Metal Gear Solid on the original PlayStation was the first time I actually remember being plugged into the hype cycle of a video game. I was in my early teens and finally really getting into the hobby, reading various magazines and taking in all the information I could about the industry. When I got the game, I had an amazing time with it, but despite how focused I was on it, I couldn’t stop thinking about something I saw on the back of the instruction manual: an ad that said “Coming Soon” with a crossed-arm cop, alongside the text “Welcome to Hell” and the title Silent Hill. It gave me nothing about the contents of the actual game, but I was drawn to it. Maybe there was something transgressive to my young mind about seeing a ‘bad word’ like Hell prominently in an advertisement, maybe it was just the...

Humanity has been telling tales about simulated realities since the very dawn of storytelling, so it makes sense that modern audiences are absolutely fascinated with open-world gaming. Be it fantasy role-playing titles that allow you to step into the shoes of a more magical version of yourself or crime sims that encourage you to live out your most violent daydreams upon unsuspecting NPCs, franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Grand Theft Auto are the closest we’ve come to the immersive digital worlds that were promised to us by science fiction.
However, when it comes to horror games, the genre usually benefits from a highly curated experience with little room for side adventures. Give players too much free reign over their monster slaying and item collection and you usually end up with a gameplay loop that doesn’t mesh well with virtual frights. That’s why open world horror titles...

When it was released on the PlayStation in 1999, Silent Hill scared gamers for many reasons. For some, it was the fog. For others, the melted nurses. But perhaps most unsettling of all was the eerie soundtrack that made you imagine what horrible things could be lurking in that small town. This Wednesday, Mondo is taking gamers down memory lane with their Silent Hill soundtrack vinyl release, and we have official details and a look at the cover art.
From Mondo: "Hey all - big one this week! We're super excited to release two all-new horror scores - the soundtrack to the 1999 Survival Horror classic game, Silent Hill, and 2017's criminally under-seen, The Girl With All The Gifts.
Also, we're excited to launch a Free Domestic Shipping / $10 Flat-Rate International Shipping promo today through Sunday (4/16) for all vinyl and CDs. Just in time, too, as we have a bunch of really fun re-stocks including copies of Castlevania,...

Silent Hills is, for all intents and purposes, dead. After weeks of controversy and confusion coming from Konami surrounding the future of Hideo Kojima within the company, statements from both Guillermo del Toro and Norman Reedus have confirmed that Silent Hills isn’t going to happen. Whether this is down to a personal falling out, or simply because Konami want to stifle Kojima’s creativity by forcing him to make Mgs games for the rest of his life (my money is on that one) remains to be seen. But what’s almost certain is that Hideo Kojima will be leaving the company after the release of Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain in September, and so his collaboration with del Toro to revive the ailing Silent Hill franchise won’t be going forward. And that sucks.

Resident Evil was the first horror game I ever played. I still remember going into town and picking it up at a video game shop. It was rated as a “15″ over here in the UK, and at the time I was 14. My dad bought it for me regardless because that’s how he rolled, and it was the most excited I’d been in a long time to play a game. I read the manual from cover to cover on the drive home, and I barely had time to chew my lunch before retreating to my bedroom. I popped the disc into my Playstation, and the fun began; a comically hammy live-action opening, awkward controls, unconvincing arterial spray and Barry Burton’s legitimitately ridiculous delivery of the line “you were almost a Jill sandwich”. I was hooked.
That’s because Resident Evil was, at the time,...

Sure, it’s not much to look at now in 2014 and the voice acting is mostly atrocious and unintentionally hilarious (I dare you to not laugh during a cut scene involving some heavy exposition between characters) but Silent Hill was something else back in its day, crafting a unique psychological horror and gaming experience that was quite unlike the horror games that came before it.
It certainly wasn’t the first survival horror video game to come out on the market. Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil were making waves with their terrifying approach to the genre for a few years before. And is there anybody out there that can remember Clock Tower on the Super Nintendo? Sheesh man – I still get shivers thinking about that one. Yet it’s the approach to the horror, not only in terms of storytelling but also sound design, creature design and imagination,...

Very few videogames have great endings. We look at some of the best, and wonder if developers are wasting their time with them...
Spoiler Alert: There's no way around this. We talk about videogame endings in this feature. In particular: Halo 2, Mass Effect 3, Borderlands and, er, 1942. Also, the top 15 countdown below inevitably spoils the ending to each of the games mentioned.
They say it's not the goal that's important, but the journey to get there. This can be applied to many things, from life to sport, and also to gaming. It’s been six years since we’ve heard anything from the horrors in Silent Hill, but this weekend Silent Hill: Revelation 3D hits theaters. Written and directed by Michael J. Bassett, it tells the continuing story of Sharon (who goes by the fake name Heather in this installment) and her father who are on the run from the residents of Silent Hill that have haunted them since Sharon disappeared in the first film. Sean Bean returns as dad Harry Mason while the now eighteen-year-old Heather is played by Adelaide Clemens.
Kit Harington, known to many as the bastard Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, also joins the cast as Vincent, who you may have seen in the international poster we put up a few weeks back. FEARnet had a chance to speak with Harington about the new installment of Silent Hill and his character. Concerned with spoiler’s, he...

