Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, »

Set up in 1998, The British Independent Film Awards aim to celebrate merit and achievement in independently funded British film, both to honour established British talent, and to promote emerging stars to a wider audience. This year's awards are held at The Brewery in Central London, and the extensive list of nominees documents what an incredible year British independent cinema has enjoyed - with Sir Michael Caine announced as the recipient of the prestigious Variety Award, celebrating his career which has spanned a staggering five decades; coinciding with his lead role in this year's Harry Brown. Daniel Day-Lewis will be honoured with the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contributor to British Film by an actor, and is described by the Bifa jury as 'one of the most exceptionally talented and enigmatic actors in the industry'. Debate has been rife as to who will be crowned victorious by the Bifa jury, with Katie Jarvis, »

We’re ten years on in Guy Ritchie’s career, and from all evidence he’s about to turn the corner into pure commercial filmmaking. For most people there’s only one answer to what derailed him, and that is: Madonna. The pre-Madonna years featured Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch, the Madonna years featured Swept Away and Revolver, and the post-Madonna’s are now Rocknrolla and Sherlock Holmes, which should be one of the big pictures of 2009. My review of Guy’s Ritchie’s first film after this jump.
Lock, Stock is one of the numerous 90’s crime films to come in the wake of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. It’s a genre that burnt itself out rapidly, with only people like Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie proving themselves above the fray. The majority of the genre was overheated pabulum like Things to Do »

Observe & Report
Also known as the slightly smarter version of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Observe & Report stars likeable Seth Rogan as Ronnie, an obsessive mall security guard that dreams of being a cop. It’s actually quite funny and has some great set pieces.
Rogan is a great comedic actor and this is his show. Worth watching, you might be pleasantly surprised.
Also available in Blu-Ray
Matthew McConaughey has made a career out of playing smug bachelors recently and he continues the trend with this latest rom-com. He plays Connor Mead who, while attending his brothers wedding is reminded of his past conquests. It’s predictable stuff but passable enough. It boasts an impressive supporting cast led by Jennifer Garner and Michael Douglas and it’s directed by Mark Waters who also helmed Mean Girls. It’s light, fluffy and will give fans of rom-coms exactly what they want. »

“Telstar” will hit UK Cinemas this Friday the 19th of June and stars Nick Moran, Kevin Spacey, Con O’Neill, Ralph Little, Jj Feild and Pam Ferris.
Telstar is the stranger-than-fiction true story of legendary independent record producer Joe Meek. A maverick musical genius who wrote and recorded a string of number one hits in the early 60s, Meek famously enjoyed phenomenal early success with Telstar – the biggest selling record of its time and the first Brit band single to top the Us charts. Named after the first communications satellite, which launched in 1962, the unique instrumental single was released later that same year, becoming a number one hit on both sides of the Atlantic for Meek’s band The Tornados, all from a flat on the Holloway Road. »

Directed and co-written by Nick Moran, Telstar, the biopic of '60s pop producer Joe Meek, is out this week and judging by this clip it'll offer music lovers a bumper bag of psychedelic delights.Pop impresario Meek has a uncanny genius for turning out deliriously other-worldly records in the late '50s and early '60s. His tracks had catchy tunes that propelled them to the top of the charts - think Buddy Holly played by the Max Rebo Band - while his darker, obsessional side meant he was unafraid to draw a gun on his musicians when the situation demanded. The Phil Spector-like producer is played by Con O'Neill with Kevin Spacey as his business partner Major Banks. Ralf Little is Chas Hodges, better know as one half of Chas and Dave, who worked with Meek as a session musician in his pre-Snooker Loopy days.Telstar is out this Friday 19 June. »

Nick Moran has said that the late Joe Meek was not a British version of the recently-imprisoned Us producer Phil Spector. The director of new Meek biopic Telstar told Metro that there were key differences between the two music makers. Moran said: "Phil Spector wandered around with his wigs and firearms, trying to be overtly - as a small Jewish guy - heterosexual, whereas Joe Meek, who is built like a farm hand and could rip your (more) »

- What would Cannes be without Fortissimo Films? Actually what would any of the other big festivals be without this kind of 'company'? They got a foursome of projects which I am eagerly awaiting to see from helmers Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Tsai Ming-Liang and a Latin American product from Michel Franco. Sadly, this will be a bitter sweet Cannes for the company with the passing of an industry vet Wouter Barendrecht, who was an anchor in bringing the best of Asian films to North American audiences. In the near future we can look forward to the next Todd Solondz and Stephan Elliott projects and a "Marley" docu around the corner. There is a big chance that Ciaran Hinds ends up playing Aberforth Dumbledore in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". Reporting the matter was The Leaky Cauldron, which claimed that the actor's representatives have expressed expectations and hopes of Hinds landing the role of this helpful Order of the Phoenix member.
If 56-year-old Hinds indeed nabs this Albus Dumbledore's brother, he will replace Jim McManus, who appeared briefly as Aberforth in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". While breaking out this casting possibility to the surface, The Leaky Cauldron still noted that Warner Bros. have yet to give any comment on the story.
Ciaran Hinds is an Ifta-winning actor. He has appeared in a number of feature films, including "Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life", "Miami Vice", "The Nativity Story" and "There Will Be Blood". He recently lent his voice to Botticelli for "The Tale of »

Hot on the heels of the report that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" has found a villain in actor Nick Moran, Warner Bros. have come out with the announcement of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II" release date. Revealing their upcoming tentpole and franchise films, the studio revealed that they have set the last "Harry Potter" movie to make its debut on July 15, 2011.
This new schedule puts "Part II" in U.S. theaters roughly eight months after "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I" sees the big screen on November 19, 2010. At this point, the final half of the last "Harry Potter" series by J.K. Rowling is listed to be up against Marvel Studios' anticipated superheroes film, "The Avengers", which is currently set on the same date.

The last "Harry Potter" movie, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", may have found its villain in Nick Moran. According to Metro, the actor who plays card sharp Eddie in "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" was overheard telling guests at the Global Cool London Fashion Week party in London about his role in the seventh "Harry Potter" film.

I’ve commented before that of the major players in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels I had always expected it would be Nick Moran and not Jason Statham who made the big breakout internationally. Moran had the looks, the charisma and is - in my opinion - a vastly superior actor. But while Statham and - to a lesser degree - Jason Flemyng have both gone on to have thriving careers in front of the camera, Moran has been largely absent from the screen. And it turns out that this is because he has entirely different aspirations. Moran, you see, is a successful playwright and theater director and after having success with one of his theater plays he has now adapted it for the big screen with Telstar.
Set against a backdrop of early 60’s London, Telstar is the story of the world’s first independent record producer, »
