The 1990s represented a golden epoch for action cinema. This was the time which saw VHS and its digitized successor DVD introduce a whole new generation of fans to the magic of stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And those titans from the ‘80s still claimed big wins, too, at the box office and home media via the likes of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Demolition Man, and Cliffhanger.
It was also the decade that saw audiences turn out in droves to theaters and rental stores to catch a glimpse of Steven Seagal’s flying fists in movies like Under Siege or Jean-Claude Van Damme and his trademark splits in Timecop; Jackie Chan finally got the larger American fanbase he so richly deserved thanks to the Rush Hour movies while Bruce Willis gave us Die Hard With A Vengeance, the best of all the Die Hard sequels, before pivoting...

Watching Nolly will divide a generation: you’ll either be surprised you haven’t heard of her (even if she was ‘a bit before your time’), or even more surprised you’d somehow forgotten she ever existed.
She certainly seems instantly unforgettable, thanks in part to Helena Bonham Carter’s assured depiction of her full-throttle, take-life-by-the-horns character (infamous red dye job included), but also thanks to Nolly writer Russell T Davies’ very obvious affection for the real Noele Gordon.
Davies respectfully litters the series with references to her many underappreciated achievements in the television industry. If you do know Noele Gordon, you’ll most likely know her as a daytime TV stalwart who propped up the naff-but-beloved British soap Crossroads (even if she couldn’t prop up the show’s infamous wobbly scenery) as motel owner Meg for the best part of two decades.

As the credits rolled on another episode of Crossroads on 4 November 1981, the switchboards at ITV started to jam. After watching the show’s beloved Midlands motel go up in flames, hundreds of viewers picked up the phone in tears to ask one question: would Meg Mortimer, the onscreen alter ego of actress Noele “Nolly” Gordon, make it out of the blaze alive? The odds for Meg, last seen clutching some sleeping pills, didn’t look good. The Sun claimed in a front-page splash the next day that some fans had even phoned up hospitals to ask about the injuries she might have sustained in the fire.
It was the culmination of nearly five months of outrage and hysteria that had begun in June, when news first broke that Gordon’s much-loved character would be written out of the soap. This was not a mutually agreed parting of ways – it was against Gordon’s own wishes.

Everyone knows Russell T Davies is a great writer. Far fewer know he’s a great talker. By the time I meet Davies at a Soho hotel to discuss his latest TV drama, Nolly, a tremendously entertaining three-parter about Crossroads star Noele Gordon, the 59-year-old Welshman has been gabbing all day. He still has plenty of words for the conservative government, however, and their recently abandoned plan to privatise Channel 4. “We were all played by the right wing for a year defending Channel 4 and then they dropped it,” he booms, sounding both furious and friendly. “We were just like yo-yos.”
It’s fair to say that Davies has a vested interest in the subject. He worked with the not-for-profit channel on Queer As Folk, his seminal 1990s gay drama that was rebooted in the US for a second time last year, and It’s a Sin, his gut-wrenching series about...

Stars Robson Green and Tom Brittney, who revealed the news on an Instagram live video, will return.
This comes as the fifth season finale of the Kudos-produced drama is set to air in the U.S. this Sunday.
Brittney and Green revealed that the show is set to start shooting in September and could become one of the first big British scripted series to return.
The show, set in the quaint but crime-ridden village of Grantchester, England, follows the investigations of an unlikely pairing: a detective (Green) and a vicar (Brittney).
Season 5 picked up in Cambridge in 1957, a year after the current fourth season in which Prime Minister Harold MacMillan told the British people that they had “never had it so good.”
Green said that he was “so happy” that the show was returning.

Following the success of The Crown and its very own A Very English Scandal, it’s unsurprising that the BBC has chosen to adapt another important chapter of British history.
The Trial of Christine Keeler revisits the Profumo Scandal of 1961; an event which saw the then Minister for War John Profumo embroiled in an extramarital affair with the eponymous Keeler.
The scandal was seen as a watershed moment for politics and went on to contribute to the downfall of Harold MacMillan’s Conservative government.
As producer Rebecca Ferguson notes, the scandal showed that “men in established positions were suddenly human beings, fallible and prone to bad behaviour.”
However, a key part of the new six-part drama is a change of emphasis. Whereas previous versions of the story have concentrated on Profumo, or the political machinations, this story grounds itself much more in the human impact of the events.

“The Crown” finally returns after a very long hiatus on Sunday with the premiere of its third season. And because it’s been almost two years since Season 2 of the royal drama dropped on Netflix, we’re sure even the most diehard fans have forgotten what happened on the most recent episode.
But don’t worry, TheWrap has compiled a refresher to get you all caught up with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and their regal brood before the new episodes launch.
(Here’s your reminder that the second season marked the final performances of Claire Foy as Elizabeth, Matt Smith as Philip, Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, and all of the rest of the Seasons 1 and 2 cast who were replaced for the time jump that hits the series for Seasons 3 and 4. Now you’ll have Olivia Colman as your queen, Tobias Menzies as her prince and Helena Bonham Carter as her sister.

James Norton and Sophie Cookson have lifted the lid on their roles in BBC drama The Trial of Christine Keeler – saying that it turns up the volume on Keeler’s role in the Profumo scandal in light off the #metoo movement.
The stars were joined on a Deadline-moderated panel at Mipcom by writer Amanda Coe and The Crown’s Ben Miles to discuss the six-part series, which is being sold by Keshet International.
Kingsman: The Secret Service star Cookson plays Keeler, the 19-year old woman who was involved in a relationship with John Profumo, while Norton stars as Stephen Ward, the society osteopath who drew her into the in-crowd.
Norton told Deadline, “It’s imperative that we go bac and look at these moments in history in light of the recalibration with the Times Up and Me Too movements. It’s also far more interesting – what a better way to...

