What better time to celebrate "Thanksgiving" than midwinter? Eli Roth's latest slasher is officially due out on digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray before the month of January is through, which is good news for horror fans trapped in the doldrums of what is traditionally the worst month for the genre. If you haven't already seen the colonial holiday kill-fest, which was built around a fake movie trailer Roth made for the film "Grindhouse" way back in 2007, you can check it out on premium video on demand now.
You can also watch it for a cheaper price digitally on January 16, 2024, or grab a DVD or Blu-ray version on January 30 -– just make sure to watch out for a mob of shoppers, a la the film's Black Friday-set opening scene. If "Thanksgiving" somehow wasn't on your radar before, here's a quick primer: The movie takes place in the town of Plymouth, Massachusetts,...

Spooky season now extends through the fourth Thursday in November with Thanksgiving, the upcoming slasher from Eli Roth. Sony Pictures has shared its official trailer before it comes to theaters November 17th.
Technically, this could be considered the second Thanksgiving trailer that’s seen the light of day: Back in 2007, Roth made a faux trailer to be presented in the middle of Grindhouse, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s double feature. Also titled Thanksgiving, that hypothetical movie took cues from holiday-themed horror classics like Halloween and My Bloody Valentine, with its killer dressed as a pilgrim.
The 2023 Thanksgiving isn’t quite as obviously indebted to ’70s exploitation flicks, but like its first iteration, it centers around a series of murders in Plymouth, Massachusetts. A year after a local Black Friday sale became a literal bloodbath, the entire town is on edge once again as they attempt to stop the pilgrim-clad killer,...

After a long break from feature films, director Uwe Boll is back and ready to roll with his latest project, a crime drama about two mismatched New York City cops on their first day as partners.
“First Shift” stars Kristen Renton (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Gino Anthony Pesi (“Shades of Blue”) as the badge-carrying duo, she a transplant from Atlanta new to the Big Apple, he a jaded Brooklyn cop who prefers to work alone but forced to take on the new partner.
Set to start shooting in New York City next month, “First Shift” has moved ahead of two other projects Boll has in the works, a South Africa-set thriller and a feature about Prohibition-era federal agent Eliot Ness — famously played by Kevin Costner and Robert Stack in the 1987 film and the 1959 series “The Untouchables” — during the latter part of his career.

Timur Bekmambetov's upcoming horror movie Squirrels has released a new poster.
The movie set social media abuzz earlier this week when a sales trailer for the project began to circulate online.
[via Dark Horizons]
The promo image carries the tagline "hold on to your nuts" with a squirrel chomping on a severed finger.
Squirrels will see flesh-eating rodents strike back at humans after a gas company's disregard for the environment causes an erosion of their food chain.
Wanted's Bekmambetov is trying to raise funds for the project, with Machete's Ethan Maniquis reportedly being lined up as director.

A movie about a swarm of killer squirrels could become the next cult hit, following the immensely successful Sharknado.
According to Bleeding Cool, adequate funds for 'Squirrels' have yet to be raised. However, a trailer has already been produced and released, with Machete's Ethan Maniquis reportedly being lined up as director.
The movie offers the tagline 'Hold Onto Your Nuts', while the advert shows a young girl and her grandmother walking in a park, before approaching a nearby friendly-looking squirrel with a nut.
When the girl gets close to the rodent, it soon leaps onto her and begins attacking her, while her grandmother rushes over, pulls the squirrel off and throws it across the park.
Timur Bekmambetov, who directed Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is reportedly raising funds for the film, which tells the story of a young man who returns home to uncover the mystery surrounding his father's death.

Who among us doesn’t quake in fear at the thought of nature’s most vicious animal – the squirrel? Like a rat glued to a furry caterpillar, its beady eyes glow with malicious intent, its buck teeth eager to gnaw through bone. Okay, squirrels might not be that scary. But Timur Bekmambetov clearly thinks they can be. The Russian-born director (whose English-language outings include Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) and his production company, Bazelevs, have put out a sales trailer for their upcoming tongue-in-cheek horror flick, Squirrels. Check it out after the break. Aside from its overuse of CGI, the trailer really isn’t that bad. Sure, you can predict every beat from the very beginning, but seeing an elderly woman tussle with what is clearly a fake stuffed squirrel (seriously – mediocre CGI may be the latest trend, but for campy horror, there’s nothing better than a mediocre effect) is great, and...

