Helen Mirren, James McAvoy, Paul Giamatti in The Last Station AFI Fest 2009, Sat., Nov. 7 at the Santa Monica Laemmle Theater 4 on 2nd Street in Santa Monica. AFI Fest 2009 comes to a close with the following screenings: Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station, which is set near the end of Leo Tolstoy’s life, has been getting lots of Oscar buzz for its stars: James McAvoy as Tolstoy’s assistant; Helen Mirren as Tolstoy’s wife; and Christopher Plummer as the verbose author of the never-ending War and Peace. Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Ilisa Barbash’s Sweetgrass offers a look at sheepherding in Montana’s Absaroka-Beartooth mountain range. Apart from the sheep and the high peaks, there’s no connection to Brokeback Mountain. Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar’s stop-motion [...] »

Our friends over at First Showing got an interesting little scoop this afternoon, picking up some casting news from Robert Redford's upcoming Lincoln assassination film The Conspirator. A friend of Fs' Alex Billington ran into RocknRolla star Toby Kebbell, who said that he was in town to work on The Conspirator and that he's playing John Wilkes Booth. For those who missed 6th grade history, Booth was the man that pulled the trigger on President Abraham Lincoln in Box 7 at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865. If this turns out to be true (all signs point to yes, as it's first hand), Kebbell completes a cast that includes James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn, Frederick Aiken, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Tom Wilkinson. The film will follow the story of Mary Surratt (Wright Penn), the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination. "As the whole nation turns against her, she »

Last night, a friend of mine at a Hollywood party ran into Toby Kebbell, the very talented British actor who some of you may remember seeing in RocknRolla as Johnny Quid or in Control as Rob Gretton. His career has taken off recently, as Disney has given him two key roles in two of their big movies - Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer's Apprentice. My friend said that Kebbell told him that he is getting ready to shoot Robert Redford's The Conspirator, in which he plays the role of John Wilkes Booth. The film already has an impressive cast lead by James McAvoy and Robin Wright Penn, but Kebbell wasn't listed anywhere. This not a rumor, it is confirmed casting. I trust my friend and know for certain that Kebbell was there talking with him (as I was at the same party). I'm surprised that his involvement hasn't »

Hard to believe but the oft shirtless and sometime drunken bongo playing Matthew McConaughey turns 40 today. He still looks mighty fine, but you know how Hollywood likes shiny new things — so we were wondering who might succeed him as the undisputed king of Hollywood romantic comedies.
Speaking of bongo playing...
There are so many handsome actors out there to choose from, but we decided to take this thing seriously and only consider actors who are 1) under 40, and 2) are already in the movies. (That means current soap actors, Broadway performers and the like are out of the running.)
"No Broadway performers you say? Thank God,
I thought I was going to have to go up against Nick Adams."
Using those parameters we came up with 13 potential chick flick friendly movie star successors to Matthew McConaughey. You can either peruse the following pages for a photo gallery of our worthy usurpers to »

Of all those involved in the upcoming adaptation of The Hobbit, Ian McKellen seems to be the most vocal. The last time he “spilled the beans” about the pre-Lord of the Rings adventure (along with him talking a little bit about the standalone Magneto movie), McKellen talked about when we could expect the script, which, he stated, would be “very soon.”
That was last month – fast forward a few weeks and it appears The Hobbit script has surfaced (or at least a draft of it) and lucky Sir McKellen has apparently had a read of it. However, it’s early days yet for the film (Part 1 doesn’t come out until the end of 2011), and sadly but not surprisingly, McKellen is staying tight-lipped about what’s in the script. Here’s what he told SciFiWire about it during an interview last week promoting AMC’s The Prisoner:

Hot on the heels of Marge Simpson posing for Playboy comes word that another animated star will pose in the buff: Holli Would.
Starring opposite Brad Pitt in the 1992 film Cool World, Holli became and instant phenomenon with plush dolls, motor oil, trading cards and a line of plastic BBQ equipment.
Holli Would will appear in the January issue of Blonde Biscuits according to Ms. Wood’s spokesperson Lakima Hassani. “She needs the money,” Hassani said. “She’s not the type of person to pose naked. She was brought up in the Mormon faith and they have gone on record saying that they dislike members of their congregation posing for Blonde Biscuits.”
In Cool World, Would played a girl who wanted to break free from the shackles of her own world and seek adventures in another land. Risking everything, Would breaks the rules of society and finally strikes out on her own. »

The casting news tonight is all over the place: First we have Billy Bob Thornton teaming up with Dwayne Johnson in Faster, a George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor, Notorious) action drama vehicle. Johnson will star as Driver, an ex-con out for revenge following his brother's murder. Thornton plays Cop, a (you guessed it) police officer tailing Driver. There's also Killer, a hitman who's after Driver for some reason (my god, maybe he killed Driver's brother?!). The latter role remains uncast. Danny Huston has signed on to Robert Redford's period drama, The Conspirator, as a prosecutor in the Lincoln assassination trial. The film will specifically center on Mary Surratt, portrayed by Robin Wright Penn, who was infamous as the lone female co-conspirator in the assassination. Huston will also be joined by James McAvoy as Fredrick Aiken, Surratt's reluctant defense lawyer, as well as Justin Long, Tom Wilkinson, and Kevin Kline. »

Probably one of the most coveted roles in film, My Fair Lady's Eliza Dolittle already has a history of being a role most sought after by big stars in cinema - Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor, among others. Just now, The Telegraph reported that in the latest film adaptation, Keira Knightley was cast as the ambitious, working class girl who started out as a flower seller and became the toast of high society.
Details as follows:
"Joe and Keira are looking forward to working together again immensely," says a friend of the 37-year-old director.
In August, I reported that Knightley had been forced to compete with Johansson, 24, for the role of the Cockney flower seller played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film.
"I have two actresses as potential Elizas, one British, the other American," said Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who is producing the film with Duncan Kenworthy, at the time. »
