Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

Lily Collins, Charlie McDowell and Alex Orlovsky have partnered to launch Case Study Films, a production company that will look to tell compelling and outside-of-the-box stories through a commercial eye in both film and television.
Case Study will develop material internally and with outside filmmakers and talent, discovering, supporting and giving voice to the next generation of storytellers from all walks of life, as it generates projects for its principals.
The production banner has film financing capabilities through a strategic partnership with High Frequency Entertainment, which will afford it flexibility in deciding whether to produce and finance a project entirely in-house, or to find appropriate streamer or studio partners for it, depending on its scale.
Among the projects in development at Case Study is the Hulu limited series Razzlekhan: The Infamous Crocodile of Wall Street, co-produced by Scoop Wasserstein from New York magazine, which has Collins set to star, with McDowell directing.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Dare Me” Episode 5, “Parallel Trenches.”]
The opening of each episode of “Dare Me” is its own pearl, presenting the audience with a mystifying piece of visual information that hints at where things might be heading. In the case of Episode 5, that image is a floating tooth, drifting — as some of the series central characters are, too. Unsettling in isolation and horrific in context, it’s just one of the many storytelling levels that this USA series has discovered for itself.
“I think we felt freer to be more abstract and surreal as it goes,” series co-creator and novel author Megan Abbott told IndieWire. “This show has gone somewhat into this sort of unconscious state, with dreams and the different POVs. It gives you a little more freedom to play. We’re all David Lynch fans among the room and the crew and everybody, so we would often talk about our David Lynch moment.

Exclusive: Fox Entertainment has acquired the rights to The Spellman Files book series by Lisa Lutz, which revolves about a family of PIs, to develop as a drama series.
Forging a path as an independent broadcast network with no affiliated studio, Fox has been focusing on access to talent and source material.
During the Fox TCA executive session today, Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier laid out the network’s core strategy for building a programming slate as an independent via deals “ranging from direct talent partnerships to direct IP acquisition.”
The former include talent pacts, and Fox Entertainment today announced its first direct (broadcast-only) overall deal with Criminal Minds and Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis.
The network also has been very active buying its own IP. One of its first major moves in that area is the acquisition of the Spellman novels, with the network also bidding on other book properties.

Updated with Vice statement: More than 75 current and former writers for HBO have signed a petition calling on Vice Media “to sign a strong union contract” with the WGA. The list includes several high-profile scribes including John Oliver, David Simon, Warren Leight, Tom Fontana, Eric Overmyer and Jesse Armstrong.
Read the petition and its signatories below.
Editorial staffers at Vice overwhelmingly ratified their first contract with WGA East in April 2016, a three-year deal that was retroactive to January 1 that year.
“This petition shows what WGA East solidarity looks like,” the guild said in a statement. “Just as our members who craft shows for HBO are expressing support for their brothers and sisters at Vice, the Wgae-represented employees in all parts of Vice are supporting each other in the quest for a good contract. That solidarity has already brought real gains in a number...

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

Let's get this out of the way: What we have just witnessed was, hands down, the best episode of The Deuce yet. By a lot. Titled "Au Reservoir," it's funny, scary, sad, sexy and entertaining as hell from start to finish. How did this so-so show get so damned good so suddenly?
The answers may lie behind the scenes. This episode was directed by co-star James Franco, who previously helmed one of the series' better installments. Judging from his two turns in the driver's seat, he's got a knack for...

Barry Sonnenfeld is back back back, people, with the news that he’s signed on to direct spy comedy-thriller, The Spellman Files, for Paramount Pictures. The movie, based on a book by Lisa Lutz, revolves around a female private eye who struggles to balance her love life with her job.Doesn’t exactly sound like scintillating material, but we’re always glad to see Sonnenfeld back behind the camera. Few directors have fallen from grace quite as dramatically as the impish Sonnenfeld, whose films are almost always shot through with a dark sense of humour and a signature visual style and are, for the most part, around ninety minutes long.Since the disappointing Men In Black II in 2002, Sonnenfeld has barely been able to get arrested, directing only the execrable Rv for the big screen. However, since he switched agencies recently, he’s become attached to a number of projects,...

The mother does background checks on her daughter's boyfriends; the father plants listening devices around the house; and the little sister secretly takes compromising pictures in order to blackmail them all.
