1970, was an oddball classic. Created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry, the sitcom was a goofy satire on cold war politics of the 1960s, with a hapless operative named Maxwell Smart (Don Adams) working for the Control agency, spying against a foreign menace called Kaos. Barbara Feldon (Agent 99) and Bernie Kopell (Sigfried) were part of the supporting cast.
Feldon and Kopell were also part of The Hollywood Show, a two day gathering of favorite TV and movie stars to meet fans and sign autographs. The next show in Chicagoland will be at the Hilton Rosemont on September 7th and 8th, 2013 (details below the article). Chicago – To answer the musical question, “Baby, if you ever wondered, wondered whatever became of me?” there is the sublime Loni Anderson, who portrayed Jennifer Marlowe on the popular 1970s sitcom, “Wkrp in Cincinnati.” Anderson was an attendee of “The Hollywood Show,” which comes to Chicago again on September 7th and 8th, 2013.
Loni Anderson is much like her character on Wkrp – luminous, intelligent and with a unique perspective. She climbed the show business ladder herself, after having a first marriage and a child in her teens. After that marriage ended before her 21st birthday, she finished college at the University of Minnesota and started an acting career, taking roles on stage and in local and national commercials. After moving to Los Angeles in 1975, she dyed her jet black hair to blonde, and began a series of high profile appearances on familiar dramas and comedies of the era, including “The Bob Newhart Show” and “Police Woman.

Quentin Tarantino loves his cameos. As a cinephile, his interest in actors spans many genres and countries and his latest, Django Unchained, is proof of a director trying to cram as many of his favourite performers into one film as is humanly possible. So many that he placed usually loquacious-types in dialogue-free roles (Michael Bowen, Ted Neeley), wrote new dialogue for others (Franco Nero, Bruce Dern) or invented new characters altogether, then realised he had no extra money to give those actors anything to do (Zoe Bell, Amber Tamblyn).
Truth is, Quentin Tarantino has always been something of a king of the cameo, his encyclopaedic film-boffinness regularly allowing him to fit the right actor with the right part, in a way that non-film geek filmmakers often find it so hard to get right. Featuring blink-and-you’ll-miss-’em performances from among the eight feature films Tarantino has directed, rather than simply written,...

Django Unchained is undoubtedly the most controversial film to come out of Hollywood this year. For starters, it features the “n-word” over 100 times.
It also presents a black avenger who kills white people for money as well as a black house slave whose allegiance to his white master is placed ahead of an allegiance to his race and ahead of a generally-accepted sense of morality. And, of course, the over-the-top violence of the film has not sat well with some audiences given the recent school shooting in Connecticut. But is any of this really a surprise?
At the press screening, the Hollywood crowd was more than amused. Although there were a few gasps when we were told that the film was two hours and forty-plus minutes long, the crowd cheered throughout the film. Clearly, this was an audience whose expectations had been satisfied. The fact that a crowd in Hollywood can be positively moved,...

Welcome to our latest entry in Their Holiday Favorites, a series in which members of the Austin film community tell us about movies they enjoy watching during the holiday season. This one is from Kelvin Phillips and Carla Jackson, who made their feature film debut this fall at Aff with A Swingin' Trio.
Kelvin: Though technically more of an Easter film because of its story, we love going back to Jesus Christ Superstar -- the original 1973 film directed by Norman Jewison -- for repeated viewings, particularly around the holidays. Firstly, there is the music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, plus there's the witty lyrics and controversial book (story) that presents Judas's argument in a sympathetic light.
But the thing we Really Love is the singing -- everyone is great, but special shoutouts have to go to Carl Anderson as Judas, Ted Neely as Jc, and Bob Bingham as the bass-singing Caiaphas.

Mark Kermode chooses the most believable sons of God...
Lothaire Bluteau in Jesus of Montreal (1989)
It's perhaps ironic that the best telling of the Easter story is a solidly secular work, but Denys Arcand's modern parable about a troupe of actors attempting to breathe new life into the Gospels (and annoying the church in the process) is a genuine masterpiece. Bluteau is mesmerising as the performer who starts to take Christ's teachings to heart, thereby radicalising those around him and threatening the authorities. Arcand's intelligent script even contrives a real-life resurrection which offers eyesight to the blind and health to the sick. A real cinematic miracle.
Ted Neeley in Jesus Christ Superstar (1973)
Hey kids! Jesus Rocks! Nowadays, this film of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical would doubtless be cast via a trashyTV show entitled How Do You Solve a Problem Like the Messiah? Back in 1973, however,...

Universal Pictures is currently in talks with 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb to helm the studio's upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar remake, reports the Risky Biz Blog. Universal and producer Marc Platt are in active development on the project.
The controversial but acclaimed musical — based on Tim Rice & Andrew Lloyd Webber's heavily stylized rock opera that arrived on Broadway one year prior — hit theaters in 1973, and typified the music and pop culture of the early '70s. Under the helm of legendary director Norman Jewison, it told the story of the final six days in the life of Jesus Christ through the troubled eyes of Judas Iscariot.
500 Days of Summer is Webb's first feature film, but contains bits of a musical. In one scene, Joseph Gordon-Levitt dances down the streets of downtown Los Angeles to Hall & Oates' "You Make My Dreams" as a group forms to dance around him.
