The Attitude Era was a magical period for WWE. It bred some of the most captivating angles, memorable stories and unforgettable characters in the history of professional wrestling. It was also home to some of the truly great Superstars to ever compete in a Vince McMahon-owned ring.
The February 22 episode of Monday Night Raw brought with it the announcement that The Godfather would enter the company’s Hall of Fame during WrestleMania weekend. A massively popular star whose penchant for pimping hos and rolling fatties fit in perfectly with the tone of that era’s programming. He was a great opening match character in that he energized crowds and had them looking forward to the rest of the night’s action.
Never anything more than a midcard talent, he is still fondly remembered as an iconic persona.

‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair is currently part of WWE television, commonly accompanying his daughter Charlotte to the ring for promos and matches. There are some fans who feel Flair takes away from the WWE Divas Champion, instead of adding to her aura. If that’s the case, it’s likely because Ric is such a huge personality. It’s probably very difficult for him to stand in the background and not be the centre of attention for segments.
Stretching right back to his heyday as head of The Four Horsemen, Flair has – by his own admission – enjoyed a good party. In this week’s article, one of his former friends reveals a startling story about the amount of money the ‘Nature Boy’ was willing to spend in order to have a good time. That same man also discusses his own career, leading to a stunning fact about things...

The Attitude Era was the most magical period in World Wrestling Entertainment history, a time where characters were vivid and well-defined, stories were compelling and content was as over-the-top as imaginable. Sex, violence and anti-authority sentiment dominated Monday Night Raw, garnering record television ratings and spawning a new broadcast known as SmackDown. Superstars such as The Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Mankind, The Undertaker, Sable, Chyna and Kane became household names while personalities like Val Venis, Goldust, D’Lo Brown and “Sexual Chocolate” Mark Henry became fan favorites of the die-hard audience.
As excellent as the television was, as intriguing as the stories were and as entertaining as the characters proved to be, the matches they crafted helped set the era apart from others.
Those matches were exercises in emotion, in drama and in non-stop action. They were not always the prettiest technical bouts but what they did...

A good ring name can absolutely transform a career; just look at Steve Austin. A brief flash of inspiration, apparently provided by his second wife, gave birth to one of the most famous ring names in wrestling – when she told the Rattlesnake to drink his coffee before it went ‘Stone Cold’. Before that he was struggling with the ill-fitting ‘Ringmaster’. Afterwards, he had a name which rolled off the tongue, conjured the correct image, and made sense in the context of his character.
Equally, a bad ring name can have disastrous consequences, but which is the worst in wrestling history? For every simple, evocative title such as ‘The Rock’, ‘Kane’, or ‘Undertaker’ – names that instantly tell us everything we need to know about a certain wrestler – there’s a confusing, bawdy, or downright unsuitable moniker out there.
It’s important not to confuse a terrible ring name with...

The full content listing for the upcoming WWE DVD and Blu-ray set on the life and death of Owen Hart has been revealed, courtesy of the Wrestling DVD Network. The list includes all chapter titles for the documentary feature on disc one, as well as all extras, including the full list of matches selected for the package.
Bret Hart recently commented on the documentary portion of the set, sounding very pessimistic about the chances that the documentary will do a good job telling the full story of his brother’s life. Bret believes that WWE is having to walk on egg shells to cater to Owen’s widow, Martha, who is not supporting the DVD release.
Bret told the Fight Network:

The career of WWE superstar Adam Rose has taken a lot of twists and turns since he signed with the company five years ago. In April 2014, he had a breakthrough as he made the main roster as Adam Rose, the babyface leader of “The Party Posse” that was there to have fun. Once that gimmick failed, he turned heel and recently he debuted a new look as “The Party Pooper” Adam Rose.
His new gimmick started at last week’s Main Event tapings against Jack Swagger and continued at this week’s against Fandango.
The new look for Rose consists of black tights, glasses and a polo shirt. It’s basically the opposite of what he was doing before and a way to get the crowds to hate him. The image above is something he tweeted on August 23.