The Crown season 3 has yet to arrive on Netflix, but we now know one major new cast member who’ll be joining the hit royal drama for its fourth season. Gillian Anderson has signed on to play British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, most famously portrayed by Meryl Streep in 2011’s The Iron Lady, for which she won the Oscar for Best Actress.
As The Crown aims to tell the entire story of Queen Elizabeth II’s time on the throne, season 3 is set to move forward to the monarch’s middle years. As such, Claire Foy has left the series and has been replaced by Olivia Colman in the lead. Matt Smith and Vanessa Kirby are also out, with Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter taking over as Prince Phillip and Princess Margaret, respectively.

Long live the Queen.
The Crown, arguably the jewel of Netflix’s original series, is gearing up to shoot its third and fourth seasons back-to-back, and the online streamer has today rolled out the red carpet for its ensemble cast.
Chief among them is newcomer Jason Watkins, who has clinched the role of former British Prime Minister, Harold Wilson. He’s the latest cabinet member to feature on The Crown, given previous installments of the popular period drama have carved out room for Winston Churchill (John Lithgow), Clement Attlee (Simon Chandler), Anthony Eden (Jeremy Northam) and Harold Macmillan (Anton Lesser).
We also have confirmation that former Harry Potter actress Helena Bonham Carter is now officially on board to play Princess Margaret, a role previously occupied by Vanessa Kirby. Here’s what Carter had to say about her casting:

The second season of The Crown premiered December 8 on Netflix. In it, Margaret married Antony Armstrong-Jones, the Earl of Snowdon (Matthew Goode) and the season ended with her pregnant with one of their children.

Keshet International, the global sales arm of the Israeli producer and broadcaster, is to shop BBC One drama The Trial of Christine Keeler around the world after striking a deal with Fleming producer Ecosse Films.
The deal is the largest third party pick-up for the firm that originated Homeland and comes as it steps up its focus on external productions. It marks the first investment since the launch of its Keshet International Fund, which it announced in March during the In-tv conference in Jerusalem.
The six-part drama, which is expected to air in 2019, takes a look at the infamous Profumo Affair, which involved 19-year old Christine Keeler, who was involved in a relationship with John Profumo, the Secretary of State for War in Harold Macmillan’s Conservative government. Netflix struck gold once again last year with their royal drama The Crown. As well as its excellent production values and smart writing from creator Peter Morgan, what really brought the series to life were the central performances from Claire Foy and Matt Smith as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, respectively. However, it was made clear that these actors would be replaced within a couple of seasons as the show moved through the Queen’s life.
Now, it’s been revealed that Olivia Colman will take over for Foy, with the actress set to star as the Queen for seasons 3 and 4 of the series. This fits with what’s been said about The Crown before. That being that seasons 1 and 2 will cover everything from Elizabeth’s ascension to the throne in the 1950s to the resignation of Prime Minister Harold MacMillan in 1963.

Less than a year after “Downton Abbey” wrapped its final season, as Americans were mourning the loss of its favorite intelligent British aristocracy drama, came “The Crown,” Peter Morgan’s gripping series about the early days of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. With standout performances, deft direction, and writing that made dry historical material leap off the screen, “The Crown” quickly proved one of Netflix’s most critically-acclaimed original series, racking up nine Emmy nominations, including one each for writing and directing.
Many have speculated how far in time “The Crown” might jump, having the whole monarchy to cover. As the first trailer for the second season shows, the characters are still relatively young as the series picks up ten years into Elizabeth’s reign.

Opportunities are opening up to restore classic assets on new formats - but film restoration is an art form in danger. Ann-Marie Corvin reports from Screen International and Broadcast’s Restoration & Archive Forum

While there have been a few showcase renewals in the Us, such as Sony’s 4K restoration of David Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence Of Arabia, the main drivers for restoration of archive in Europe are commercial - the Blu-ray sell-through market and broadcasters looking to release TV classics on new distribution formats - or cultural, from national institutions and trusts that find the money to achieve a handful of significant projects.

Introducing our look at the year that defined the modern era, the veteran writer recalls the extraordinary collision of politics, culture and social upheaval that he witnessed as a student
Was it a prefigurative year? I think so. Not that one thought of it as such at the time or even a few years later, when it was totally forgotten in the turbulence that engulfed the world. I am trying to recall that year, to find deep down some memories, even a few impressions on the basis of which I could reconstruct a misted-up past without too many distortions.
When I arrived to study at Oxford in October 1963, the bohemian style was black plastic or leather jackets for women and black leather or navy donkey jackets for men. I stuck to cavalry twills and a duffle coat, at least for a few months. The Cuban missile crisis had temporarily boosted...

Despite film hits such as Billy Elliot and The Reader, theatre is 'home' to Stephen Daldry and now he's back in the West End, directing a regal Helen Mirren. Here he talks about communal living, depicting Hm on stage – and those Olympic ceremonies

Daldry, the director, and Morgan, the writer, have been stuck in here for weeks working on a new play called The Audience, which opens at the Gielgud on Friday. The premise is enticing: since the second world war, the British sovereign has met...