"Machete Kills" is being strangled by a new lawsuit.
Overnight Productions, owner of the action movie "Machete," has filed a $2 million lawsuit against filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's production company, Quick Draw Holdings LLC, and Machete Kills LLC. The suit alleges Rodriguez's company has withheld tax credits and lied about the budget of the upcoming movie "Machete Kills," a sequel to the 2010 mega-hit, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Although defendants have produced the sequel, they have failed to meet a condition precedent to their grant of rights, forcing plaintiffs to terminate the agreement," the lawsuit alleges, THR reports. "Defendants have also failed and refused to provide the required budget information to Overnight Productions so that it can determine the producer fee owed with respect to the sequel. As a result, plaintiffs have been forced to bring this action to confirm the cancellation of the grant of rights and to recover the amounts plaintiffs are owed.

Mel Gibson is in the news again, but not because of a terrifying audio recording. According to Deadline.com, the embattled actor is in talks to join "Machete Kills" for director Robert Rodriguez. The film is a follow-up to Rodriguez's 2010 grindhouse B-movie, "Machete." (THR has also confirmed Mel's involvement.)
Gibson and "Machete" were first associated earlier this month when Deadline.com reported that Rodriguez was looking to cast the 56-year-old actor in his new film, along with Michelle Williams. No word yet if Williams will participate in this bit of genre madness.
"I feel like I really need to get in there and do it," Rodriguez told THR about directing the film himself (the first "Machete" was co-directed by Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis due to scheduling issues). Director Robert Rodriguez wants Gibson for action thriller Machete Kills, according to reports
Mel Gibson is in negotiations to join Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills, a sequel to the bombastic 2010 action thriller about a disgraced Mexican ex-federale with a bad attitude, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
It has not been a good month for the former Hollywood A-lister. Gibson's latest acting project, Get the Gringo, was released straight to view-on-demand in the Us after failing to secure a theatrical run, and he was accused of derailing a planned film about a famous 2nd-century BC Jewish revolt for antisemitic reasons by screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Nevertheless, Rodriguez seems to think Gibson is the man for his latest venture, which he plans to direct himself prior to taking on a sequel to 2005's Sin City.

Mel Gibson is in talks to make a supporting appearance in Robert Rodriguez‘s upcoming sequel Machete Kills, starring Danny Trejo as the titular character. Fox will release the film to the precious few people in the world still interested in a franchise that started as a fun trailer and became an impossibly redundant bore-fest [Deadline].
In this exciting new film, Machete must help the United States track down an arms dealer before he can launch a rocket. Original stuff.
Gibson has been rumored as a possible addition to the franchise for a while now, along with parallel whispers that Michelle Williams (yes, that Michelle Williams) was considering to bow in the sequel. While there’s been little word on Williams (let’s pray that stays true), Gibson appears to be everything but locked in. And, seriously, if you’re Gibson right now, what else do you have going on anyway?...

It can’t be much fun to be Mel Gibson at the moment. He’s still deeply embroiled in a war of words and embarrassing audiotapes, and has seen any sign of a career resurgence falter along with it. But someone still wants to work with him, as Robert Rodriguez has reached out to bring him aboard Machete Kills. The film finds Danny Trejo back as the toughest Federale around, dispatched by the Us government to track down an arms dealer in Mexico before the villain can launch a destructive rocket.Rodriguez is in the process of rounding up as much of the surviving Machete cast as he can, and he has talked before about recruiting both Gibson and Michelle Williams, amongst others. While he co-directed the original with Ethan Maniquis, Rodriguez apparently likes his script for the new movie so much that he wants to do as much of it as he can alone.

