Books: Review:Jonathan Safran Foer: Eating Animals

11 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

As Everything Is Illuminated author Jonathan Safran Foer prepares to accompany an anonymous activist on a 3 a.m. raid of a factory farm in his new nonfiction book Eating Animals, he runs through a litany of his qualifications. He’s “not a journalist, activist, veterinarian, lawyer, or philosopher”; growing up in New Jersey, he claims never to have approached a farm animal before, except as dinner. He’s just an Everyguy who stumbled into an industrial chicken coop. But because Foer can never decide whether to play the Michael Moore-esque bumbler or the credible expert, his book-length report on ... »

U.S. Producer Raises Money In Singapore For Madoff Movie

11 November 2009 4:13 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

The owner of a Singapore company making skincare products says he was persuaded by Edmund Druilhet, an independent U.S. film producer, to invest $200,000 in a movie about confessed Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff -- more than 20 percent of the film's entire budget. Eddy Syahputra told the Asian website mysinchew.com that in return for his investment, Druilhet gave him and his wife roles in the film and featured his skincare line. "Putting my products in the movie was an incentive," he said. "Being an actor was also new and interesting. I have had a desire to be an actor but I never pursued it." The Indonesian-born Syahputra said that the $200,000 he invested in the movie, titled Made Off with America, represented his savings. "It is a high-risk investment, but when there is a high risk, there is a high return." Little is known about the status of the film, although a trailer has been posted on the film's website, madoffwithamerica.com. In an interview posted on YouTube, Druilhet rants against "scumdog Ponzi-aire" Madoff, suggests that Michael Moore is part of a government coverup conspiracy, and denounces authorities for allowing "10 million fugitives" to go free. (He's also making a movie about fugitive director Roman Polanski.) New York University film professor Gillian Gordon, currently a visiting professor at the Nyu Tisch School of the Arts in Singapore, expressed skepticism about the Madoff film project. In a production costing just $1 million, "How will you have the helicopters, the furs and the house in the Hamptons in the movie?" she asks. »

Films tackle sorrow and the City | Jessica Reed

Works by film-makers such as Michael Moore at the Sheffield Documentary Festival illustrate society's erosion of individuality

There is a striking moment in Greg Barker's Sergio, his documentary about Sergio Veira de Mello showcased last weekend at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival, in which the late Brazilian United Nations ambassador is asked by a journalist whether or not the Un's presence in Iraq is just a cover to strengthen the American coalition on occupied territory. His expression switches from attentiveness to fierce disagreement in a split second. "We are," he responds with such a firm a categorical tone it sounds as if he was personally taking offence at the question, "an independent organisation, and we do not, let me be clear, we do not act for anyone."

As it turns out, De Mello had been persuaded by Kofi Annan, Condoleezza Rice and Tony Blair to take the impossible job »

“Capitalism” Not So Lovely For Liberty Media

10 November 2009 1:34 PM, PST | Studio Briefing - Film News | See recent Studio Briefing - Film News news »

Liberty Media acknowledged Monday that its decision to bring Michael Moore's Capitalism: A Love Story to the screen via its Overture Films studio turned out to be not the best capital investment. In its quarterly report, Liberty noted that its Liberty Capital unit, which runs Overture (oddly, not its Liberty Entertainment unit), posted a 22-percent drop in revenue and cited the Moore documentary as one of two disappointing releases that dragged down its income. (The other was the sci-fi flick Pandorum.) The film, which was released in September, grossed just $13.7 million. Word that Liberty had agreed to back the Moore film originally raised eyebrows since it in effect paired the liberal Moore with the staunchly libertarian John Malone, the head of Liberty. But it was said that the two saw eye-to-eye on most aspects of the financial crisis. (Overture has seen a boost in its current quarter from Law Abiding Citizen and The Men Who Stare at Goats.) Aside from Overture, most of Liberty's other businesses showed a small improvement in the quarter or were flat. Nevertheless, shares in the company fell 6 percent on Monday. Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen attributed the fall "to investors' expectation of even faster U.S. growth." »

Blu-Ray Review: Galvanizing ‘Food, Inc.’ is Riveting, Must-See Viewing

9 November 2009 11:23 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – If you thought Al Gore’s truth was inconvenient, get a load of the one presented by filmmaker Robert Kenner. To paraphrase Peter Finch, Kenner’s new documentary is guaranteed to make viewers exclaim, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to eat the same way anymore.”

