British classical stage actor, best remembered for his intense, highly
flamboyant portrayal of "Mercutio" in Franco Zeffirelli's film version of
Romeo and Juliet (1968). He was nominated for a BAFTA for this supporting role.
At age 20 he found his first stage work, spending three seasons with
the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool.
Joined the National Theatre Company of Great Britain in 1966.
