Directors Guild President Paris Barclay has announced the TV, documentary and commercial nominees for this year's DGA Awards. “The spectrum of directorial excellence across today's nine television and documentary categories is revelatory for the breadth and depth in what each of these women and men have directed – from 30-second commercials to multi-hour miniseries,” said Barclay in a statement. “As fellow filmmakers, we’re inspired by the quality, imagination and creativity demonstrated by these impressive nominees; as audience members, we’re incredibly fortunate to enjoy the fruits of their labors. Our congratulations to all of the nominees.” First-time nominees include Jodie Foster ("House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black"), Cary Fukunaga ("True Detective"), Mike Judge ("Silicon Valley"), Lisa Cholodenko ("Olive Kitteridge"), Michael Wilson ("The Trip to Bountiful") and Jill Soloway ("Transparent"). Winners will be announced Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles at a ceremony hosted by Jane Lynch.

After making it big with live-action web series based on the Halo and Mortal Kombat video game franchises, Machinima has now turned to comic books for new programming.
The online entertainment player paired with director BenDavid Grabinski and producer Adrian Askarieh and has a cool 10-minute pilot based on Enormous, debuting today (March 20) on the Machinima website, which you can see below.
Enormous is set in a post-apocalyptic world after a cataclysmic ecological event unleashes giant monsters that destroy human civilization, putting mankind at the bottom of the food chain (and under their massive feet).
The busy filmmakers took a few minutes out of their busy schedules to chat with us about this “big little” pilot. Askarieh phoned from Berlin, where he is on set shooting the Hitman reboot, Agent 47. “We are in our fourth week, and we just wrapped for the day, so I’m ready to talk about Enormous!

The day has finally arrived! No, not the first day of spring (although we're happy to see that also); what we're talking about is the debut of Machinima's live-action pilot for an adaptation of Enormous, in which the world as we know it has ended.
The pilot/short film is based on the critically-acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. Written by Tim Daniel and drawn by Mehdi Cheggour, Enormous tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world in which massive insect-like beasts have taken over the world and humans are now the bottom of the food chain.
The creative minds of director BenDavid Grabinski (short film Cost of Living), writer Andre Ovredal (Trollhunter), and producer Adrian Askarieh (Hitman, Agent 47) have taken Enormous from the page to the screen, and you can watch the video below.

One narrative mechanism that offers the potential for the audience to feel truly transported into another world, familiar or unfamiliar as it may be, is having someone in the story to represent our perspective. This is an old trick of fiction: insert a Nick Carraway-type person for other characters to confide in, and through these interactions we are able to learn about other, more important or interesting characters who are eager to spill their guts to someone who will just sit there and listen to them for a minute. They come alive knowing they have an audience.
Granted, they typically don’t know how large an audience they have, since in the case of a movie, the talkative character’s audience will be as large as the number of people watching the movie. In the context of the story, the moments between the speaker and the listener enjoy a state...

Son and namesake of an illustrious country singer, Bobby Bare Jr. made the differences between him and his patriarch very clear when his band released an album on Immortal Records (Korn, Incubus). Since then he’s been furiously touring as a solo artist, rocking with various backing bands and making just enough money to keep the roof over his family’s head. “Don’t Follow Me (I’m Lost)” chaperones a series of concerts in 2010 (timed with the release of the artist’s A Storm, A Tree, My Mother's Head) while providing a succinct idea of Bobby’s character and musical career. Mostly, though, it deals with the musician’s struggle to continue his modestly successful creative career while juggling his responsibilities as a parent, with four kids and a new wife at home. Shot in a chaotic mix of different film speeds and stocks, William Miller’s documentary is...

It's no secret I love Almost Famous. In my opinion it's one of the few perfect films that exist. I know not everyone agrees and I certainly know not everyone agrees with my assessment of Kate Hudson's performance in that flick. She is, astonishingly good. Charismatic, sly, heartbreaking and raw. When that film came out I fell as much in love with Kate Hudson as young William Miller did with Penny Lane. The problem is I confused the actress for the role. In the intervening years, Hudson has proven herself time and time again to be a featherweight when it comes to acting. She has never again come close to whatever magic it is she tapped into when playing Penny Lane. Was the role just that perfect for her? Was Cameron Crowe just that good at drawing out whatever talent she has buried under all that McConoughorror? Who can say?...

Chicago – As the Oscars are almost upon us, several studios have been releasing Academy Award juggernauts of the past like “Raging Bull,” “Dances With Wolves,” and “The Color Purple.” Consider the re-release of “Almost Famous,” in its “Untitled” form exclusively at Best Buy, an ugly duckling cousin of these releases. Yes, it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay (well-deserved) but it missed out on nods it should have received in multiple other categories. Yes, I’m still angry. “Almost Famous” is one of the best films of the ’00s and has held up beautifully since its release just over a decade ago.
Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
“Almost Famous” is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale about rock ‘n’ roll, groupies, the road, and why people fall in love with music in the first place. It is an assured, complex, brilliant film that features career-best work by Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup along with...

Almost Famous is a movie that follows the formula of a rock 'n roll film, and yet it plays out in a completely original way. By tweaking some of the genre's classic tropes, Cameron Crowe has made a movie that plays to his strengths as a filmmaker and a writer. Crowe is a former writer for Rolling Stone magazine, and he knows the music industry. His musical knowledge and his experience with rock bands allow him to write characters that go beyond the horny groupie, the self-centered front man, and the wide-eyed kid having his first taste of success.
In Almost Famous, William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a bright teenager who still lacks practical knowledge of life. His protective mother Elaine (Frances McDormand) wants to see him graduate high school and go on to law school without getting caught up in sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Unfortunately for Elaine,...

I know it's stupid, and I know that I'm not supposed to care about the goddamn personal lives of celebrities, but when certain celebrities divorce -- or break up, as in the case of Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins -- I lose a little faith in romance. I woke up this morning to news that Cameron Crowe -- my all-time favorite director -- and his longtime wife, Nancy Wilson, were divorcing. Man, that's soul crushing. Granted, I know absolutely nothing about their marriage, but I've seen Crowe's films, and he's a real goddamn romantic. If you've ever listened to the Say Anything director's commentary, you'd know, too, that Crowe was absolutely smitten with his wife. Plus, Wilson -- who is part of the 80's female rock band, Heart, which recently announced they were reforming -- has provided a lot of music for Crowe's soundtracks over the years. Good music, too.

It probably isn't a bad gig, being married to Joel Coen; it's sure worked out well for Frances McDormand. As the Coen Brothers made their directorial debut with Blood Simple back in 1984, she stepped in front of the camera for her first time and proved just as vital to making that steely noir work as the directors were. The partnership only became increasingly rewarding as she went on to star in four more of their films, rightfully earning the greatest acclaim -- not to mention an Academy Award -- for her turn as pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson in Fargo.
She would earn a subsequent nomination as William Miller's overbearing mother in Almost Famous(pictured), and while I very much adore both that movie and her performance in it, I'd argue that she was able to show slightly more range that year in her other film,...

I'm really into the history old school gangsters during the 1920's and 1930's. Unfortunately I thought Michael Mann dropped the ball on Public Enemy, the story of John Diliger.
