About a year ago, comic book author James Tynion IV was on a long drive back to New York City from a friend’s engagement upstate when he got an email from French artist Elsa Charretier asking him if he’d be interested in writing the script for a short film she and longtime partner Pierrick Colinet were making.
The reaction from Tynion, the best-selling creator who has several comics on the go such as Something Is Killing the Children and Department of Truth as well as a Substack comic newsletter, was an almost immediate no. “I’m working on a million things, I don’t have time for this,” Tynion thought.
“By the time I got back to the city, I got an idea in my head, and I was like, ‘Yes, I want to do this,’” Tynion recalled in a Zoom conversation with The Hollywood Reporter.

Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films And Amazon Studios Land Rights To Novella ‘DNA’; Julian Meiojas To Adapt
Exclusive: Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films and Amazon Studios have partnered to develop the illustrated novella DNA (“Death Notification Agency”) following a competitive situation for the film rights. Genre’s Kinberg and Audrey Chon will produce alongside Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Jay Schuminsky, who published the original illustrated novella via their company NeoText.
Julian Meiojas will adapt the script based on the series of novellas he created. An established TV writer, this will be Meiojas’ first foray into film.
DNA is a genre-bending thrill ride set in a world where people are informed of their death 24 hours in advance by an organization known as the Death Notification Agency. We follow an ex-detective process server who, after being informed of his own death, goes on the run across a dystopian United States to uncover a larger conspiracy.

The idea of a horror host is almost as old as the horror genre itself, dating all the way back to radio serials where an in-character narrator would ensure that the audience stuck around between stories; television viewers are similarly familiar with the notion, with names like Elvira, Mistress of the Night and Svengoolie transcending the B-movies they introduced on a weekly basis. It’s in comic books, however, that the horror host has truly blossomed, with characters like The Crypt Keeper, Uncle Creepy, and DC’s Cain and Abel becoming as famous — if not more so — than the stories they foisted upon the unsuspecting reader.
Amongst the scores of comic hosts, one holds an especially dear place in the heart of a generation of British readers: Misty, the cover star and fictional editor of the short-lived horror weekly of the same name, which ran from 1978 through 1980. The only constant...

Exclusive: AMC has optioned the rights to Sorcerers, a novella by co-writers Maurice Broaddus and Otis Whitaker and featuring illustrations by internationally renowned artist Jim Mahfood, with plans to adapt it into a series.
The short story is a psychedelic urban fantasy about a 30-year-old man from Harlem who comes into his own as a hip hop-inspired sorcerer. It follows Malik Hutchins, the black sheep to one of the most successful families in Harlem. Malik couch-surfs with relatives, parties with his girlfriend, and ghostwrites rhymes for local rappers for a few bucks to finance his lifestyle—but when cocky Malik sells two warring rappers the same verse, he paints a target on his own back. Then on his deathbed, Malik’s beloved grandfather Pop-Pop reveals that Malik is a sorcerer, in the great tradition of African sorcery born on the plains of the rift valley before the beginning of time.

In the mid to late '60s, Warren Publishing added a significant strand to the presentation of comics via the publication of titles such as Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, which duplicated the general approach of the EC-style horror and science fiction comic anthologies of the '50s, but with a magazine format aimed at adults that cleverly skirted the comics code and thus allowed for unprecedented creative freedom within the field of American comics. By the early '70s, in parallel to the evolution of the Hollywood New Wave Movement Warren's approach had grown similarly multilayered and internationally inspired, showcasing comics and painted pieces by American auteur pulp masters like Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Alex Toth and Richard Corben alongside work by emerging auteur European artists like Esteban Maroto, Jose Gonzalez and Jose Ortiz.

Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks is a difficult book to review because it has a certain of style and humor that will work for its target audience. The question becomes how big is that audience, and more importantly does accomplishing what you set out to do make your work a success? My argument would be in general no. Look at Adam Sandler films for instance. No doubt they are the movies he wanted to make, but that does not mean that nearly everything he has done in the last decade has its tremendous amount of faults. Looking at Grrl Scouts: Magic Socks #2 there are a lot of issues that stop it from being a successful book.
First and foremost that sense of humor is full of jokes that are random for random sake. When the first issue...

Alien Day has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean we still can’t enjoy the fruits of other people's labor that made that day so special. There was a shit-ton of Aliens-inspired fan art posted online recently. A lot of the art I’ve come across is from an upcoming art book called Alien Visions by Udon, and here are the artists that provided the art you see below.
The artists whose work you see here include Shane Hillman, Derek Kaufman, Carlos D’ Gonzalo Ordonez Arias, Jaffrey Chamba, Edwin Haung, Long Vo, Tom Whalan, O_8, Livio Ramondelli, Bruce Yan, Ken Christiansen, Jim Mahfood, Whilce Portico, Ray Fawkes, Dan Hipp, John Giang, Seas Dove, Katie Cook, and Pikomaro.