The height of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Attitude Era brought with it a clear focus on sexuality. Female performers such as Sable, Debra, Miss Kitty and Trish Stratus became huge stars thanks to their willingness to strip down for the fans, who appreciated the incredibly beautiful women showing off their assets for their entertainment.
But the female stars of the global wrestling empire are hardly the only performers to be sexualized by management.
Dating back to the 1980s and the initiation of the Rock and Wrestling Era, “Ravishing” Rick Rude had been a performer whose body and his flaunting of it was absolutely essential to his character and its development. It was key to the storylines he was involved in and helped fuel his most memorable feud, that being the war with Jake “the Snake” Roberts over wife Cheryl.

Pro wrestling has never been reticent to hop on a bandwagon, which makes it something of a cultural barometer, capturing the wider trends and happenings of any given era. At the height of the Gulf War, Sergeant Slaughter teamed up with General Adnan and Colonel Mustafa only to be defeated by Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior and a wave of fervent patriotism from the stands; The Hardy Boyz’ ascent coincided with the mainstreaming of alternative culture, all finger gestures, cargo pants and moody expressions; and in a particularly memorable 1998 episode of Monday Night Raw, Val Venis almost suffered the same fate as John Wayne Bobbit (though, in fairness, Bobbit’s ordeal was five years beforehand).
But the haircuts… Nothing encapsulates a time and place like a bowl cut, a faux hawk or frosted tips. Pro wrestling is no exception, especially the Attitude Era. Beyond the headlines and storylines, there...

Hello, ladies! That husky-toned call followed by the sounds of a wailing saxophone could only signal the arrival of one WWE superstar: Val Venis. Real name Sean Morley, Venis was one of the most risqué characters of the envelope-pushing Attitude Era.
Venis originally wanted to be a helicopter pilot and wrestle at weekends, for fun. He trained under one of the maddest wrestlers of all-time, Dewey ‘The Missing Link’ Robinson, and after getting booked for a summer tour in England he never stopped working full-time. Helicopter flying had to be put on hold.
He wrestled all over the place and was well-seasoned before he made it to the red-hot WWF in 1998. Vince McMahon proposed that Val play a porn star-cum-wrestling star and Val loved it. He knew it would make an immediate impact and be embraced by the young male demographic. He was right.
Val had a tremendous career in the WWE.

There’s no two words in the english language more likely to induce a hardcore wrestling fans righteous fury than ‘PG Era’, except maybe the words ‘returning’ and ‘Batista’.
The company changed the classification of its programming during the summer of 2008 from TV-14 to PG. For many fans it was a case of ‘we didn’t know what we had until it was gone.’ After the rating change, though it didn’t happen immediately, many of the companies edgier tendencies were gradually scaled back or dropped outright. ‘Suggestive Dialogue’ was trimmed down, the sexual angles were sanitised (no more choppy choppy of Val Venis’ pee pee) and there were much fewer examples of male wrestlers laying hands on female wrestlers.
But what the fans miss most from that different time, that fond-remembered TV-14 age, those Wonder Years, is, simply, the blood. Under PG rules there was to be no more intentional bloodshed,...

Moreso a tremendous character actor in a pro wrestling ring than just another grappler on the World Wrestling Entertainment roster, Glen Jacobs’ near two-decade run as Kane in WWE has had more than its share of unusual moments. For the past 20 years, the way that the emotionally scarred brother of the walking undead Undertaker has related to both men and women on the roster has provided the most ridiculous, emotional, intriguing and always most gripping of moments.
For a ghastly pale seven foot tall man lacking eyebrows, Kane’s been in love more times than Elizabeth Taylor, married more times than Russell Brand, had more public meltdowns about romance than Rihanna, been more violent in and out of love than Chris Brown, and had more family strife than Ozzy, Sharon, Jack and Kelly Osbourne combined.

The wrestling business is filled with stupid characters. We’ve seen plenty of them over the years and there are even some bad ones in WWE today. It’s part of the business. Vince McMahon and company will throw different types of characters out there to see what works. People that call him a genius might want to remember some of the bad gimmicks that WWE has put in the ring over the years.
There are many different types of stupid gimmicks, but the ones we’re looking at today are those that are based on real life occupations. It would seem like WWE has covered a lot of different fields by creating characters based on different kinds of jobs. It’s likely because they don’t want their characters to be too similar. A lot of people have been talking about Benjamin Morris’ 538 piece, “Are Pro Wrestlers Dying at an Unusual Rate?”
Like Morris, I am neither an actuarial scientist nor a demographer. So, our interpretations of the data should be taken with a grain of salt. My results were somewhat different from Morris’ due to a difference data set and changes in how we calculated actuarial predictions.
Differences in methodology from Morris
I also used Social Security Actuarial Life Tables, but my “expected mortality rates” for the age groups were not the same as Morris’. For each wrestler, I calculated what their age would have been as of today. Then, based on gender, I looked up the number of lives (out of 100,000) that were expected to still be alive and converted that to a percentage. His analysis looked at wrestlers who were on 20+ WWF PPVs through 2002. I went with a...

