“The Last Days of the Space Age” creator David Chidlow has signed with CAA for representation.
The writer-director works across shows in the U.K., Australia and the U.S. Most recently, he is the writer, creator and showrunner behind Disney+’s eight-part series, “The Last Days of the Space Age.”
Set in 1979 Western Australia, the series is billed as a comedy drama that centers on three families whose relationships are put to the test while major social and political events — such as the Miss Universe pageant and the U.S. Space Station Skylab crashing just outside the suburb — throw everything into disarray.
Elsewhere, Chidlow is co-creating “War Rooms,” with “The Serpent” star Jenna Coleman set to star.
Chidlow’s debut feature film, “L’Histoire de Nos Petites Morts,” premiered in 2012, and was produced by Margaret Matheson. The micro-budget French-language pic centers on a banker and sex worker who take a hotel room in Geneva,...

Ten film projects, including features from Doctor Who director Euros Lyn and Borrowed Time producer Olivier Kaempfer, have been selected to progress to the first round of the Film Agency for Wales’ low budget film scheme.
The teams behind these projects will now participate in a training and mentoring programme supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, which is funded by the National Lottery via the BFI, and through the Skills Investment Fund (Sif).
The Film Agency for Wales devised and developed Cinematic in partnership with the BFI Film Fund, BBC Films, S4C and Soda Pictures to support emerging filmmaking talent from Wales in making “contemporary, dynamic and distinctive feature films” with budgets of around £300,000 ($480,000).
A total of 56 applications were made to the programme following its launch in June. The ten projects and their filmmaking teams selected to continue with the programme are:

Red Lights
Stars: Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Elisabeth Olsen, Craig Roberts, Toby Jones | Written and Directed by Rodrigo Cortés
Following his one-man-one-set feature Buried, Rodrigo Cortés goes a little bigger with Red Lights, a psychological thriller looking at parahuman activity. Sigourney Weaver plays Margaret Matheson who, along with her physicist sidekick Tom (Cillian Murphy), goes round exposing so-called psychics, as she does not believe anyone can have special powers. When the most famous ‘psychic’, Simon Silver (played by Robert De Niro) makes a comeback after 30 years, Tom becomes obsessed with investigating him, and exposing him as a fraud.
Red Lights starts off quite slow, introducing Weaver and Murphy’s characters, and it seems like he made a choice not to give the audience everything about them straight away, and so in turn they have to take the time to show it. Anyone watching this at home might get bored,...

Buried director Rodrigo Cortés returns with a film that’s much bigger than his last intimate project, but also much smaller in potency. Red Lights never overcomes its weak script and almost directionless story as pro actors Robert De Niro and Sigourney Weaver act as mice leading the blind in this disappointing thriller. Cillian Murphy‘s talent gets misused yet again and Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t even get a chance to say more than a handful lines. Red Lights is the collection of great talent working off of bad material, making it a disappointing time-waster that you shouldn’t bother with.
Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and her assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) spend their days studying paranormal occurrences. They journey out where ever someone claims to have spotted or witnessed a paranormal event and they usually debunk them early on. From the man that brought you Buried, the 2010 thriller that found Ryan Reynolds stuck in a coffin, comes Red Lights, a creepy psychological thriller that was inspired by the words paranormal and hoax, according to writer-director Rodrigo Cortés.
Interested in the tension that exists between notions of miracles and magic and those in the scientific profession who are out to prove, with reason and evidence, that such things don't exist, Red Lights is all about contradictions and whether or not one chooses to believe what can't be proven.
Along for the ride is Sigourney Weaver as super-cynical psychologist Margaret Matheson, Robert De Niro as the renowned psychic Simon Silver and handsome Irishman Cillian Murphy as Tom Buckley, a man of science who isn't fully convinced that all so-called miracles can be debunked.

It’s difficult to criticize a movie like Red Lights. No, Red Lights isn’t perfect, nor beyond reproach. The issue at hand is that this movie’s flaws, of which there are many, would require a more detailed look at its plot and any spoilers therein. This review won’t ruin the surprises, but only so much can be said of Red Lights’ problems before you learn more of the story than you should. At its core, this film boasts an impressive cast who deliver decent-to-excellent performances; sadly, it also has a script that slowly but surely goes off the rails.
Despite what you may think, Red Lights isn’t an in-depth analysis connecting the desperate choices people make and Roxanne, the character from the famous song by The Police. (Thank you very much, and don...

Chicago – “Red Lights” is a mess. And yet it’s also not messy enough. Rodrigo Cortes follows up his vastly superior “Buried” with this supernatural tale filled with plot contrivances that would make M. Night Shyamalan call bullshit. Still, he does so with a direct, straightforward style when a bit less polish would have given it the character it’s missing. The script is a mess but the production is clean. It’s nonsense on a plot level but played seriously without nearly enough personality or edge. Even the film’s undeniably talented cast can’t save it.

