- In 1994, he filed the first law suit against 13 tobacco companies by a state, demanding cigarette manufacturers reimburse Mississippi for the cost of health care related to tobacco-caused illnesses. The law suit resulted in the tobacco companies paying Mississippi a $4.1 billion settlement.

- First elected in 1987, he is currently serving his fourth term as Attorney General of the state of Mississippi.
- In 1998 was named "Lawyer of the Year" by The National Law Journal and "Public Official of the Year" by Governing Magazine.
- Was elected as Mississippi's youngest District Attorney in 1979.