As previously reported by THR, Robert Rodriguez is finally set to direct a sequel to Sin City entitled A Dame to Kill For. But before the filmmaker steps back into comic creator Frank Miller’s bleak, black & white world, Rodriguez is scheduled to shoot a different sequel – Machete Kills, a follow-up to his 2010 grindhouse tribute Machete. Although he shared directing duties with Ethan Maniquis on the original, he told THR he’d like to take Machete Kills on by himself, if possible. “Currently I am directing it,” Rodriguez said during an interview about the Blu-ray release

You can't stop Machete. Or Machete's women.
While Danny Trejo may be the only actor officially signed on for the "Machete" sequel, at least two of his co-stars from the original film are in talks to return for more Mexican mayhem, according to The Playlist.
Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez are poised to reprise their roles from the 2010 film directed by Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez, a feature-length "Mexploitation" flick spawned from the mock trailer that appeared in the 2007 double feature, "Grindhouse." Alba played Sartana, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who ended up assisting (and falling for) the disgraced Federale, and Michelle Rodriguez played Luz, a taco truck proprietor who was later revealed to be a legendary revolutionary.
The sequel, "Machete Kills," finds Machete hired by the U.S. government to take down both a Mexican cartel leader and madman billionaire who plan to launch a weapon into space.

Director Robert Rodriguez has been promising a sequel to his beloved 2005 neo-noir "Sin City" for so long that it began to fall into the "we'll believe it when we see it" category. But the dream is now a reality. Just in time for Efm it was announced that Robert Rodriguez is teaming with producer Alexander Rodnyansky for the promised sequel to the 2010 action film Machete. Now that the Berlin market is in full gear, some early sales art has leaked online. Titled Machete Kills (as teased in the closing credits of the first Machete), the film is the second in a planned trilogy. Danny Trejo returns as the title character. Ethan Maniquis co-directed the first film that starred Trejo as Machete is a Mexican, an ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, and is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator.

The end credits of Machete hinted at the possibility of not one but two sequels, although at the time it was unclear if this was merely a joke or if it was for real. However, when you consider that the movie itself was a self-fulfilling prophecy that grew out of a fake trailer created for Grindhouse, it only makes sense that both Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again would eventually become a reality as well. That being said, it is a little bit surprising that they are happening so soon. For a guy who has been attached to so many different projects over the past few years, you'd think that Robert Rodriguez would be far too busy to bother with another Machete movie right now. That doesn't appear to be the case, as it is now being reported that the first sequel will begin shooting as early as this April.

Robert Rodriguez’s next film will be Machete Kills, a sequel to his 2010 Grindhouse B-movie starring Danny Trejo that will shoot in April, according to Deadline.
Kyle Ward (writer of in-development Kane & Lynch) has completed the follow-up screenplay that he has been developing with Rodriguez & Marcel Rodriguez, with Trejo in talks to reprise the R-rated title character.
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”
The sequel will find Machete hired by the U.S. government and ordered to travel down to Mexico to battle a madman cartel and eccentric billionaire arms dealer who wants to start World War III. Sounds like a plot for a James Bond movie and wouldn’t you know it, just like Moonraker took James Bond into space,...

Ethan Maniquis co-directed the first film that starred Trejo as Machete is a Mexican, an ex-Federale with a gift for wielding a blade, who hides out as a day laborer, and is double-crossed by a corrupt state senator. The film will be the first U.S. picture to be produced and financed by Alexander Rodnyansky, whose Hollywood expansion plans include a $120 million film fund with Media Talent Groups Geyer Kosinski.

Writer-actress Yvonne Delarose is suing the directors of ‘Machete,’ Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis, for stealing her ideas for the action-revenge film, TMZ is reporting. Delarose filed the lawsuit in L.A. County Superior Court, claiming Maniquis solicited her for ideas in 2005 for a movie about a man who goes on a killing spree with a machete. The lawsuit also states the directors used her ideas without paying her. Delarose is suing the two filmmakers for break of contract, and is seeking unspecified damages. She said she shared her characters and storylines, thinking she’d be compensate, but never was. When ‘Machete’ was released in 2010, the writer said it contained...

