- Producer
- Visual Effects
- Composer
With 20++ years of experience in film production, Don MacBain has been keenly involved in developing and producing special format and 3D filmmaking. He has worked on high profile projects for a wide range of companies and clients, including Sony Pictures, DreamWorks, and Universal Studios, as well as independent production houses (Rhythm & Hues) and themed attraction developers (Jack Rouse & Assoc.). Don also consulted and produced media for both "Ferrari" Themeparks (Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. - 2010, and Ferrari Land - Port Aventura, Spain - 2017).
In 2015 he produced/oversaw 122 pieces of media for the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum. In 2016 he was the forerunner of the team effort in shooting the media for a high end themepark flying theater entirely with heavy-lifting drones. Heavy lifting, so as to use high resolution, high frame-rate (and single lens - no stitching) cameras. It was the first world class themed flying theater that filmed entirely with drones. This for "Around the World with Ferrari" for Ferrari Land (mentioned above). A link to the InPark Magazine article about this can be found on Don's website.
In 2013 he co-produced "African Safari 3D", an nWave Pictures/Studio Canal feature release. On the CGI side of things, he produced the animated showpiece for Wells Fargo Corporate, a 90 second "living painting" re-creating their iconic Stagecoach team (for which he also wrote the music). On the prior Ferrari World Abu Dhabi pieces, he was digital media and post Producer for "Flying Over Italy" (a Dome experience) and "Driving with the Champion". He did the preliminary budget and development analysis on "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D," a Walden Media/NewLine Entertainment release. He produced an early 3D installation "Ahead of Time" at LG Headquarters in Seoul & Busan, South Korea. He also worked on the effects in "Wings of Courage" in IMAX 3D for Sony Pictures Classics.
Don served as Producer on "Shrek 3D" (PDI/DreamWorks), which served as the basis for the Shrek 4D attraction at Universal Studios, and was Production Supervisor for the Miniature Unit on "Starship Troopers" (Sony) which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
Don began his career in special venue media with three Showscan attraction films featured at Huis Ten Bosch, a Dutch-themed park in Nagasaki, Japan. That let to four ride films for D3Boss, a self-contained two-seated gyro-sphere attraction. In 1989 he joined the visual effects industry working at Lucas film Commercials, and subsequently became Production Manager and Producer at Boss Films and then Sony Pictures Imageworks. Don went on to hone his feature animation and VFX skills at PDI/DreamWorks. A complete history as well as portfolio can be found on his website - donmacbain (dot) com
Don is a member of the Visual Effects Society and the Producers Guild of America. He is also an accomplished composer and musician, having produced an album ("Mac and Mac Music", available on iTunes) and also having created the score for the feature film "Full Clip".
