It’s been 30 years since Alex Proyas’ dark superhero film, The Crow, first arrived. To mark the occasion, the film is coming back to theaters for two nights only.
The theatrical re-release arrives as part of the “Scream Greats Series” by Paramount Scares and Fangoria. Specifically, The Crow will be shown at participating Cinemark locations on May 29th and 30th. Tickets and local listings can be found on Cinemark’s website.
Along with the original Brandon Lee-starring film, the upcoming re-release will also show audiences bonus content, including production designer Alex McDowell revisiting the 1994 film to discuss its design.
All of this, of course, comes as a new remake of the film by director Rupert Sanders is approaching. Starring Bill Skarsgård and FKA twigs, the new version is due in theaters on August 23rd via Lionsgate.

We recently heard that Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights to the reboot of the classic film The Crow (get it Here), which was released by Miramax back in 1994. Before Miramax acquired it, The Crow had originally been set up at Paramount. They decided to let go of it due to the controversy surrounding the on-set death of star Brandon Lee and the amount of violence in the film. So when Paramount acquired Miramax back in 2020, gaining the rights to The Crow in the process, it was like the film had gone full circle. It came back to Paramount. Recently, cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, mentioned a 4K restoration of The Crow would be on the Paramount Plus streaming service soon. While it hasn’t hit streaming yet, Blu-Ray.com announced that the 4K Blu-ray is set to come out on May 7th to mark the film’s 30th anniversary.

Zack Snyder's 2013 film "Man of Steel" is a retelling of the Superman origin story. As with the 1978 Richard Donner film "Superman," "Man of Steel" begins on the distant planet of Krypton which is nearly due for its apocalyptic destruction. The scientist and scholar Jor-El (Russell Crowe) pleas with his planet's government to do something about it, warning that the end is nigh. They refuse him. At the same time, a military coup is underway at the hands of the violent General Zod (Michael Shannon). Things are not looking good for the planet. Jor-El, wanting to save his infant son from the planet's destruction, loads the baby Kal-El into a rocket and launches him toward an unknown planet called Earth. It's a pretty well-known piece of trivia that Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster loosely modeled their character's story after Moses in the book of Exodus. Instead of being sent down a river,...

"Man of Steel" may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is arguably the ultimate blueprint for a modern iteration of Superman. Zack Snyder retold Kal-El's origin story on the big screen, borrowing the bleaker tone of Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy while remaining faithful to the source material. Henry Cavill portrayed a young Superman still acclimating to an environment that was hostile to him in nearly every direction. A beacon of hope clouded by the morally gray beliefs of his parents, Superman was a complex character in a complicated world. Finding that balance between adhering to the iconography of the character and grounding him began with designing the symbol in the center of Superman's chest.
The Superman suit in "Man of Steel" is special for a variety of reasons. From the comic-accurate color scheme to the embedded Kryptonian lettering, the film featured a textured costume that felt lived-in and honored previous iterations.

When Steven Spielberg was preparing to make his 2002 sci-fi film "Minority Report," an adaptation of the 1956 novella by Philip K. Dick, he wanted to ensure that the future world of 2054 seemed plausible from a technological standpoint. The story takes place after the founding of a futuristic Pre-Crime unit that uses a trio of psychics to predict when someone is going to commit murder. Thanks to the predictions, police can rain people's homes before they have even committed a crime and imprison them for it. It's a dystopian setup, but the system does, perhaps tragically, seem to work. The only victims are the psychics who have to live in a tank of fluid 24 hours a day.
According to a 2002 article in the Washington Post, Spielberg gathered a cadre of tech experts and futurists to brainstorm what 2054 might look like from a practical perspective. The team wrote out an 80-page Bible that...

In traditional filmmaking, once a script is written, the director and department heads break it down and figure out the costs and logistics of production. But if the screenwriter collaborates during the creative process with key crew members, the entire production can benefit.
Such collaboration offers the prospect of help on many fronts. For example, rather than pore over details of period dress, a writer can talk to a costume designer, who can aid in the research. Or, if the script calls for a spaceship to land on an alien planet, the writer can confab with a production designer who’s well versed in extraterrestrial visuals.
One director who’s a big proponent of such teamwork is Steven Spielberg. Mark Scruton, who served as supervising art director on Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” credits the director with communicating exactly what he wanted and instructing his key crew to thrash it out.

With the best part of $10bn banked for his movies across his career, Tom Hanks remains one of the biggest and most interesting movie stars on the planet. We don’t go to the cinema much, because we hate people. We also don’t go because there’s always the risk of accidentally going to see the wrong film. It's not helped by the fact that there's no way of telling until it’s too late, because there are no bloody opening credits on lots of modern films. And by the time you do realise, you’ve eaten all your popcorn and you can’t be bothered to move.
The movies on this list won’t give you that problem. These opening credits are perfect scene setters for the movies that follow, so you won’t have to worry about awkward popcorn wasting moments. It's not a top 50, rather a selection of 50 interesting credits sequences,...

