As Gov. Phil Murphy continues his push to woo film and television production to New Jersey, the state economic development authority today approved a partnership with a $1+ billion studio complex including 23 sound stages set to rise in the Bergen Point neighborhood of Bayonne, New Jersey at the site of a former Texaco oil refinery.
The project will break ground this fall, said Arpad Busson, the New York-based French financier whose Togus Urban Renewal is spearheading the project along with Rothschild in the UK and New York-based Moore Group. He said construction will take two years. Called 1888 Studios, after the year New Jersey-native Thomas Edison filed a patent for the motion picture camera, the 1.5 million square feet structure designed by architecture firm Gensler will look to evoke imagery of Golden Age Hollywood, spanning 55 acres and including comprehensive on-site production services, security, and a waterfront park and promenade accessible to the public.

A new report claims those closest to King Charles believe he is more ill than previously announced. Charles was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and remains under a doctor’s care. However, sources claim he is “really unwell.”
Those closest to King Charles claim he is ‘determined’ to regain his health
The Daily Beast royalist correspondent Tom Sykes shared details surrounding King Charles’ health. His sources claim the king is “determined” to regain the vitality he enjoyed before a January 2024 cancer diagnosis.
Sykes’ royal sources say of the king’s current health, “it’s not good.” The author claims to have spoken to friends of those within the royal circle who expressed their concern about Charles’s well-being.
“Of course, he is determined to beat it, and they throw everything at it. Everyone is staying optimistic, but he is really very unwell. More than they are letting on,” claims...

Gov. Phil Murphy has made TV and film a top priority for New Jersey ever since he took the helm of the Garden State in 2018. This week, Murphy made a West Coast swing to talk artificial intelligence with firms in the Bay Area and to talk new business with studios in Hollywood. Murphy’s targeted courtship has helped spark a building boom across New Jersey for soundstages and production facilities. Here Murphy discusses the impact of the state’s production tax incentive program and why he sees Georgia as a bigger rival for luring productions than neighboring New York.
You’ve just come off a West Coast trip to promote New Jersey as a growing media and entertainment hub. What was your specific mission, and how do you feel your conversations were received?

New Jersey Congressman Andy Kim was taking his kids to their annual checkup on Friday when his phone went haywire.

According to an indictment unsealed in federal court on Friday, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey) and his wife, Nadine Menendez, were charged with violating corruption and bribery laws.
The couple allegedly engaged in a scheme in 2018 to aid the Egyptian government. The indictment states that Menendez, who is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, given in the form of cash, gold bars, home mortgage payments, luxury vehicles and “other things of value.”
During a search of Menendez’s home last year, federal agents revealed that they discovered hidden cash and gold bars. Investigators also found more than $480,000 in cash hidden in envelopes and clothing. Additionally, $70,000 was found in Nadine’s safe deposit box.
Probes into the senator’s search history revealed that he had been researching information on the “kilo of gold price.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Monday that extends the state’s $330 million tax incentive for film and TV production.
The program will be extended for five years through 2030. For the first time, the credit will be refundable, meaning that companies like Netflix that have little or no state tax liability can receive cash back from the state. That change has been estimated to cost $200 million.
The bill is the result of more than a year of bargaining between Hollywood studios, entertainment unions and state lawmakers. In addition to extending the credit, the bill also includes an incentive for productions to hire a diverse workforce, both on screen and behind the camera.
The law also establishes gun safety requirements for all productions in the state, in response to the “Rust” shooting that occurred on the New Mexico set in 2021.
The move comes four days after New Jersey Gov.

Taylor Swift Settles Age-Old New Jersey Food Debate, As Governor Proclaims New Sandwich In Her Honor
Taylor Swift may be the official answer to New Jersey’s biggest breakfast sandwich debate.
For years, dating back to the Civil War, Garden State residents have fought over whether the meat in the state’s favorite egg-cheese breakfast sandwich is called Taylor ham or pork roll. Even President Barack Obama took note of the issue several years ago when he spoke at Rutgers University as a graduation keynote.
Now, NJ Gov. Phil Murphy may have brought peace to the valley. In honor of Taylor Swift’s shows at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands, Murphy has declared the “Taylor Swift ham, egg and cheese” as the official state sandwich.
“In New Jersey, we have a reputation for a great war between Taylor ham and pork roll,” Murphy said in a video message on Twitter.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has (wrongly) taken sides in the Taylor ham vs. pork roll debate. As the latest government official to roll out the red carpet for Taylor Swift, he named the official state sandwich after the pop star. The proclamation comes ahead of Swift’s “The Eras Tour” (grab tickets here) arriving at MetLife Stadium over Memorial Day weekend.
“In New Jersey, we have a reputation for a great war between Taylor ham and pork roll,” Murphy said in a video posted to Twitter. “Usually, we let you call it what you want, but since we have a superstar coming to town we know all too well, we should commemorate the occasion. New York is looking to increase the cap on tax credits the state gives to the film and TV industry from 420 million to 700 million and raise the incentive to 30 percent, according to the 2023 state budget proposed by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday.
The changes, which would run through 2034, are aimed at luring productions back from jurisdictions that left the state when it lowered its credit to 25 percent in 2020. Since then, states have turned to offering increasingly competitive incentives as film and TV production spending reached record highs. The proposal includes a 5 percent bump for TV series that relocate to New York, among other major revisions.
If the budget passes the legislature, it would also make above-the-line wage costs eligible for tax breaks for the first time, with certain restrictions. The credit would be capped at 500,000 per individual and limit above-the-line tax incentives to 40 percent of other qualified production expenses.
The proposed change follows Illinois Gov.

