Comedian Frankie Boyle berates publishers for producing 'crap' celebrity memoirs. Meanwhile his own is a bestseller
Rebecca Adlington, Kerry Katona, Susan Boyle and the Queen can all breathe sighs of relief. Frankie Boyle (no relation to Susan) has a new target: publishers. The Glaswegian comedian has attacked them for creating a degraded books market teeming with celebrity memoirs – which may seem a bit rich given that he's just written one of his own.
"I never really followed publishing until I wrote this book," said Boyle over coffee in the bar of his posh hotel in Covent Garden, "but what strikes me is there aren't many publishers you'd confuse with leading philosophical thinkers of the day.
"Right now if you read the Bookseller there are publishers moaning about how terrible celebrity biographies now are. How they're all badly written and say nothing. It's a fair point, but don't they realise that »

Simon Cowell's haircut has topped a poll for the 'Worst Celebrity Hair' of 2009. In the annual Brylcreem survey, the TV judge's short back and sides was voted worse than Russell Brand's shaggy mane and Gordon Brown's side-parting. Meanwhile, Peter Andre picked up the gong for top celebrity haircut, reports the Mirror. Also included in the list were Formula 1 champion Jenson Button and Hollywood heartthrob Robert Pattinson. TV presenter Declan Donnelly's classic cut earned him fifth spot in the best bouffant list, but his jungle pal Ant McPartlin rounded out the worst haircut top ten. The survey of 3,000 people »

Whatever you think of Gino D'Acampo, the real rodents in the celebrity jungle are running ITV
It's not difficult to imagine that this all might have happened on purpose. That the cooking and consumption of a rat on the set of I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! was deliberately organised so that the protagonists – Stuart Manning and Gino "King of the Jungle" D'Acampo – would eventually end up in jail. That the incarceration of a chef and an interior designer under Australian animal cruelty laws would be just the launchpad needed for a new ITV venture: I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! Oh, Sorry, You Can't Because I'm Not Up for Parole for Another Six Months! In an odd way, it would all make sense.
In another sense, the prevailing one, it's bonkers. Bonkers in a thoroughly modern way: a way that combines banal celebrity with corporate »

We faced extinction 160,000 years ago – then woolly mammoths came to the rescue
One of the problems with climate change is getting people to engage, and then keeping them engaged. I mean, we all know it's happening, and why it's happening – and that we're all buggered unless we do something Pdq. It may even be too late already. But how do you keep it interesting?
Tony Robinson's cunning plan is to look into the past, to see how our early
ancestors dealt with fl uctuations in temperature. In Man On Earth (Channel 4) he travels to 160,000 years ago, when it was bloody freezing, even in Africa where the fi rst people lived. One of
these people was a chap called Herto, whose skull survives today. It might have provided Tony with a little Yorick moment (Alas, poor Herto) had he been in comedy mode. He's not, though; he's got his Time Team hat on, »

Malcolm has been spinning further and further out of control. So where does he go from here?
Spoiler Alert: This weekly blog is for those who are watching The Thick of It series three. Don't read on if you haven't seen episode seven
The king is dead. Long live the king?
Throughout this series Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), the government's press chief, has spun further and further out of control.
A couple of weeks ago, his opposite number, Stewart Pearson, responded to one characteristic rant (the one about tracking down and murdering a radio phone-in caller) by saying Malcolm sounded "quite mad". The note of pity in his voice was as damning as the jibe itself. Last week hapless departmental press officer Terri Coverley took him to task – rightly – for flaws in his PR strategy.
And this week an old nemesis from Malcolm's past returns: Steve Fleming (David Haig), the Pm's fixer, »

