Helen Mirren is sharing her thoughts on playing a Jewish character as a non-Jewish actress.
The 78-year-old Oscar-winner has been facing criticism surrounding her role as former Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir in the upcoming film Golda. Some have expressed opposition to Helen portraying a Jewish person.
Keep reading to find out how Helen responded…
Helen told the Radio Times that “the whole issue of casting has exploded out of the water fairly recently”.
She added, “I’ve had other Jewish roles [in Woman in Gold and The Debt], but not an uber-Jewish role like Golda Meir. I did tell [director Guy Nattiv] that I’m not Jewish, in case he thought I was.”
Helen said that Guy, who is Jewish, did not express any concern with her casting.
“I said, ‘If that’s an issue, I’ll step away, no problem.’ But he said, ‘No, it’s not an issue.

Helen Mirren thinks it is “ridiculous” that writers are being told to stay in their lanes.
The Oscar-winning actress has railed against the idea that writers can only tell stories about their own race or religion after the so-called “Jewface” row over her new movie Golda.
“It’s more frightening for a writer to be told they are not allowed to write about subjects with which they don’t have an immediate DNA connection,” Mirren told the Radio Times. “I imagine it must be very alarming. And ridiculous.”
Mirren was responding to a statement from Golda writer Nicholas Martin, who said there is a “creeping authoritarianism” in the entertainment industry, leading to writers being told they “cannot do this or that.” He told the Radio Times: “Am I just supposed to write about middle-aged men living in south London?”

The new biographical drama “Golda” features Helen Mirren in a transformative role as Golda Meir, the so-called “Iron Lady of Israel” who faced high-stakes responsibilities and decisions during the Yom Kippur War. Written by Nicholas Martin and directed by Guy Nattiv, the Bleecker Street contender is Mirren’s first big play at a potential Academy Award nomination in many years, so let’s look back at her four Oscar races.
With a career in film going back to the 1960s, Mirren saw her first Oscar nomination in 1994 in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in “The Madness of King George.” Directed by Nicholas Hytner, this biographical comedy-drama tells the story of King George III and how his Lieutenants tried to adjust the rules to run the country after he went mad. Mirren played his wife, Queen Charlotte, and she was one of four citations for the movie at the 67th Academy Awards,...

“Golda” looks to do the unthinkable – to portray Golda Meir, the fourth Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974, not as a historical figure but as a flesh-and-blood person. And what’s more, the movie hinges on the Yom Kippur War, an armed conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states (including Egypt), which puts Golda (played elegantly by Helen Mirren) in a pressure cooker. It’s incredible just how much you learn about her given the movie’s strict parameters.
As directed by Guy Nattiv, it’s a tense and unnerving history lesson, one that keeps you riveted throughout. And with Mirren as Golda, who at the time was secretly ailing, the conflict has a very human face. Nattiv gives the movie immediacy and draws parallels to what’s going on today.

When we see Dame Helen Mirren as Golda, no one should raise any doubts about what proves to be the most natural casting for Golda. I was fortunate and grateful to have helped the brilliant and dedicated screenwriter Nicholas Martin with sharing my memories and thoughts and insights about my late grandmother, Golda Meir, around the Yom Kippur War and other times, her personality, and her many other facets. I read the script at different stages, and we had many wonderful discussions. One day, the question of casting came up.

Growing up in Israel, Guy Nattiv knew one narrative about Golda Meir, the country’s prime minister from 1969-1974. “She was the pariah of Israel,” says Nattiv. “Everyone treated her like she’s a monster.” Unlike other historical figures, there were no parks or schools named after Israel’s first (and only) female prime minister. The vitriol stemmed largely from her administration’s handling of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a devastating conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states that resulted in thousands of deaths.
It was only about 10 years ago, when top secret government documents were declassified, that the world, and Nattiv, began to learn the truth about what really went on during those tense days. “We got a totally different story about this woman and a glimpse of all the faults and fuckups of the other men around her,” says Nattiv. “We understood she took the...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on August 25th, reviewing “Golda,” set in a tense period in the career of 1970s Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. In theaters on August 25th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The film primarily deals with the decision making process of Golda Meir (Helen Mirren) during the Yom Kippur War, a 19-day conflict pitting Egypt, Syria and other Arab countries against Israel in the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights … which Israel had occupied since the 1967 Six-Day war. To make matters worse, it was a surprise attack on the Holy Day of Yom Kippur. The fighting generated many casualties, which Prime Minister Meir would dutifully record in her diary. The cease fire was partially brokered by Henry Kissinger (Liev Scrieiber) and the Arab successes allowed for the concessions that would eventually lead to the historic peace deal in 1978.
”Golda” in theaters on August 25th.