With New Jersey nipping at its heels and producers complaining about tardy payouts, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s latest budget for New York State, out Wednesday, raises the tax credit for film and television production back to 30, boosts the annual cap to 700 million, modifies payout terms and attempts to lure TV production from other states in a new incentive package that would run through 2034.
The changes, which must be approved by legislators, are meant to draw filming to the state. A key provision would increase the credit from 25 to 30 for eligible production and post-production. The credit had been lowered by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2020, just as other states were increasing their tax incentive programs.
Under the proposal for the state’s 2024 fiscal year that starts April 1, New York would:
∙ Raise its annual cap from 420 million to 700 million.
∙ Make above-the-line wage costs eligible, with restrictions: It would cap credit at 150,000 per individual.

Film and TV production spending in New Jersey topped 650 million in 2022, a record level of lensing activity that reflects the Garden State’s efforts to woo Hollywood productions.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy disclosed the milestone earlier this week, touting the success generated since he reinstated the state’s production tax incentive program in 2018. Murphy was in California this week to continue his campaign, meeting with studio, production and tech entities to talk up the benefits of filming across the river from Manhattan.
Movies and TV series shot in New Jersey yielded more than 8,500 jobs last year. That number is expected to grow because the state saw a surge of activity after Thanksgiving, Murphy said.

TikTok’s plan to cement its operations in the United States has hit a snag. As the ByteDance-owned app responds to allegations that it spied on Western journalists via their user data, more governors around the country are banning its installation on state devices. As foreign leaders cheer on the American measures, TikTok is freezing a specific hiring program that supports its proposed U.S. security deal.
TikTok had been hiring engineers to create a third-party team that would be paid by the app but led by U.S. government officials. Now, according to Reuters, that hiring process is on hold. A TikTok rep told Reuters that the proposed agreement had yet been approved, which led to the hiring freeze. Other TikTok security positions are hiring “rapidly,” the spokesperson said.

Despite 2019’s “The Vigil” making a modest splash amongst genre fans, the annals of Jewish horror movies remain pretty thin. Adding a page to those ranks is The Offering,” which actually has considerable overlap with that recent predecessor — it, too, is about a shape-shifting demon who preys on the living after the death of its latest host, whose corpse is on the premises awaiting burial.
English helmer Oliver Park’s debut feature is the slicker, somewhat showier affair of the two. But while diverting enough, it lacks that predecessor’s atmospheric dread and psychological plausibility, resulting in a jump-scare-riddled contraption ultimately more cheesy than frightening. Updated with government approval. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced that state officials have formally approved plans for Netflix to turn the former Fort Monmouth Army base into a state-of-the-art production facility.

If the idea of the future presented in “Moonhaven” doesn’t feel like anything else in recent sci-fi storytelling, it’s probably because the list of visual and spiritual inspirations for the show is short on other examples of sci-fi storytelling.
Most of the six-episode opening season of the AMC+ drama concerns itself with the goings-on at a lunar colony centuries in the future. Removed from the preconceptions (and mounting strife) of Earther society, the third generation of isolated, AI-guided moon inhabitants have flourished, and are ready to share their secrets with those back on the Blue Dot in their sky.
It’s an easy enough premise to grasp, but creating this alternate world of “Moonhaven” meant sifting through an endless number of visual and logistical possibilities. Showrunner Peter Ocko looked to some Earthly examples as a spiritual guide.
“In the beginning, we were saying, ‘What does this city look like?...

I spent two years fighting the complications of desperately wanting to recommend AMC’s delightfully weird dramedy Lodge 49 and being generally unable to even describe the show. A slice of surfer noir by way of Thomas Pynchon, like Terriers without the gumshoe trappings, Lodge 49 probably never would have been a mainstream smash, but I don’t think it ever came close to maxing out on the audience that would have fallen for its laconic, philosophical noodling and its abundant, low-key charms.

