Hollywood’s biggest night (that isn’t the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards) is coming up, with the 96th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday, March 10. Of course, many Oscar-nominated filmmakers began their careers in independent film. So! This week we’re taking a look back at some of the best Film Independent moments from this year’s Oscar nominees. First up: Oppenheimer composer Ludwig Göransson brings Black Panther to Beverly Hills.

Entering the Film Independent Presents special event An Evening With Ludwig Göransson on January 15, attendees to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills found a stage set with multiple instruments arranged for performance. Chatting before the show, a fellow composer agreed that the scene seemed to set up for African percussion, some sort of guitar band and a string section (which turned out to be a quintet.) The eclectic mix of instruments seemed a good...

Marvel operates under top secret protocols to protect the sanctity of movie magic. So when Black Panther began taking shape under the direction of Ryan Coogler, it wasn’t just the writers and actors who were tasked with keeping what would become one of the franchise’s most acclaimed films under wraps — but also the producers, composers, and artists who crafted the music that communicated in the film’s score and soundtrack what deep-rooted emotional words could not.

Even if “Black Panther” composer Ludwig Goransson had wanted to rest on his Oscar-winning laurels when returning for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” it wasn’t a possibility. The blockbuster sequel not only introduces a new world to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the undersea kingdom Talokan but also reckons with and responds to the real-world death of star Chadwick Boseman, who died in the summer of 2020.
So Goransson – who traveled to numerous countries during his work on “Wakanda Forever” and spent thousands of hours on the score and songs – wasted little time in letting audiences know up front that the new film would pay tribute to what came before but forge its own path with his music. “The first track of the movie is obviously like a callback to the first movie,” Goransson tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” opens with its characters dressed entirely in white, presenting a stark and symbolic contrast to its blockbuster predecessor that depicted Africa in the brightest of colors.
Angela Bassett solemnly walks down the dirt paths of Wakanda as Queen Ramonda, wearing a white version of her signature isicholo that is almost identical to the one her character wore on the big screen four years ago for the coronation of the son whom she is now burying.
The camera then shifts to Letitia Wright’s Shuri, the princess and prodigy who was once chastised for her tendency to “scoff at tradition,” now wearing a white funeral shroud and tusk earrings while holding the mask of the fallen Black Panther, King T’Challa.

Get ready to rock out to the official motion picture soundtrack for "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings."
When "Black Panther" released its soundtrack in 2018, it incorporated a who's who list of Black musical artists, led by Kendrick Lamar. Its original score, composed by Ludwig Göransson, leaned on traditional African music influences along with Senegalese singer Baaba Maal. "Shang-Chi" is following suit with a soundtrack that aims for its own cultural authenticity. It has roped in Asian and Asian-American artists from around the world to provide the musical texture for Marvel's first Asian-centered superhero movie.

With the coronavirus crisis rapidly unfolding, artists around the globe are coming up with innovative ways to keep the lights on and the music playing — without leaving the house. With this in mind, Rolling Stone has launched a new Igtv performance series, “In My Room.” The debut episode featured Brian Wilson playing his songs from his California home (watch it here).

Blur reunited for the first time in nearly four years for a surprise gig in East London Friday during Damon Albarn’s annual Africa Express concert. Blur last performed together in November 2015 following the release of The Magic Whip.
For the performance, Albarn rejoined his band mates Dave Rowntree, Alex James and Graham Coxon to play “Song 2,” “Tender” and “Clover Over Dover”; the latter performance marked the live debut of the Parklife track. For “Tender,” the band was joined by London Community Gospel Choir and Rokia Traoré.

Singer-actress Lady Gaga took home her first Oscar in the Best Original Song category for "Shallow" -- the popular track from the hit film, A Star Is Born. The award went to Gaga and co-writers Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando. In her speech, she thanked her director and co-star Bradley Cooper, for "believing in us".
"Bradley, there's not a single person on the planet that could have sung this song with me but you," said Gaga, who got emotional after the win.
"Thank you for believing in us. And if you are at home and you're sitting on your couch, and you are watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work."
"I've worked hard for a long time, and a it's not about winning. But what it's about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There's a discipline for passion,...

Unlike the song category, it’s impossible to predict the winner from this year’s quintet of original-score nominees. It’s almost anyone’s game.
Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson spent a month in Africa recording unusual drums, flutes and vocals, then adding them to a massive London orchestra and choir to create a unique soundscape for the fictional land of Wakanda in “Black Panther” — the first Marvel movie to land a score nomination.
Terence Blanchard, like Göransson, is a first-time nominee for “BlacKkKlansman” — amazingly, as he has been Spike Lee’s house composer since 1991, doing acclaimed work on films like “Malcolm X” and “Inside Man.” He’s also the first African-American composer to be nominated in this category since Herbie Hancock won 32 years ago for “Round Midnight.”
Nicholas Britell, previously nominated for 2016’s “Moonlight,” reunited with director Barry Jenkins for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” from James Baldwin’s story of racial injustice.

