Exclusive Interview: Michelle Ye talks Vengeance, Dream Home, Unleashed and lots more

5 August 2009 9:49 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Born in China, raised in the Us and now an established name in Hong Kong, Michelle Ye is hardly your typical Chinese actress. After starring in a decade’s worth of hugely successful TV series, including comedies, romances and even martial arts serials, Michelle signed with Media Asia and dived headlong into Hong Kong’s film industry, and in just a couple of years has worked with some of the city’s finest directors and gone head to head with a string of Mainland and Taiwanese wannabes. On the eve of Vengeance’S Hong Kong premiere, Michelle very graciously let me buy her lunch and we discussed working with Johnnie To, Alan Mak and Pang Ho Cheung, being in-competition at Cannes and the general state of the local industry. Beware - here be Spoilers!

Review: Overheard

24 July 2009 8:49 AM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

One thing is made abundantly clear from Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s new film, Overheard – being a cop sucks. Sure you get to carry a gun but you work long hours in a high stress environment within an almost militaristic chain of command. Living your job and sacrificing relationships for a lousy salary in the hope of chasing down scumbags living the good life on dirty money can be demoralising for even the most optimistic of coppers and takes all the fun out of crime-fighting.

Overheard (Qie ting feng yun) is the latest thriller directed and written by Alan Mak and Felix Chong who some of you might remember from a pretty unknown Asian film called Infernal Affairs. The film tells the story of three investigators (played by Daniel Wu, Louis Koo and Lau Ching-Wan) who are trying to solve a financial crime but somehow get entangled in several intrigues themselves. Overheard will open in Hong Kong’s theaters on July 24th.

[See post to watch Flash video] Synopsis via 24fps:

Alan Mak and Felix Chong Are Overheard

14 June 2009 4:41 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

While attending the Hong Kong Filmart earlier this year I commented that it appeared star Louis Koo was poised to have a very good year, appearing in two very intriguing new films being heavily promoted at the time.  One was the Soi Cheang directed, Johnnie To produced Accident - rumored to be complete around September - while the other was OVerheard, the new cop thriller from writer-director duo Alan Mak and Felix Chong, who have had their hands in a good number of Hong Kong’s best cop thrillers of recent years.  Here’s the synopsis for this one:

A major stock exchange in the world, Hong Kong attracts not only money but any who try to manipulate the market. At the Hong Kong Police Force Commercial Crime Bureau, an operation is underway to infiltrate a trading company, Feng Hua International where a man, nicknamed “Boss” is the chief suspect. »

Trailer time for Hong Kong thriller Overheard

14 June 2009 4:04 AM, PDT | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

Granted stock exchange fraud sounds more like a good reason for a snooze than the premise for a taut thriller, but it looks like directing duo Felix Chong and Siu Fai Mak’s (‘Confession of Pain,’ ‘Infernal Affairs 2’) still know how to pack in the tension, with the first trailer for their latest thriller Overheard. Chock full of top list talent including: Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu there’s plenty of reasons to put off that nap. Overheard opens in Hong Kong next month. »

Gruesome poster for Hk thriller Overheard

14 February 2009 8:38 AM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

When we first clapped eyes on this bloody in your face poster for upcoming Hong Kong movie Overheard we thought we were in for a horror pic, but no, it’s actually the one sheet for upcoming thriller directed by “Lady Cop & Papa Crook” duo Felix Chong and Alan Mak. The flick has an equally impressive main cast including Lau Ching-wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu. Produced by Derek Yee (Protégé, One Nite In Mongkok), Overheard is about three Cops who become increasingly concerned by the secrets they hear whilst conducting surveillance on a listed company, without knowing this is a path of no return. This one we’ll be keeping a close eye on. It's too early for a trailer, but Chinese site Mtime does have a few stills to see, here. »
