The Television Academy’s board of governors has voted vice chairman Frank Scherma to become its new chairman and CEO, a post he will take over from the outgoing Hayma Washington. The election was held Thursday night at a board meeting at which the TV Academy’s annual officer elections were also held.
Scherma, the president of RadicalMedia whose producer credits include music documentaries, Errol Morris’ The Fog of War, Broadway’s Shrek the Musical and IFC TV’s Stan Against Evil, was the lone candidate to step forward by the deadline when Washington said in October he would not seek a second term. Washington was the first African-American leader in the organization’s 70-year history.

With experience across film and television, Howard Meltzer is a casting vet who’s worked his way up to becoming a governor of the Television Academy’s casting peer group. With the rise of digital and streaming media, it’s certainly an interesting time to work as a casting representative in television—but to him, that doesn’t mean his process has to change. Stepping into the audition room is always going to be the same. As he works to increase the awareness and appreciation for what casting directors contribute to each individual project and the industry as a whole, he still looks for the same qualities in his talent: He wants the best actor for the role and wants each person who auditions to get the part. How has casting’s place in the industry changed since you started working as a CD? When I started in the industry,...

The Emmy Awards are Hollywood’s only major awards show that recognizes the art of casting with a statue—and four of them at that. We watch and follow along as actors in anything from leading to guest roles take home trophies, and on television’s most important night, the casting directors who put them in those roles have a chance at one of their own. Even the casual TV watcher might be able to devise a brilliant performance, and likewise understand how an actor comes to deserve an Emmy. The way a casting director does, though, proves a little more perplexing. As the profile of casting rises and more people become familiar with casting directors’ contribution to TV, film, theater, and more, it’s still not easy to extract what makes an award-worthy casting job—as opposed to what makes simply a notable performance. To help answer that question,...

While women’s movements including #MeToo and Time’s Up grab headlines and Color of Change works designs to empower African-Americans, the Television Academy hosted a discussion on the state of Asian-American representation in Hollywood Wednesday.
Although panelists including Jeannie Mai, Kulap Vilaysack, Veena Sud and Howard Meltzer, Csa, and moderator Miguel Santos of Myx TV, acknowledged strides toward inclusion — primarily citing ABC’s family comedy “Fresh Off The Boat” and the upcoming film “Crazy Rich Asians” — the consensus was that such projects should only be the beginning.
“Just speaking for myself, when I’m complimented for being Vietnamese-American in television — the only one — that doesn’t make me feel happy, that makes me feel really lonely, actually,” Mai said.
Mai shared that in her 15-year career she has often had to kick open doors for herself, even as recently as 2013 when she landed a spot as co-host on “The Real.

The trend to capitalize on known brands doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Following the successful reboots of “Hawaii Five-0,” “Full House” (now “Fuller House”), “The X-Files,” and “Gilmore Girls,” studios and networks don’t seem to be slowing down with the reboots. Although “Charmed” fans will have to keep waiting for a second chance at another life—the witchy prequel’s pilot was pushed back, as was “The Lost Boys”—there will still be plenty of familiar themes and worlds this season. In the vein of the recently axed “Girl Meets World” (the progeny-based byproduct of Cory and Topanga from “Boy Meets World”) and “Fuller House” (Tanner family 2.0) comes the second round of “That’s So Raven.” This time, the nostalgia focuses on Raven Baxter‘s life as a divorced mother of two.