Helen Mirren portrays Golda Meir, Israel’s first women prime minister, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, in Golda. Internationally, Golda Meir is known as the “Iron Lady of Israel” and is an admired figure but she is more controversial in her home country of Israel. In the British historical drama Golda, Israeli-American director Guy Nativ and British scriptwriter Nicholas Martin aim to offer a fresh look at Golda Meir by focusing on her during the Yom Kippur War, when Israel found itself facing two invading armies, from Egypt in the Sinai and Syria in the Golan Heights.

Guy Nattiv, the director of the upcoming film ‘Golda’, has shared that the titular character of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir didn’t have the vision of how to make peace rather than war and terror. In the film, the titular character will be essayed by Helen Mirren.
The biopic highlights the arduous journey of Israel’s first and only female Prime Minister through the heart-wrenching Yom Kippur War of 1973.
The film has been helmed by Oscar winning Director Guy Nattiv, and takes a deep dive into the personal and professional struggles of Israel’s Iron Lady as she navigates the unruly trenches of politics.

You won’t want to miss Helen Mirren’s transformation into Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the new trailer for “Golda.”
Directed by Guy Nattiv and written by Nicholas Martin, “Golda” concerns the 19-day Yom Kippur War waged over territory that Israel had previously annexed and how the conflict became a proxy war between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Yom Kippur War saw Israelis recognizing that there was little guarantee that they could dominate the Arab states militarily, as they had done in previous Arab–Israeli Wars. The conflict slowly paved the way for the Israeli–Palestinian peace process. The 1978 Camp David Accords saw Israel return the entire Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The subsequent 1979 Egyptian–Israeli peace treaty marked the first instance of an Arab country recognizing Israel as a legitimate state.

Helen Mirren hasn’t played that many historical characters in her storied career. But somehow when she has, she not only brings exemplary acting skill but also an imposing regality, obviously handy when she’s playing monarchs like queens Elizabeth I and II as well as Catherine the Great. That said, surely I’m not the only viewer who has felt that sometimes her portrayals of, say, Alma Hitchcock (in Hitchcock) or Hedda Hopper (Trumbo) are flattering to the women she’s impersonating because Mirren, in addition to being a great performer, is and always has been a great beauty. Her Elizabeth I in The Audience and The Queen, both written by The Crown’s creator Peter Morgan, is the Og screen Lilibet — wry, haughty … and too glam by half, even in a dowdy Barbour jacket and headscarf. Cheekbones will out.

Defending her conduct during the Yom Kippur War before a panel of graying men, Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir (Helen Mirren) takes the half-smoked cigarette already dangling from her lips and, instinctually but not all absentmindedly, uses it to light another. This idiosyncratic character beat arrives early in Guy Nattiv’s ho-hum biopic, and speaks volumes about story and subject, telling all you need to know about Meir the person and “Golda” the film.
That Golda’s a smoker should come as no shock; nearly everyone is in this period accurate window into 1973. What sets the Prime Minister apart is her doggedness – her clarity of purpose and tenacity of intent. This cancer-struck icon makes a point to light up each time she undergoes radiation treatment, smoking less...

War is coming in Guy Nattiv’s Golda, onscreen and off. But despite the media’s best efforts to turn the casting of British, non-Jewish actor Helen Mirren as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir into an explosive example of cultural appropriation, both Nattiv’s direction and Mirren’s performance are low-key and careful enough to rise above the controversy. In retrospect, it does seem a little strange that no other candidate was deemed suitable, and the movie won’t do much extra business on account of Mirren’s star power, but those anticipating a tone-deaf disaster will be sorely disappointed.
Golda very much exists in the slipstream of two last-decade biopics, The Iron Lady and Darkest Hour, both humanizing studies of seemingly indomitable famous politicians. Mirren’s casting as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir ignited debate over non-Jewish people playing Jewish roles.
Golda director Guy Nattiv has addressed the debate around the casting of non-Jews in Jewish roles, saying ahead of the film’s Berlinale world premiere that UK actor Mirren has “got the Jewish chops to portray Golda”.
Mirren, who is not Jewish, plays Israel’s only female prime minister, Golda Meir, as she leads her country through the Yom Kippur War of 1973, a conflict between Israel and a coalition of Arab states led by Egypt and Syria.