Directors Robert Rodriguez and Ethan Maniquis have been named in a new breach of contract lawsuit over allegations they stole the idea for their 2010 movie Machete.
Yvonne Delarosa claims she met with Maniquis in 2005 and shared her plot ideas for a movie about a man who seeks revenge by embarking on a killing spree with a machete.
According to her legal documents, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, her storyline then became the basis for the filmmakers' bloody action movie starring Danny Trejo as Machete Cortez - but she didn't receive any money for the project.
Delarosa is now suing for unspecified damages, reports TMZ.com.

Another bumper edition- I hereby pledge never to write several 2000 word reviews a week while neglecting this beautiful little column- with three weeks worth of viewing listed below.
An added element to the Film Diary this time around is the sub-challenge A Disney A Day, instigated at the behest of my girlfriend, who discovered that between us we now own every Disney home release- except the somewhat controversial Song of the South (which, despite featuring one of Disney’s most released soundtrack songs, is yet to see a DVD release)- and has decided that it would be a missed opportunity not to watch all of them as quickly as possible. Seems my spirit may have rubbed off there a little…

Director: Robert Rodriguez & Ethan Maniquis. Review: Adam Wing. The Tarantino/ Rodriguez Grindhouse double feature was a mixed bag, but Planet Terror was a whole lot more fun than Quentin’s overlong road rage horror Death Proof. If you’ve experienced Grindhouse as it’s meant to be seen, then you’re already aware of the hilarious mock trailers that separate the two pictures - Machete was probably the best of the bunch, though I still have a soft spot for Thanksgiving. Rodriguez regular Danny Trejo stars as the cleaver-wielding Mexican, double-crossed, left for dead and out for revenge. The trailer proved so popular, not least with Rodriguez, that a return to Grindhouse territory was inevitable. Teaming up with long-term collaborator Ethan Maniquis, Robert Rodriquez returns to the world of Machete, bringing a dynamite cast along for the ride. Rodriguez wastes no time out of the blocks, and the opening stampede...

This is the Pure Movies review for Machete directed by Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez, and starring Danny Trejo, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal, Michelle Rodriguez, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Shea Whigham, Lindsay Lohan, Daryl Sabara, Gilbert Trejo, Ara Celi, Tom Savini and Billy Blair. For those who saw the fake trailers interposed between Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double-feature and thought, ‘I want to see those films, right now’, you are in luck. Firstly, because you got to see Planet Terror and Death Proof in their intended form instead of the hastily separated-and-extended cuts for UK release (or you know how to use Youtube), and secondly because Robert Rodriguez has only gone and made one.

After causing a storm as a faux-trailer in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse, Machete finally makes it to the big screen as a feature-length movie filled with bullets, boobs and bloodshed! Danny Trejo plays the titular character – a bad-ass Mexican federale turned mercenary, turned hero who – after seeing his wife brutally murdered and himself left for dead – is set up for the assassination of a Us Senator by a cadre of corrupt officials intent on ridding the south of illegal immigrants. Chicago – “Machete” may be one of the most wonderfully-conceived films of 2010. The idea that one of the fake trailers from “Grindhouse” could ever become a full-length film is a movie lover’s dream come true (and it’s so ironic that “Machete” grossed more domestically than the movie that spawned it). While I love the very existence of “Machete,” the movie itself is something of a disappointment, and it’s not helped by a mediocre Blu-ray that barely has any special features.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0
Robert Rodriguez is an undeniably-talented man with great ideas but little concept of pacing and an inability to edit his own material down to a reasonable slice of entertainment. There’s a lot to like here and it’s better to be able to watch it at home in installments but Rodriguez has no idea when to quit.

