19 October 2009 11:06 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Over the course of dozens of editions of HollywoodChicago.com’s DVD Round-Up column, we have brought our readers more than a few collections that possessed a remarkable variety of genres in one piece, but few match this week’s column, a quartet of titles that include supernatural drama, reality television, foreign animation, and classic fantasy.

It would be harder to say what these titles have in common than to point out their remarkable differences. All they really share is a launch on DVD around the same time. We truly have something for everyone this week. Synopsis, cast, technical details, and special features follow. Pick your favorite…

Princess” was released on September 29th, 2009.

Misspent Youth

6 October 2009 4:23 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

The most remarkable thing about Sacha Gervasi's "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" may be that it is unarguably one of the most heart-swelling and moving films ever made about rock 'n' roll, and at the same time, it is very unlikely to convert any viewers into passionate Anvil fans. In fact, the movie barely bothers to make a case for Anvil, the orphaned band maudit from the '80s surge in heavy metal heavy hitters, as musicians, and doesn't allow you to hear a single song all the way through. (Contrast that to, say, Jeff Stein's "The Kids Are Alright," which has certainly transformed innocent non-partisans into life-grabbing Who fans, and did it with whole songs played beginning to end.)

Frankly, Anvil's thunking, adolescent caterwaul isn't very promising, even if Anvil's commercial fate seems less surprising in retrospect than the success of bands like Mötley Crüe, Anthrax and Megadeth. »

Palisades Ushers In a Bloody Porn Princess to DVD

14 July 2009 2:10 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The porn industry isn't always fun. Other than dodging spooge there can be lots of dangers ... such as accidental death and the probability of gore-soaked revenge!

From the press release:

Predominantly anime, but part live-action, Palisades Tartan is proud to present Princess, a sexually graphic and brazenly violent film that takes aim at the porn industry using its own equally astonishing and taboo arsenal. This film will street September 29th in video stores across the country.

August returns home from years of missionary work after hearing about the death of his sister Christina, who – after going from greatness to the gutter as the famous porn star ”The Princess” - has finally died of drug abuse. She has left behind her five-year-old daughter, Mia, with a prostitute, which August, a devout clergy man, finds unacceptable. He visits the brothel to bring Mia home with him and becomes her guardian. Burdened by sorrow, »

Morgenthaler’s Princess Finally Sprung From Purgatory!

7 July 2009 4:15 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

It was more than three years ago now that Tartan Films initially announced that they had purchased North American and UK rights to Anders Morgenthaler’s violent anti-porn animation Princess, a provocative and shocking bit of work that - at the time - was still riding high off of a controversial appearance in Cannes.  The company did manage to release the film in the UK for a short time but distribution and money woes hobbled the Us release, a situation that culminated with the company collapsing globally - pulling the UK release off the shelves - and the status of the film lurching into uncertainty.  But then along came Palisades Media, scooping up the Tartan library and promising the reorganize and get things out there in good time.

Well, the time is good, apparently.  The freshly re-branded Palisades Tartan have just announced their first two releases, and guess what one of them is? »

Copenhagen Bombay Launches Production On The Great Bear

31 May 2009 11:33 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

I’ve long been saying that European animation is on the rise and when out prowling for interesting new material one of my first stops in recent years has been Danish production house Copenhagen Bombay, the outfit co-founded by Princess director Anders Morgenthaler.  They’re a very diverse, very talent-oriented company dabbling in a broad range of projects and they’ve just announced a brand new feature scheduled for release in the winter of 2011.

Jonathan, 11, usually spends his vacations alone with his grandfather who lives on the edge of a vast forest populated by mythical animals. This year his kid sister Sophie joins him. But it’s not cool to be stuck with a little sister, so he does what he can to avoid her. He succeeds entirely too well: Sophie is kidnapped by a giant, 1000-year-old bear. Now, Jonathan has to venture into the heart of the forest to »

Beware The Naked Moped Bikers!

31 March 2009 11:20 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Yes, yes ... around these parts the concept of a gang of twenty-something guys riding around on mopeds would be pretty silly and, honestly, it seems to be done with a sense of humor in Denmark as well, but when the trailer for moped-biker flick The Wild Hearts begins with one of its lead characters being branded, well, you know there’s a little bit of intensity to it ...

The Wild Hearts comes via Danish production house Copenhagen Bombay, the production outfit co-founded by Anders Morgenthaler shortly after the release of his feature film Princess, and at first glance tis appears to be the first narrative live action project from the company that has, so far, focused primarily on animation and documentaries.  And it looks like they’re bringing one huge shot of energy to the Danish film scene ...