What does it mean to be a Canadian professional wrestling fan? It means that when you’re in the second grade they teach you how to apply the Sharpshooter in gym class. Okay so that’s not true, but believe me when I tell you that Canadians love professional wrestling as much as any part of the world.
Canada is not a huge country in terms of population. In terms of area it’s the second biggest to Russia, but it’s so damn cold in the north that not a lot of people live up there. In a year where the WWE’s other spiritual home, Madison Square Garden has learned that it will be soon be moving locations, I’ve been thinking a lot about the arenas that have housed the biggest moments in wrestling history. Since Madison Square Garden is getting its own WWE DVD, I decided to take a closer look at the WWE’s official home for the biggest party of the summer, the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Opened in 1999, the Staples Center has always been a hotbed of WWE activity, despite also being the home of the La Lakers, La Clippers and the La Kings.
15. Raw: April 3rd 2000 - The Beginning of a Beautiful Relationship
The first big WWE event in the Staples Center was an episode of Raw broadcast the night after Wrestlemania 2000, which according to Jr sold out in 11 minutes. This Raw would host the fallout from the night before,...

Monday Night Raw is one of the longest running shows on American television, it’s been in a few forms through the years and had many different stars and also attracted big names guest stars all through one thing, wrestling. It’s had funny moments, dramatic moments and it’s even had moments that have involved wrestling. The most important thing it’s also had though is favourite moments for all its fans, and yes it has them. Whether it’s been high in the ratings or losing in its many battles with other wrestling promotions and other forms of sports entertainment it’s survived, and survived long enough to be able to have a DVD/Blu-ray set of the WWE: Top 100 Raw Moments.
Whoever created this list came up with quite a few good choices, some of them could be argued to be a bit of a filler though...

Wrestling fans whether it be ones that like WWE, like Tna, Roh or any other smaller companies out there have to admit there was a time when the WWE were at the top of the game, hell Tna didn’t even exist yet. It was the time of the Monday night rating wars when both Tna and WWE (or WWF as it was known back then) had to up their game to show they were the best, to get that precious Nielsen rating to prove they were the best wrestling company. We all know the WWE Attitude era, it was even brought back in the WWE ’13 game because it’s still a time that is popular with a large selection of the fans. This is why The Attitude Era is such a fun set of discs to watch.

Full Disclosure: I am absolutely crazy about the Royal Rumble. It’s been a passion of mine ever since I was a kid, and has evolved into a near obsession of mine as I have grown older. I’ve done statistical analyses of each Rumble in my spare time. I’ve watched and re-watched the most memorable ones until my eyes go bleary. It’s one of the biggest reasons that I am a fan of pro wrestling, because it offers everything that the WWE has built in the past year. Since it is such a fixation of mine, and because getting to talk about it makes me somewhat giddy, I’ve decided to write a series of articles on the event in preparation for the big showdown on the 27th in Phoenix. Like (almost) all of its past incarnations, this year’s match looks like it shouldn’t disappoint,...

Once regarded as a stepping stone to the WWE Championship or, at the very least, a consolation prize for top talent who were never going to get that World Title run, the Intercontinental Championship has always been a highly regarded belt. Not only in the WWE, but in all of professional wrestling.
From its fictitious origin involving a wrestling tournament to crown the first champion in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which just goes to show how much they could get away with in wrestling back before the internet ruined kayfabe, to now, the Intercontinental Title has given us great matches and even greater champions.
5 Intercontinental Champions That Sucked… 5. Road Dogg
It should’ve been Billy Gunn. Think about it. The New Age Outlaws were so popular at the time that the WWE decided to give them each their own run at a singles title. The obvious choice for I-c Champ was Billy Gunn.

