With the 96th Academy Awards now only a month away, each weekend brings a new award show that reveals a new look at the shape of the Oscar race. Tonight, the auteurs behind some of 2023’s biggest films gathered at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles to celebrate the craft of filmmaking at the Directors Guild of America Awards.
Martin Scorsese, Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Alexander Payne were nominated for the night’s top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, with Oscar frontrunner Nolan walking away with the coveted trophy. Celine Song, Cord Jefferson, A.V. Rockwell, Manuela Martelli, and Noora Niasari competed for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film, which ultimately went to Song.
The show celebrated some of the best directors working in television, with awards in a variety of categories ranging from TV dramas and sitcoms to commercials and reality TV.

Christopher Nolan has won the feature-film prize from the Directors Guild of America for “Oppenheimer,” reinforcing his film’s status as the heavy favorite this awards season. The honor went to Nolan at the end of the 76th annual DGA Awards, which took place on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
In the other film categories, Celine Song won the award for first-time directing for her gentle drama “Past Lives” and Mstyslav Chernov won the documentary award for “20 Days in Mariupol,” his on-the-ground report from the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Peter Hoar won the drama-series award for “The Last of Us,” in a category in which the other four nominees were all from different episodes of “Succession.”

“Oppenheimer” director Christopher Nolan, Christopher Storer of FX’s “The Bear” and Peter Hoar of HBO’s “The Last of Us” were the top winners Saturday night at the Directors Guild of America’s 76th annual DGA Awards.
The DGA win seals Nolan’s frontrunner position to land the director Oscar at the March 10 Academy Awards. Celine Song took home the DGA medallion for first-time director for her much-praised A24 drama “Past Lives.” “Guys, this is so amazing,” Song told the crowd.
Judd Apatow hosted the three-hour ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The multi-hyphenate opened his monologue with a zinger rooted in the DGA’s image as being friendly with the studio CEOs and its history of never mounting a significant strike against Hollywood’s major studios. Apatow joked that his agents told him to hold out for more money for his fifth time as host of the DGA ceremony.

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).
This year, just three of the DGA’s nominees also reaped directing Oscar bids: Yorgos Lanthimos...

Because the Primetime Emmys and the DGA Awards are operating on two different schedules, nominations often have little overlap. However, with the Director Guild of America (DGA) coincidentally releasing the TV nominations for its DGA Awards the same week as the postponed 75th Primetime Emmys, it’s become even more noticeable the ways in which the two awards bodies aligned and differed on shows from 2023.
For instance, DGA Awards favorite “Succession” once again dominates the Drama Series category, receiving four nominations (one less than the last time the show was eligible). While the guild was on the same page about honoring directors Andrij Parekh and Mark Mylod (a past winner) for their work on the fourth and final season of the HBO awards juggernaut, DGA voters opted to recognize Becky Martin and duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for their “Succession” Season 4 episodes over Lorene Scafaria, the show’s...

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 76th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by three-time winner Bill Hader and installments of the third and final season of HBO’s “Succession,” which claimed four of the five Drama Series nomination slots – the fifth going to an episode of fellow HBO hour “The Last of Us.”
The Comedy Series nomination lineup features the directors of a pair of episodes of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” along with two installments of FX’s “The Bear” (including a repeat nomination for showrunner Christopher Storer – the acclaimed “Fishes” edition from Season 2 of the series – and a first for comedian and actor Ramy Youssef).

The Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry” also scored multiple bids in the Movies For Television/Limited Series category with three.

Succession may have wrapped its Emmy-winning four- season run, but feelings from the May 29 series finale linger. Viewers of the Roy family saga were left haunted by the final boardroom face-off among siblings Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin), with many wondering how each could have gone on to pick up the pieces after the Jesse Armstrong-created series faded to black. Longtime director Mark Mylod admits he, too, finds himself thinking about the trio as he shares some insight into the character endings while chatting about the show’s record-breaking 27 Emmy nominations.

Meanwhile, Logan gives an impromptu pep talk to the Atn newsroom…and outsources a tricky conversation with Kerry (Zoe Winters). Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Season 4, Episode 2 of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max.
Kerry Castellabate is the most ambitious assistant on “Succession.” She’s been hovering over Logan Roy’s (Brian Cox) shoulder since Season 2, and now she’s making a play at being an Atn news anchor as a major presidential election looms. Unfortunately, Kerry’s inexperience makes her as more of a laughingstock among the Roy family than a serious power player.
As played by actor Zoë Winters, Kerry has some breakout moments in Sunday night’s episode of “Succession.” On the news front at Waystar Royco, Logan rallies the Atn troops during a surprise visit, after Kerry has filmed test footage of herself as a newscaster. Her tryout is rough, to say the least. She stumbles over her words, and can’t seem to figure out what to do with her arms, as Greg (Nicholas Braun) later points out.

