- Worked as arranger for Benny Goodman and Lawrence Welk's TV show. Prior to that was musical director for CBS radio in Chicago (1940-45). Ten years in New York as musical associate for Paul Whiteman at ABC radio. Formed his own band in the 1950's, recording for RCA and Columbia. At one time voted best swing band by Downbeat Magazine. Maltby had solid hits with "St. Louis Blues Mambo" and "Themes from The Man With the Golden Arm" (top 20).
