Interview by Nic Brown
What can you say about someone whose list of interests include horror movies, anime, video games, guns and bows, serial killers, and kung fu movies? Well if you’re talking about Nikki Kruex, you can say that you’re just scratching the surface of this actress, model, musician, paranormal investigator and artistic Jill-of-all-trades...
In fact if you visit her website, www.nikkihomicidek.ws, you’ll find a page for just about every aspect of the entertainment industry. Somehow Nikki still manages to find time for fun and when she does you may find her doing anything from shooting a crossbow to playing Grand Theft Auto. Of course with multiple film projects, a new album coming out soon and a paranormal investigation show just waiting to take off, you won’t find her relaxing much. Fortunately, Nic Brown managed to pin down this creative tornado long enough »

When August: Osage County, an astounding large-scale familial drama burst on Broadway, it trumpeted the arrival of Tracy Letts, who won the Pulitzer Prize. By contrast, his follow-up effort, Superior Donuts, is a quiet meditation on fathers and sons, hope and hopelessness. This round, Letts went smaller, more intimate. Though Donuts is expertly acted and genuinely touching, the plot is far more contrived. Now at the Music Box, Superior Donuts opens in a family-owned Chicago donut shop. The seedy neighborhood is quietly becoming gentrified, as evidenced by the nearby Starbucks. The shops owner, a tired hippie named Arthur (Michael McKean), is a study in resignation. A former draft dodger and son of Polish immigrants, his "old man" started the store, hoping his son would do better. Instead, Arthur fled the U.S. during the Vietnam War, and by the time he returns,... »

Yankees supporters were out in force last night, and a few Twitter-Wood citizens were right by the field uploading pics. Brody Stevens may have shot the most enviable of the day, apparently getting soon-to-be-mvp Hideki Matsui in the dugout before the game. Jeremy Piven caught another high-quality photo-op, though, standing with his fellow Chicagoan Brian Urlacher.
Poor John Favreau was stuck in the editing room for "Iron Man 2," though, which he noted on his account. Larry King, Eliza Dushku and other added their thoughts after Phillies finally went down. Check out all of their tweets, along with Brett Ratner's pic with Mariah Carey after wrapping her video and Andy Milonakis. They're all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 5, 2009.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.

Basically, the best movie in the history of the world is “Mrs. Doubtfire.” I mean, I like “good” movies, too (“This Is Spinal Tap,” “Being There,” “Annie Hall,” “Taxi Driver,” – what I’m trying to say is that I’m well-rounded and know enough about the art of filmmaking), but in the land of celluloid, only one feature film can be king. And that feature film clocks in at just over 120 minutes, most »

The Voodoo Music Experience just wrapped its 11th year, and volume-wise it goes to 11 (to borrow a phrase from Spinal Tap). Voodoo had an uphill climb, announcing its lineup on the weekend Michael Jackson died and fighting to change its date to Halloween for a New Orleans City Park extravaganza with George Clinton and and Kiss. In association with the Life is Art Foundation, this year's festival was full of eye-catching installations. Here are 10 of our photos from a weekend that included a full moon and Halloween, as we now segue into a Saints Game. Who Dat indeed. A wild thing in front of, appropriately enough, The Pogues. * * * Blue man walking *** Pirate photo shoot in front of glowing art installation *** Backlit tent with mysterious residents *** Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue bathed in light *** The Life Aquatic Welcomes You *** ** Ok Art installation shining across the lagoon *** Voodoo Artist... »

Curious George. Harold and the Purple Crayon. Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel. Classics each and every one. Call it a babysitter in a box or call it a great tool for educating your children, either way what we have on our hands here is 19 hours of story books new and old converted to a digital medium. Some of these genuinely are treasures reincarnated in an animated medium while others are newer stories that have yet to prove their heirloom mettle. However, your average tot won’t care as much about the legacy of a given story as they will about the presentation. A majority of the stories found on these 16 discs have received the full animation treatment from the humble illustration origins, but there are a few in the collection which are little more than scans of the pages being panned over by the camera. Dir: Charlyne Yi, Nick Jasenovec Cast: Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, Jake Johnson People are calling ‘Paper Heart’ a mockumentary; but that word doesn’t seem to do the film justice because it bears no resemblance or heritage whatsoever to Spinal Tap. ‘Paper Heart’ is really an honest study on the nature of ‘love’; it is a quirky docu-drama that blends narrative sequences with documentary footage, and weaves the two together so that they inform and affect each other. And if that doesn’t grab you, there are also some fantastic Gondry-esque animated sequences and original music from the poster boy of geek-chic, Michael Cera. Charlyne Yi, a comedienne from California, has always wanted to make a documentary about real love (as opposed to the “Julia Roberts/ English Patient/ sobbing-in-the-rain stuff”); but it was not until she approached friend and director Nick Jasenovec that ‘Paper Heart’ began to form as an idea. »