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

Like Michael Moore’s “Capitalism: A Love Story,” “Food, Inc.” boldly questions the entire system that American citizens have taken for granted over the last several decades. One of the most noble uses of the cinematic medium is to investigate issues that most people wouldn’t have the time or ability to examine on their own. “Food, Inc.” isn’t just great investigative journalism, it’s one of the year’s best films. It may be hard to stomach, but it’s well worth digesting.

Food, Inc. was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, »

Can the "Yes Men" and Michael Moore Fix Capitalism?

6 November 2009 2:40 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

With billions of taxpayer dollars propping up the largest financial institutions amid news stories about record bonuses on Wall Street and forecasts for a "jobless recovery" at best, there are a lot of good reasons to doubt the core promises of the capitalist system these days. Populist anger abounds and two movies in theaters now are helping bring the evils of capitalism into focus; The Yes Men Fix The World by the "Yes Men," (opening in Los Angeles this weekend) and Michael Moore's Capitalism, A Love Story. Perhaps you haven't seen Michael Moore's latest film about capitalism because you've seen some of Moore's other works -- Roger and Me about the demise of Gm's auto plants in Flint Michigan, Fahrenheit 911 about September 11, 2001 and the buildup to the Iraq War, Bowling for Columbine about gun violence and... »

[Movie Review] A Christmas Carol

5 November 2009 3:52 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

If you don’t already know the story of A Christmas Carol by now, well… It might not be your fault, but it is an impressive feat. As one of the most well-known stories in the world, Charles Dickens’ 166-year-old story of redemption is one that has been adapted into countless plays, movies and television specials; including a Disney cartoon I fondly remember (with Scrooge McDuck playing the part of Ebenezer Scrooge, of course).

Even if you don’t know the story, surely you recognize elements of it. The grumpy Scrooge, the three Christmas ghosts, the poor family with a dying kid, the scary confrontation at a graveyard, the sickeningly sweet ending. It is the very definition of a classic. Scrooge, played by Jim Carrey, is a rich grinch desperately in need of learning the spirit of charity and giving embedded in Christmas. He does one Christmas Eve after a »

One Year Later: Celebrities Who Have Visited The Obama White House (Photos)

4 November 2009 6:12 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

The White House released its visitor log on Friday in an act of "transparency like you've never seen before." The list of 431 names only includes those visiting on official business, not personal guests of the first family. A statement also warns that some of the names are false positives (names that make you think of a well-known person but are actually someone else: Michael Jordan, William Ayers, Michael Moore, Jeremiah Wright, R. Kelly). So a few famous names are missing and some are misleading, but the Hollywood presence is still huge. As part of HuffPost's One Year Later series, here are some of the celebrities who have visited the Obama White House. Oprah and George Clooney Visited the Obama White House

Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney are among the A-list guests who’ve visited the White House since President Barack Obama and his family moved in last January. The Obama administration has released the names of 500 individuals (out of the reported tens of thousands) who’ve dropped by the current first family’s home, and other prominent figures on the list include Oscar-winner Denzel Washington, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, says MSNBC.com. Michael Jordan and Michael Moore visited as well -- but they're not the celebs those names are usually associated with, says the White House.

Sean Penn may film in Venezuela in the future. President Hugo Chavez told reporters he met with actor Sean Penn on Wednesday, and that the Oscar-winner is thinking of filming in his country. Chavez is a celebrity magnet and has entertained the company of Benicio del Toro, Courtney Love, Danny Glover, Naomi Campbell, Penn and Michael Moore. The Associated Press reveals that Oscar-winning actor Penn is contemplating a film based on a novel by Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier. The locale of this story about an anthropologist and a composer is centered in Venezuela's southern Orinoco river. Collapse Movie Trailer (The Best Reviewed “End is Near” Documentary of the Year?)

