Weekly Body Count: Trap Them and Eat Them

20 May 2009 9:02 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

One of the many disadvantages of living in a place like New Hamsphire is that you have to live on the edge vicariously through the lives of people who live closer to the action through correspondence so it was a while before I got into the depths of crazy horror movies. Though I'd been watching horror for years, we never had the convenience of one of those video stores that bought one of everything from their distributors and the horror sections around these parts were woefully understocked. If you wanted to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street 6, you could find it just about anywhere but if you wanted to go out on a limb and see something wildly exotic, you were screwed. Getting your hands on stuff bearing names like Lenzi, D'Amato and Deodato you had to drive into Boston and pay premium prices on factory pre-records and overpriced bootlegs. »

Laid To Rest (DVD Review)

20 April 2009 7:47 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“I ultimately wanted to make a movie with my wife and my friends. I know it’s a ‘guy in a mask chasing a girl’ movie, but I wanted to see how good we could make that with nothing. Is it high-concept? Not really. But I hope it’s entertaining, and what I also hope is that people have a tolerance for story and character.”

Writer/director Robert Hall made those comments about Laid To Rest (out on DVD this week from Anchor Bay) in Fangoria #282, which features ChromeSkull, the film’s “guy in a mask,” on the cover. And while yes, Rest is entertaining, and yes, it does have likable characters, its story weaknesses ultimately weigh it down.

The film starts off interestingly enough, with a Girl (whose name is never given and is played by Bobbi Sue Luther, Hall’s wife) waking up in a coffin in a morgue, »

Laid to Rest (2009) Movie Review

10 April 2009 9:09 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

“Laid to Rest” is the second outing from noted special effects and makeup talent Robert Hall, which sees him step away from the grounded drama of his debut “Lightning Bug” and into full-on horror. The film is an old school piece of slasher mayhem, with a straightforward genre plot providing an excuse for exhilarating scenes of bloody carnage and inventive murder scenes that hark back to the glory days of the 1980s. For such a back to basics hack and slash effort the film has an impressive cast of recognisable faces, including Lena Headey (who worked with Hall on the television series “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”), Thomas Dekker (“Heroes”) and Johnathon Schaech (also in the awful “Prom Night” remake”), not to mention veteran character actor Richard Lynch (who recently turned up in Rob Zombie’s “Halloween”). The film also features music from the likes of Suicidal Tendencies, Deathbox and Blackcowboy, »

Before the Oscars, They Belonged to Us, Part 2

25 February 2009 2:52 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Disclaimer: This article may contain sarcasm; irony and “LOLs” proceed with caution.

Our second stab at the Oscars contains make-up effects and score (read part 1 here). The make-up effects, followed by the visual effects and technical awards, remain my favorite parts of the show; here you got to see your heroes: Rick Baker, Howard Berger, Chris Walas or Rob Bottin in the audience. Even the great Stan Winston could have been out there, back in the day. Though best known for his “visual effects” wins—he brought home an Oscar for best make-up in 1991 for Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Here genre fans can rejoice, Greg Cannom brought home the gold, again, for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Cannom, a genre elder, worked alongside (just to name a few) Fincher, Coppola, Landis, Dante, Blatty, and Cohen creating all sorts of character and creature make-ups.

Chrome Angels trailer

19 January 2009 2:50 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

To preface the following clip, I should confess a few things: I love low-budget (but well-made) schlock, Westworld is one of my all-time favorite flicks, and I have an ongoing infatuation with Stacey Dash. Having said that, here's a trailer for Bullet Films' upcoming B-movie blast Chrome Angels, a "rednecks versus rogue robots" flick featuring genre guys Richard Lynch (Bad Dreams) and Paul Le Mat (Puppet Master), and lots of gunplay, exploding automatons and sexy ladies. (And if you're wondering "Why Stacey Dash?" Scroll down.) »