Exclusive: Avenue 5‘s space voyage may be coming to an end. Season 2 of Armando Iannucci’s space comedy, delayed by the pandemic, has not been scheduled yet. I hear it will likely launch in the fall and is expected to be the series’ last. A rep for HBO declined comment.
This is not surprising. Season 1 of Avenue 5, Iannucci’s followup series to the Emmy-winning Veep, premiered in January 2020 and was renewed for a second season in February of that year, just a couple of weeks before the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Filming on the new season, delayed by Covid, finally got underway in August 2021 and wrapped in November.
Given the time that has passed, the options on the cast, led by Hugh Laurie, came up, and the actors were released, sources tell Deadline. Some of them have moved on, signing as series regulars on new shows.

HBO has renewed the Hugh Laurie-headlined chaotic space comedy, Avenue 5, for a second season.
Avenue 5 Season 2 is officially on HBO’s proverbial cruise itinerary.
While the freshman HBO sci-fi comedy series, the latest brainchild of Veep creator Armando Ianucci, crosses the midway point of its January 19-launched nine-episode inaugural season, the premium cable channel has seen enough from it to greenlight Avenue 5 for a second season. The outer-space ensemble series, set 40 years in the future, is headlined by former House star (and Veep vet) Hugh Laurie, who plays Ryan Clark, the figurehead actor captain of the titular leisure space vessel that, due to a disaster, is forced to endure a three-year voyage home.
As Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, expresses in a statement:

The outer-space ensemble series, set 40 years in the future, is headlined by former House star (and Veep vet) Hugh Laurie, who plays Ryan Clark, the figurehead actor captain of the titular leisure space vessel that, due to a disaster, is forced to endure a three-year voyage home.
As Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, expresses in a statement:
“We’ve loved every minute of Avenue 5’s inaugural voyage,” adding, “Armando Iannucci and his team are...

On the heels of the launch of season 1, HBO has renewed comedy series Avenue 5 for a second season.
“We’ve loved every minute of Avenue 5’s inaugural voyage,” says Amy Gravitt, Evp HBO Programming. “Armando Iannucci and his team are masters of smart and incisive comedy, and the ensemble cast, brilliantly captained by Hugh Laurie, is second to none. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for our hapless heroes in season two.”
Created and executive produced by Veep creator Iannucci, Avenue 5 is set forty years in the future when traveling the solar system is no longer the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, but a booming, multibillion-dollar business. The series kicked off its nine-episode first season January 19.

More marvelous news for Amy Sherman-Palladino: The “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creator is the odds-on favorite to win the Director Guilds Award Saturday for comedy directing, according to our predictions. If she does triumph, she’ll be the fifth woman — all in the last six years — to win that honor.
Sherman-Palladino, who’s up for helming the pilot, has 5/6 combined User, Expert and Editors odds. She’s just ahead of Melina Matsoukas (21/10 odds), who’s contending for “Thanksgiving” from “Master of None.” Beth McCarthy-Miller (“Chicklet” from “Veep”) is third with 11/1 odds, followed by Aziz Ansari (“The Thief” from “Master of None) with 20/1 odds and Mike Judge (“Server Error” from “Silicon Valley”) with 80/1 odds.

McCarthy-Miller is one of the previous female winners in this category; she prevailed for her work on the “30 Rock” series finale “Hogcock!”/”Last Lunch” four years ago.

Over the weekend, a trio of big precursors announced their winners. Specifically, it was late Saturday night and the precursors in question were the Directors Guild of America, the American Society of Cinematographers, and the Annie Awards. They continue to move this season along towards its end point. There’s still some big precursors coming our way, though these were notable in their own right, especially DGA, which is one of the biggest each season. Two of the three went as expected, while one provided an upset. Read on to see which was which, and sit tight for more precursors in the final days and weeks before the big show… Of main note were Damien Chazelle continuing his all but undefeated run with a win at the DGA awards. He’s now all but a lock in Best Director at the Oscars. The Asc result was a bit surprising though,...

Today may be Big Game Sunday, but the Atlanta Falcons aren’t the only ones getting trophies this weekend. Last night, the Directors Guild Of America held its annual DGA Awards event, and at the risk of diminishing the importance of this particular ceremony, the organization gave a lot of awards to things that have received a lot of awards already.
For example, La La Land and Damien Chazelle won the feature film award, Miguel Sapochnik won the dramatic series award for his work on Game Of Thrones’ “Battle Of The Bastards,” and Becky Martin won the comedy series award for her work on Veep’s “Inauguration” episode. Luckily, the DGA Awards are structured in such a way that La La Land can really only win the one trophy, so the rest of the categories were a little more interesting.

