Pen Densham is the director behind The Kiss starring exotic beauty Joanna Pacula, ever so wholesome teen superstar Meredith Salenger, the legendary Jan Rubes and feature directing superstar Shawn Levy (Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum, and Date Night to name a few). The Kiss deals with the title smooch being passed down from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, for poor little Meredith Salenger she is next in line to receive this deadly kiss from her aunt, Joanna Pacula. Initially a flop when it first came out, The Kiss has found an ever growing following over the past few years due to the film being released at the height of the DVD craze. We had the chance to ask Pen Densham a few questions about The Kiss. Here is what he had to say.
So who is Pen Densham and what are you all about?
Wow – Not an easy question.

If a god is willing to prevent evil, but not able, then he is not omnipotent. If he is able, but not willing, then he must be malevolent. If he is neither able or willing then why call him a god? Why else do bad things happen to good people?
There lies an odd purgatory for films like Franklyn. Written and directed by Gerald McMorrow as his full-length feature debut, it accomplishes a great deal using very little, but it's also something of a difficult chore to make it through the film. Filmed on a minimal budget of only $12 million, it's an ambitious, bizarre, atmospheric film that, without ruining it, will sound like a cryptic mess. And it is, but it's one that has a great deal of imagination and with the right dose of sheer curiosity, you'll find yourself unable to turn away from it, for fear of missing out on something potentially brilliant.

Who needs to watch a film when you can watch a head-trip? From across the pond comes Franklyn, England’s darker answer The Butterfly Effect if Tim Burton had directed it. Set in England and deep in imagination, Franklyn combines the bleakness of a gothic fantasy world with the bleakness of real life. Both lands are loosely bound by the narration of a masked vigilante from the fictitious Meanwhile City.
Not content with merely existing within several realms of reality, Franklyn features four storylines. Each storyline is filled with loss, regret, and desperation linking them together in a way they you’ll never guess and only discover in the end. Directed by Gerald McMorrow, Franklyn stars Ryan Phillippe as a man seeking revenge, Sam Riley as a man seeking a lost love, and Eva Green as a young woman seeking her mother’s attention through suicide. There’s not much...

The debut fantasy thriller from writer-director Gerald McMorrow, Franklyn, is up to pre-order on DVD. An urban fairytale based on a split narrative, between contemporary London, and the futuristic religion-dominated metropolis Meanwhile City. The story follows the fates of four lost souls; a detective, a mourning father, a heartbroken lover and a suicidal art student, divided by two parallel worlds that are soon to collide. Reviews on the film have been mixed, but Franklyn does offer something a little different from the usual Brit flick (i.e., it’s not a Gangster or Spy film), offering. Franklyn will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 22nd.

Moving between four disconnected storylines and two very different worlds, Franklyn is a confusing and seemingly aimless exercise in experimentation that nevertheless comes together in the end. Despite suffering a surfeit of cliches that will have any veteran viewer of British cinema rolling their eyes, its unusual premise and entertaining richness make it an enjoyable if undemanding movie.
The film opens in Meanwhile City, a dark CGI metropolis that despite some impressive gothic architecture owes a little too much to its cinematic predecessors to be truly impressive, populated by Gilliam-esque steampunk characters that similarly lack an original edge, top hats and yellow contact lenses being all the rage. A clip from "Franklyn" entitled "Relieved of Life" has been found. Less than a minute long, the snippet to the drama fantasy highlights on Ryan Phillippe's Preest while he ponders on what people will do when they are lost and on the crime and action for justice, revealing that he was about to kill a man who has robbed a young woman's life. The clip opens with a glimpse of Sam Riley's Milo and the aerial shot of Meanwhile City.

Franklyn may be Gerald McMorrow's debut feature film, but by the standards of even the most experienced of helmers it's an ambitious and visually-stunning movie, telling the tale of four disparate souls -- played by Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, Sam Riley & Bernard Hill - who find each other on their quest to find themselves. Part set in contemporary London and part set in a mythical fantasy world called Meanwhile City -- whose inhabitants must, by law, find religious faith even if that means taking washing machine instructions as their bible -- it's one of the most original and exciting...

Still have no idea what Gerald McMorrow’s “Franklyn” is really about? Don’t worry, you’re not the only one. The whole Preest/masked vigilante plot in a future London makes it sound like something along the lines of “V For Vendetta”, but then there’s a whole other angle set in contemporary London, and involves a jilted groom, a suicidal artist, and a priest in search of his missing son. Very confusing. The only thing I can be sure of is that it should look really, really good. And on a budget, no less. ScreenDaily.com has seen the movie, and says this about it: Set partially in a futuristic place called Meanwhile City, where the feeling is baroque Bladerunner, and also in present-day London, Franklyn’s biggest stumbling block is that it waits too long to connect the plotlines and pushes the viewer perhaps too hard for forbearance on the way there.