Machete
Directed by: Robert Rodriguez, Ethan Maniquis
Cast: Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Robert De Niro
Running Time: 1 hr 45m
Rating: R
Due Out: January 4, 2011
Plot: After being betrayed by the outfit that hired him, an ex-Federale (Trejo) kicks off a merciless rampage of revenge against his former boss.
Who’S It For? Fans of Director Robert Rodriguez’ more overzealously realized films, a la Planet Terror, Sin City, Once Upon a Time in Mexico and films of their ilk.
Movie:
Machete is ultra-violent and hammed-up to the maximum. It’s hilarious, and sexy, and filled to the brim with energy. It’s a lot of goofy fun, and succeeds entirely at being that which it so badly wanted to be.
I feel as though exercises like Machete live and die by how seriously they take themselves — this film manages to be self-aware, exploitative, politically slanted through mad hyperbole,...

Machete
Directed by Robert Rodriguez and co-director Ethan Maniquis
Three years after he was forced to watch the murder of his wife and is betrayed by the organization who hired him, an ex-Federale (Danny Trejo) launches a brutal rampage of revenge against his former boss and a Texas senator (Robert De Niro) who fights to stop illegal immigration.
It took three years, but Machete, whose fake trailer showcased before the B-picture homage Grindhouse, finally hit the cineplex. Anyone who found themselves excited by that teasing coming attraction will no doubt be satiated by the relentless onslaught of over-the-top violence, extreme gore, unnecessary nudity and cheap laughs that directors Rodriguez and Maniquis deliver in it’s full-length incarnation. Sugarcoat it with a dose of political satire and Machete is everything The Expendables should have been – self-aware,...

The Film:
It will be defined by the audience’s own personal acceptance of how many over-the-top scenes they can handle, yet the fact that it titters on this edge isn’t really the point. Based on a silly faux-trailer from Grindhouse, Machete is far more than the steroid-fused action it promised, mixing it up with some poignant depth at a critical juncture in Mexico today, Machete is an action classic. Danny Trejo channels the spirit and attitude of Che Guevara in the body of an ’80s action star, in a film that can only best be described as a Hispanic Commando.
For all of the great action, tough guy one-liners, violence, sex, Machete feels like a summer film directed by Sam Fuller. And that’s something, in this seen-it-all world of Hollywood, we didn’t expect.
For the love of 42nd Street, Machete just needed to be fun, even if it was stupid.

Whoa, what a way to start the new year! After several weeks of desolate conditions in terms of horror title releases, the floodgate just burst open.
This is the week you may want to think about using up those giftcards and cash you got from returning your holiday presents. Major releases are vying for your greenbacks alongside re-releases in Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D (in case Santa brought you a 3D TV recently), and other more independent titles. In addition to movies, there's also a Buffy motion comic and the next volume of a vampire's diary in paperback.
The Last Exorcism (Review)

For those that might have missed director Robert Rodriguez and co-director Ethan Maniquis' Machete the ending teased two possible sequels: Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again. While the sequel titles seemed like nothing more than amusing hubris used to end the movie, actor Danny Trejo told The Press Association that a sequel has already been written.
"I asked [Rodriguez] when he was going to write it and he says it's written, so we can get started pretty quick," said Trejo, who admitted that both he and Rodriguez were surprised by the positive response to the movie.

Sequel time: Star Trek 2 and Machete Kills couldn't be more different, but since there's a slight bit of news about the screenplay progress for each of them, why not make a little sandwich post? First up, Machete star Danny Trejo has told Bloody Disgusting [1] that Robert Rodriguez tells him the script for Machete Kills is done. Don't believe me? It's right here: "I asked him when he was going to write it and he says it's written, so we can get started pretty quick." Since the end credits of the first film promised a second (and third) James Bond-style, this isn't a huge surprise. (The director previously said, "Once you put it out there, just like we found with the trailer, you have to make it.") But Robert Rodriguez has to finish the fourth Spy Kids movie before anything else. And given that Machete did respectable but far from outrageously good numbers,...

Unstoppable (12A)
(Tony Scott, 2010, Us) Denzel Washington, Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, Ethan Suplee, Kevin Dunn. 98 mins
This literally one-track action thriller is the perfect fit for Scott, Hollywood's master of manliness and heavy machinery. Everyone knows where it's going but it's got enough momentum to smash through to the finish, and the purity of the premise is a good fit with Scott's visual excess.
