When Jo Koy was announced as Golden Globes host on Dec. 21, it was just a little over two weeks to air. “When they asked me, it was an immediate yes, I couldn’t believe this was happening,” Koy tells Variety. “And then I woke up and went, ‘wait a minute. I have two weeks to write jokes!
“Actually, I think I had less than two weeks because I didn’t get my writers until five days later,” he adds. “When Tina [Fey] and all those other hosts got the gig, they had months to prepare. I’m literally looking at just days! It’s been a crash course in hosting.”
But Koy is relishing this moment. The comedian, who recently sealed a deal to bring his next two stand-up comedy specials to Netflix (his fifth and sixth for the streamer), says he’s aware of the symbolism behind hosting a major awards show ceremony.

Robert De Niro had a special uncredited appearance in the David O. Russell film American Hustle. He met with some familiar and not-so-familiar faces on set. But one of Hustle’s actors, Christian Bale, completely caught De Niro by surprise with his new look.

Instead of wearing a fat suit, Bale went the extra mile for his American Hustle character by putting on the weight the role required. His process for getting out of shape was a simple one, and consisted of eating as much as he could.
“I ate lots of doughnuts, a whole lot of cheeseburgers and whatever I could get my hands on. I literally ate anything that came my way,” Bale, once told People. “I was about 185 and went up to 228. I’m still working it off.”

A second woman has come forward to sue celebrity hotspot Nobu Malibu over alleged sexual harassment and other actions by managers and customers.
A woman identified only as Jayne Doe II filed the latest suit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The legal documents allege sexual assault and battery, gender discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to prevent discrimination and harassment, and negligent hiring and supervision.
The latest plaintiff joins a complaint filed on Sept. 13 by a 23-year-old hostess. That plaintiff also alleged that she and her female colleagues were routinely subjected to sexual assault by customers and managers.
The Nobu restaurants were founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa and are coowned by actor Robert De Niro and producer Meir Teper. The restaurant is a celebrity favorite, and legal documents say the venue is frequented by such clients as the Kardashians, Beyonce, and Justin Bieber.

Hollywood hotspot Nobu Malibu was sued Sept. 13 by a Jane Doe plaintiff who alleges hostesses are “subjected to an intense pattern and practice” of sexual misconduct from supervisors. According to a review of court documents by The Hollywood Reporter, the lawsuit contains similar claims as at least two others filed against the Malibu location of the restaurant since 2019.
Nobu didn’t respond to email and phone inquiries for comment. The restaurant was founded by chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and producer Meir Teper. Since opening in 1994, it’s become a hub for Hollywood power players, and the brand has expanded to include 56 locations across the world and a hotel chain.
The trio of lawsuits claim sexual advances and groping from supervisors after which management neglected to properly respond to the alleged misconduct to prevent retaliation from the employees’ supervisors.

It’s been four years since singer Beyonce’s last headlining show, and her performance in Dubai was a fittingly grand return. The star-studded show began on Saturday night like a theatrical production. Violinists crowned with metallic gold headpieces and voluminous red skirts hit the stage first, and Beyonce’s dancers and more musicians followed in matching garb, standing still with their hands folded in front of the Egyptian-themed backdrop, reports Variety.
As guests at the invite-only, hour-long performance started screaming with excitement, Beyonce raised up on a platform wearing a yellow corseted dress, topped with a feathered skirt and a feathered backpiece.
Fireworks exploded above the venue as the iconic artist opened the show singing Etta James ‘At Last’ into a gold microphone. Then, she announced to the crowd that her mom, Tina Knowles, father, Mathew Knowles, her “beautiful husband” Jay-Z and their children, Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter...

Robert De Niro apologized on Monday on behalf of the United States to Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, citing President Trump’s “disgusting” behavior at the G7 summit in Quebec.
“I just want to make a note of apology for the idiotic behavior of my president. It’s a disgrace,” said De Niro. “And I apologize to Justin Trudeau too and the other people at the G7. It’s disgusting.”
The “Goodfellas” star made the remarks in Toronto while on hand to promote a new development with celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa. His remarks were met with applause by the Canadian audience.

Google’s top searches from the year are out and when it comes to food, the world wanted comfort, comfort and more comfort.
The most requested recipe of 2016 was green bean casserole followed by Brussels sprouts, hashbrown casserole, guacamole and chicken marsala. A few sweets also made the list with hungry people searching for buttercream frosting and snow cream (ice cream made from snow, apparently).
A stressful year clearly meant the world was stress-eating which of course eventually leads to dieting. The Golo Diet — which claims to optimize the body’s insulin levels — topped the list. But a diet claiming...