Masked vigilantes have been the in thing for some time now but one look at Gerald McMorrow's Franklyn should tell you that this isn't your average superhero saga.Juxtaposing modern London with an an alternate equivalent called Meanwhile City, where the population live under the yoke of theocratic dictatorship, Ryan Phillipe prowls the streets in a headpiece that makes him look disturbingly like David Cronenberg in Nightbreed.Interested yet? Good. You can see the trailer here but, more importantly, you can scroll down and watch an exclusive making of featurette. The lovely Eva Green, the mere mention of whose name has us coming on all swoony, has signed up for Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf's first English-language film Womb. The actress joins Dr. Who's new Timelord, Matt Smith, for what could be cinema's first genetically-modified romance, in which she'll play a grieving widow who decides to clone her dead husband.Set in the near future, Womb will tackle the moral and ethical issues surrounding the human cloning. It's certainly punchy, controversial stuff, and represents another interesting choice for Green, who will shortly be appearing in a dual role (including one as a suicidal Goth) in Gerald McMorrow's dystopian fantasy Franklyn. That's followed by a role as a teacher in Cracks, a drama set at girls boarding school in the 1930s.Womb will take the beautiful Ms. Green to Germany where shooting is scheduled to start in March. ...

Gerald McMorrow’s Franklyn - potentially one very compelling mash up of noir and superhero tropes along the lines of a certain other superhero film currently caught up in legal strife - is a film we have been following here for nearly a year and a half now. A couple months back a very gritty version of a sales trailer popped up online but that one, frankly, looked like ass and the producers wasted no time slapping cease and desist orders on anyone sharing it. But now Franklyn is back and looking good. With the film releasing in the UK next month - surprisingly it does not yet seem to have a Us distributor - a proper trailer, in good resolution, is now available and looking tasty.

Look what you can do for only $12 million. With blockbuster budgets still spiraling out of control, along comes Franklyn, a neo-noir thrilla that not only has an arresting visual style, but also appears to have an intelligent, absorbing storyline, as well. And it cost $65 million less than Four Christmases.
For that price, writer-director Gerald McMorrow has grabbed Eva Green - and who wouldn't like to do that? - and Ryan Phillippe, and has created a futuristic setting called Meanwhile City that looks absolutely remarkable. And, for the record, this is a truly great trailer, exactly the kind of thing a small movie operating outside the system really needs to get the word out.

Nearly a year to the day since Todd mentioned this project which bafflingly replaced its cast of Ewan MacGregor, Paul Bettany and John Hurt with Sam Riley, Ryan Phillippe, and Bernard Hill. We haven't reported on Franklyn yet but I figured, since I just stumbled upon a couple of yet unseen images from the film, I'd bend your ears (or eyes as the case may be) a little and discuss a flick I'm really looking forward to seeing more from. Franklyn is an upcoming dystopian mystery-drama that makes great use of that neo-noir style we love so much around here. It is also the first feature by director Gerald McMorrow who made a stellar looking scifi short called Thespian X, that I'm also dying to see. The film stars Ryan Phillippe, Ava Green, Bernard Hill and Sam Riley in four interweaving stories that take place in a alternate reality world where there is no division between church and state. More specifically, the film is about Preest, a masked vigilante detective, searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic...

LONDON -- Newcomer Sam Riley, who lit up screens with his role in Anton Corbijn's "Control", is joining Ryan Phillippe and Eva Green for Gerald McMorrow's "Franklyn", the filmmakers said Thursday.
Produced by Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas through his Recorded Picture Co. banner, "Franklyn" marks the feature debut for writer-director McMorrow.
The project, set between the parallel worlds of contemporary London and the futuristic faith-dominated metropolis of Meanwhile City, begins shooting Monday in and around the capital.
"Franklyn" is backed by the U.K. Film Council's Premiere Fund to the tune of £1 million ($2 million), while Film 4 and equity backer Aramid have each contributed undisclosed sums toward the £6 million ($12.1 million) budget. International sales are being handled by HanWay Films.
The cast also includes Bernard Hill, Susannah York and Art Malik.
"Franklyn" is produced by Thomas and co-produced by Alexandra Stone and Nick O'Hagan. Recorded's Peter Watson serves as executive producer.
"We've had wonderful experiences working with first-time directors such as Jonathan Glazer and David Mackenzie to bring their talent to audiences around the world and we are very optimistic about Gerald's ability to make a powerful and attractive film," Thomas said.