Geordie duo among a host of new names added to 2010 edition, including Anna Friel, Matt Lucas and David Walliams
The inexorable rise of Ant and Dec continues. Not content with chart success, primetime ubiquity and encouraging celebrities to devour Australian jungle fauna, the cheeky Geordie duo have found their way into Who's Who.
Declan Joseph Oliver Donnelly and Anthony McPartlin, as they are more properly known, are joined in the 2010 edition by another double act, Matt Lucas and David Walliams. While Lucas lists his hobbies as "eating crisps, watching football, eating chocolate, watching stage musicals, sleeping, eating crumpets", Walliams cites the love of swimming that propelled him across the Channel three years ago. Fellow comedian, actor and author Ricky Gervais is also among the 1,000-odd new entries.
The Hollywood A-list is represented by Seven co-stars William Bradley Pitt and Morgan PorterfieldFreeman, with the British actors Anna Friel, David Morrissey and »

The four remaining celebrities have taken part in bushtucker trial favourite Hell Hill in an attempt to win dinner for their last supper together. The campmates were given three wetsuits and rubber boots prior to the challenge. Kim Woodburn was unable to join in for medical reasons, but decided to go along as their cheerleader. The contestants were instructed by Ant and Dec that they had to each carry a star through a river infested with snakes and large eels, clamber up a water-logged and slippery hill, all before placing it on a post. Each celebrity had to keep hold of their star until the trial was over to win a meal for camp. After a brief discussion, Jimmy White decided that he would take the closest post, Justin Ryan would take the middle, while Gino D'Acampo would go for the long shot. "If you don't get those two stars, »

Sabrina Washington and Stuart Manning won only three stars out of a possible seven on their bushtucker trial together. Preparing to compete in her first challenge, Washington declared that she had been "dying to do one". The two were then told by Ant and Dec that the trial was called Buzz Off, with Manning having to direct Washington from a hive while she navigated her way across an assault course to release the stars. Attached to the former Mis-Teeq singer's helmet were two antenna that she had to avoid touch aligning the copper rail. If they connected, Manning would receive an electric shock. If she touched the rail three times, they would lose the star and have to move on to the next. The pair got off to a bad start, Washington only taking a few steps before (more) »

Joe Bugner has become the sixth contestant to leave I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!. The former boxer had to exit the competition after losing the jungle jail trial to fellow celebrity Stuart Manning. The pair learnt yesterday that as they had received the fewest public votes, they would have to compete to save their place in the competition. When they got to the jungle jail, hosts Ant and Dec told them that to win the challenge, they must find an escape hatch and torch. They would then have to shine their torch around their jail cell to find three combinations, one of which would open the hatch. The pair would then need to (more) »

Jimmy White had to overcome a personal phobia during his first bushtucker trail. Assigned to tackle the Scareway To Hell task, the former snooker star was told that the challenge involved climbing along several high beams towards a series of hanging stars. As he negotiated the walkways, he had to smash the stars with a hammer to release the ribbons inside. Each star was worth one meal and there were nine stars in total. However, the stars were on a timer and would drop to the valley below if he didn't reach them in time. There was also a twist when it came to the final star. Unlike the others, White would not have to smash the star but jump off the platform and grab it. Before the challenge, hosts Ant and Dec asked the 47-year-old if he has a fear of heights, (more) »

Kim Woodburn and Joe Bugner teamed up once more for the latest bushtucker trial. They said: "We've got some news - since Colin left the show this morning, the public have been voting for a special bushtucker trial, a drinking game called The Jungle Arms." Justin Ryan, still upset over McAllister's departure, replied: "Oh please God, no, please no." Ant and Dec then revealed that the public had elected to see another pairing of Woodburn and Bugner. The glamour model admitted her stint on British reality TV show 'I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!' had made her reconsider her future and realise she wanted to be alone.
She told presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly said: “Being in the jungle has made me think. Alex? Well that’s another thing. I have done a lot of reflection. It’s best on my own. I realised I want to be on my own. I don’t want a relationship. As soon as I came out I decided I am not with him. “People will think it’s harsh. But a lot of things have happened.” After quitting the camp, the first person Katie saw was close friend Michelle Heaton - a panellist on spin-off show 'I'm A Celebrity...