25 October 2009 6:31 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Bill Murray recently offered the following skepticism at a press junket, "I saw a guy talking about the end of the world a couple of years ago, and I haven't seen that either." Many notable critics feel that the new documentary entitled Collapse, from the well-regarded director behind American Movie and The Yes Men, more or less informs the world, Murray included, that the end in the form of total economic collapse is once again near. "No, this time it is. Really." Based on surface impressions, Collapse's message sounds not unlike Michael Moore's recent Capitalism: A Love Story, which is a turn off, considering that it's rather obvious things are currently effed in America (the job market, health care, pundit-hungry media, two aimless "wars," startling deficit, for starters). One need not prescribe to "doomist" theorizing in order to wave a frightened fist online, though multi-thousands do on a daily basis. »

Michael Moore makes a living speaking truth to power, and an assortment of other filmmakers are lining up to speak truth to him. “There's actually more films made attacking me than films I've made,” he tells the Wall Street Journal . The Yes Men Fix the World

23 October 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

In 2003’s The Yes Men, Mike Bonanno and Andy Bichlbaum set up a website mimicking and lampooning the World Trade Organization, a corporation they oppose.  Their website, however, was mistaken for the real thing and they were invited to speak at important meetings and functions as representatives for the Wto.  They decided to use the opportunity to hold a mirror up and show the corporations their own greed and hopefully make a difference.  Now, with The Yes Men Fix the World, a sequel of sorts, they have gotten even better at making people think they represent companies they do not.

The Yes Men take a page from Sasha Baron Cohen and two pages from Michael Moore to turn in their elaborate pranks on large corporations.  In the first of four hoaxes shown in this film, Andy gets invited to go on the BBC as a spokesperson for Dow Chemical.  The »

Kanye West Still Hasn't Addressed His Death Rumor, But He Should Go On 'The Colbert Report'

22 October 2009 9:34 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Yesterday, the Internet exploded with the rumor that Kanye West had died (possibly in a car accident). Of course, this is not the case — it turns out West was the latest victim of a death rumor on the Internet. The rumor was immediately refuted by West's girlfriend Amber Rose via Twitter. "This 'Rip Kanye West' topic is not funny and it's not true!" she wrote. "It's in extreme poor taste to have that as a trendy topic. It's totally disrespectful to make up a story like this we're all human ... and we all make mistakes and to say someone died cuz of a mistake is ridiculous. You wouldn't want someone to say that about you."

But West himself hasn't responded to the rumor himself. Though he has updated his blog several times, he has not mentioned it there. And his spokesperson hasn't made a statement either. Though it hardly seems »

Box Office Blues (And Golden Browns)

21 October 2009 9:31 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I almost never cover box office here for these reasons:

It's covered so extensively elsewhere you'd think it was the most important thing about movies. It's not.$$$ has zero correlation to quality. And sometimes even not that much correlation to perceived quality (Witness how many people flock to sequels of films they didn't love, expecting not much at all. I'm guilty here, too... I've dubbed it The Blockbuster Loop)

Covering it only adds to the problem of 'the tipping factor', wherein something that is successful becomes even more successful (even if total crap) merely because people see the success and intuit that they're supposed to be into it (Twilight, anyone?).

I find it nearly impossible to manipulate the masses to my way of thinking. Curses! They wear deflector shields to ward off my psychic will. If I ever find a chink in those shields, suddenly everyone will be buying tickets »

[Exclusive Interview] Michael Moore

18 October 2009 1:02 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

About two weeks ago I had the chance to cover the red carpet for a screening of Michael Moore’s new film Capitalism: A Love Story. Thankfully, Mr. Moore was willing to give everyone there an interview. While this interview is rather brief, it was still quite an honor to talk to one of the most relevant and entertaining filmmakers working today.

Canadian Beacon is one of my favorite comedies and I was wondering if you’d consider going back to feature films? Michael Moore: Oh yes, I probably will. In fact my next film may be a feature film. Can you talk a little bit about it? Micahel Moore: No, I’m working on it right now so I can’t talk about it. Thanks for your time and great job on Bill Maher the other night. Michael Moore: (laughs) Thanks, I went all HBO on them at the end there. »

M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Devil’ Headed for the Screen [Updated]

16 October 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

[Update: We've now have a synopsis about the plot of Devil]

M. Night Shyamalan is one of those divisive directors in Hollywood - not because of politically controversial film topics like say Michael Moore, or over-the-top art house edge like Lars von Trier. He doesn’t even make it into the mainstream news media spouting off-hand remarks, or getting picked up while driving drunk, flinging anti-Semitic racial slurs. No, Shyamalan divides audiences into those that love his work and those that don’t because of his story telling; there’s no real fence-riding when it comes to his films.

Shyamalan’s next story, Devil, a horror-thriller, is being backed by Universal and directed by brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) with actor Chris Messina (Julie and Julia) attached to star. Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night) wrote the script based on Shyamalan’s story, the details of which are being kept a tightly guarded secret. I’m not really sure »