Awards season is really starting to heat up now with the Oscars on the horizon. They’ll take place on February 26th and a clear frontrunner is beginning to emerge in the form of La La Land. The film has been cleaning up for a while and last night, it snagged another big prize, as director Damien Chazelle took home the top honor (Best Feature Film) at the Director’s Guild of America Awards.
Though the 32-year-old faced tough competition in the form of Denis Villeneuve for Arrival, Barry Jenkins for Moonlight, Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester by the Sea, and Garth Davis for Lion, he had no trouble winning over voters and is now a clear favorite as we inch closer to the Oscars. It’s well earned, too, as La La Land is truly an incredible film and Chazelle deserves all the praise he’s getting for it.

The Directors Guild of America handed out their 2017 awards to some of Hollywood’s most accomplished and promising visionaries Feb. 4. There may be only five slots for directors at the Academy Awards, but the 69th annual DGA Awards spread the love across multiple categories, including among its winners Damien Chazelle, Garth Davis, Becky Martin, and Miguel Sapochnik. As voted upon by guild members, the top award—outstanding directorial achievement in a feature—went to Chazelle for “La La Land” (a Lionsgate-distributed film). The writer-director and Golden Globe winner bested Garth Davis for “Lion” (The Weinstein Co.), Barry Jenkins for “Moonlight” (A24), Kenneth Lonergan for “Manchester by the Sea” (Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions), and Denis Villeneuve for “Arrival” (Paramount Pictures). Chazelle’s assistant directors and production managers are included in the honor: Michael Beugg, Peter Kohn, Paula Case, Bart Lipton, Brett Robinson, and Dodi Rubenstein. The inevitable occurred Saturday night as Damien Chazelle accepted the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for “La La Land” from last year’s winner, A.G. Inarritu. The DGA winner is usually a pretty certain match with the Oscar for the Best Director — the winner has not gone on to take the Academy Award only seven times. (The most recent example: in 2012 non-Oscar directing nominee Ben Affleck won the DGA Award for “Argo,” while Ang Lee won the Oscar for “Life of Pi.”)
Chazelle beat fellow first-time DGA and Oscar nominees Barry Jenkins (presented by his charming trio of stars in $1.5 million “Moonlight”), Kenneth Lonergan (introduced by “Manchester By the Sea” star Casey Affleck) and Denis Villeneuve (tributed by Amy Adams of “Arrival”).
“Film is a universal language,” Chazelle said, recalling how the French New Wave directors fell in love with Hollywood sans sub-titles. He also...

First-time nominee cements status as Academy Award favourite.
Directors Guild Of America (DGA) members on Saturday night anointed Damien Chazelle as their director of the year and in so doing confirmed him as the Oscar frontrunner.
Chazelle’s first DGA nomination resulted in a night of triumph and set him on a seemingly unassailable course for the best directing Academy Award on February 26.
The DGA Award is historically a highly reliable indicator of who will win the big prize. In the last decade all but one DGA winner has gone on to claim the Oscar.
The exception was Ben Affleck, who was the guild’s pick for Argo in 2013 and was not even nominated by Academy Award voters. Ang Li took the Oscar for Life Of Pi, although Argo won best picture.
Oscar-nomination Garth Davis was named best first-time director for Lion and Ezra Edelman prevailed in the documentary contest for O.J.: Made In America.

Check out Part 1 and Part 2 of the Best TV Episodes of 2015 (So Far)
Justified, “The Promise”
Written by Graham Yost & Fred Golan & Dave Andron & Benjamin Cavell
Directed by Adam Arkin
Aired April 14th, 2015 on FX
Over the course of its run, Justified established itself as a top tier drama, which meant that expectations were high going into its sixth and final season. The series finale, however, delivered on several fronts, elevating itself into not only a highlight of the show, but a highlight of the television year as a whole to date. The deft manner in which the episode balances its numerous characters is one of the key ways in which it distinguishes itself. While the finale’s most important showdown is the one between Boyd and Raylan, the writers make sure to give the season’s antagonist Avery Markham his due as well, not diminishing the danger he posed by dismissing him easily.

Teleplay by Tony Roche, Andy Riley, and Kevin Cecil, Story by Armando Iannucci, Tony Roche, Andy Riley, and Kevin Cecil
Directed by Becky Martin
Airs Sundays at 10:30pm (Et) on HBO
Putting into motion the Families First bill was one of the first actions Meyer undertook as President. However, a bill she has been proud of and championed has ended up as an albatross on her neck, as the support for the bill has dwindled, with the nickname “Mommy Meyer bill” ending up attached to it. This week sees the bill finally come to a vote, and the administration decides to take the action to try and kill it, a decision that comes with its own set of consequences, exacerbated by Meyer falling ill. The result is a strong episode that delves into how the government works in Veep while still retaining the show’s humour.