The trailer has finally dropped for the upcoming Silent Hill: Revelations 3D, thanks to Yahoo! Movies, and it looks like fans of both the game series and original film won't be disappointed. Revelations seems to pick up where its predecessor left off, with Sean Bean reprising his role as Harry Mason. However, this movie is going to focus on Mason's daughter, Heather, and is based more on Konami's classic survivor-horror game Silent Hill 3, in which she is the main protagonist. Adelaide Clemens will play the role of Heather.

Konami’s Silent Hill HD Collection was originally planned for a January release and then moved to March 6th. Unfortunately, the release date has shifted once again. While no reason for the delay has been given, the new date is March 20th. This may have been done to distance the game from bigger releases coming out earlier in the month, including Mass Effect 3, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and their own Silent Hill: Downpour.

Sitting around on Facebook and you're sick to death of playing Farmville, suggesting people like ridiculous things, and starting your own fanpage for absolutely no reason at all? Then why not visit the official page for Silent Hill: Downpour and prepare your grave?
Said to be the largest Silent Hill game yet, Silent Hill: Downpour will require the gamer to use the game's subway system (stench of hobo piss not included) as a means to get around! The psychological profiling aspect of the series, which first appeared in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, is back, and as you'll see from the E3 2010 announcement trailer below, everything is looking appropriately spooky!

The folks over at Official Nintendo Magazine have a new trailer up for Konami’s Wii/PS2/PSP title Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.
Shattered Memories is a re-imagining of the original game in the Silent Hill franchise. Players re-assume the role of Harry Mason as he searches for his missing daughter Cheryl in the pant-wettingly creepy town of Silent Hill.
The trailer features gameplay from the second of the games nightmare sequences, which sees Harry trying to survive (read: running like a girl) from attacks by some freakish looking monsters.
The trailer is included below, so go have a look and shed a thought or two in the comments.
What do you think of the new footage? Have you picked up Silent Hill: Shattered Memories yet?
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was released for the Wii in North America on December 8th and the PS2/PSP versions of the game are out today.

Chicago – I used to approach a new “Silent Hill” game with heightened anticipation but the franchise has been so lifeless for the last few years that I somewhat dreaded entering its world again in the alleged reimagining of “Silent Hill: Shattered Memories,” now available for the Nintendo Wii. Much to my surprise, Konami’s latest is an effective, atmospheric title with only a few flaws.
As franchises like “Resident Evil” have effectively moved to the next generation consoles, “Silent Hill” has been stuck in neutral, arguably in reverse, for a few years now. The first three “Silent Hill” games are some of the best-reviewed of the last ten years, but the fourth title “The Room” started the slide and recent games like “Silent Hill Origins” and “Silent Hill Homecoming” have been complete duds.

Those recent titles failed because they lacked focus.

The original "Silent Hill" is a bona fide classic. It isn't the first example of a survival horror game, but it's one of the best. And it spawned a series that still continues to today, right up to Konami's recently released "Silent Hill: Shattered Memories." A return to the first game's story, "Shattered Memories" allows players to relive the initial trip to that creepy town with new, Wii-powered visuals and a fresh approach to the gameplay.
The Basics
"Silent Hill: Shattered Memories" is essentially a rehash of the first game. The setup is at least: Harry Mason and his daughter Cheryl are knocked out in a car crash at the opening. When Harry comes to, Cheryl is gone and his memory is fuzzy, confused. From there, the story veers sharply off course as players investigate the town of Silent Hill in their search for the missing child.

The biggest question about Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is why it has that name. It’s billed as a “re-imagining” of the first title in the groundbreaking psychological horror franchise, but that’s a bit generous—it revisits the premise of Harry Mason’s search for his missing child following a car crash, but otherwise, there’s little to recognize. Even the titular town, known for being alternately foggy and rusty, has been reconceptualized as a town of perpetual snow that ices over when things get scary. And things get wonderfully scary. Shattered Memories accomplishes a significant feat in making ...

The Silent Hill legacy continues, this time on the Nintendo Wii. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories , arriving December 8, is a redo of the original game that started it all. You play Harry Mason, a man searching for his daughter through the snowy streets of the haunted Silent Hill where he will encounter a cast of characters. This time, however, players are equipped with only a flashlight and cell phone to get story information, solve puzzles and navigate the darkness while escaping the demons that lurk among them. In addition, a psych-profiling feature has been added to analyze players and adjust itself to their actions.
