While Steve Carell and Mike Myers face off at the multiplexes this week, indie theaters fight back with a wide range of quirk, including a meter maid romance, a doc on balloon animals and a horror flick about killer hair extensions.

"Brick Lane"

"Brick Lane" in London's East End might be just a relatively short jaunt down the M1 from Salford, but it's still a million miles (and a decade) away from the careful multi-ethnic empathy of another film that dealt with south Asian refugees in England, the 1970s-set "East is East." This story follows 18-year-old Nazneem (Tannishtha Chatterjee), who steps off a plane from Bangladesh and into an arranged marriage with middle-aged Chanu (Satish Kaushik). Bored and lonely, she's forced to question her beliefs when the charismatic and secular Karim (Christopher Simpson) knocks on her door. Director Sarah Gavron landed herself a Bafta nomination for this

Morton Halts Daughter's Acting Career

28 May 2008 12:13 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

British actress Samantha Morton has put a halt to her young daughter's acting career - as she doesn't want her to be a child star.

Morton's eight-year-old daughter Esme made her movie debut at the age of five - landing a role in 2007's Mr Lonely alongside her mother.

And although the youngster has been inundated with film offers ever since, the 31-year-old star won't let her take on any more roles until she is older.

She says, "She put herself into that film. She was very good. It felt like we were making a home movie. I didn't think, 'My daughter has gone into showbusiness.'

"A lot of scripts come her way. I read them and go, 'No!'."

Michelle Williams & Brad Pitt's Fireside Chat

24 May 2008 9:00 AM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

Michelle Williams celebrated her second Cannes premiere at a party in a private villa in the hills above the French city. And guess who stopped by? Brad Pitt! Pitt, 44, chatted briefly with Williams, 27, by the fire at the Villa St. Antoine in Vallauris, France. The party – for about 200 people – celebrated the premiere of Synecdoche, New York, Williams's film with Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Samantha Morton. At the party, which featured tents on the lawn, Pitt drank champagne and talked for nearly an hour with longtime friend Keener. He showed her pictures of his kids on his iPhone and

Mister Lonely

1 May 2008 1:04 PM, PDT | From avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news

Harmony Korine's Mister Lonely stars Diego Luna as a Mexican Michael Jackson impersonator who toils in relative obscurity on the streets of Paris until one day, while entertaining at an old folks' home, he meets "Marilyn Monroe" (played by Samantha Morton). "Marilyn" invites "Michael" to join her at a Scottish commune where she lives with her husband "Charlie Chaplin" (played by Denis Lavant) and a host of other good-hearted celebrity wannabes. Meanwhile, in a Central American village—and in an entirely unrelated story—a group of skydiving nuns spreads the Gospel via airborne stunts and the occasional miracle. Mister Lonely isn't moviemaking in a conventional sense; it's more tableaux-building. Writer-director Korine apparently imagined how neat it would be to watch Buckwheat give the Pope a bath, or Madonna sob into James Dean's shoulder while a bunch of men in blue jumpsuits fire rifles into a livestock pen. Then he made it.

The Tribeca Film Festival is in full swing, but if you don't live in New York, there's no need to fret. No less than three films ("From Within," "Mister Lonely" and "Redbelt") on this list of coming attractions have played the festival in recent days. Then again, if you are in New York and want to catch something outside the fest, there's always that intimate character drama starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and a red and gold metal suit of armor.

"The Favor"

Writer/director Eva J. Aridjis brings us a quiet tale of angst and alienation starring former New York subway busker Ryan Donowho as Johnny, a high school loner who's taken in by Lawrence (Frank Wood), a quiet pet photographer, after his mother (Paige Turco) is killed in an accident. In order to be the father he needs, Lawrence must fight through Johnny's rebellious

Morton 'Stalker' Cleared

29 March 2008 6:56 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

A man has been cleared of harassing actress Samantha Morton - but ordered to stay away from the star.

Noel Watts, 42, was said to have imagined a "fantasy relationship" with the Minority Report star, after becoming infatuated with her when he began dating one of her friends in the 1990s.

During the trial, Morton told the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court how Watts bombarded her agent with "angry" letters, calls and texts declaring his love for her.

Watts escaped the harassment charge, because Morton only ever received one text message. However, he was given a restraining order to stop him from contacting her.

But Watts was convicted of harassing Morton's agent Nicola Van Gelden after "frightening" her with texts and phone calls meant for the star.

He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for this offence, but will not serve as he has already spent 62 days on remand.

Morton 'Stalked' By Childhood Pal

12 March 2008 12:08 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Actress Samantha Morton has told a London court how she was stalked by a childhood friend who predicted her death in a phone call.

Noel Watts, 42, was said to have imagined a "fantasy relationship" with the Minority Report star, after becoming infatuated with her when he began dating one of her friends in the 1990s.

On Tuesday, Morton told the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court how Watts bombarded her agent with "angry" letters, calls and texts declaring his love for her.

She also admitted she felt "intimidated by his friendliness towards her".

Morton recalled, "The person said he was in love with me and if I won an Oscar I should thank him for it."

Watts denies two counts of harassment. The trial has been adjourned.

Samantha Morton Reveals She Suffered a Stroke

10 March 2008 7:15 AM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

Oscar nominee Samantha Morton has for the first time revealed that in spring 2006 she suffered a stroke so debilitating that she was "near to death" and forced to retreat to the shadows for 18 months, for fear of word about her condition affecting her career. The actress, 30, also tells the new issue of Observer Music Monthly that the paralyzing attack forced her to spend more than a year learning how to walk again. "I was near to death," Morton is quoted as saying. "I had a stroke at the beginning of 2006." The stroke is believed to have been triggered by a

Morton Reveals Secret Trauma Of Stroke

9 March 2008 7:14 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

British actress Samantha Morton was left close to death after suffering a severe stroke two years ago - which almost brought her successful career to an abrupt end.

The Golden Globe-winning actress has spoken out for the first time about the debilitating illness - which has remained a secret, until now - which left her unable to walk after part of the ceiling of her new home collapsed on top of her in 2006.

As a result of the incident, Morton pulled out of the thriller Transiberian and was replaced by fellow Brit Emily Mortimer as she took a year-and-a-half break from acting to recuperate from her head injuries.

But her health crisis was a lot worse than the public had been led to believe - a few days after the accident, she had a stroke brought on by the impact of the ceiling collapse, and she was left almost bedridden after losing control of her legs.

But with the support of her friends and family, she soon learned to walk again and has since made a full recovery.

However, she credits her close pal Jason Pierce - the singer from rock band Spiritualized - with helping her to overcome her bad health after his own life-threatening experience with pneumonia.

She says, "Jason and I have been mirroring each other. He was really sick and then I had a stroke at the beginning of (that) year.

"He was the only person I knew who understood what that was like, being near to death. He's just an incredible person. He's very courageous, and he helped me get through it all."

Morton is now back to full health and in January gave birth to a daughter, Edie, with filmmaker fiance Harry Holm.