In a matter of minutes, they have not only found the source of the loud sounds in the night but...

Coming off the mildly successful Buried, Spanish director Rodrigo Cortes is once again providing the thrills, but this time, in another sense. Instead of confinement and claustrophobia, Cortes brings us into the world of the paranormal, offering up an eerie tale that starts out promising, but ultimately falls victim to a lacklustre script full of problems.
Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) are investigators of the paranormal, solving mini-mysteries and dashing dreams of those who think they really do have a gift. Debunking is their plied trade and and seemingly, they’re the best at it. Even academics such as Paul Shackleton (Toby Jones) aren’t safe as the super-confident Matheson exposes his latest psychic findings and emasculates him in less time than a commercial break.
Just when they think they’ve seen it all, the two investigators come across the reclusive king of all psychics, Simon...

I can't say people won't be frustrated by the way Red Lights ends. In fact, it was the battle cry coming out of Sundance 2012 with many saying the final minutes ruined it for them. I mention this only because I'd heard this complaint going into the film and it likely affected my viewing, although I don't believe it was a negative effect.
I also mention it because the ending has apparently been changed since it played the Park City festival, but I have no clue in what way. That said, while Red Lights director Rodrigo Cortes' sleight of hand may not be as dexterous as it needs to be to carry out the film's overarching narrative, I still think the film raises enough thematic, faith-based issues to make it worth watching and exploring.

Come back, M. Night Shyamalan, all is forgiven. Rodrigo Cortes’s psychic thriller Red Lights is a genre film that aspires to so much more — tackling Big Questions like the nature of belief — even as it flounders in its own silliness. Veering between tonal and narrative extremes, it’s the kind of film that makes you long for the grim pomposity of something like Signs. You could be mistaken at first for thinking Red Lights must be a spoof. It opens on paranormal investigators Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) and Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) arriving to study a supposed house-haunting. They quickly unravel it, however, by telling the family’s daughter to quit secretly banging her dresser against the wall and making it seem like the whole house is shuddering with phantoms. Buckley and Matheson travel around “exploring” paranormal activity — that is to say, they uncover frauds. At least, that’s...

Editor’s note: Red Lights hits limited release this Friday, so please take this re-run of our Sundance review (originally posted on January 23, 2012) as a green light to give it a read. Rodrigo Cortés returns to Sundance after 2010′s Buried with another film about confinement and restriction – but one that turns those attentions to the human mind and its limits, instead of the body and its own absolutes. In Red Lights, Cortés sets his sights on the world of paranormal investigations, but in a way wholly different than we’ve come to expect from horror flicks that mine similar territory. Red Lights centers on Drs. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Buckley (Cillian Murphy), who work to disprove paranormal activity. The pair split their time between teaching at a university (to packs of eager students) and traveling to presumed paranormal occurrences (to debunk them). Both Matheson and Buckley maintain that they’ve never seen true paranormal activity that...

If you're not in San Diego for Comic-Con or if you have no interest in the show (lord how we wish we were you), you should be aware that Rodrigo Cortes' latest thriller, Red Lights, hits theatres nationwide this Friday. How about a clip?
Red Lights follows Tom Buckley (Murphy), the assistant to veteran paranormal expert Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), who makes it her job to prove metaphysical phenomena to be nothing more than elaborate hoaxes being played by creative scam artists. They've traveled the globe together in search of proof, never finding anything that can credibly prove the existence of a single true psychic or the like.
But the one 'scam artist' that Dr. Matheson has never been able to disprove is the legendary psychic Simon Silver (Robert DeNiro), a charismatic showman of sorts whose return to the spotlight raises tensions for both Dr. Matheson and Tom, leaving...

What you see, you can’t believe. What you can’t understand, though, can ultimately be explained. This is the modus operandi for Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and assistant Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy), parapsychologists primarily interested in debunking supernatural phenomena. “When I see hoof prints,” she says, “I think of horses, not unicorns.” They work out of the Scientific Paranormal Research Center, a budget-strained department of an anonymous university, luring in curious students like Sally (Elizabeth Olsen) and Ben (Craig Roberts) while butting heads with the well-supported likes of Dr. Paul Shackleton (Toby Jones). These investigators have never met a case they could not crack with rational thought processes, but when publicly adored spoon-bender/mind-blower Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) comes out of retirement after thirty years, Matheson doesn’t want to challenge him, much to Buckley’s frustration. This could...