A New Jersey judge has denied a request from six of the major movie theater chains including AMC, Regal and Cinemark and led by Nato to reopen their doors, saying that the state’s move was a reasonable response to the Covid-19 pandemic and that it was not in violation of the theaters’ First Amendment rights.
The theaters back in July sued the state for a violation of free speech and taking property without just compensation, arguing that it was unfair that churches were allowed to reopen while movie theaters needed to remain closed.
Judge Brian Martinotti ruled that the theater chains’ request for an injunction was denied after hearing oral arguments on August 5. He wrote that movie theaters pose a specific risk with a difficulty of enforcing a mask policy inside a dark, enclosed area and said that by only closing indoor movie theaters, there remain other options to the public for safe viewing.

A New Jersey federal judge has denied a request from the major movie theater chains for a temporary restraining order against the state that would have allowed theaters to immediately reopen their doors.
The motion is a setback after companies like AMC, Regal and Cinemark and led by Nato jointly filed suit last week against New Jersey arguing that the state is violating the chains’ first amendment rights and taking property without just compensation.
Judge Brian R. Martinotti also set a hearing that’s expected for August 4 in which the theater chains’ request for an injunction will be litigated.

As any first-time homebuyer will know, finding an affordable, desirable property in today’s housing market can be an extreme ordeal. For young couple Gemma (Imogen Poots) and Tom (Jesse Eisenberg), searching for a suitable property turns into a literal nightmare when they become entrapped in a labyrinth-like neighbourhood of identical houses. Lorcan Finnegan’s sophomore feature is a surreal, unnerving minimalist sci-fi with satirical bite.
Vivarium starts with teacher Gemma and handyman Tom casually looking for their first home when they encounter bizarre estate agent Martin (Jonathan Aris). After a peculiarly enthusiastic sales pitch, the couple reluctantly agree to follow Martin to a new suburban housing development called Yonder. When Martin disappears during the tour the couple decide to hastily flee the site of this weird, completely unoccupied settlement of identical houses. Following multiple failed escape attempts, it starts to dawn on the couple that they have been trapped in this never-ending domestic prison.

With a nifty premise torn out of “The Twilight Zone” and a superb performance from Imogen Poots, “Vivarium” offers either the sort of horrifying distraction you might need right now, or a shattering window into the darkest parts of yourself you just don’t care to see.
Gemma (Imogen Poots) and Tom are a young couple looking to settle down in a new home, but not exactly looking to have children. After a fruitless search to find that perfect place, they meet up with an instantly creepy real-estate salesman, Martin (Jonathan Aris), an automaton straight out of “The Stepford Wives,” to Yonder, a housing tract where all the identical, pale-green starter homes and their white picket fences look copy and pasted on a seemingly endless horizon of astroturf.

Here's a comic book crossover that I never imagined happening! Idw has announced that they will launch a Star Trek vs. Transformers crossover miniseries.
According to io9, "The series will begin in the Star Trek universe, when the U.S.S. Enterprise answers a distress call on the edge of Klingon Space, only to find a dilithium mine under attack from 20th century-era jets and helicopters. When a certain red truck shows up to lend a hand, however, Kirk and the crew discover that there’s more than meets the eye to their new vehicular friends and foes."
The comic is being written by John Barber and Mike Johnson and the art is being done by Philip Murphy. Johnson had this to say in a statement:
"This is a crossover several decades in the making, and we could not be more thrilled to bring it to fans. John and I...

Nancy Steiner, costume designer for Showtime’s “Twin Peaks” reboot, had a serious problem: She wasn’t able to do Naomi Watts’ first fitting until 5 a.m. on her first day of shooting. The original plan had been to put the actress in 1950s-style dresses, but when showrunner David Lynch happened to see Watts in a blouse, jeans and a cardigan, he changed his mind about her whole look.
“You have to go with the flow, because things change on a dime,” says Steiner. “When David figures it out, that’s the right thing.”
Not every workflow process between showrunners and artisans, or between artisans and other artisans, rides on such last-minute changes or tilts on an auteur’s whims. But every production, particularly those in non-contemporary settings or fantastical or alternate worlds, must have below-the-line creatives who can be fluid and meticulous about lining up their visions to create a unified look and feel.

Democrats commemorated the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump’s election by “kicking Trump's ass, using his arch enemy: the popular vote,” Stephen Colbert reported happily after a full day’s worth of election result rumination on TV news. Dem wins include the first black mayor in Montana history, Phil Murphy replacing Chris Christie as governor of New Jersey, and Virginia’s first transgender state lawmaker who, in a moment of sweet irony, is replacing the Republican who…...
