An unresolved childhood trauma leads a paranormal investigator in search of answers in Jenna Mattison’s convoluted ghost tale The Sound. Obscure in more ways than one and consistently uninvolving, this is a vaguely conceived suspenser that’s unlikely to find much support among horror audiences with justifiably higher expectations.
Paranormal researcher Kelly Johansen (Rose McGowan) specializes in debunking ghost sightings using sophisticated audio and computer equipment, reporting the results on her personal blog, where her enthusiastic followers applaud her frequent attacks on so-called supernatural events. She’s puzzled however, to receive an online message at her Detroit home office about an implausibly...

*full disclosure: an online screener of The Sound was provided by the film's publicity arm. **there are spoilers here. Director/writer: Jenna Mattison. Cast: Rose McGowan, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Eklund. Sometimes, reviews serve as a warning. That is the case with Jenna Mattison's The Sound. Her sophomore feature is a cliche-ridden, very flawed feature. The plot barely progresses from paranormal skeptic, investigating an underground subway tunnel. Instead, it stalls out through much of Act I and II, even into the final act. Barely anything happens as Kelly, played by Rose McGowan, struggles with her own mental instability and disbelief. Meanwhile, the protagonist is nearly one dimensional. And, this viewer wonders, with the lack of scares and gore: who is this horror film was really meant for? Maybe, there is a growing child horror fan base, out there. For everyone else, you need to skip the subway train station that says: "The Sound.

The Sound trailer shows the unusual team-up of Rose McGowan and Christopher Lloyd as paranormal investigators.
While The Conjuring films may have rejuvenated the box office viability of the paranormal horror genre, a smaller scale movie, called The Sound, comes to the table with something unique: Rose McGowan and Christopher Llloyd teaming up to battle a malevolent spirit.
Video of The Sound Official Trailer
The Sound trailer centres on McGowan’s Kelly Johansen, a passionate skeptic of the paranormal who, armed with an expertise in acoustics, utilises soundwaves as the primary tool of reports that she posts online. However, the debunking activities lead her to a case in an abandoned subway – built on a graveyard – in which a purportedly hoaxed suicide occurred 40 years earlier.
Ironically, the case not only uncovers paranormal proof, but makes Kelly the target of a malevolent spirit, forcing her to see disturbing imagery and memories.