Check out this behind the scenes featurette for Man of Steel on the modernization and re-imagining of Superman with commentary from producer Charles Roven, screenplay writer David S. Goyer, producer Deborah Snyder, Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/ Kal-El), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), production designer Alex McDowell, director Zack Snyder, co-producer Wesley Coller, Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), and Russell Crowe (Jor-El).
Featurette: Man of Steel – Behind the Scenes
The re-imagining was the biggest hurdle for me to climb as a superfan of Christopher Reeve, but with everything I see being released for Man of Steel so far, I’m optimistic that it’s going to be well done.
Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Antje Traue, Julia Ormond, and Russell Crowe is slated to hit theaters June 14th.

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

Even if that meant grabbing interviews from set movers or craft services, of which we did. So when people integral to the production would walk to and from set, our wonderful handler Rachel, who also happens to be the Director of Marketing at American World Pictures, would grab them and away we went. A few such people included Visual Effects Supervisor Bo Opfer, Production Designer Bryan McBrien and Make-Up Artists Roxanne Pike and Josh Dunlap. Each of their parts in the production is crucial and generally happens when the cameras aren’t rolling. However, once the director yells “Action” their work is front and center.
The first of my conversations was a chat with Bo Opfer.

Update: I originally posted a trailer for this movie that I found on Youtube, and the Deadline commenters have spent the day beating it like it owed them money. The producers have appealed to my sense of fair play because, they said, the trailer was an early sales tool that doesn't reflect the quality of the finished film. So I've pulled the trailer. Exclusive: Arc Entertainment is teaming with Barry Gordon's XLrator Media to acquire U.S. distribution rights to Bunraku, the Guy Moshe-directed martial arts action film that premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last fall. The film stars Josh Hartnett, Ron Perlman, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Kevin McKidd, Jordi Molla, Gackt Camui and Shun Sugata. Hartnett plays a mysterious drifter who arrives in town the same time as a young Japanese warrior (Gackt). The town has been poisoned by criminal elements, and each man moves along toward separate missions,...

DreamWorks Animation has announced that Chris Pine, Hugh Jackman, Jude Law, Alec Baldwin and Isla Fisher will voice the 2012 DreamWorks Animation 3D film Rise of the Guardians. We've known about the Dreamworks Animation adaptation of William Joyce's book series The Guardians of Childhood for some time [1]. The book series, called "a contemporary fairytale based on existing fairytale characters" involves the world's five unlikeliest heroes - Jack Frost, North (aka Santa), Bunnymund (the Easter Bunny), Tooth (the Tooth Fairy), and Sandy (the Sandman) - who must band together to stop an ancient spirit called Pitch (the Boogeyman) from plunging the world into eternal darkness. Of course, the characters have been "somewhat renamed and massively re-imagined". Joyce's work inspired Disney's Meet The Robinsons. Variety [2] reports that Law will play Pitch (the Boogeyman), Pine will voice Jack Frosty, Jackman is Bunnymund (the Easter Bunny), Baldwin is North (Santa Claus) and Fisher plays...

I’m a huge Star Trek and VFX geek – probably why I like Michael Bay films. I was so pleased when Star Trek took home the Oscar for makeup at the 82nd Academy Awards earlier this year. As you can see from the picture above, yours truly was at the Academy’s Makeup Symposium on Saturday eve of the Oscars. AMPAS sent out this press release on another special Star Trek event at the Academy earlier today.

One of Hollywood’s finest production designers talks about the aborted new take on Fahrenheit 451, the fascinating indie movie Upside Down, and his thoughts on 3D…
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of chatting with acclaimed production designer Alex McDowell about his work on Steven Spielberg's Minority Report, which comes out on Blu-ray in the UK on Monday 17th May. Today, he's been talking through his aborted work on Fahrenheit 451, the world of 3D movies, and what he's currently up to.

Alex McDowell is one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed production designers. Here, in the first of two interviews, he looks back at his work on Steven Spielberg's Minority Report…
As Minority Report hits Blu-ray in the UK on Monday 17th May, we had the absolute pleasure of chatting at length with acclaimed production designer Alex McDowell. Here, he chats to us about bringing the look and feel of Minority Report to the big screen, and how to go about designing a futuristic movie that genuinely lasts. Here's what he had to say...
Let's start with perhaps an obvious question. Looking back at Minority Report now, what are your thoughts on the project?
There's a few things, really. It was a very important film for me because it really changed the way we worked. An accidental collision of time and technology and opportunity. Plus Spielberg was directing it, which empowered us.