Making time for one another in the midst of their busy careers, Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis showed up at Nobu Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills last night (March 25).
The “House” stunner and her “Horrible Bosses” beau both looked loved up as they scurried out to their car following the romantic dinner date.
And when she reached over to put her seat belt on, Olivia inadvertently showed the shutterbugs her gorgeous (and huge) engagement ring.
Of their relationship, Wilde recently told press, "On our first date, in New York City, we closed the restaurant down at 2 a.m.! He didn't kiss me, and I was madly in love. I was overwhelmed.
I've never before experienced looking at someone and thinking, that's who I want to raise a child with."...

Forbes' new list of top-earning chefs for the last 12 months features plenty of names you'd expect. Loudmouthed UK toque Gordon Ramsay stands head and shoulders above the rest with a whopping $38 million a year. Rachael Ray and Wolfgang Puck round out the top three with $25 million and $20 million respectively.
We have to say, though -- Guy Fieri cracked the top ten? The Food Network star pulled in a $8 million last year, ahead of list no-shows Anthony Bourdain, Andrew Zimmern and Giada Delaurentis. That figure might have something to do with the fact he's Food Network's biggest star at the moment, according to Forbes. His show "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" is shown up to eight times a day on the network, plus he stars in "Guy’s Big Bite," "Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off" and "Food Network Star." Like the rest of us, celebrities love to indulge in great food and drink whenever they can, but for some, being able to get a table wherever and whenever they want isn't enough. Take actor and producer Robert De Niro, who after patronizing sushi chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa's Los Angeles restaurant, urged the chef to take his concept to the East Coast. A partnership was born, and now the duo's Nobu empire has locations around the world, while the original Tribeca location alone boasts more than $8 million in annual revenue and remains one of New York's most coveted reservations.

Robert De Niro had to badger restaurant boss Nobuyuki Matsuhisa to join him as a business partner - because the Japanese tycoon failed to recognise the Hollywood legend.
Taxi Driver star De Niro approached Matsuhisa at his eaterie in Los Angeles in the early 1990s and proposed to open a sister branch of Nobu in his native New York.
But the baffled businessman had no idea who De Niro was, and turned down the offer - and the actor was forced to ask several more times before Matsuhisa agreed.
The restaurateur tells The Sunday Times Magazine, "Back then, one of my customers was Robert De Niro. I didn't know who he was to begin with, but every time he was in L.A. he'd book a table. His favourite meal was baked black cod marinated in miso.
"Then one day he asked me if I'd open a restaurant with him in New York. I was afraid of expanding, so I said no. But he kept coming back, and several years later I agreed. He's been a business partner ever since."...

Are these "Previouslies" getting longer every week? Even if they are, they are still easier to sit through than the opening title/credit sequence. I haven’t mentioned it before but I just want to go on the record: I hate the circus theme. Pretty much every contestant looks either insane or forced to act under duress.
Anyway, once those are over, Tennille screams some math at us. She is in the final four, which means she has beaten thirteen contestants. The remaining contestants sit around with Wtf faces. In an interview, Kevin lists the weaknesses of each of the other three, saying he can easily beat them. Unless they figure out his weakness. He doesn't say what that is, and I admit I'm hard pressed to come up with one.
At 6:30 the next morning, Dave is up early. He is giving himself a pep talk in the bathroom mirror.

Charlize Theron, Sting and Sienna Miller have signed a petition ordering a top London restaurant to stop serving a rare fish dish.
The trio, along with model Elle Macpherson and former Cheers stars Woody Harrelson and Ted Danson, added their names to a letter sent to the boss of posh eaterie Nobu - Nobu Matsuhisa - in protest at the endangered blue fin tuna's inclusion on his menu.
They claim they can no longer dine at the establishment "with a clear conscience" if it continues to serve the fish, which is heading towards extinction in the next four years.
The letter states, "We feel strongly that Blue Fin Tuna must be completely removed from your menu as it is an extremely endangered animal."
And British comic Stephen Fry has also weighed into the debate, saying, "It's lunacy. There's no justification for peddling extinction."

Actor Robert De Niro's upmarket restaurant chain Nobu is reportedly close to settling a $2.5 million (£1.7 million) lawsuit over staff tips. Two waiters sued Nobu in 2007 on behalf of hundreds of workers at three of its exclusive New York restaurants, Nobu, Nobu 57 and Nobu Next Door, claiming they were forced to share tips with management and were not paid overtime.
Now company owners, including De Niro, chef Nobu Matsuhisa and others, have agreed to settle the lawsuit, according to court papers filed on Friday.
Current employees and ex-employees who worked at the three restaurants between August 2001 and August 2008 will reportedly receive an average of $3,300 (£2,200) each.