There are currently 105 current and former superstars that have been announced for WWE 13, the largest roster for any wrestling video game in history. Among those 105; 20 superstars and divas are downloadable content, and include the current number one contender for the WWE Championship Ryback, the Saviour of the Masses Damien Sandow and the Raw General Manager Aj Lee. Furthermore, there are some great wrestlers of the Attitude Era available to purchase, like the complete stable of Too Cool, Val Venis and Brian Pillman.
A great mix of superstars and divas that we want to play as, and some that haven’t featured on a WWE franchise video game in over a decade. However, there are many fans that have been left clamouring for more. Even with a roster of over 100, they still pine for their favourite wrestlers of now and of the past. And it falls to me to decide the...

We’re less than a month away from the release of WWE ’13, and Thq has detailed Dlc plans for the months to follow release. If I may steal a line from The Miz, the planned updates are awwwwwwweesooooome!
Sure, you’ve got a few duds in the bunch with the likes of Drew McIntyre and Yoshi Tatsu, but then everything is made better with the likes of Ryback, The Usos, Tensai and freakin’ Brian Pillman joining the roster.
The Dlc will be broken down into three packs. The “Attitude Era” pack on launch day, the “WWE Superstars” pack in December and finally the “You’re Welcome in Five Languages” pack in January.
As with the previous game, wrasslin’ fans can pick up all the packs in the Fan Axxess program for $19.99. Which is not only a discount from purchasing them separately, but also comes with wrestlers Diamond Dallas Page and Goldust.

Thq announced at WWE SummerSlam Axxes yesterday the complete roster for WWE 13, officially unveiling the 42 Modern Era Superstars, 8 WWE Divas and 34 Attitude Era Superstars & Divas – along with the extra downloadable content characters that will be included in the game. That’s 87 superstars in total, which is the biggest rosters of stars in any wrestling game in history and no doubt there’ll be more Dlc Superstars made available before and after the game’s release.
The roster ended up being more or less what we had anticipated and there were very few surprises. Sadly however there were a few names we hoped would be in the game that were overlooked, the likes of Tyson Kidd (who was criminally in last year’s WWE 12 but was overlooked this year despite a small push this summer), Tensai, William Regal (who should always be in every single WWE game), Tyler Reks and Curt Hawkins,...

Of all the things to trip up Vince McMahon's World Wresting Entertainment, one might not expect copyright to be on top of the list. And yet, just days after cult wrestler Val Venis denied rumors he'd be returning to the ring, tweeting "Not so long as they support sopa/cispa," referring to controversial copyright and privacy legislation, the WWE finds itself moving from copyright enforcer to the other side of the ring in grappling with a copyright lawsuit from a man who purports to be the "pioneer in the confluence of music and professional wrestling." Papa Berg says in

It was announced at Tuesday’s WWE SmackDown tapings that Vickie Guerrero will be the Interim General Manager of Raw and SmackDown next week. For reasons unexplained, The Great Khali will be her assistant.
On this week’s Raw it was announced that until the WWE Board of Directors appoint new General Managers of both shows (which we imagine will probably happen at the 1,000th celebrations next month) there will be temporary hosts of the show each week, all of which will be former General Managers and Commissioners of Raw & SmackDown.
Mick Foley was the first guest host of the show this week and we now know Vickie Guerrero will be next week’s.
For future names that could serve as Interim Gm’s we are likely to see Teddy Long, William Regal, Paul Heyman, Vince McMahon (this one seems certain given his ability to boost ratings), Stephanie McMahon, Shawn Michaels,...

WWE Extreme Rules is the time of year where stipulation matches take centre stage, so what better time to look back at some of the strangest gimmick matches in wrestling history.
Kennel from Hell
Watch It Here
So a retired prison guard steals your dog, invites you over and tricks you into eating him. How do you get revenge? Challenge them to a, “Kennel from Hell” that’s how! On paper it sounded intimidating. A cage surrounding the ring, a hell in the cell surrounding that and in between those rabid dogs. The only way to win was to escape both cages and outrun those angry dogs. Sounds exciting. Unfortunately it wasn’t.
The first (and last) “Kennel from Hell,“ took place at WWF Unforgiven 1999, between Al Snow and the Big Bossman. Unforgiven was already an odd event before the Kennel even came out. The first match of the evening...