Howard the Human #1

Some arbitrary sci-fi geek stuff happened in the Marvel universe recently thanks to the Secret Wars event comic, resulting in really weird continuity that is going to last for the few months this event will need tie-ins to hit comic shops with. For nerds who want more pieces of the large, sprawling story, there are certainly tie-ins to fit their desires, but there are also straight up goofy releases that certainly don’t need Secret Wars to exist. Yes, tie-ins like Howard the Human aren’t even remotely anchored to the main Secret Wars storyline, simply using the messed-up-continuity angle to deliver a wacky What If? story.
In the case of Howard the Human #1, a very stylish, cool and funny What If? story.

Not sure if this is an easy review to write, because it is essentially more of the same as last issue, or a hard review to write as I need to try and find original things to say! All the artists (all with previous Tank Girl credentials) are back from last issue, along with the main draw of original creators Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlett and, as you would expect, you get exactly what it says on the tin.
Firstly, I have to confess to loving that cover by Brett Parson. Cheeky, sexy, risqué of course, but also showing great composition and a master class in designing an eye catching cover. A bit like the main character herself, it is possibly a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ cover as well.

Tank Girl to me is a character very evocative of a certain time in history, the late 1980′s/ early 1990′s, when she became something of a counter-culture icon. she seemed to arrive at the perfect time, when British students were rebelling against the previous decade of conservatism in all things. I remember, as a student then, Tank Girl T-shirts and posters pretty much everywhere. Her ‘death’ as a cultural icon probably came about with the 1995 movie Tank Girl, which (whisper it quietly) wasn’t really very good. But I digress….
21st Century Tank Girl sees Titan bring us new adventures of Tank Girl, having published all things Tank Girl for many years.

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World Comic Con May 22nd through the 24th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, Mo 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!
Sure, you got the comic artists and cosplayers, wrestlers, a St. Louis Ram, a Power Ranger, and of course the ubiquitous Walking Dead stars, but what We Are Movie Geeks is most excited about are the celebrities from movies that will be on hand: Horror legend George Romero, Sharknado legend Tara Reid, horror hostess with the mostest (if you know what I mean) Elvira, Guardians Of The Galaxy tough guy Dave Bautista, Henry the serial killer himself Michael Rooker, Do The Right Thing’s ‘Buggin Out’ Giancarlo Esposito. Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s Pippin Billy Boyd, Captain America squeeze Hayley Atwell, and Silent Bob’s buddy Jay aka Jason Mewes.

I’m very excited about the recent growth of comic book creators in the Midwest and in the Saint Louis region in particular. Creators Jim Mahfood, Cullen Bunn and Matt Kindt have established themselves in the industry and have gained quite a following but still show up at local events every year and their diversity will hopefully show that anyone can make comics. And hopefully, next year, we’ll have two comic book conventions where aspiring creators can talk to and learn from both national and local creators. Personally, I think it’s a great time to be into comics, especially with the world of digital distribution making it easier to get your work out there independently.

After a lengthy hiatus, the Tivoli Theater’s Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series is back!
Things kick off this weekend (May 3rd and 4th) with the 1995 sci-fi comedy Tank Girl based on the late-80’s British comic book originally created by Alan Martin and Jamie Hewlitt.
This weekend’s Midnight show is sponsored by Star Clipper Comics and they are bringing St. Louis native and comic book artist Jim Mahfood to the Tivoli to speak. Jim is the creator of the comic book series Grrl Scouts as well as his strip Stupid Comics and is an illustrator on the current Tank Girl Comic Book.
Tank Girl is the story of a futuristic feminist superhero and her fight to preserve the environment against an evil government bureaucracy. The action is set in the year 2033, after an ecological disaster of drought and pollution has ravaged the countryside, and water is scarce.

A key point in the new documentary, Marley (opening appropriately on 4/20 and also available Video On Demand), happens when the director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland) visits Bob Marley’s white relatives. He let both his second cousin Peter and his half-sister Constance listen to the song, “Cornerstone” separately. The story behind the song is that Marley wrote it after trying to go to his father’s side of the family, who owned a construction company in Jamaica, for money to buy a car so that he could distribute his records and was turned away. This lyric was isolated:
“The stone that the builder refused will always be the head cornerstone.”
With that context, Peter had a newfound understanding of a song he had heard countless times. For Constance it was very different experience because she too came from a mixed descent and understood his struggles growing up.

