This needlessly incoherent thriller treats its convoluted nonsense with grave seriousness. It's mawkish, maudlin, and tongue-tied — countless scenes end with characters excusing themselves to go to bed, and you may want to join them. Julianne Michelle plays Samantha, a sulky, traumatized young woman who returns to her hometown after 14 years in foster care to solve her mother's murder, a childhood incident she witnessed but has since blocked out.
She suspects her recovering alcoholic father (weepy, weary-eyed John Savage) is the culprit, yet she inexplicably moves back in with him. Meanwhile, she begins working for a former politician turned funeral home entrepreneur (a game Steven Bauer), an old friend of her mother's whom she enlists as her sleuthing accomplice. But Bau...

When her sister Lara (Mischa Barton) tries to investigate the mystery of what happened, she moves into the same apartment and encounters the odd neighbors in the building, including an eerie nine-year old girl who seems to somehow know the real reason for Janet’s fall. Director: Michael Taverna. Review: Adam Wing. Arriving approximately fifteen years too late, Apartment 1303 is a terrifying shocker based on the highly acclaimed (that’s what it says here) J-horror film of the same name. I say terrifying but what I really mean is terrifyingly bad. I say shocker but what I really mean is shocking. Starring Mischa Barton (The Oc, The Sixth Sense), Rebecca De Mornay (The Hand that Rocks the Cradle) and Julianne Michelle (Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps), Apartment 1303 is released through Koch Media this June, available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD. I was starting to think the curse of the J-horror remake had passed, but this 2012 offering is further proof that you can’t keep a dead girl down. Hollywood will continue to raid the vaults of Asian cinema over the next few years, with remakes of Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance looking most likely to offend,...