Featuring Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, Cillian Murphy, Joely Richardson, Toby Young, Elizabeth Olsen
Cortés’ follow-up to Buried is a starry affair, but solid turns from his A-list cast can’t quite rescue the story from sinking under the weight of its over-wrought hypothesis.
Red Lights deals in psychic abilities, specifically those displayed on stage by extrasensory celebrities like John Edward, Sally Morgan and Sylvia Browne. Are they raking in millions thanks to an innate gift, or are they skilled cold readers perpetuating a fraudulent act? Are we able to communicate with the other side, or is talking to the dead merely wishful thinking by the bereaved? Can anyone definitively prove the existence of spirit voices, or, conversely, explain away every single instance of parapsychological activity? This heated debate has been going on at least since the foundation of the American Society for Psychical Research Society...

Do you want to believe? One of the most-anticipated movies at this year's Sundance Film Festival, Red Lights stars Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, and Robert De Niro. When the famed psychic Simon Silver (De Niro) reappears after a 30-year disappearance under mysterious circumstances, Tom and Dr. Matheson, determined to prove him a fraud, enter into the perilous realm of the paranormal, for which neither is fully prepared. At the helm of Red Lights is Rodrigo Cortes, no stranger to success at the Sundance Film Festival - his debut film Buried was a Sundance sensation. There's so much potential to the new movie from Buried helmer Rodrigo Cortés - haunted houses, séances, paranormal investigators, psychics - that it's shocking how a movie that starts out so well can so quickly run out of steam and end with such a thud.
Drs. Margaret Matheson and Tom Buckley (Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy) have dedicated their careers as paranormal investigators to debunking false psychics and those profiting on the beliefs of others. The announcement by famous blind psychic Simon Silver (Robert De Niro) that he's coming out of retirement after thirty years gets Tom excited to finally prove him to be a fraud, but his boss knows there's more to Silver and warns him to stay away. He doesn't.

Cortes’ Latest is a Discordant Rhythm of its Own.
Following up on his excellent 2010 thriller, Buried, director Rodrigo Cortes unveiled his next feature, an elliptical convulsion sporting considerable star power, Red Lights. Red Lights

Written by Rodrigo Cortés
USA, 2012
In 2010, writer and director Rodrigo Cortés made a splash with his film Buried, a low concept, low budget, but extremely well executed thriller of a picture. Two years later, he unfortunately offers up an endeavor that’s the exact polar opposite.
With a more ambitious script, more characters, and a loftier metaphysical conviction, Cortés, in his new film, looks to establish himself as both an economical and ambitious filmmaker. Frustratingly incoherent, convoluted, and ultimately pointless, his parapsychological thriller, Red Lights, may just prove to be an embarrassment of riches for Cortés.
The film centers on Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy), a physicist working under the tutelage of Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), a veteran researcher and professor on the paranormal. Together, they go around fielding, investigating, and debunking claims of phenomenon outside the scope of normal or orthodox scientific understanding.

All of the previous trailers and preview clips for Spanish writer-director Rodrigo Cortés' (Buried) upcoming psychological thriller, Red Lights, have hinted that the controversial figure at the center of the movie, Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), possesses some sort of psychic abilities. However, none of them have given us any indication what those abilities might be... Until now. The latest preview clip, released via Collider, shows that at least one of the abilities that Silver claims to possess — and that paranormal fraud investigators Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) will try desperately to debunk — is "psychic surgery."

The so-called “sophomore slump” has managed to beleaguer even the most talented of filmmakers, and Rodrigo Cortés is no exception. It isn’t for a lack of trying though, and attempting to top his nerve-shreddingly tense debut Buried – one of 2010’s best films – is a tall order to say the least. While not as, ahem, airtight as his first feature, Red Lights is a film thrilling while you’re watching it, if somewhat suspect upon reflection.
The opening scene to Cortés’ film is worrying, a generic supernatural thriller set-up, as a group of people attempt to make contact with “the other side”. It’s enough to make you think Cortés has already lost it, but this routine opening is intentional, because two of the participants, Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) and Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) are debunkers, participating only to disprove the apparently otherworldly activity. In 2010, director Rodrigo Cortes brought us Buried, where he was able to wring buckets of tension and suspense while pretty much staying within the confines of a coffin. Now with Red Lights, Cortes is stretching his legs and presents us with a supernatural mystery with the question of whether or not the paranormal exists at it's core. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) and Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) are two college professors who spend their free time debunking people with supposed paranormal abilities, such as mediums and psychic. When Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), a world renowned blind psychic, comes out of retirement after thirty years, Buckley begins to investigate him, despite Matheson's ardent protests. The deeper the investigation goes, the more obsessed Buckley becomes to expose Silver as a fraud. Working from his own script, Cortes has constructed a compelling mystery that keeps it's tricks close to it's chest until the very end.