If you think the title says it all, it doesn’t. If you think you already know what Marijuanaman is all about, you’re wrong. BuzzFocus.com spoke with the creators, Reggae star musician Ziggy Marley, Joe Casey (Butcher Baker, GØDLAND) and Jim Mahfood (Kick Drum Comix, Mix Tape) at Wondercon about their upcoming Image Comics original graphic novel dropping on 4/20. They talk about what they set out to do, how the three of them collaborated and more.
I think a lot of people are wondering how this collaboration came together and how the project materialized.
Ziggy Marley: I first met Jim. Then I checked out Jim’s art–loved Jim’s art and thought it was cool and appropriate for the comic because it was something different, not typical. Jim told me about Joe and I said, ‘alright I didn’t know who he was’ [Laughs] but I read comics,...

The comics world welcomes Ziggy Marley and his new Image Comics original graphic novel, Marijuanaman. The five-time Grammy winner and Reggae star is collaborating with notable underground illustrator and Live Artist Jim Mahfood and longtime comic scribe Joe Casey. Marley came up with the concept of the character who is an alien who has landed on Earth to “deliver an important message and at the same time save his own planet.”
Mahfood said in a press release earlier this month, “It’s been a really unique and thrilling project for me to work on. Ziggy Marley is a visionary and Marijuanaman is his, so he’s involved in every step, but he’s also been cool enough to let Joe and I cut loose and really spread our artistic wings on this project. Through our collaboration, we are creating something that has a unique flavor and feeling. Marijuanaman is not...

The comic is based on a character entirely of Ziggy’s creation. The official press release, courtesy of Cbr, says that Marijuanaman will “shatter all expectations,” and that “this is not the comic you think it is!”
Well, with a name like Marijuanaman, what exactly is it about then?
More from the press release: “The oversized deluxe hardcover graphic novel tells the tale of a noble extraterrestrial champion, who has arrived on Earth to deliver an important message and at the same time save his own planet... Marijuanaman represents the hope of the future… the hope that we will utilize all of the power that the universe has given us to save our planet,” Marley explained.

The IFC News team bumped into rock star Ziggy Marley on the convention floor at Comic-Con 2010, and got the scoop on his new super-hero book "Marijuanaman." The book's publisher, Image Comics, describes its protagonist as a being "from a planet that is in desperate need of Thc. Marijuanaman seeks to save Earth's marijuana fields from destruction by the drug company PharmeXon, and thus saving his home planet from destruction." Dude, Cheech & Chong must me kicking themselves for never thinking of this.
Marley told us about the book while flanked by his collaborators on the series, writer Joe Casey ("Godland") and Jim Mahfood ("Grrl Scouts"). Their respective track records is enough to pique our interest though if I were them I'd have gone with a different, Coen Brothers-inspired title for the series: "Burn After Reading."
On a related topic, if you type the words "Ziggy Marley" and "marijuana" into Google you...

Movie Spoilers Alert!
So you want more of Jennifer’S Body after seeing the movie... wait... you haven’t seen it yet? Come on! Don’t let the trailer drag you down to rental status. Take a chance on it. So go grab a buddy, head to a matinee, order a Coke and a bucket O’popcorn, and have fun for about an hour and 40 minutes. Meet back here with a high five. For those that already have seen it, proceed with said high five and walk this way.
The movie gave us a world of high school and horror. Jennifer’S Body is a great model for how puberty, teen angst, and undefined insecurities can be construed as “pure evil” or “like hell...only with pom-poms.” And the movie delivered entertainment in the form of a sharp-tongued, dark-as-hell comedy with a big splash of blood, guts, sex, and demonic possession.

One of the cooler movies I saw this year at Sundance was director Nicholas Jasenovec's "Paper Heart," a sort of fiction/documentary hybrid that follows comedienne Charlyne Yi and her search for the meaning of love. Interspersed between on-camera interviews with real people are dramatized scenes of Yi's real-life relationship with actor Michael Cera. It's all very clever and meta, and you'll get to see it for yourself when the movie hits theaters on August 7.
Now I'm here to tell you lucky San Diego Comic-Con attendees that Yi will be appearing alongside Jasenovec and Jake Johnson (who plays Jasenovec in the movie) for a July 26 panel. Fans will be able to catch the trio talking about the movie and answering questions in Ballroom 20 at the San Diego Convention Center between 12:30pm and 1pm. The luckiest among you may even score a "Paper Heart" button, which you can see...