It will be the latest of his Nobu ventures, and follows a string of Japanese restaurants around the world - a partnership with chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Richie Notar.
The first Nobu hotel will open in the Israeli resort of Herzliya this summer, followed by one in New York's financial district over the next two-to-four years.
Notar jokes of the new hotel, which will have a Japanese flavour throughout, "Instead of a mint on the pillow, you could find a sushi roll."
De Niro's son Raphael, who is in charge of marketing the properties, adds, "It's really exciting for us."...

Actor Jeremy Piven has reportedly been banned from America's Nobu restaurants after paying a waiter's tip with a DVD. The Old School star was dining at celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa's restaurant in Aspen, Colorado during the recent Us Comedy Arts Festival. When the bill came, Piven paid up and left the waiter a copy of his Entourage series DVD as a tip. The outraged server threw the DVD at the celebrity diner. A fellow diner tells the New York Daily News, "He (Piven) came in with a large group of 12 or more without reservations and asked for a table. It was a very busy night, but a table, although cramped, was provided. On his way out, he made a nasty comment to the manager: 'Thanks for nothing.'" The actor was later advised to steer clear of all Nobu restaurants. But Piven is playing down the incident in Aspen: "I'm such a fan of Nobu and all of his restaurants. I had a great dinner at the Nobu in Aspen. As always, the meal was excellent and the service was great."...

Does anyone remember what the original joke of Mike Myers' "Austin Powers" series was? More to the point, does anyone care? The third installment, "Austin Powers in Goldmember", is a grab bag of gags, in-jokes, random movie spoofs, cross-cultural craziness, time-travel travesty, winks, nods and pantomime. It's truly a mess, but one that young fans and, no doubt, more than a few adults will embrace.
The franchise is definitely showing signs of wear, to say nothing of uncharacteristic sentimentality. But when Myers and company hit you with a perfectly realized gag, you throw up your hands in surrender. Whatever the creative fall-off, all signs point to boxoffice gold.
With each movie, Myers -- who again co-writes (with Michael McCullers) and co-produces -- plays more characters. Here he, of course, plays Austin, the spy from swinging '60s London, and his old nemesis Dr. Evil. He also returns as Fat Bastard, the grossly obese Scot. In a new creation, he takes on the title character, a gold-obsessed crime genius, easily the weakest of the lot, rather ill-defined but fortunately given little screen time.
The story is best understood as a series of skits loosely connected by the usual James Bond-ish absurdities. Characters from other movie genres join in. Michael Caine, who turns up as Austin's father, Nigel, recalls the Harry Palmer spy movies as well as "Alfie" from the '60s. Beyonce Knowles, founding member of the female vocal group Destiny's Child, displays glamour and charm as Foxxy Cleopatra, a salute to '70s blaxploitation. And in Dr. Evil's camp, Fred Savage plays a mole who indeed has a mole growing on his upper lip.
It's the 1970s that get the major kidding in this episode as Austin time travels back to 1975 for a quick visit to "Studio 69". But the story, such as it is, revolves around, of all things, daddy issues. Austin gets no respect from His Daddy, Caine's flamboyant yet emotionally careless British superspy. Meanwhile, Dr. Evil pampers his cloned and miniaturized self, Mini Me (Verne Troyer), while his real son, Scott (Seth Green), struggles for any recognition from Dad. This father/son quandary reaches an even greater level in a startling final revelation that wraps things up.
"Goldmember" has a host of celebrity cameos, mostly in the beginning, which New Line is asking critics not to reveal. The Tokyo setting of much of the story allows a few "celebrity" sightings one can reveal -- renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa plays the cunning businessman Mr. Roboto, who designs the equipment Dr. Evil uses in his latest evil scheme, and Godzilla appears in a novel way in one of the film's funniest sequences. The Japanese setting also precipitates a truly hilarious gag involving the difficulties of reading subtitles.
Yet in "Goldmember", again directed by Jay Roach, the misses outweigh the hits by a wide margin. It takes more than 20 minutes for the movie to kick into gear, and too often frantic energy substitutes for comic invention. Oddly, the worst gags revolve around flatulence and excrement and the best around urination. Go figure. Better yet, don't.
Sets, costumes and effects have little rhyme or reason. But Roach's talented crew is merely following the blueprint of Myers and McCullers' wouldn't-this-be-groovy-baby script.