Teleplay by Simon Blackwell, Neil Gibbons, and Rob Gibbons, Story by Armando Iannucci, Simon Blackwell, Neil Gibbons, and Rob Gibbons

Throughout her time as Vice-president, Selina Meyer and her staff have had to deal with a number of crises. Meyer’s ascension to Presidency, however, meant that the crises she’d have to deal with were weightier, even if they appeared frivolous, as the issue with the Native American painting last week demonstrated. This week, however, Meyer is faced with an issue that doesn’t get resolved simply by replacing a painting, resulting in a major shakeup in her administration in another solid episode.
The firing of Dan opens up some intriguing possibilities for the rest of the season. Unlike last season, when Dan’s firing as the campaign manager meant...

Girls, “Two Plane Rides”
Written by Lena Dunham
Directed by Lena Dunham
Aired March 23rd, 2014
Do you remember how last season’s Girls run ended? Well this season things culminated in an entirely different tone. This time, there were no grand gestures or fireworks. Season three isn’t quite as dark as season two, but man is the finale rough. If the season two finale frustrated fans because it suggested that Hannah might be too dependent on the man in her life, the season three finale seems intent on underlining that Hannah’s ready to move on, with or without Adam. And she isn’t the only one moving on, but she seems to be the only one moving in the right direction: Hannah gets into the country’s best grad school, Adam gives a truly “bad” performance in his Broadway debut, Marnie finds herself in another destructive relationship, Shosh...

Airs Sundays at 10:30pm (Et) on HBO
Despite running a campaign to become the next presidential candidate, Selina Meyer remains the current vice-president, requiring her to carry out duties of her position concurrently with her campaign. This can often lead to conflicts that require a competent campaign manager to handle, a position Meyer recently filled with Dan. This week’s episode sees Dan deal with numerous issues facing Meyer’s campaign, in another fantastic episode that sees Meyer’s campaign team undergo some major shakeups.
Dan’s panic attack and subsequent firing by Meyer point at interesting directions for the character. Dan’s inability to deal with the ongoing stress of Meyer’s campaign has been a major aspect of the season,...

Teleplay by Georgia Pritchett and Will Smith, Story by Armando Iannucci, Georgia Pritchett, and Will Smith
Directed by Becky Martin
Airs Sundays at 10:30pm (Et) on HBO
Since the beginning of the season, the selection of a campaign manager has been a major decision looming over Selina Meyer. With both Dan and Amy openly vying for the position, and Ben advising Meyer to go with a third party, it was clear the current vice-president was delaying the inevitable. This week’s episode sees Meyer finally make a decision, in a compelling outing that adds new complications to Jonah’s story, as well as Mike and Gary’s.
Selina’s increased disdain for her staff in this week’s episode is an intriguing turn for the character. While it’s clear that Meyer has never had much love for the people she works with,...

Directed by Becky Martin
Airs Sundays at 10:30pm (Et) on HBO
The presidential campaign trail always brings about a number of hot-button issues that candidates find themselves unable to take a stance on, for fear of alienating certain voter demographics. With Meyer already in pre-campaign mode from last week’s episode, and Maddox already in the fray, it was only a matter of time before such an issue became part of this campaign as well, regardless of whether it is formally launched or not. This week’s episode brings such an issue to the forefront in the form of abortion, in another fantastic outing from the show that pushes a member of Meyer’s staff to the edge.

Veep, Season 2, Episode 7: “Shutdown”
Written by Tony Roche and Armando Iannucci
Directed by Becky Martin
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
Despite Selina’s best efforts at balancing the budget last week, efforts that saw her sit down to discuss numbers in the midst of her daughter’s birthday party, the President still went ahead with a government shutdown over manufactured disagreements. This week explores the effects the shutdown has on government, in a compelling yet hilarious display of finger-pointing and political backstabbing that promises long-reaching ramifications for Selina Meyer and her staff.
Watching the political machinations occurring in DC this episode is fascinating to see. Slowly but surely, from several directions, the noose is tightening on Selina Meyer’s political career, and the blame for the government shutdown falling squarely on her may be the beginning of the end for the reigning Vice-President.

Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
Foreign relations are a key aspect of any politician’s job, with the importance of maintaining a good rapport with the international community being the most important aspect of many political positions. With the comedic song about the various European countries that Selina Meyer sang at a private function making its way online last week ahead of a visit to Europe, courtesy of Jonah, the Vice-President’s ability to mend fences was sure to be put to the test, and it is this facet of the office that this episode explores, delivering another strong episode that fleshes out some of the show’s secondary characters.