I agree, Sam Rockwell deserves an Oscar nomination for Moon. Tilda Swinton deserves an Oscar nomination for Julia. Julianne Moore deserves an Oscar nomination for A Single Man (the voters are probably punishing her for her acting on 30 Rock). And Paul Blart Mall Cop deserves an Oscar for Best Picture. Okay, the last I don't agree with, but I'm sure someone out there does. Because for every film, performance, and contribution not recognized by the ever-disappointing organization called The Academy there is surely someone defending it by shouting "Snub!"
So, without further ado, here are the complaints heard round the web today, including those that complain about the Academy Awards in general, following the announcement of this year's Oscar nominations:
Peter Travers at The Travers Take: Ten shots for Best Picture, and The Blind Side gets a nod? What about smaller movies, like Moon with Sam Rockwell -- did you ever think of nominating him?...

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. Chicago – What took so long? Seriously, why are studios waiting so long to release some essential titles on Blu-Ray? Every time someone asks me why I think that Blu-Ray hasn’t taken off as quickly as some insiders expected, I have the same answer. “Because your favorite movie isn’t on Blu-Ray.” At least one of those “favorite movies” can be checked off the list with the release of “Fight Club” in a glorious tenth anniversary edition from Fox.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

Fight Club
Directed by: David Fincher
Cast: Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Meat Loaf, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto
Running Time: 2 hrs 20 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: November 17, 2009
Plot: An insomniac thirty something (Norton) with no purposeful existence meets an anarchist (Pitt). Together they start a “fight club,” which evolves into an underground society that offers men more happiness than the possessions that have ruled their lives.
Who’S It For? By appearance, Fight Club is a guy’s movie, a bonanza of machoness that has dudes beating each other in order to achieve catharsis. However, the mind of Fight Club extends far beyond the action movie genre, and is presented with an aesthetic brilliance that is worth a viewing itself.

The run of the Metropolitan Opera's Damnation of Faust, designed by Canadian powerhouse designer Robert Lepage and his Ex Machina troupe, just started. We promise to give you a run-down of the opera's blitz of techno-imagery on Monday. Meanwhile, here are five high-tech operas that, depending on your tilt, either jar or excite the senses.
The Magic Flute
South African artist and visual director William Kentridge wowed audiences with his experimental, cinematic staging of Mozart's The Magic Flute in Belgium in 2005 and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2007. Rendering the stage a landscape of animated projections and artwork timed to correspond to singers' movements and arias, he made the opera closer to a video work. Animations come from Kentridge's "erasures"--black-and-white drawings of silhouettes, birds, and apartheid-era South African subjects that are photographed, erased, redrawn, and then animated to give a grainy, flip book-style pace to the action on-stage.

Animations come from Kentridge's "erasures"--black-and-white drawings of silhouettes, birds, and apartheid-era South African subjects that are photographed, erased, redrawn, and then animated to give a grainy, flip book-style pace to the action on-stage.

Variety has confirmed reports that Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst will star in Juan Solanas' $50 million sci-fi fantasy Upside Down , which is being described as a "Romeo and Juliet" story. The film is in pre-production and will start shooting in Montreal in mid-February for a fall 2011 release. Jim Skotchdopole ( Man on Fire ) will executive produce and Watchmen production designer Alex McDowell is also on board.

Like it was for many males of my generation, Fight Club was a formative film of my youth. It was brutal, hip, mean and fun — everything that a young teenager aspires to be!
Unlike many other males of my generation, I understood it was satirical and sarcastic, and that fight clubs were indeed not cool to start up in loving tribute of the film.
However, revisiting the film brings back warm memories of one of my first ventures into innovative, stylized filmmaking, and it’s surely one of David Fincher’s best works.
To date, it’s also the only completely successful film adaptation of a Chuck Palanuik novel.
Now, the beautifully gritty film will finally be arriving on Bluray on November 23rd, 2009. From the official press release for the disc:
“Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity you will become a statistic.

Watchmen is a testament to cinematic bravura. It’s fearless filmmaking. It’s an audacious reminder of why it is Always better to aim high rather than set your sights on the middle. It’s a great film made from a great graphic novel by the great Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Watchmen is why I love the movies.
When I trepidaciously went to see the film in March, I entered the theater beset with doubts as to how director Zack Snyder (300) could pull it off, but two hours and forty two minutes later I left the Manhattan multiplex in a state of cinematic satiety, my usual garrulous self rendered silent by ineffable joy. Ok, enough with the lovefest and lavish praise and big words. I’ve seen Watchmen three times: Once in its regular theatrical format, another time in IMAX and now on DVD in a 186-minute Director’s Cut.

We're not technically halfway through the year (oops. missed that opportunity) but let's say January releases don't really count. That's not a stretch to say. If the year ended today here's what my top ten would like like (alpha order) with the Best Picture nominees in red. This isn't really the warm up to Tfe's awards (unless the remainder of the year is hugely disappointing) it's more like lacing up your gym shoes before heading out to the warm-up. We hope.