Chicago – The great “Anvil! The Story of Anvil” played to sold-out crowds earlier this year and completely rejuvenated the careers of the rock Gods that never were - Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner aka Anvil. Now this great movie is available on DVD and you shouldn’t let it go by unseen.
DVD Rating: 4.5/5.0
Displaying the same quirky charms as breakthrough documentary hits like “Spellbound,” “American Movie,” and “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” (but sharing subject in common more with “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster”), “Anvil” is simply a joy. The momentum that carried the documentary about Anvil lifted the band themselves. This was one of the few times where the phrase “jump on the bandwagon” seemed more than a little appropriate.
Anvil co-founders Robb Reiner (L) and Steve “Lips” Ludlow contemplate their band’s future in a scene from Sacha Gervasi’s feature documentary, Anvil! »

Theatergoers attending Superior Donuts in hopes of seeing another Tracy Letts play of the caliber of his award-winning August: Osage County will be sorely disappointed. It’s not really good and it’s not entirely bad; what it does manage to be is thoroughly mediocre.
The chief flaw with this production lies in its writing. Letts uses the central figure of burned-out draft dodger Arthur Przybyszewski, aptly played by Michael McKean, to act as the kingpin in a very weak commentary on America and the many races of people it is comprised of.

You can’t crush a man’s dreams, even if they are only to be the best air drummer in the world. That’s the premise in this Rocky-meets-Napoleon-Dynamite picture written and directed by and starring Ari Gold as the titular Power. He looks like a dorky Spike Jonze with a Members Only jacket and a perpetual sweatband. For some inexplicable reason they refuse to begin the film’s title with some sort of definite article. I assume they were going for a play on words, but that feels a little high-minded for this film. This movie is so chock full of quirk that none of the characters are even remotely believable. It’s geared towards the youth – kids and teens who thought the aforementioned Dynamite was hilarious and quoted it incessantly. It is also, a very clean film. The raciest thing in the entire film is the back of »

Your regular recapper, Margaret, had the night off, and I agreed to sub for one reason only: Benny Ninja. But even he couldn't save this episode from being as pathetic as Sundai pulling out the Cabbage Patch when asked to express sadness through dance. Season after season, we see contestants told that their dance backgrounds actually hurt their modeling. But as guest (5'6″) judge Josie Maran pointed out at panel, dancers spend their lives looking in the mirror — so they should know their angles. Foolishly, I thought this teach might reveal the difference between good and bad dance influence, but no. »

See an exclusive clip as well as the trailer from Variance Films' "Adventures of Power," starring Ari Gold, Michael McKean, Jane Lynch, Chiu Chi Ling, Shoshannah Stern and Adrian Grenier. Ari Gold directs the comedy which finds limited venues on October 9th. When hard times hit a small mining town, Power (writer-director Gold) doesn’t wish for riches; he only wishes that he’d learned to play drums. But his father (McKean) could never afford to buy him a drum set, so Power has embraced the next best thing: air drumming. Tired of the constant ridicule, and with nothing but a few dollars, some breakfast cereal, and the support of his Aunt Joanie (Lynch), Power sets off across the country to the “paradise” »

Tired of the constant ridicule, and with nothing but a few dollars, some breakfast cereal, and the support of his Aunt Joanie (Jane Lynch), Power sets off across the country to the “paradise” of Newark, where an underground air drumming crew has invited him to join their team. But as the big air drumming competition looms, so does a rival—multi-millionaire drummer Dallas H. (Adrien Grenier), who thinks air drumming is an abomination and seeks to destroy Power and his crew. It sounds absurd -- and it is. I know that I had my differences with this film when I reviewed it at Sundance two years »

With Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day) directing, the fine Abbott & Costello pairing of Jack Black and Michael Cera in the lead roles, a loaded cast of bit players (David Cross, Hank Azaria, Oliver Platt, McLovin), and a clever Old Testament premise, Year One (Universal) seemed about as close to a sure thing as comedies get. Alas, this is why comedies are never a sure thing: There are gags-a-plenty in this disastrous goof on history, but an alarmingly low hit-to-miss ratio… This is not Spinal Tap, but the first-rate documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil (VH1 Films) has earned unavoidable comparisons to ... »

Before you dismiss this aging-rocker underdog tale as just another Spinal Tap, give it a closer look and you’ll see a heartwarming and inspiring story about two guys who can’t imagine not pursuing their dreams of stardom despite years of evidence that they shouldn’t. You probably have never heard of this band, even though it’s 1982 album was a thrash-metal landmark that set the speed for bands to follow: Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth. But while those bands went on to massive success in the ‘80s, it never happened for these guys—though it should have, as musicians like Lars Ulrich and Slash attest in the doc. Instead, now in their 50s, they hold delivery jobs and play gigs with few attendees. Even so, you’ll still find yourself...

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Oscar-winning filmmaker and activist James Lecesne's decision to bring a production of the Off-Broadway musical "Once on This Island" to the storm-ravaged city of New Orleans was both obvious and inspired, with an extra layer of resonance provided in the casting of local kids affected firsthand by the disaster. Captured by director Hilla Medalia, this documentary takes us behind the scenes of the production to follow 12 young actors »
