The Lost Generation: A Decade of Teen Movies

16 December 2009 12:31 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The best teen movies reflect modern youth culture and alter it—they transform the vernacular, fashion, and the trajectory of the genre itself. They are original and smart (even mid-dick joke). Some are raunchy comedies, some are stark dramas, some defy classification, but all are unflinchingly honest (even mid-dick joke). Though they very seldom win awards, the best teen movies usually compel repeat viewings and somehow seem to intuit the needs and tastes of generations to come. Here are 15 of the decade’s most memorable explorations of all the intrinsic charms and traumas of teendom. Most likely to influence future filmmakers: Brick (2005) Writer-director Rian Johnson overhauled the teen genre, the noir, and blew everyone’s mind by setting this brilliant whodunit in a high school. The dialogue is tight and heavily stylized, borrowing from 1940s hardboiled slang, and the engrossing detective plot is fueled by all of the mean and dirty social politics of high school. Most »

Broadway Vet Donna Murphy Goes Villainous In Rapunzel

10 December 2009 8:54 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Where most non-Pixar animated movies these days turn to the biggest possible celebrities for their voice cast-- I'm looking at you, Shark Tale-- Disney turned the tide recently by casting Broadway veteran Anika Noni Rose as the lead character in The Princess and the Frog, a gambit that, based on reviews, has turned out beautifully. Now Disney is trying it again, casting two-time Tony winner Donna Murphy as the villain in Rapunzel, an animated retelling of the fairy tale starring Mandy Moore as the long-locked heroine and Chuck's Zachary Levi as the rescuing bandit. THR writes that Murphy's character is Mother Gothel, a witch who keeps Rapunzel prisoner in the tower. To be honest, the evil witch part sounds way more fun that goody-two-shoes Rapunzel anyway. »

On Wednesday, MTV News published my annual "Best Songs of the Year" column, where I picked my favorite tunes of the past 12 months. And, just like in previous years, most of you seemed to disagree with those picks.

We got tons of comments from readers, the overwhelming majority of which seemed to fall into one of two categories: "Where's Britney?" Or "Where's Eminem?" See, neither Ms. Spears nor Mr. Mathers made my list, omissions that were attributed to everything from bribery to a massive, inter-corporate conspiracy designed to keep either artist down (while subsequently propping up Jay-z or Miley or Gaga). Of course, we also got plenty of other comments too, everything from "You should be fired" to my personal favorite, "I haven't heard of half these artists before."