On Sunday night, Ludwig Göransson won three Grammys. The trio of awards came in recognition of his Black Panther score, and his collaboration with Childish Gambino on “This Is America,” a song (and record) that set the world on fire. Along with Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Ariana Grande and others, Gambino (né Donald Glover) was not in attendance that night, reportedly due to friction with The Recording Academy. Standing in for the esteemed multi-hyphenate, the composer and record producer could only pay tribute to Glover and director Ryan Coogler, two of his closest collaborators, who created two of the year’s most groundbreaking works of art.
“I feel like I’m in a dream right now. It’s just so insane,” Göransson told Deadline yesterday. “For the last 10 years, I’ve been working with Donald Glover and Ryan Coogler, and we’ve put down so much time, really trying to make the best that we can,...

“What is it that Mumford & Sons do?” asks the band’s keyboard player Ben Lovett. “That’s what we are searching for. I really hope this record will continue to broaden the sense of what that means.”
On their third album, 2015’s Wilder Mind, Mumford & Sons traded banjo and acoustic strumming for alt-rock guitars and arena-sized choruses. Going electric divided their fan base (“Although we didn’t have people shouting ‘Judas,’” notes guitarist and banjo player Winston Marshall.) To celebrate Africa Express rolling out across the UK, here's a guide to 10 classic films to have come from the continent
Africa played no part in the invention of cinema. For decades, in Tarzan movies, it was the subject of fake Hollywood fantasies. And yet, when Africans made films about themselves, the results were astonishing. There are scores of great African movies. Here are 10 of the best:
Cairo Station (Egypt, 1958)
If Alfred Hitchcock had been Egyptian and bisexual, and had himself played Norman Bates, Psycho might have been something like this. Sweaty, musical, melodramatic and political, Cairo Station stars ballsy writer-director Youssef Chahine as a homicidal newspaper seller in Cairo's vast railway station. In the 1950s, movies such as Rebel without a Cause and All That Heaven Allows were about repression as a ticking time bomb, but Chahine's film about sexual desire with no outlet was one of the biggest cinematic bombs of the decade.

London -- There will be amazing performances and memorable scenes all over Britain this summer. And only some of them will involve medals.
Many of the world's top athletes will compete in the Olympics this summer, and there will be plenty of action away from the tracks, fields and arenas. Alongside the sporting contest is an entertainment extravaganza that will bring stars and celebrities from Paul McCartney to Brangelina to London during the Games.
Britain is organizing a banquet designed to demonstrate – as Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt put it – that "culture is to Britain what the sun is to Spain."
Culture is a $177 billion a year business in Britain, and music is one of the country's biggest exports, so it's no surprise that the Games will be accompanied by a melodic soundtrack of summer concerts.

Well, it took all day, but finally, on Tuesday night (February 9), organizers revealed the full lineup for the 2010 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, scheduled for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee.
Jay-z, Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder, Weezer and Flaming Lips top the bill for this year's 'Roo, a list of more than 90 acts spanning genres and eras.
There are genuine legends (Jimmy Cliff, John Fogerty), established rock acts (the Dead Weather), hip-hop talent (Wale, Nas, Kid Cudi), electro heavyweights (LCD Soundsystem, Thievery Corporation) and bands that hearken back to the festival's earlier, decidedly jammy routes (Medeski, Martin and Wood, the Disco Biscuits), not to mention the annual WTFs (Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, Darryl Hall with Chromeo). All in all, it's a rather jam-packed four days of music.

Beginning today, Paste editor-in-chief Josh Jackson will pick something new every day—like a song, a film, a beer or, in this case, a music video—that he thinks will make your life a little more enjoyable.
Filmmakers David Hensher and Johan Koelb have thrown the kitchen sink at the title track of Baaba Maal's first proper album in eight years, Television. The video looks like every lo-fi Spike Jonze/Michel Gondry effect jumbled into each other as the directors move in and out of TV screens and across the globe, while Maal sings "L'Homme dans la television." "Every one of us is the man in the television,” he tells Muso's Guide. "It is a wonderful instrument...if you use it to educate the next generation." And with Sabina Scuibba and the rest of the Brazilian Girls helping out, Maal's African electro-pop groove stays fresh for all seven minutes and 15 seconds.