Playing Golda Meir, says Helen Mirren, was not unlike playing the queen.
Not Queen Elizabeth II, the role that won Mirren the Oscar in 2007 for The Queen. But her earlier namesake, Queen Elizabeth I, which she played in a mini-series of the same name for HBO in 2005.
“[Golda] was extraordinary brave and her commitment to Isreal was total,” said Mirren. “It was a bit like playing Elizabeth the first of England, in the sense [of] her commitment to her country and to her nation. She achieved it without being the sort of power mad sort of dictator character. She was very maternal. She had that wonderful domestic side to her. She was happiest when she was on the kibbutz looking after the chickens, but life took her on a different path.”
That different path is the focus of Golda, the new drama from Israeli director Guy Nattiv (Skin), which had its world premiere Monday,...

Oscar-winning actor Helen Mirren refused to address the controversy around her casting as Israel’s iconic Prime Minister Golda Meir in Guy Nattiv’s biopic during the movie’s press conference at the Berlinale.
When asked to comment on the backlash and the issue of authentic casting, Mirren left it to Nattiv and her co-star Lior Ashkenazi (“Footnote”) to stand up for her while she smiled shyly.
Mirren is neither Israeli nor Jewish, and critics have argued that she shouldn’t have been cast as Israel’s most important female figure.
Nattiv said that when he met Mirren, he instantly felt like he was in the presence of a “family member” — an “aunt” who had the “Jewish chops to portray Golda.”
“We spoke about that for hours. She totally got everything, every nook and cranny, everything in this character,” he continued. Surrounding Mirren with an Israeli cast was a crucial step,...

Israeli director Guy Nattiv has defended his casting of non-Jewish actress Helen Mirren as iconic Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in his biopic Golda, which world premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Monday.
UK actress Maureen Lipman kicked off a debate around the issue in early 2022 when she publicly criticized the casting of Mirren in the role of Meir.
She said the stateswoman’s Jewishness was “integral” to her character and commented that Ben Kingsley would never have been cast to play Nelson Mandela. Mirren later said that Lipman had a point.
Talking at the film’s Berlin press conference, Nattiv said he had instinctively felt Mirren was right for the role from their very first meeting.
“I can tell it from my point of view as a director. When I met Helen in my house, I felt like I was meeting a family member, like an aunt. I...

Skin is a subject Israeli-American director Guy Nattiv touches on frequently in his work. He has directed no fewer than two (unrelated) films titled “Skin,” one feature-length, one short. The former, which premiered in Toronto in 2018, saw Jamie Bell win rave reviews as a white supremacist who tortuously has his tattoos lasered off after managing to break away from the Neo-Nazi cult that raised him. The latter, which Nattiv produced alongside his wife, Jaime Ray Newman, won the Oscar for live action short in 2019.
Now Nattiv returns with “Golda,” his first feature since Toronto and another character study, this time of Israel’s fourth prime minister, Golda Meir, who is played by Helen Mirren. The film, which also stars Liev Schreiber and Camille Cottin, is set during the 1973 Yom Kippur war, when a coalition of Arab states launched a surprise attack on Israel on the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

One month after “The Pianist” actress Maureen Lippman criticized the casting around upcoming biopic “Golda,” lead star Helen Mirren is addressing the controversy.
Lippman wrote an op-ed letter to The Guardian on January 12 to clarify her comments surrounding Mirren taking on the role of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, despite not being Jewish herself.
“Helen will be great. Good actress, sexy and intelligent. Looks the part. [But] my opinion, and that’s what it is, a mere opinion, is that if the character’s race, creed or gender drives or defines the portrayal then the correct — for want of an umbrella [term] — ethnicity should be a priority,” Lippman said. “The Jewishness of the character is so integral. I’m sure she will be marvelous, but it would never be allowed for Ben Kingsley to play Nelson Mandela. You just couldn’t even go there.”

Updated with producer’s statement, 9.50 Am Pt: Florence Foster Jenkins producers Pathe and Qwerty Films have issued a response to Monday’s court verdict that saw opera singer Julia Kogan granted a co-writer credit on the movie and compensation.
“We regret that Julia Kogan’s dispute with Nick Martin over authorship of the screenplay for Florence Foster Jenkins could not be resolved out of court,” they said. “Nick believed that he was the sole author of the screenplay and the court found that Pathé and Qwerty had no reason to doubt his word.
“The judge also found that in the circumstances there was no criticism of Pathé or Qwerty for the fact that Julia had not been accorded a co-author credit on the film’s release. As requested by the court, the credits that appear on the Internet Movie Database are being amended to state that the screenplay was written...
